Book SynopsisA guide for successful innovation planning. It is suitable for strategists, managers, designers, and researchers who undertake the challenge of innovation, despite a lack of established procedures and a high risk of failure.Trade Review"Design thinking is a method that can be applied to nearly any endeavor, business scenario, or social reform. In his book, 101 Design Methods, author Vijay Kumar describes how design methods can be applied as a science, rather than through art, through practical steps of observation, reframing, ideation, prototyping, and planning." Book SynopsisHow can we study and teach design in a way that is participatory and socially engaged? In this timely book, Danah Abdulla challenges us to imagine a design education and design culture that moves beyond Eurocentric and neoliberal frameworks. Drawing on learnings from work with design students, educators and designers in the Arab region, with a particular focus on Jordan and featuring examples from Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, Abdulla creates a dialogue with who have most at stake in education to imagine how we can develop a collaborative, contextually-based, and socially-relevant design education. By first contextualising higher education and design education in the region and examining the issues and challenges that are pertinent to the development of curricula and pedagogy, such as power, bureaucracy, language, and access, Danah Abdulla considers the purpose and relevance of design education in contemporary post-colonial societies. She explores regional iden

Book SynopsisRecently, there have been a number of advances in technology, including in mobile devices, globalization of companies, display technologies and healthcare, all of which require significant input and evaluation from human factors specialists. Accordingly, this textbook has been completely updated, with some chapters folded into other chapters and new chapters added where needed. The text continues to fill the need for a textbook that bridges the gap between the conceptual and empirical foundations of the field.Trade Review"The book materials have been updated to take the technological changes over the last decade into account for more clearly and comprehensively explaining the foundation of human factors and ergonomics in simple and complex systems. As such, this book provides students with more temporal examples of the applications and issues of human factors in the design, implementation, and evaluation of products and systems. The authors’ aim of providing a foundation in the principles of human performance and a broad overview of the field of human factors for advanced undergraduate and graduate students is successfully reached."—Alan Chang, City University of Hong Kong"Proctor and Van Zandt are polymaths who’ve written a rigorous and practical introduction to human factors. Early chapters survey the field’s history and systems of thought. Later chapters cover the principles of cognitive, physical, and organizational ergonomics, and the real-world practice of human factors engineering. The book's multidisciplinary attitude means that students from any academic background will find something novel and stimulating in the material, and that all will take away a thorough knowledge of human factors and ergonomics."— Jason McCarley, Oregon State University, USAThis book is very comprehensive, and it is a great resource for human factors practitioners. I applaud Proctor and VanZandt for revising this new edition as it addresses how new technologies have affected the way we work and the ways in which technology both affects us and the type of work being conducted."—Heather C. Monacelli Press Mod New York: Fashion Takes a Trip

Book SynopsisAn overview of the turbulent 1960s and 1970s through the lens of fashion, a period when demure silhouettes and pastels exploded into bold prints and tie-dyed psychedelic chaos and ultimately resolved into a personal style dubbed by Vogue the "New Nonchalance." Mod New York traces the fashion arc of the 1960s and 1970s, a tumultuous and innovative era that continues to inspire how we dress today. During this period, demure silhouettes and pastels favored by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy exploded into bold prints and tie-dyed psychedelic chaos and ultimately resolved into a personal style dubbed by Vogue the “New Nonchalance.” Accompanying a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, this book is beautifully illustrated by two hundred groundbreaking and historically significant designs by Halston, Geoffrey Beene, Rudi Gernreich, Yves Saint Laurent, Andre Courreges, Norman Norell, and Bill Blass, among many others, all drawn from the renowned costume collection at MCNY. By the mid-1960s, clothing assumed communicative powers, reflecting the momentous societal changes of the day: the emergence of a counterculture, the women’s liberation movement, the rise of African-American consciousness, and the radicalism arising from the protests of the Vietnam War. New York City, as the nation’s fashion and creative capital, became the critical flashpoint for these debates. Authoritative essays by well-known fashion historians Phyllis Magidson, Hazel Clark, Sarah Gordon, and Caroline Rennolds Milbank explore the ways in which these radical movements were expressed in fashion. Of special note is Kwame S. Brathwaite’s presentation of the Grandassa Models and “Black is Beautiful” movement, which is illustrated with photographs by his father, Kwame Brathwaite.Trade Review"In the 1960s, the fashion world turned "topsy-turvy," as TIME noted in 1967. Nearly every aspect of that revolutionary decade, from the civil-rights movement to the space race, was somehow reflected in the clothing worn by American women. The book Mod New York: Fashion Takes a Trip... takes a look at the influences behind and lasting influence of American fashion in the years between 1960 and 1973." - Time.com "This catalog of an exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY), edited by its curators, is comprised of eight essays taking various angles on American fashion in the 1960s to early 1970s, amply illustrated with images of garments from MCNY's collection alongside vintage photos from Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.... This accessible work stands out by contextualizing fashion alongside major social change - the Youthquake, birth control, the civil rights movement, and Vietnam War protests." - Library Journal "A fascinating look at a crucial shift in American fashion." - Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis"Offering an alternative, female–focused history, Women in Design is an essential new tome dedicated to the innovators who have shaped the design world" – ELLE DecorationFeaturing more than 100 profiles of pioneering women designers, some who have achieved global recognition such as Ray Eames, Charlotte Perriand and Zaha Hadid, it also introduces the fascinating and often untold stories of lesser–known designers, who have similarly shaped and enriched the story of design. An excerpt from the book:"This book is, first and foremost, a celebration of some truly remarkable women whose careers in design have been exceptional. They can rightly be called exceptional because, despite the odds stacked against them, the women featured here created significant bodies of work within what was – and to a certain extent still is – the male–dominated field of design. By highlighting their extraordinary achievements, our intention is to contextualize the role of women in design over the last one hundred years or so in order to trace how the status of female designers has evolved, while at the same time assessing where it stands today. In the past, all too often the work of female designers was overlooked in the literature on design, while also being woefully under–represented in exhibitions and museum collections. This book seeks to redress these outstanding omissions. The primary reasons for this paucity of representation are that – as in other male–dominated professions – women were often either largely excluded from certain areas of endeavour or had no option but to take on subordinate roles. Women designers and their work have, also, all too often been assessed through the lens of the patriarchy, meaning they have either been entirely defined by their gender or their contributions have been subsumed under that of their ''more famous'' husbands, brothers, fathers or lovers. This book attempts to tell a very different story, one that appraises their activities within the wider landscape of the feminist movement – both past and present. It is only now that women designers working in developed free–market economies are beginning to enjoy anything like equality with their male counterparts when it comes to professional access and recognition, let alone parity of remuneration. As for women living elsewhere in the world, having any kind of professional career, let alone one in design, is still often largely an impossible dream."

Book SynopsisThe twentieth century offered up countless visions of domestic life, from the aspirational to the radical. Whether it was the dream of the fully mechanised home or the notion that technology might free us from home altogether, the domestic realm was a site of endless invention and speculation. But what happened to those visions? Are the smart homes of today the future that architects and designers once predicted, or has ‘home’ proved resistant to radical change? Home Futures: Living in Yesterday’s Tomorrow –accompanying a major Design Museum exhibition of the same title–explores a number of different attitudes toward domestic life, tracing the social and technological developments that have driven change in the home. It proposes that we are already living in yesterday’s tomorrow, just not in the way anyone predicted. This book begins with a lavishly illustrated catalogue portraying the ‘home futures’ of the twentieth century and beyond, from the work of Ettore Sottsass and Joe Colombo to Google’s recent forays into the smart home. The catalogue is followed by a reader consisting of newly commissioned essays by writers such as Dan Hill and Justin McGuirk, which explore the changes in the domestic realm in relation to space, technology, society, economy and psychology.

Book SynopsisSurrealism was one of the most influential cultural movements of the twentieth century. Subverting the dogmas of modernism and rationalism in art and literature, it also had a profound impact on the world of design. From Dalí’s Mae West Lips sofa to Schiaparelli’s ‘shocking pink’ haute couture, Surrealism championed the power of the unconscious, of dreams and hidden desires – and liberated design from convention and functionalism. Published to accompany the exhibition Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924 – Today, this book celebrates Surrealism’s enduring legacy. It features groundbreaking fashion by Mary Katrantzou and Dior, as well as British artists and designers, including Tim Walker, Jonathan Trayte and Vince Fraser. Alongside essays by leading experts, such as Ghislaine Wood and Alyce Mahon, are interviews with practitioners who are carrying the torch of Surrealism today, including Viviane Sassen, Dunne & Raby and the Campana Brothers. The book concludes with a glimpse into some of the recent forms of art and resistance the movement has inspired, such as Afro-Surrealism, as well as the surprising connections between Surrealist thinking and one of the most contentious technological developments of our time: artificial intelligence. Book SynopsisA *New* Program for Graphic Design is the first Communication Design textbook expressly of and for the 21st century. Synthesizing the pragmatic with the experimental, this volume builds upon mid- to late-20th-century pedagogical models to convey advanced principles of contemporary design in an understandable form for students of all levels. David Reinfurt, a graphic designer, writer, educator and one half of design collaboration Dexter Sinister, has developed a graphic design curriculum at Princeton University in which three courses provide a broad and comprehensive introduction to the field for undergraduate students coming from a range of other disciplines. These courses Typography, Gestalt and Interface are the foundation of this book. Through a series of in-depth historical case studies (from Benjamin Franklin to the Macintosh computer) and assignments that progressively build in complexity, A *New* Program for Graphic Design serves as a practical guide for designers looking to understand and shape the increasingly networked world of information and design. As a cofounder of O-R-G inc. (2000), Dexter Sinister (2006) and The Serving Library (2012), graphic designer and teacher David Reinfurt (born 1971) has been involved in several studios and collectives that have reimagined graphic design, publishing and archiving in the 21st century. His work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, but can also be accessed on a daily basis: he was the lead designer for the New York City MTA Metrocard vending machine interface, still in use today. Reinfurt teaches at Princeton University.Trade ReviewNot your typical textbook, A *New* Program for Graphic Design is a sleek, no-frills volume designed like a stack of notes from the course you never took (but should have) and written in casual, everyday language. -- Maya P Lim * Creative Pro *...In viewing design as a liberal art — as a discipline that bridges disciplines, as skills that can help anyone, designer or not, make sense of this increasingly visual world — Reinfurt shows the value of design is not simply in the crafting of images, but in helping us see and read them." -- Jarrett Fuller * Jarret Fuller *David Reinfurt‘s new book provides … in depth access to a historical analysis, exquisite close-focus portraits of multi-talented creative makers past and present, alongside his own research and examples of his class assignments. This intelligent book contains new insights regarding graphic design history, thought, and practice. This book is a reminder of Walt Whitman’s call for "a force infusion of intellect" to confront the future. -- Sheila Levrant De Bretteville * Director, Yale University Graduate Program in Graphic Design *At a moment of tremendous technological and cultural change, David Reinfurt makes the case that graphic design is not merely a craft, but a fundamental way to understand and engage with the world. Discursive, expansive, and inspiring, this book redefines its subject and provides an indispensable guide to how it might be practiced. -- Michael Bierut * Partner, Pentagram New York *

Book SynopsisDesigning Peace asks, how might we collectively put our creative forces together to envision a future we want to live in and take action to create it now? This book is an intersectional snapshot of the actions—culturally diverse and wide-ranging in scale—that are currently in play around the world. Offering perspectives on peace through essays, interviews, critical maps, project profiles, data visualizations, and art, this book conveys the momentum that design can gain in effecting a peace-filled future. From activists, scholars, and architects to policymakers, graphic, game, and landcape designers, Desiging Peace flips the conversation: peace is not simply a passive state signifying the absence of war, it is a dynamic concept that requires effort, expertise, and multi-dimensional solutions to address its complexity. Designers engage with individuals, communities, and organizations to create a more sustainable peace—from creative confrontations that challenge existing structures, to designs that demand embracing justice and truth in a search for reconciliation. Schlotterbeck, Martin Tironi, Rita Torres, Camilo Trumper and Peter Winn. From 1970 to 1973 Chile carried out on a political experiment in which socialist change would occur peacefully and with respect for existing democratic institutions. This “Chilean road to socialism,” as it was often called, offered a unique political third way at the height of the Cold War – one that broke from the opposing models put forth by the United States and the Soviet Union. This short and abruptly ended period in Chilean history resulted in product and communication design that powerfully demonstrates how design can influence social behavior and identity and foster solidarity and cohesion. How to Design a Revolution documents this Chilean visual language born out of exceptional circum- stances. The publication broadens the study of influential and consequential visual languages of the social (protest) movements of the1960s and1970s, such as the Cuban Revolution, the Vietnam War and May 68, and illustrates how design came to reflect the dynamics of this political moment while also becoming a tool for political change.

Book SynopsisThe incessant trend to throw away rather than to repair, demolish rather than refurbish has been a topic of discussion and criticism for years—at the same time, resource consumption and the waste continue to increase. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing sustainable and imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects aim to further develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This publication presents a wide variety of approaches and projects, complemented by essays by notable personalities from the fields of architecture, preservation, materials science, design, manufacturing, and craftsmanship.

Book SynopsisHello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine investigates how robotics is increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives. The exhibition shows that design in its traditional function as a mediator is indispensable if robots are to become a visible reality and not just remain hidden in washing machines, cars and cash machines. The catalogue points out where we already encounter these intelligent machines and where we may come across them in the near future: in the industry, in the military and in everyday settings; at nurseries and retirement homes; in our bodies and in the cloud; when shopping and having sex; in video games and, of course, in film and literature. In a series of in-depth essays and interviews, experts such as science-fiction author Bruce Sterling or the design duo Dunne & Raby explore the question of how we deal with an environment that is rapidly becoming more digital, smarter and more autonomous. They highlight our often ambivalent relationship to new technologies and discuss the opportunities and challenges that present themselves to us as individuals and as a society in this context. In this regard, Hello, Robot. broadens the scope of the discussion to include the ethical and political questions with which we are faced today in the light of technological advances in robotics, while confronting us with the contradictions that are often found in the answers to these questions. Authors and interviewees: Bruce Sterling, Fiona Raby, Anthony Dunne, Gesche Joost, Carlo Ratti, Amelie Klein and others.
