Book SynopsisThe Red Star and the Crescent provides an in-depth and multi-disciplinary analysis of the evolving relationship between China and the Middle East. Despite its increasing importance, very few studies have examined this dynamic, deepening, and multi-faceted nexus. James Reardon-Anderson has sought to fill this critical gap.The volume examines the 'big picture' of international relations, then zooms in on case studies and probes the underlying domestic factors on each side. Reardon-Anderson tackles topics as diverse as China's security strategy in the Middle East, its military relations with the states of the region, its role in the Iran nuclear negotiations, the Uyghur question, and the significance and consequences of the Silk Road strategy. A comprehensive study of the changing forces driving one of the world's most important strategic, economic and cultural relationships.Trade Review‘A rigorous and thought-provoking new book . . . deserves to be regarded as an authority, both for students of China’s rise and for those who are concerned that the Middle East may become a focal point for a future superpower conflagration.’ 'A balanced, perceptive and thought-provoking book that advances our understanding of the evolving relationship of China and the Middle East.’ 'Reardon-Anderson has assembled the definitive edited volume on China-Middle East relations. Interdisciplinary, rigorous, and fusing the combined talents of its many illustrious contributors, it deserves to be read by a very wide range of scholars, diplomats, and foreign correspondents.' -- Christopher Davidson, Reader in Middle East Politics, Durham University, and author of 'Shadow Wars: The Secret Struggle for the Middle East'‘This book is a comprehensive study of China’s strategic vision and policies. It is a valuable resource for academics and policy planners with an interest in China and the Muslim world.’ -- The Muslim World Book Review'Highly interesting . . . a sober and much needed contribution.' 'Insightful . . . unique and important.' ‘The essays on the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative provide refreshingly detailed and experienced perspectives. . . . Most of the essays in The Red Star & the Crescent are written by China experts rather than Middle East experts, and the book is all the stronger for that. The Chinese perspective comes through clearly and there is plenty of detail.’'A comprehensive overview of China's relations with an area which is much neglected but increasingly important to it - the Middle East. The merit of this work is the diversity of authors, from Chinese to regional to external perspectives - and the depth of their expertise.' -- Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director, Lau China Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Indian Ocean's strategic importance to China cannot be underestimated, given the oil, African minerals and container traffic that pass through it. Yet, until now, China has been absent from the region since Admiral Zheng He sailed his fleet through in the fifteenth century, exploring and mapping the waters in a bid to extend the Celestial Empire's trading and tributary system. Beijing's re-entry into the Indian Ocean after 600 years is part of Xi Jinping's 'Belt and Road' megaproject. He is investing trillions of dollars in infrastructure projects around the Ocean rim, including a military base in Djibouti. This has touched off a new and dangerous confrontation. Ranged against China is an informal alliance of India, the US, France, Australia, and, predictably, Japan--Beijing's arch-rival in the Asia–Pacific. Bertil Lintner unearths this dramatic story, profiling the key players, examining the economic and naval balance of power, and scrutinising New Delhi and Beijing's intense competition for the allegiance of small island nations. China is in the Indian Ocean for the long haul, and the entry of big-power politics into this sensitive maritime region will shape its future for decades to come.Trade Review‘Meticulously chronicled . . . [an] illuminating view from the field.'‘Lintner’s decades of reporting from all over Asia lend him shrewd insight into the region’s geography and politics.’ -- Foreign Affairs'Enlightening.'‘Lintner’s book offers more than an account of Chinese efforts to extend its economic, diplomatic and military presence to the far-flung islands of the Indian Ocean. It is a primer on the history and politics of the Indian Ocean rim largely ignored by the mainstream media.' -- Global Asia'A detailed and intriguing account of the rising Chinese superpower's Indian Ocean manoeuvres in a budding new cold war among atolls and island states. This is an indispensable reference tool for anyone interested in this region and in the future of our global order.' -- Lars Ellström, author of 'Road to Kashgar: Notes from a Walk through China''Four-fifths of the container traffic between Asia and the rest of the world, and three-fifths of the world's oil supplies, pass through the Indian Ocean. The new great game takes place here. This book is a comprehensive and enthralling guide to the Ocean's geopolitics, China's designs for the future of the region and the precarious search for balance. Highly recommended.' -- Bruno Maçães, author of 'Belt and Road: A Chinese World Order'

Book SynopsisThis work proposes a framework based on the concept of a fair distribution of environmental space to include the diverse needs of North and South. Drawing on research in 38 countries, it aims to give an equitable basis for global development in order to achieve sustainable consumption by the year 2050. The environmental space approach seeks to explain the limitations of the global market economy as a tool of development and to give us the means to alter it in order to achieve a genuine quality of life, rather than simple economic growth. In addition, this book seeks to urge all countries and peoples to consider and evaluate the environmental space approach and to join in a movement towards sustainable production and consumption for the 21st century.Table of ContentsPreface * A New Approach to Global Development * The Global Commons: Wild Frontier to Full world * Managing the Global Commons - North and South, One World? 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe importance of involving the poor recipients in planning and implementing development policies has long been recognized, and has been the official aim of large donors, including the World Bank and major donor agencies. This text assesses their success and the results of the primary stakeholder participation achieved. It analyzes the institutional changes necessary for stakeholders to participate in decision-making, and the strategies and behaviour of other parties involved, including NGOs. From this review and analysis, it draws an important range of lessons for future donor and NGO policies and organizational reform.Trade Review'A well researched, well argued book.' Aubrey Williams, former Participation Coordinator, World Bank 'This is a superb account of the efforts undertaken by international development agencies to introduce the simple but powerful notion that the poor must participate if development is to succeed.' Brian Atwood, President, Citizens International, former Administrator, USAID 'The book comes up with a number of lessons which are worthwhile to be considered.' Habitat International 'Carolyn Long's rich, historical and comparative analysis of efforts by civil society to mainstream participation in the development paradigm is an excellent and practical addition to arguments for placing the poor at the centre of development efforts.' Lisa Jordan, Program Officer, Governance and Civil Society, Ford Foundation, former Executive Director, Bank Information Center 'This book is a thoughtful analysis of the progress made by donors and agencies during the past decade to embrace participation as an imperative, and makes an important contribution to our understanding of how to effectively involve citizens in the donor-assisted social and economic development programmes of their governments. It sounds a hopeful note for what donors, governments and civil society can do together to foster participatory development in the future, and shares useful lessons on how to improve development practices.' Out of stock

Book Synopsis' Measuring the sustainability of development is crucial to achieving it, and is one of the most actively studied issues in the area. To date, most studies of measurements or indicators have been largely theoretical. However, this book, a follow-on to Bell and Morse's highly influential Sustainability Indicators (1999), presents valuable practical advice on how to develop measurements that will work in real-life development contexts. It describes and analyses how to derive, validate and apply indicators in the course of an actual development project - in this case the Mediterranean Action Plan in Malta. The authors explain the trade-offs and constraints involved and how it is possible to combine the open-ended and flexible perspectives of sustainability with the more linear processes and fixed targets of specific projects through the use of pragmatic and reflective methodologies.Trade ReviewPresents valuable practical advice on how to develop measurements that will work in real-life development contexts.' Natural Resources Journal 'The colourful and reflective presentation of the process - which brought people together in defining their own set of sustainability indicators and helped them apply these indicators in policy making - is the most valuable contribution of the book to the increasing field of works in the indicator business.' 4 in stock

Book SynopsisInitiated in 1978, China’s reform and opening up is regarded as the greatest economic transformation in the country’s history. By changing the property ownership system and altering the structure of resource distribution, the Communist Party was able to reform its former planned economy and open up its closed economic system. In the decades that have followed, China has pushed forward the reform of its economic, political, cultural, social and ecological systems. It has also intensified its economic interaction with other nations by relaxing, and even abolishing, many kinds of restrictive policies, in the process stimulating foreign trade and attracting huge amounts of overseas investment.China is now entering a crucial phase that requires even more thorough reform, complete opening up and constant improvement of the socialist market economic system. This book analyses the experiences and achievements of this process. It focuses on how the country enhanced the role of market forces in its economy, advanced opening up and set up a variety of development zones across the country. Lively and packed with case studies, China’s Reform and Opening Up gives a fascinating insight into how a relatively poor and backward country achieved such rapid development, and how it rose from being the world's 10th largest economy in 1978 to the second largest today.

  • China’s New Strategies for Governing the Country

ACA Publishing Limited China’s New Strategies for Governing the Country

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisTo say that China is a nation in transition is both a statement of the obvious and also a massive understatement. In the last 30 years, this country of 1.4 billion people has experienced annual economic growth of 10% or more, which has brought it to the forefront of the world’s trading nations. It has seen great shifts of population – over half its citizens now live in cities compared with just one-fifth before the reform process began – and huge changes to its social and legal structures. It has industrialized and modernized faster than any society has ever attempted before.China now looks forward to an era of consolidating that position and of evolving all of its political, legal, social and environmental structures to carry progress forward to 2020 and beyond. In eight chapters, the authors of this book describe how the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by General Secretary Xi Jinping intends to guide the country on its continuing path to greater prosperity. The chapters explore: China’s economy and the steps needed to make it fit for the years ahead; the ongoing processes of reform and opening up; the rule of law in the specific context of Chinese society; and evolution of China’s political systems. There are chapters on the subject of the people’s livelihood, and on ecological matters; and on the shape of its industry, the adoption of new technologies, and recognition of a coming shift in the balance of manufacturing and service sectorsThe book highlights the fact that China’s progress to date has not been in any way accidental, but has been the outcome of planned process, dating back to the late 1970s and the beginning of reform and opening up. Recognising that continued double-digit growth will not be sustainable going forward, the CPC has formulated plans to shape and adjust the systems needed to govern China in the new conditions; goals such as doubling the size of the economy from 2000 to 2020 remain in place as do other themes that run throughout the text; for example, furthering socialism with Chinese characteristics, and achieving prosperity for all of the Chinese population. The book concludes that the overall forces of reform apply equally to the CPC itself, and considers how the party must always exercise strict self-governance to fit it for the task of governing China as it approaches the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party in 2021.

Table of ContentsEmpirischer Überblick und theoretische Perspektiven.- Politik und Macht in multinationalen Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Nachhaltigkeit und multinationale Unternehmen in Schwellenländern.- Globale Arbeitsbedingungen im Wandel.- Regionale Expansionsstrategien in Europa.- Schlussfolgerungen.

Book SynopsisThis book aims to tell the Abu Dhabi story in economic development, from its past dominance in oil to its economic vision for the future. More than being an exemplar of industrial restructuring and diversification from a resource-based to a 21st century knowledge-based economy and society, Abu Dhabi emphasises its cultural legacy and tradition as an environmental advocate for green and sustainable pathways. It has as many challenges as creative responses to show that its success is not by wealth alone. This case study unveils Abu Dhabi in particular and the rest of Arabic and GCC economic development in general. They have all attracted foreign investment and global business, typically as hydrocarbon-rich resource economies. Beyond that, the geoeconomics and geopolitics of the Middle East and North Africa, with or without the Arab Spring in 2011 is in and of itself, a rich region for multidisciplinary studies and research, not just for economics and business. With Qatar, Abu Dhabi boasts of one of the highest per capita income in the world; therein lies a reason to enquire about its success and pivotal role in the GCC and global contexts.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Transformation From Oil to Industrialisation; Non-Oil Knowledge-Based Economy Services; Enablers in Labour, Laws and Regulations; Abu Dhabi's Economic Development Model.

Book SynopsisThis multidisciplinary volume, the first of its kind, presents an account of China's contemporary transformation via one of its most important yet overlooked cities: Shenzhen, located just north of Hong Kong. In recent decades, Shenzhen has transformed from an experimental site for economic reform into a dominant city at the crossroads of the global economy. The first of China's special economic zones, Shenzhen is today a UNESCO City of Design and the hub of China's emerging technology industries. Bringing China studies into dialogue with urban studies, the contributors explore how the post-Mao Chinese appropriation of capitalist logic led to a dramatic remodeling of the Chinese city and collective life in China today. These essays show how urban villages and informal institutions enabled social transformation through cases of public health, labor, architecture, gender, politics, education, and more. Book SynopsisHow do contemporary generations come to terms with losses inflicted by imperialism, colonialism, and war that took place decades ago? How do descendants of perpetrators and victims establish new relations in today's globalized economy? With Inheritance of Loss, Yukiko Koga approaches these questions through the unique lens of inheritance, focusing on Northeast China, the former site of the Japanese Puppet State Manchukuo, where municipal governments now court Japanese as investors and tourists. As China transitions to a market-oriented society, this region is restoring long-neglected colonial-era structures to boost tourism and inviting former colonial industries to create special economic zones, while unexpectedly unearthing chemical weapons abandoned by the Japanese Imperial Army at the end of World War II. Yet in spite of the advantages of open access to civil organizations, it is estimated that eighty percent of people live in countries that do not allow unfettered access. Why have some countries disallow the formation of organizations as part of their economic and political system? The contributions to Organizations, Civil Society, and the Roots of Development seek to answer this question through an exploration of how developing nations throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, made the transition to allowing their citizens the right to form organizations. The transition, contributors show, was not an easy one. Neither political changes brought about by revolution nor subsequent economic growth led directly to open access. In fact, initial patter

Book SynopsisFor dozens of developing countries, the financial upheavals of the 1980s have set back economic development by a decade or more. Poverty in those countries have intensified as they struggle under the burden of an enormous external debt. In 1988, more than six years after the onset of the crisis, almost all the debtor countries were still unable to borrow in the international capital markets on normal terms. Moreover, the world financial system has been disrupted by the prospect of widespread defaults on those debts. Because of the urgency of the present crisis, and because similar crises have recurred intermittently for at least 175 years, it is important to understand the fundamental features of the international macroeconomy and global financial markets that have contributed to this repeated instability. Developing Country Debt and the World Economy contains nontechnical versions of papers prepared under the auspices of the project on developing country debt, sponsored by the Nationa

The University of Chicago Press Land Filled with Flies A Political Economy of the

Book SynopsisThe image of a pristine isolation has been almost as common in research on foragers as in the popular media. Land filled with Flies is a sustanined argument against such views. Wilmsen marshals an enormous quantity of historical, archival, archeological, ethnographic, and survey data on the Kalahari Zhu to show how far from the reality these images are, how they have their own historical provenance, how they have been analytically distorting, and how they have proven politically pernicious for living groups like the Zhu.Pauline Peters, Science[A] major work. . . . Anthropologists will, and should, use Wilmsen's meticulously detailed study to revise their early lectures in the introductory course, and no future study of African 'foragers' should ignore it.Parker Shipton, American AnthropologistAn impressive book. . . . The reader need only read the first few pages to judge both the quality and ambitiousness of the work. . . . Essential reading.David R. Penna, Africa Today
