Springer Nature Switzerland AG Design Commons: Practices, Processes and
Book SynopsisThis book directly links the notion of the commons with different design praxes, and explores their social, cultural, and ecological ramifications. It draws out material conditions in four areas of design interest: social design, commons and culture, ecology and transdisciplinary design. As a collection of positions, the diversity of arguments advances the understanding of the commons as both concepts and modes of thinking, and their material translation when contextualised in the domain of design questions. In other words, it moves abstract social science concepts towards concrete design debates. This text appeals to students, researchers and practitioners working on design in architecture, architecture theory, urbanism, and ecology. Table of Contents1. Springer International Publishing AG Creativity in Art, Design and Technology
Book SynopsisThis is an open access book.Creativity is a difficult concept, how can it best be defined, understood, applied, and practiced? This book provides important answers to these questions. Technology can enable artists to be more creative. Scientific and artistic thinking give us two complementary tools to understand the complexity of the world, with science reducing subjective experience to essential principles and art intensifying and expanding our experiences. These examples also show how artists can push the boundaries of technology into exciting new realms that have not been explored before. The impact that art and art practice can have on culture, society, and social responsibility is explored in detail through examples and case studies. In addition, the book presents how artists are creating and reflecting cultural and societal resonance in their work. Can other disciplines help artists to be more creative? All are part of an interrelated wider society and enables artists to develop artwork fit for highly interfaced and conceptually broad contemporary contexts. This is illustrated with examples which show exciting and challenging results. Creativity in Art, Design and Technology is relevant for artists, designers, scientists and technologists. All can benefit in a major way from a greater understanding of creativity, and the ways in which mutual interaction and collaboration enables all areas to develop. The potential for the future is immense and this book signposts the way forward. Trade Review“The book is an easy read, no math or complex computer concepts, but full of inspiring and thought-provoking ideas and questions. The book does an excellent job in explaining how creativity and imagination can benefit design and implementation. … The artwork in the book is delightful, surprising, and even inspiring.” (Jon Peddie, Jon Peddie Research, jonpeddie.com, March 31, 2023)Table of ContentsPreface.- Acknowledgments.- About the Authors.- 1 Introduction.- 2 Creativity in the Arts: Traditional and New Media.- 3 Creativity and Artist Technologist.- 4 Creativity and Virtual Worlds.- 5 The Creative Process and Social Responsibility.- 6 Digital Communication as a Creative Tool.- 7 Artificial Intelligence and Creativity.- 8 Art Thinking and Design Thinking.- 9 Time and Temporality: Creative Reception and Repetition.- 10 How can Art assist Science and Technology?.- 11 Research and Development in Creativity.- 12 Epilog

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Screw Compressors: Mathematical Modelling and Performance Calculation
Book SynopsisAlthoughtheprinciplesofoperationofhelicalscrewmachines, ascompressors or expanders, have been well known for more than 100 years, it is only during the past 30 years that these machines have become widely used. The main reasons for the long period before they were adopted were their relatively poor e?ciency and the high cost of manufacturing their rotors. Two main developments led to a solution to these di?culties. The ?rst of these was the introduction of the asymmetric rotor pro?le in 1973. This reduced the bl- hole area, which was the main source of internal leakage by approximately 90%, and thereby raised the thermodynamic e?ciency of these machines, to roughly the same level as that of traditional reciprocating compressors. The second was the introduction of precise thread milling machine tools at - proximately the same time. This made it possible to manufacture items of complex shape, such as the rotors, both accurately and cheaply. From then on, as a result of their ever improving e?ciencies, high rel- bility and compact form, screw compressors have taken an increasing share of the compressor market, especially in the ?elds of compressed air production, and refrigeration and air conditioning, and today, a substantial proportion of compressors manufactured for industry are of this type. Despite, the now wide usage of screw compressors and the publication of many scienti?c papers on their development, only a handful of textbooks have been published to date, which give a rigorous exposition of the principles of their operation and none of these are in English.Table of ContentsScrew Compressor Geometry.- Calculation of Screw Compressor Performance.- Principles of Screw Compressor Design.- Examples of Modern Screw Compressor Designs.- Conclusions.

Editorial Tenov S.L. Legible - Visible: Between the Film Frame and the
Book SynopsisLegible-Visible explores the relationship between print publications and audiovisual documents, two of the most important media in the social and cultural landscape of our time--and two forms that also define the evolution of contemporary art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Mela Davila and Maite Munoz here show how the arrival of inexpensive home video technologies in the 1970s and then of digital media at the turn of the millennium sparked revolutions in the creation and diffusion of both video artworks and artists' publications. Davila proposes a theoretical and historical framework for works long dismissed by the market because of their serial nature, while Munoz shows how artists have taken advantage of the permeability between publications and audiovisual elements. The first book-length work to study artists' publications and video in relation to each other, Legible-Visible will enable new ways of thinking about a number of contemporary artists and their work.

Book SynopsisCybernetic-Existentialism: Freedom, Systems, and Being-for-Others in Contemporary Arts and Performance offers a unique discourse and an original aesthetic theory. It argues that fusing perspectives from the philosophy of Existentialism with insights from the universal science' of cybernetics provides a new analytical lens and deconstructive methodology to critique art. In this study, Steve Dixon examines how a range of artists' works reveal the ideas of Existentialist philosophers including Kierkegaard, Camus, de Beauvoir, and Sartre on freedom, being and nothingness, eternal recurrence, the absurd, and being-for-others. Simultaneously, these artworks are shown to engage in complex explorations of concepts proposed by cyberneticians including Wiener, Shannon, and Bateson on information theory and noise', feedback loops, circularity, adaptive ecosystems, autopoiesis, and emergence. Dixon's groundbreaking book demonstrates how fusing insights and knowledTable of Contents1. Introduction: Cybernetics and Existentialism in Arts and Popular Culture; 2. Taylor & Francis Ltd Ecologies Design
Book SynopsisThe notion of ecology has become central to contemporary design discourse. This reflects contemporary concerns for our planet and a new understanding of the primary entanglement of the human species with the rest of the world. The use of the term ecology' with design tends to refer to how to integrate ecologies into design and cities and be understood in a biologically-scientific and technical sense. In practice, this scientific-technical knowledge tends to be only loosely employed. The notion of ecology is also often used metaphorically in relation to the social use of space and cities. This book argues that what it calls the biological' and social' senses of ecology are both important and require distinctly different types of knowledge and practice. It proposes that science needs to be taken much more seriously in biological ecologies', and that social ecologies' can now be understood non-metaphorically as assemblages. Furthermore, this book argues that design practice itseTable of Contents1. Introduction: Towards an ecologies design practiceSection 1: Biological Ecologies Design and Regeneration2.
