Cambridge University Press Introduction to Data Science for Social and Policy Research Collecting and Organizing Data with R and Python
Book SynopsisReal-world data sets are messy and complicated. This book shows students in social science and public management how to prepare these data sets for analysis, with detailed, step-by-step instructions. R and Python code is introduced gradually, providing readers with the tools they need to work with real data.Trade Review'Data science has now firmly moved from computer science and engineering to the disciplines of the social sciences, where scholars are harnessing the insightful power of ever larger and more complex data sets. This volume provides a clear introduction for social scientists and policy researchers into the use of R and Python, including best practice of working with data files, command files, and outputs. The step by step approach with real world examples will be of great value to students, scholars, and practitioners engaged in data analytic approaches to social problems.' Todd Landman, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Nottingham'The irruption of big data and the need to comply with high standards of research reproducibility require social scientists and policy analysts to be conversant in data collection and management techniques. Unfortunately, even those with sophisticated methodological training often lack the necessary tools to take on these requirements. Magallanes's book at long last collects and organizes a large amount of information and useful advice on how to curate data for scientific analysis. Through agile narrative and compelling examples, he walks the reader through the use of open-source tools of data science such as R, Python, and Github. The book is an invaluable resource for students and scholars at different levels of proficiency, from neophytes to advanced users.' Guillermo Rosas, Washington University, St. Louis'This new, practical, reader-friendly, how-to manual on computational social data analysis is both long overdue and a must-have for analysts ad researchers. The range of problem-solving strategies and demonstrations is impressive. While eminently practical, Magallanes' contribution is also rigorous and true to its scientific aims, which will please both basic and applied scientists and practitioners.' Claudio Cioffi-Revilla, Director, Center for Social Complexity, George Mason University, Washington DC, and founding President, Computational Social Science Society of the Americas'Magallanes' excellent book on data science for researchers and policy analysts is an accessible yet thorough introduction to data management and analyses in R and Python. It has a broad coverage of the techniques required to capture, clean, and process complex information. It is the perfect companion for sophisticated policy analysts and researchers that are ready to take advantage of the wealth of data that is available to skilled computer scientists.' Ernesto Calvo, University of Maryland'It is rare indeed to pick up a new manuscript and immediately think how much you wish it had been written five years earlier, but I suspect many people will have that reaction to this book. This timely, thorough, and remarkably clear tutorial to both R and Python serves as a much needed on ramp to the data part of data science, and will undoubtedly soon grace the bookshelves of many social scientists - both students and their instructors. If you are intrigued by the possibilities of data science but concerned about the start up costs, look no farther: help has arrived.' Joshua Tucker, New York University'If you need to develop new skills in R and Python but you don't know where to start, this is the book for you. With simple language, Magallanes shows you how to install the programs, retrieve data using APIs and scrape Internet sources, and how to get the data ready for modeling. This book is a gem.' Aníbal Pérez-Liñán, University of Pittsburgh'This book will be of great assistance to public policy and management scholars desiring a rigorous introduction to Data Science, particularly with regard to the intricacies of data management. The step-by-step approach will help teachers and students, in both undergraduate and graduate programs, become familiar with essential programming skills, particularly with respect to analyzing Big Data and making it available through Open Government initiatives. The author also provides a very helpful service in using both R and Python to show how to accomplish the same task, which allows readers to decide which of these languages will best serve their needs.' Cambridge University Press Uptalk
Book Synopsis''Uptalk'' is commonly used to refer to rising intonation at the end of declarative sentences, or (to put it more simply) the tendency for people to make statements that sound like questions, a phenomenon that has received wide exposure and commentary in the media. How and where did it originate? Who are the most frequent ''uptalkers''? How much does it vary according to the speaker''s age, gender and regional dialect? Is it found in other languages as well as English? These and other questions are the subject of this fascinating book. Cambridge University Press The Neuroethics of Memory
Book SynopsisThe Neuroethics of Memory is a thematically integrated analysis and discussion of neuroethical questions about memory capacity and content, as well as interventions to alter it. These include: how does memory function enable agency, and how does memory dysfunction disable it? To what extent is identity based on our capacity to accurately recall the past? Could a person who becomes aware during surgery be harmed if they have no memory of the experience? How do we weigh the benefits and risks of brain implants designed to enhance, weaken or erase memory? Can a person be responsible for an action if they do not recall it? Would a victim of an assault have an obligation to retain a memory of this act, or the right to erase it? This book uses a framework informed by neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy combined with actual and hypothetical cases to examine these and related questions.Trade Review'Walter Glannon achieves a rare balance: the book is clear and detailed about the neuroscience of memory and is also insightful about the legal and ethical challenges that scientific advances entail. This is a very timely and useful book.' Nick Davis, Manchester Metropolitan University'Memory is central to who we are and how we act. Provoking and thoughtful, The Neuroethics of Memory explores the implications of the new technologies that could alter memory and may fundamentally change who we are.' Andrew Davidson, Medical Director, Melbourne Children's Trials Centre, Australia'The Neuroethics of Memory provides an insightful and well-argued analysis of the implications of memory research for ethical issues that arise in legal and medical arenas. Drawing on literature from neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, Walter Glannon gracefully illuminates some of the most difficult issues currently facing science and society.' Daniel L. Schacter, William R. Kenan, Jr Professor of Psychology, Harvard University'Walter Glannon has built a fascinating and wide-ranging account of memory. By channeling neurobiology, psychology, law, history, and philosophy, this book summarizes how memory defines who we are and forms the basis of our society. The result is a tour de force of neuroethics at its comprehensive best.' Julian Savulescu, Director of Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford'As a synthesis and critical analysis of current work in several disciplines, this book offers an unparalleled vision of how neuroethics scholarship on memory can be interdisciplinary, rigorous, forward-looking, and compelling.' Cambridge University Press Syntactic Analysis
Book SynopsisIn syntactic analysis, as in linguistics generally, the skills required to first identify, and then make sense of, complex patterns in linguistic data involve a certain specific kind of reasoning, where various alternatives are entertained and modified in light of progressively broader empirical coverage. Rather than focus on transmitting the details of complex theoretical superstructures, this textbook takes a practical, analytical approach, starting from a small set of powerful analytic tools, applied first to simple phenomena and then to the passive, complement and raising/control constructions. The analytic tools are then applied to unbounded dependencies, via detailed argumentation. What emerges is that syntactic structure, and intricate networks of dependencies linking different parts of those structures, are straightforward projections of lexical valence, in tandem with very general rules regulating the sharing of feature values. Featuring integrated exercises and problems throuTable of Contents1. Syntactic data, patterns and structure; 2. Syntactic rules and lexical valence; 3. The auxiliary dependency; 4. Cambridge University Press Language and the Law
Book SynopsisLanguage policy is a topic of growing importance around the world, as issues such as the recognition of linguistic diversity, the establishment of official languages, the status of languages in educational systems, the status of heritage and minority languages, and speakers'' legal rights have come increasingly to the forefront. One fifth of the American population do not speak English as their first language. While race, gender and religious discrimination are recognized as illegal, the US does not currently accord the same protections regarding language; discrimination on the basis of language is accepted, and even promoted, in the name of unity and efficiency. Setting language within the context of America''s history, this book explores the diverse range of linguistic inequalities, covering voting, criminal and civil justice, education, government and public services, and the workplace, and considers how linguistic differences challenge our fundamental ideals of democracy, justice aTrade Review'There is no doubt that this collection will be useful to lawyers and other supporters of rights, as well as to students of language policy and management study of the slow progress of legal recognition in the USA of non-English language rights. Cambridge University Press Peace Education How We Come to Love and Hate War
Book SynopsisThere is a huge volume of work on war and its causes, most of which treats its political and economic roots. In Peace Education: How We Come to Love and Hate War, Nel Noddings explores the psychological factors that support war: nationalism, hatred, delight in spectacles, masculinity, religious extremism and the search for existential meaning. She argues that while schools can do little to reduce the economic and political causes, they can do much to moderate the psychological factors that promote violence by helping students understand the forces that manipulate them.Trade Review“Noddings helps us understand our fascination with war and why education for peace has had so much difficulty gaining a toehold in American classrooms. This book offers not only a cogent critique of the place of war and peace in education but also numerous suggestions for teaching (and living) approaches based in caring. Once again, Noddings demonstrates why philosophy matters in helping us think clearly about what we should be teaching in schools.” – Margaret Crocco, University of Iowa“Noddings brings the ethics of care into the field of peace studies with this insightful book. She wants us to care for the victims of war and the warriors who fight. She critiques the overly moralistic language of pacifism and just war tradition. She reminds us of the important contributions to peace education of women such as Virginia Woolf and Jane Addams. And she encourages us to imagine new ways to educate children in order to build a more peaceful future.” – Andrew Fiala, California State University, Fresno“This is essential reading for those who are uncertain about why we fight in wars, and even more, for those who are certain that they know. At a time when armed conflict is not exceptional but the norm, every educator, parent, politician, and member of our armed forces should read this book. By probing the psychological underpinnings of why we fight, Noddings moves us beyond the well-rehearsed clichés about teaching peace and into the consequential realms of emotion, alienation, and the quest for meaning.” – Joel Westheimer, University of Ottawa"Noddings (emer., Stanford Univ.) provides a compelling overview of "how we come to love and hate war.".... All disciplines, not only history, need to incorporate expanded considerations of peace and war.... Recommended..." –R. Roth, emerita, Rockhurst University, CHOICE"...The book as a whole proposes a variety of ideas.... offers information that will educate the reader. Cambridge University Press Political Journalism in Comparative Perspective
Book SynopsisPolitical journalism is often under fire. Conventional wisdom and much scholarly research suggest that journalists are cynics and political pundits. Political news is void of substance and overly focused on strategy and persons. Citizens do not learn from the news, are politically cynical, and are dissatisfied with the media. This book challenges these assumptions, which are often based on single-country studies with limited empirical observations about the relation between news production, content, and journalism''s effects. Based on interviews with journalists, a systematic content analysis of political news, and panel survey data in different countries, this book tests how different systems and media-politics relations condition the contents of political news. It shows how different content creates different effects and demonstrates that under the right circumstances citizens learn from political news, do not become cynical, and are satisfied with political journalism.Trade Review'This book is a best-practice example of comparative research on news and political communication. By combining journalist surveys, content analyses, and panel surveys, it follows the entire political communication process in four countries. It demonstrates that different conditions create different kinds of political journalism, and it identifies those conditions most favorable to democratic news performance. This is an extremely informed, compellingly argued, and insightful assessment of political journalism in Europe. Moreover, it sets a new standard in comparative media research.' In this book readers will find an overview of the main concepts and critical arguments surrounding how language and communication styles distinguish and identify groups.Trade Review'This is the book we were waiting for. An informed and innovative introduction that makes us appreciate speech communities as sites for socialization, contestation, and creativity. We come away with a much better understanding of the authority of standard languages, the creativity of marginalized speech styles, and the attraction of new forms of digital literacy. A great resource for teaching and thinking critically about the power of language as well as its limitations.' Alessandro Duranti, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles'Marcyliena Morgan has provided a lucid depiction of speech communities that are global in scope and mindful of the growing technological impact of social media and internet communication. This book will be of significance and interest to scholars in the social sciences, humanities, as well as education and communication studies. The foundations of the book are interdisciplinary and classical, while its conclusions are keenly insightful - if not visionary.' John Baugh, Margaret Bush Wilson Professor in Arts and Sciences, Washington University, St Louis, and Professor Emeritus of Education and Linguistics, Stanford University'Morgan's book is a knowledgeable and informative introduction to speech communities, their formation, development, and organization, as well as a valuable analysis of the interaction between speech communities and the socio-political structures in which they are immersed.' Cambridge University Press The Life of Sir Anthony Panizzi KCB 2 Volume Set Late Principal Librarian of the British Museum Senator of Italy Etc 12 Cambridge Library British and Irish History 19th Century
Book SynopsisAnthony Panizzi (1797â1879), born in Brescello, Italy, qualified as a lawyer, but fled to Switzerland in 1823 to avoid arrest for his political activities in support of Italian unification. He then moved to England, where he became a naturalised British subject. The patronage of Lord Brougham, the Lord Chancellor, got him a post in the British Museum Library, where he remained for thirty-five years. He was responsible for the great expansion of the library, the building of the famous round Reading Room, and the compilation of cataloguing rules which remain influential today. Panizzi was knighted for services to librarianship, and is commemorated by the annual Panizzi lectures at the British Library. His continuing support of Italian independence was recognised by his appointment to the Italian senate. This two-volume biography by his colleague Louis Fagan (1845â1903) was published in 1880.

Cambridge University Press The Italic Dialects 2 Volume Set
Book SynopsisPublished in 1897, this two-volume work by Robert Seymour Conway (1864?1933), classical scholar and comparative philologist, later Hulme Professor of Latin at the University of Manchester, aims to shed light on the origins of the Latin language and Roman institutions by careful examination of the dialects and customs of Rome''s neighbours. The work is laid out in geographical order, so that the influence of one dialect on its neighbours can be traced. The first volume collects all the surviving remains of Oscan, Umbrian and other minor Italic dialects, gleaned primarily from epigraphic sources (such as Oscan inscriptions at Pompeii), but also from the evidence of coins, glosses and other references in later writers, and geographical and proper names from the dialect areas. The second volume contains an alphabet, a grammar and syntax of the dialects, appendices, indexes of names and a glossary of the dialect words.

Cambridge University Press Compounds and Compounding
Book SynopsisAre compounds words or phrases - or are they neither or both? How should we classify compounds? How can we deal with the fact that the relationship between the elements of sugar pill (''pill made of sugar'') is different from that in sea-sickness pill (''pill to prevent sea-sickness'')? Are compounds a linguistic universal? How much do languages vary in the way their compounds work? Why do we need compounds, when there are other ways of creating the same meanings? Are so-called neoclassical compounds like photograph really compounds? Based on more than forty years'' research, this controversial new book sets out to answer these and many other questions.Trade Review'This monograph features all four 'I's' characteristic of Bauer's 'trademark': an Illuminating, Ingenious, Insightful and In-depth analysis. Cambridge University Press Metaphors in the Mind
Book SynopsisAbstract concepts are often embodied through metaphor. For example, we talk about moving through time in metaphorical terms, as if we were moving through space, allowing us to ''look back'' on past events. Much of the work on embodied metaphor to date has assumed a single set of universal, shared bodily experiences that motivate our understanding of abstract concepts. This book explores sources of variation in people''s experiences of embodied metaphor, including, for example, the shape and size of one''s body, one''s age, gender, state of mind, physical or linguistic impairments, personality, ideology, political stance, religious beliefs, and linguistic background. It focuses on the ways in which people''s experiences of metaphor fluctuate over time within a single communicative event or across a lifetime. Combining theoretical argument with findings from new studies, Littlemore analyses sources of variation in embodied metaphor and provides a deeper understanding of the nature of embTrade Review'Lucidly written and well argued, the monograph successfully shows us why this project is worth pursuing.' Shengxi Jin, Journal of PragmaticsTable of Contents1. 'I am trying to climb Everest in flip-flops.' What is embodied metaphor and where does it come from?; 2. 'Would you prefer a pencil or an antiseptic wipe?' What evidence is there for embodied metaphor and why is it important to consider this variation?; 3. 'I'm running on this soapy conveyor belt with people throwing wet sponges at me.' Which metaphors are embodied and when? Variation according to type, function and context; 4. 'This one sounds like a bell and this one sounds like when you're dead.' Age, and the developmental nature of embodied metaphor; 5. 'I did not know where I started and where I ended.' Different bodies: different minds? How handedness, body shape and gender affect the way we experience the world through metaphor; 6. 'Those cookies tasted of regret and rotting flesh.' Sensory metaphor and associated impairments and conditions; 7. 'Things come out of my mouth that shouldn't be there.' 'Altered minds': the impact of depression and psychological disorders on the way people experience the world through metaphor; 8. 'This is my body which will be given up for you.'
