  • Theory of Information and its Value

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Theory of Information and its Value

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis English version of Ruslan L. Stratonovich’s Theory of Information (1975) builds on theory and provides methods, techniques, and concepts toward utilizing critical applications. Unifying theories of information, optimization, and statistical physics, the value of information theory has gained recognition in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. With the emergence of a data-driven economy, progress in machine learning, artificial intelligence algorithms, and increased computational resources, the need for comprehending information is essential. This book is even more relevant today than when it was first published in 1975. It extends the classic work of R.L. Stratonovich, one of the original developers of the symmetrized version of stochastic calculus and filtering theory, to name just two topics. Each chapter begins with basic, fundamental ideas, supported by clear examples; the material then advances to great detail and depth. The reader is not required to be familiar with the more difficult and specific material. Rather, the treasure trove of examples of stochastic processes and problems makes this book accessible to a wide readership of researchers, postgraduates, and undergraduate students in mathematics, engineering, physics and computer science who are specializing in information theory, data analysis, or machine learning.Trade Review“The book could be useful in advanced graduate courses with students, who are not afraid of integrals and probabilities.” (Jaak Henno, zbMATH 1454.94002, 2021)Table of Contents

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book describes a new approach to teaching foreign languages for primary and secondary school that shifts the attention from learning the language to communicate skillfully in the foreign language. The approach focuses on developing students’ literacy skills as a way to discover language and make it meaningful. In the first four chapters the rationale for the approach is explained and illustrated with examples from different units of work in different languages (French, English and Spanish). Chapter 5 talks the reader through a complete unit of work based on a YouTube video, while chapter 6 looks at how this approach can be integrated into an existing curriculum. The book ends by looking at teachers and their difficulties in implementing this approach, and finally sets the Literacy Approach against recent developments in education. • 21st Century Media and Female Mental Health:

Springer International Publishing AG 21st Century Media and Female Mental Health:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book examines the conversations around gendered mental health in contemporary Western media culture. While early 21st century-media was marked by a distinct focus on happiness, productivity and success, during the 2010s negative feelings and discussions around mental health have become increasingly common in that same media landscape. This book traces this turn to sadness in women’s media culture and shows that it emerged indirectly as a result of a culture overtly focused on happiness. By tracing the coverage of mental health issues in magazines, among female celebrities, and on social media this book shows how an increasingly intimate media environment has made way for a profitable vulnerability, that takes the shape of marketable and brand-friendly mental illness awareness that strengthens the authenticity of those who embrace it. But at the same time sad girl cultures are proliferating on social media platforms, creating radically honest spaces where those who suffer get support, and more capacious ways of feeling bad are formed. Using discourse analysis and digital ethnography to study contemporary representations of mental illness and sadness in Western popular media and social media, this book takes a feminist media studies approach to popular discourse, understanding the conversations happening around mental health in these sites to function as scripts for how to think about and experience mental illness and sadnessTable of Contents1. • Lingua Franca and Français Tirailleur: From Sea

Springer International Publishing AG Lingua Franca and Français Tirailleur: From Sea

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores how the eponymous and original Lingua Franca was recognized as a potential linguistic template for future military and colonial pidgins. The author traces the career trajectory of General Louis Faidherbe, a member of the French colonizing force in Algiers in the early 1830s and a recognized linguist, who rose up through the ranks in various African colonies and was the founder of regiments in West Africa, including the Senegal-based tirailleurs. Their artificially constructed military pidgin, Français Tirailleur, was a language modelled on the reduced grammar and lexicon of Lingua Franca. This book demonstrates the direct link between the two languages, as well as connections with other colonial pidgins in Asia that also derived to some extent from Lingua Franca. It will be of interest to students and scholars of language contact and language history, pidgins and creoles, and military and colonial history. Table of ContentsChapter 1: The evolution of Lingua Franca to Sabir and beyond.- Chapter 2: Louis Faidherbe, colonialist and linguist.- Chapter 3: Parallels of Sabir and Français Tirailleur.- Chapter 4: The mixed fortunes of Sabir.

  • The CPEC and SDGs in Pakistan

Springer International Publishing AG The CPEC and SDGs in Pakistan

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe China-Pakistan-Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship project of Belt and Road Initiative by China. This project has attracted much of the focus and attention owing to its geostrategic significance where it connects China with Pakistan through the strategic port of Gwader and through a network of road and rail connection, henceforth improving China's and Pakistan's outreach in the Asian, African and European markets. This study takes a new direction and examines the development of CPEC projects across Pakistan by choosing six projects in both rural and urban areas and their impact on the daily lives of people as reflected in three crucial Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) encapsulated by the United Nationsgood health and wellbeing, inclusive and equitable quality education, and decent work and economic growth (SDGs 3, 4, and 8, respectively). This is a new approach used to study the impact of the CPEC beyond geopolitics and for the common people in Pakistan who are directly or indirectly affected by various CPEC projects. This is under studied aspect of the literature on CPEC and this monograph adequately fills the gap in literature. The study takes a deep dive into 6 CPEC projects i.e., Sahiwal Coal Power Plant, Orange Line Metro Train, Lahore, Rasahkai Special Economic Zone, Peshawar-D.I.Khan Motorway, Kohala Hydro Power Project and Neelum-Jehlum Power project to understand how these projects have affected the lives of common people through their impact on SDGs 3,4 and 8. For the first time people's centric approach has been adopted to evaluate the development impacts of the CPEC.

  • Seferis and Elytis as Translators

Verlag Peter Lang Seferis and Elytis as Translators

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGeorge Seferis and Odysseus Elytis gave the Modern Greek language a substantial corpus of translations from poets working in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, English and Ancient Greek. However, the translation practices of these two Nobel Prize-winning poets have long been inadequately observed. The present volume provides a close examination of Seferis’ and Elytis’ inter- and intra-lingual verse translations with the aim of discovering their translating techniques and their personal and public goals in pursuing the act of translation. Similarities and differences between the two poets are highlighted comparatively. The methodological approach, informed by recent findings in the field of descriptive translation studies and polysystem theories, investigates the function of translation in the target culture and the relation of translation to original poetic production. Throughout the book the study of translation is shown to be a powerful tool for the study of Modern Greek literature and its relation to other literatures and movements of the time, while the task of the translator and the task of the writer unfold as two components of the same endeavour.Table of ContentsContents: Seferis’ translation of The Waste Land – Translation as acclimatization: The intralingual verse translations of Seferis and Elytis – Translation and intertextuality – Seferis’ notes for an essay on translation – Two unpublished translations by George Seferis.

De Gruyter Manuscripts and Performances in Religions, Arts,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThroughout history, manuscripts have been made and used for religious, artistic, and scientific performances, and this practice continues in most cultures today. By focusing on the role manuscripts have in different kinds of performances, this volume contributes to the evolving field of investigating written artefacts and their functions. The collected essays regard manuscripts as points of intersection where textual, material, and performative aspects converge. The contributors analyse manuscripts in their forms and functions as well as their positioning in the performances for which they were made. These aspects unfold across the volume’s three sections, examining how manuscripts are (1) used backstage, for preparing and giving instructions for performances; (2) taken onstage, contributing to the enactment of performances; and (3) performers in their own right, producing an effect on the audience. The diversified, interdisciplinary, and innovative methodologies of the included papers carry great potential to expand the traditional approaches of manuscript studies and find application outside the contributors’ respective fields.

  • Agogic Maps: From Musical Phrasing to Enhancement

Springer International Publishing AG Agogic Maps: From Musical Phrasing to Enhancement

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the value of the musical concept of “agogics” – the modification of regular rhythm to enhance expressive potential – in understanding urban spatial configurations within the current technological context and in developing urban maps that exploit sonic signals to create an open learning framework. The book starts by discussing the meaning and significance of agogics in the musical and artistic realm, with reference to the work of Adolphe Appia, Emile-Jaques Dalcroze, and Iannis Xenakis, among others. Its relevance to cartography and mapping is then examined, taking into account the contributions of Ian McHarg, Bill Hillier, Mark Shepard, and Robin Minard. The nature and value of agogic maps, for example in fostering awareness of place and effective organization of spatial development, are described in detail, with reference to case studies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Segrate, Italy. It is explained how agogic maps take advantage of innovative categories and scripting equipment to provide a new mapping instrument for spatial and urban configurations, highlighting the interdependence between aural signals and spatial variables. This book will be of interest to architects, urbanists, and musicians with a specific interest in space and sound design.Table of ContentsAgogic in music: The practice of rhythm, from music to space and backward.- Agogic in space: A scenario for the Gesamtkustwerk.- Agogic and the space “undulated”.- Urban spectrographies and the problem of orientation in sensitive territories.- Space-script construction: Three phases in a topographic transformation of sound and visual material.- Euphony: Dissonances for a modern urban environment. • Robotics Goes MOOC: Impact

Springer International Publishing AG Robotics Goes MOOC: Impact

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIt is often read in the media that AI and Robotics are the primary cause of technology unemployment. AI and machine learning techniques are expected to take over lower-level tasks, while humans can spend more time with higher-level tasks. In perspective, it can be said that jobs requiring boring cognitive tasks or repeatable and dangerous physical tasks will be considerably shredded by automation thanks to the wide adoption of AI & Robotics technology to replace humans, while jobs requiring challenging cognitive tasks or unstructured physical tasks will be suitably re-engineered with the progressive introduction of AI & Robotics technology to assist humans. From the discussion above, it should be clear that in a world populated by humans and robots, issues arise that go beyond engineering and technology due to the impact resulting from the use of robots in various application scenarios. The anthropization of robots cannot ignore the resolution of those ethical, legal, sociological, economic (ELSE) problems that have so far slowed their spread in our society. The final book of the Robotics Goes MOOC project enlightens the impact of using robotic technology in the main fields of application, namely, industrial robots as in Chapter 1 by Bischoff et al, medical robotics as in Chapter 2 by Dario et al, aerial robots as in Chapter 3 by Ollero et al, orbital robotics as in Chapter 4 by Lampariello, underwater robots in Chapter 5 by Antonelli, and rescue robots as in Chapter 6 by Murphy. The last part is devoted to the open dilemma of using and accepting robots in human co-habited environments which is addressed in Chapter 7 on social robotics by Pandey and the very final chapter by Tamburrini on the important issues raised with roboethics.Table of Contents1 Bischoff, Industrial Robots.- 2 Dario, Medical Robots.- 3 Ollero, Aerial Robots.- 4 Lampariello, Space Robots.- 5 Antonelli, Underwater Robots.- 6 Murphy, Rescue Robots.- 7 Pandey, Social Robots.- 8 Tamburrini, Ethical Legal and Societal Issues.

  • Robotics Goes MOOC: Interaction

Springer International Publishing AG Robotics Goes MOOC: Interaction

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWith the massive and pervasive diffusion of robotics technology in our society, we are heading towards a new type of AI, which we call Physical AI at the intersection of Robotics with AI, that is the science of robots and intelligent machines performing a physical action to help humans in their jobs of daily lives. Physical assistance to disabled or elderly people; reduction of risks and fatigue at work; improvement of production processes of material goods and their sustainability; safety, efficiency and reduction of environmental impact in transportation of people and goods; progress of diagnostic and surgical techniques are all examples of scenarios where the new InterAction Technology (IAT) is indispensable. The interaction between robots and humans must be managed in a safe and reliable manner. The robot becomes an ideal assistant, like the tool used by a surgeon, a craftsman, a skilled worker. The new generation of robots will co-exist — the cobots — with humans not only in the workplace but, gradually, in homes and communities, providing support in services, entertainment, education, health, manufacturing and care.As widely discussed above, interaction plays a crucial role for the development of modern robotic systems. Grasping, manipulation and cooperative manipulators are covered in the first part of the third book of the Robotics Goes MOOC project, respectively in Chapter 1 by Prattichizzo et al, Chapter 2 by Kao et al, and Chapter 3 by Caccavale. Specific interaction issues along with the development of digital and physical interfaces are dealt with in Chapter 4 by Marchal et al and in Chapter 5 by Croft et al, respectively. Interaction between robot and human also means that a robot can be worn by a human as presented in Chapter 6 by Vitiello et al. A different type of interaction at a cognitive and planning level is the focus of Chapter 7 by Lima devoted to multi-robot systems and Chapter 8 by Song et al on networked, cloud and fog robotics, respectively.Table of Contents1 Prattichizzo, Grasping.- 2 Kao, Manipulation.- 3 Caccavale, Cooperative Robots.- 4 Hollerbach, Haptics and Virtual Reality.- 5 Croft, Human−Robot Interaction.- 6 Vitiello, Wearable Robots.- 7 Sukhatme, Multiple Robots.- 8 Song, Networked Robots.
