Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Think Tank Library: Brain-Based Learning Plans

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTransform your library into a "think tank" by helping teachers create an active learning environment in which students question, investigate, synthesize, conclude, and present information based on Common Core standards. The rigors of today's mandated academic standards can repurpose your library's role as a steward of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) at your school. Created for teachers of grades 6 through 12, this guide will help you help present exciting, field-tested lessons that address developmental steps and individual differences in key competencies in the CCSS. Authors and educators Mary Ratzer and Paige Jaeger illustrate how brain-based learning helps students become deep, critical thinkers, and provide the lesson plans to coax the best thinking out of each child. This tool book presents strategies to help learners progress from novice to expert thinker; challenge students with questions that lead to inquiry; incorporate "rigor" into lessons; and use model lesson plans to change instruction. Beginning chapters introduce the basics of instruction and provide ideas for expert cognitive growth of the brain. Sample lessons are aligned with key curriculum areas, including science, social studies, music, art, and physical education.

Book SynopsisDuring the 1740s, literate Russians mostly kept to traditional forms of written language. Although the linguistic reforms undertaken by Peter the Great earlier in the century affected printed secular texts and the imperial administration, these reforms were less radical than often assumed. This study draws conclusions based on an analysis that differs from earlier ones. First of all, the study examines the Russian language during a comparatively little-known decade of the eighteenth century. In doing so, it takes into account not only strictly linguistic data, but also developments in Russian society. Second, the investigation analyzes sources that are seldom valued for their linguistic content, thus offering a broader perspective on the Russian language of the period. Trade Review“This book offers a meticulous examination of written Russian texts dating to the 1740s, the first decade of Tsarina Elizabeth’s reign. … The author’s methodology will inform future investigations of brief time periods in the history of Russian language usage needed to better understand the country’s social development. Academic Studies Press A History of Ottoman Libraries

Book SynopsisA History of Ottoman Libraries tells the story of the development and the organization of Ottoman libraries from the fourteenth through the twentieth century. In the first part, the book surveys the phases through which the Ottoman libraries evolved from a few shelves of books to sizable, endowed collections housed in free-standing library buildings. Ottoman libraries were mainly established as charitable foundations, that is by endowing the books and steady income for the maintenance of the collection and the library building. The second part of the book focuses on the organization, the personnel, and the day-to-day functioning of Ottoman libraries. This first complete history of Ottoman libraries was written based on hitherto untapped archival sources.Trade Review“А Нistory of Ottoman Libraries is based on meticulous research which covers а mind-boggling amount of archival documents from different institutions…It also has the great merit of nanking important scholarship in Turkish accessible to an English reading scholarly audience…[This book] is а systematic, well-researched, and carefully argued woгk that will, no doubt, become an extremely important reference work fог future reseaгch on topics pertaining to the Ottoman library system and to individual libraries. No comparable survey of the library system has been written to this day.”— Feras Krimsti, Gotha Reseaгch Libгary, University of Erfurt, Archivum Ottmanicum“A History of Ottoman Libraries is a timely addition to Ottoman intellectual history. Erünsal, who has published widely in Turkish on Ottoman libraries, noted the gap in Anglophone scholarship regarding this topic and duly assembled this book. … İsmail E. Erünsal's work has something to offer to all book lovers and historians alike with its comprehensive detailing of the institution of the Ottoman library.”— Gemma Masson, World History Encyclopedia“Surely a study that historians of Ottoman culture will refer to for many decades, this work impresses the reader by the broad documentation on libraries containing manuscripts germane to Islamic studies, which the author has investigated during a long and distinguished career. Prof. Erünsal has used a large number of pious/charitable foundation deeds made out by members of the Ottoman governing elite as well as by rich and public-spirited persons desiring to promote Islamic scholarship. His work thus clarifies how book collections until the later 1600s always were part of Islamic colleges, acquiring the manuscripts needed by their teachers and students. Even when eighteenth-century donors established independent libraries, these institutions often allowed for teaching, perhaps to a group of amateurs broader than the students and teachers benefiting from college libraries. After all, the latter were part of institutions, whose aim was to prepare students for careers as judges and teachers. Moreover, the author explains in a cogent fashion how in the nineteenth century, the dependence of Ottoman libraries on the conditions established by long-deceased founders made adaptation to the needs of a modernizing empire very difficult. In addition, Prof. Erünsal has cleared up misunderstandings that have bedeviled historians for a long time. In particular, twentieth-century scholars had often assumed that the order of the chief mufti serving Ahmed III (r. 1703-30), to the effect that texts concerning non-religious disciplines could not be part of foundation libraries and thus were liable to confiscation, was an expression of hostility against non-religious learning on the part of the Ottoman religious elite. By contrast, Prof. Erünsal has convincingly argued in favor of an ad hoc fatwa that the sultan demanded from a compliant chief mufti: a reminder that throughout history, powerful people might conjure up supposedly religious or cultural arguments so that they could satisfy their acquisitive instincts.”– Suraiya Faroqhi, Professor (Retired), Ludwig Maximilians Universität; Professor of History, Ibn Haldun University, IstanbulTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIllustrationsNote on Transcription and DatesPrefaceIntroductionPart 1: Historical Development1. Book SynopsisAlex Horne loves words. He loves them so much, in fact, that he's decided to invent his own ... and get them into the dictionary. But, as Alex discovers, gaining entry into the official lexicon takes more than just a gentle word in the ear of the editor. Evidence is required - Alex needs proof that his words are being spoken by more people than just him and his mum. He needs what the dictionary authorities call a 'corpus' of examples, hard data showing that his new words are in widespread and long-term usage. So a corpus he resolves to create, no matter what obstacles he might meet on the way. This is the epic and ridiculous story of one man's struggle to break into the dictionary. From covert word-dropping on Countdown to wilfully misinforming schoolchildren, Alex tries it all in his quest for dictionary-based immortality. Does he succeed? Are you already using one of Alex's words without realising it? How do engineers collaborate with other disciplines to deliver interventions contributing to peacebuilding and diplomatic efforts in conflict-affected, conflict-sensitive, and fragile community environments? How should engineers be trained in lifelong practice to do so? What principles should the engineering profession uphold while participating in peacebuilding and diplomatic initiatives? How does the engineering profession serve the local and global public good? The book emphasizes the importance of developing programs such as peace engineering and engineering diplomacy and training globally engaged engineers with attitudes, skills, knowledge, and life-long experience to address the challenges of the 21st century. Engineering is not only about delivering technology. It involves developing and implementing solutions that benefit people and the planet (nature-based solutions), contribute to prosperity, create partnerships, and promote peace. Book SynopsisChristianity as a cultural force, whether rising or falling, has seldom been analysed through the actual processes by which tradition is transmitted, modified, embraced or rejected. This book achieves that end through a study of bishops of the Church of England, their wives and their children, to show how values fostered in the vicarage and palace shape family, work and civic life in a supposedly secular age. Davies and Guest integrate, for the first time, sociological concepts of spiritual capital with anthropological ideas of gift-theory and, alongside theological themes, use these to illuminate how the religious professional functions in mediating tradition and fostering change. Motifs of distant prelates, managerially-minded fathers in God and rebellious clergy children are reconsidered in a critical light as new empirical evidence offers unique insights into how the clergy family functions as an axis of social power in an age incredulous to ecclesiastical hierarchy. Bishops, WiTrade Review'This is a fascinating and insightful sociological study of the Church of England which deserves wide readership. The question it addresses - that of the transmission of spiritual capital across generations - is a crucially important one and its conclusions should be of interest to all those concerned for the good of English society.' The Rt Revd Dr John Inge, Bishop of Huntingdon 'There are many myths and misunderstandings about Bishops and their households which this wise and reflective book will go a long way to dispel.' The Rt Revd Kenneth Stevenson, Bishop of Portsmouth ’There is much to be learned here from the frankness with which hitherto unacknowledged problems are exposed. It is clear that this is a book that might profitably be read by all married bishops, and by other clergy, too, as a basis for self-examination... It deserves to be read, not least by those who see scope in themselves for becoming better clerical parents, as well as by those responsible for providing the contexts in which such parents live and work.’ Church Times ’...this is a solid, original and important work that deserves close reading. The study is an excellent example of how sociology might be applied to theological understandings.’ New Blackfriars ’Through new findings and a helpful review of existing knowledge, this book makes a valuable contribution to understanding of the lives of bishops and their families and the significant contribution that they have made to British culture in the twentieth century.’ Rural Theology ’... of interest to the practical theologian because of the questions it raises about the transmission of religious faith within the clergy family and the corresponding questions it raises about the lack of transmission in many modern families that do not share the same characteristics as the families investigated.’ Practical Theology ’However one analyses the spiritual capital flowing from episcopal homes, this research is a good aTable of ContentsBishops, Wives and Children
