  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Tweed

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe story of tweed is tied to a series of social, economic and cultural shifts that have molded its development. This book considers the historical factors that helped to shape the design characteristics and social meanings of the group of fabrics that we call tweed, from their emergence in the 1820s to the present day. Including significant new research on tweeds, from Harris Tweed to the type used by Chanel, this book follows the history of these fabrics from the raw fiber to the finished garment in men’s and women’s fashion. Exploring rural and urban contexts, this book reveals the important physical and conceptual relationships of tweed with landscape. Anderson shows that, contrary to their strong popular associations with tradition, tweeds emerged in the Romantic era as a response to the dramatic changes associated with industrialization and urbanization. Progressive changes in gender relations are also explored as a major factor in tweed's evolution, from associations with particular ideals of masculinity into what is now a truly adaptable fashion textile worn by both sexes. This is the first book of its kind to recognize the importance of tweed to fashion innovation today.Trade ReviewFor textile history enthusiasts, or weavers of tweed yardage pondering the background to the iconic cloth ... this book will be if great interest ... By the final chapters you will have gained a fascinating insight into this industry. * The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *Anderson’s excellent book Tweed offers a detailed examination of the history of tweed as both fabric and garment. In so doing she unpacks some of the wideranging social and cultural themes that are hinted at in the exchange between Lord Peter Wimsey and his manservant Bunter ... an excellent overview of a complex subject, demonstrating the value of placing one fabric at the centre of a rich multi-disciplinary enquiry. * Journal of Design History *This book provides a model of how to write a biography of a fabric, which through developing so many unexpected links and thought-provoking digressions leaves the reader with an entirely new perspective on the subject. * Costume *Tweed delivers coherent and precise conclusions that are testament to the thorough research that it contains ... an excellent and much–needed introduction to the topic that lays a strong foundation for other channels of research and interrogation of this fascinating textile. * Journal of Dress History *The scope and quality of the research within Tweed is excellent. The author provides a nuanced account of this universally recognized but often misunderstood and under-researched textile, and firmly situates it within the context of broader economic, social and cultural histories. -- Mairi MacKenzie, Research Fellow, Fashion and Textiles, School of Design, The Glasgow School of Art, UKExpansive and detailed, Fiona Anderson's Tweed offers a rigorous history of this important textile. Drawing on new research, it challenges the myths and sets its subject within its technical, cultural, and aesthetic contexts, pulling together questions of production, consumption and reception in a complex and satisfying weave of ideas. -- Professor Christopher Breward, Principal of Edinburgh College of Art, UK.From its beginnings in coarse woolen shepherd's checks to its global success in luxury markets, Fiona Anderson digs deep into the life of tweed – its history, myths, meanings, design, technical characteristics, and consumption. The study considers tweed from a broad perspective of innovation and fashion change, aided largely by a material culture approach. The relationship of tweed to class, gender, national identities and traditions, is part of the story. Readers will want to know more about these timeless fabrics that have romantic (and other) meanings long before they are fashioned into clothes. -- Patricia A. Cunningham, The Ohio State University, USAReaders interested in the history of textiles will be intrigued to learn about the relationship of tweed to the artistic Romantic movement—which butted against industrialism and urbanism—and how this rural fabric became associated with idealized imperialism, travel, and foreign exoticism. -- B. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Beautiful Thing: An Introduction to Design

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBeautiful Thing presents a broad introduction to design theory and practice. Historical, contextual, philosophical, technical, visual, and practical approaches to Design are often presented separately. But each approach impacts on others and together they are critical to a rounded understanding of design. Beautiful Thing presents a clear synthesis of these approaches, explaining all the basic concepts and allowing the reader to connect the different elements of Design. Both lively and accessible, the book takes the reader step by step through the key topics of taste, design evolution, composition, colour, drawing, communication and expression. Superbly illustrated, the book includes a range of detailed design case studies. In addition, theory boxes summarise necessary but complex ideas. A Glossary and Guides to Further Reading are also included. The book will be invaluable as a broad introduction for students of all branches of Design.Trade ReviewThe beauty of design is that there is more to it than meets the eye. Everyday objects and items have rich stories, meanings and considerations behind them. Beautiful Thing is a brilliant introduction to Design for any student studying design or a related area, or a teaching aid for design academics. It also lends itself well for wider audiences to learn about design practice, ranging from architecture to products and graphics. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Scandinavian Design: Alternative Histories

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisScandinavian design is still seen as democratic, functional and simple, its products exemplifying the same characteristics now as they have done since the 1950s. But both the essence and the history of Scandinavian design are much more complex than this. Scandinavian Design: Alternative Histories presents a radically new assessment, a corrective to the persistent mythologies and reductive accounts of Scandinavian design. The book brings together case studies from the early twentieth century to today. Drawn from fields as diverse as transport, engineering, packaging, photography, law, interiors, and corporate identity, these studies tell new or unfamiliar stories about the production, mediation and consumption of design. An alternative history is created, one much more alive to national and regional differences and to types of product.Scandinavian Design analyses a century of design culture from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden and, in so doing, presents a sophisticated introduction to Scandinavian design.Trade ReviewMost 20th-century accounts of Scandinavian design have depended on clichéd descriptors such as 'humane', 'democratic', 'organic' and 'blond'. The authors of the twelve highly stimulating essays in this new anthology on the subject, skilfully assembled by design historian Kjetil Fallan, overtly reject those tired terms and, instead, offer 21st-century readers a reinvigorated account that is richer, more diverse and, most importantly, more analytical and scholarly. The book brings together new information, new approaches and a new set of narratives that make us look again at the idea of Scandinavian design. These alternative histories challenge existing orthodoxies and, as such, are guaranteed to become key design historical texts of the 21st century. * Professor Penny Sparke, Kingston University, London *This landmark book nudges our understanding of Scandinavian design beyond IKEA and Hans Wegner's teak chairs. Heralded for some time, the subject has, until now, offered a frustratingly limited selection of literature in English. From the Reverse Vending Machine's 'Hole in the Wall' to Oslo's streamlined 'Goldfish' trams, design stars like Jacob Jensen to the Swedish Cooperative Union's plastic grocery bags and 'graffiti board', Scandinavian Design covers material that will appeal to casual readers. But its smart, knowledgeable essays make this book a first stop for anyone interested in the full story of Scandinavian design. * Elizabeth Guffey, Purchase College State University of New York *Table of ContentsIntroduction, Kjetil Fallan, University of Oslo, Norway 1. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Writing Design: Words and Objects

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do we learn about the objects that surround us? As well as gathering sensory information by viewing and using objects, we also learn about objects through the written and spoken word - from shop labels to friends' recommendations and from magazines to patents. But, even as design commentators have become increasingly preoccupied with issues of mediation, the intersection of design and language remains under-explored.Writing Design provides a unique examination of what is at stake when we convert the material properties of designed goods into verbal or textual description. Issues discussed include the role of text in informing design consumption, designing with and through language, and the challenges and opportunities raised by design without language. Bringing together a wide range of scholars and practitioners, Writing Design reveals the difficulties, ethics and politics of writing about design.Trade ReviewWriting Design is long overdue. For well over a century, critics, historians, theorists and designers themselves have used a multitude of words to describe, suggest, denote, evoke and critique that evasive concept of 'design'. Now, for the first time, a group of scholars have set out to reflect on that long-standing practice and to make us think more deeply about the complex relationship that exists between words and things. * Professor Penny Sparke, Kingston University, London, UK *This volume promises to become essential reading for anyone interested in the historical and contemporary circumstances by which words describe design, and design defines language. From a range of international perspectives, the book's contributors show how the interrelationship between language and design is never passive, but always subject to mediation, negotiation, and at times contestation. * Jeremy Aynsley, Professor of History of Design, Royal College of Art, UK *Writing Design will be a pivotal book on the fast-filling Design Criticism bookshelf. Design Criticism manifests variously as a journalistic practice, a mode of political resistance, a literary genre, an interpretive tool - and now as an academic discipline. The growing number of pedagogical initiatives in Design Criticism demands a literature that supports and challenges these academic endeavours with new research, provocative thinking and thoughtful analysis. Writing Design collects important scholarship - representing a spectrum of approaches, viewpoints, and geographical origins - that explores the rich relationship between design and language and draws attention to the written word as an artefact, worthy of as much scrutiny as the designed entity it describes. As such, this carefully selected compendium of essays helps to stake out the territory, and provides students with a broad view of the field, its key debates, themes and issues, as well as with inspiration for their own research, and case studies for close analysis. I look forward to the Design Criticism bookshelf soon groaning under the weight of many more anthologies, theoretical treatises, narrative histories and polemical tracts of the same calibre as this pioneering volume. * Alice Twemlow, Chair, MFA Design Criticism Department School of Visual Arts, USA *Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsGeneral Introduction, Grace Lees-MaffeiPART 1: RIGHTING DESIGN - ON THE REFORMING ROLE OF DESIGN CRITICISMIntroduction1. ‘Writing about Stuff': The Peril and Promise of Design History and Criticism, Jeffrey L. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Material Memories: Design and Evocation

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the way that objects 'speak' to us through the memories that we associate with them. Instead of viewing the meaning of particular designs as fixed and given, by looking at the process of evocation it finds an open and continuing dialogue between things, their makers and their consumers. This is not, however, to diminish the role of design in shapinghuman consciousness. The contributors do not view objects as blank carriers onto which humans project prior psychic dramas, but rather, place crucial importance on the precise materials from which they are made, their social, economic and historic reasons for being, and the way that we interact with them through our senses. This book therefore studies the physical withinthe intellectual, directly testing the concept of material culture. With telling illustrations, and spanning the Renaissance to the present day, leading scholars converge across disciplines to explore the souvenir-value of jewellery, textiles, the home, the urban space, modernist design, photography, the museum and even the sunken wreck. Together they show howthe sense of the past and of history, far from being a 'radical illusion' as some post-modernists claim, has been a deeply felt reality.Trade Review'Deftly combines the study of memory with material culture, enhancing our understanding of both. The book opens up a new field of research. Its combination of history and theory, and its emphasis on the tactile and tangible components of memory clearly signal the future direction of scholarship about how we use objects to give continuity and meaning to human experience.'Professor John Brewer, University of Chicago'A triumph of intellectual choreography ... sets the mind spinning.' Design History Society Newsletter'All the chapters make excellent reading, well researched, always stimulating, often most entertaining, with relevant and moving photographic illustrations. The bibliographic references and the detailed index greatly facilitate its use.' 'Material Memories' will certainly occupy a central place in the growing literature on material culture, as it bridges history, anthropology and art studies.'Journal of Design History'Focusing on the concept of the souve

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Design for Sustainable Change: How Design and Designers Can Drive the Sustainability Agenda

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDesign for Sustainable Change explores how design thinking and design-led entrepreneurship can address the issue of sustainability. It discusses the ways in which design thinking is evolving and being applied to a much wider spectrum of social and environmental issues, beyond its traditional professional territory. The result is designers themselves evolving, and developing greater design mindfulness in relation to what they do and how they do it. This book looks at design thinking as a methodology which, by its nature, considers issues of sustainability, but which does not necessarily seek to define itself in those terms. It explores the gradual extension of this methodology into the larger marketplace and the commercial and social implications of such an extension.Trade ReviewAn invaluable reference guide to the major ethical design themes of our time. With its lively format and succinct overview of concepts, ideas and case studies, this book is essential reading for anyone wishing to grasp the complexities of sustainability and the role of design. * Stuart Walker, Professor of Design, Lancaster University, UK; author of Sustainable by Design: Explorations in Theory and Practice. *Design is undergoing a revolution, and this book is an essential guide for tomorrow's design revolutionaries. Design thinking, service design and design activism are among the new ideas that are transforming the processes and practices of design today. Students of design require a clear guide through these radical new territories of creative practice to help them develop sustainable futures - for themselves and for the world they live in. This extremely timely book is essential reading for design students in all disciplines. * Professor Mike Press, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design University of Dundee, Scotland *This book helps designers of all persuasions to re-imagine their own design futures. It suggests that this re-orientation involves fresh ways of perceiving, thinking and practicing. It believes that design for sustainable change helps everyone to re-pattern their behaviour towards more sustainable ways of living. Importantly, it adds another significant step in the negotiation of Design's own transitional journey. * Alastair Fuad-Luke, design educator, enabler, writer & activist; author of The Eco-design Handbook and Design Activism *This well-researched, clearly written book is refreshingly to the point. Using a wide range of pertinent and up-to-date case studies it guides the reader to see design as an ethical, considered practice for the benefit of all rather than a consumer driven indulgence. This book will prove particularly vital reading for those who are carefully picking their way through the plethora of different perspectives the world of design presents. * Dr Paul Atkinson, Reader in Design, Sheffield Hallam University, UK *Design for Sustainable Change is timely, clear and compelling. It's the ideal roadmap for any designer seeking an alternative to business as usual. * John Thackara, Doors of Perception *Students in all the design professions should read this admirable and wise book by Chick and Micklethwaite ... it is a fascinating explication of the philosophy of design that offers a vision of how designers should think and work and what design should be ... The accompanying case studies, a fascinating collection of local, national, and global solutions, show how design can address ecological and social problems ... This beautiful book is superbly illustrated. * Choice review, R. M. Labuz, Mohawk Valley Community College, USA *Chick and Micklethwaite do an excellent job of explaining issues surrounding design and sustainability. Although the book is geared toward professional and aspiring designers, anyone with a curiosity for design and sustainability will find this book fascinating. -- Tina Chan * Art Libraries Society of North America *For anyone wanting a clear overview of the different approaches that designers might take toward a more sustainable future, this is a must read. * Guy Julier, University of Brighton, UK *This book is an excellent general overview of how the global ecological crisis impacts the nature of design. * Louise St Pierre, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Canada *This is a good compilation of material ... a readable introduction to this subject for architectural and design students. * John Napier, University of Lincoln, UK *This is a great book for demystifying some of the woolly topics surrounding sustainability. The book is well written and the authors tackle some big themes within the text, yet these these topics are succinctly explained in manageable chunks along with numerous case studies, each of which are clearly explained. As such it makes it an ideal undergraduate text. The chapter on Design Thinking and collaborative approaches to design is particularly interesting and relevant to a new generation designers. * Tim Bones, K College, UK *Table of ContentsContents. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book describes methods for research on and research through design. It posits that ethnography is an appropriate method for design research because it constantly orients itself, like design projects, towards social realities. In research processes, designers acquire project-specific knowledge, which happens mostly intuitively in practice. When this knowledge becomes the subject of reflection and explication, it strengthens the discipline of design and makes it more open to interdisciplinary dialogue. Through the use of the ethnographic method in design, this book shows how design researchers can question the certainties of the everyday world, deconstruct reality into singular aesthetic and semantic phenomena, and reconfigure them into new contexts of signification. It shows that design ethnography is a process in which the epistemic and creative elements flow into one another in iterative loops. The goal of design ethnography is not to colonize the discipline of design with a positivist and objectivist scientific ethos, but rather to reinforce and reflect upon the explorative and searching methods that are inherent to it. This innovative book is of interest to design researchers and professionals, including graphic artists, ethnographers, visual anthropologists and others involved with creative arts/media. Book SynopsisOtl Aicher's writings are explorations of the world, a substantive part of his work. In moving through the history of thought and design, building and construction, he assures us of the possibilities of arranging existence in a humane fashion. As ever he is concerned with the question of the conditions needed to produce a civilised culture. These conditions have to be fought for against apparent factual or material constraints and spiritual and intellectual substitutes on offer. Otl Aicher likes a dispute. For this reason, the volume contains polemical statements on cultural and political subjects as well as practical reports and historical exposition. He fights with productive obstinacy, above all for the renewal of Modernism, which he claims has largely exhausted itself in aesthetic visions; he insists the ordinary working day is still more important than the "cultural Sunday". Book SynopsisListening to, buying and sharing music is an immensely important part of everyday life. Yet recent technological developments are increasingly changing how we use and consume music. This book collects together the most recent studies of music consumption, and new developments in music technology. It combines the perspectives of both social scientists and technology designers, uncovering how new music technologies are actually being used, along with discussions of new music technologies still in development. With a specific focus on the social nature of music, the book breaks new ground in bringing together discussions of both the social and technological aspects of music use. Chapters cover topics such as the use of the iPod, music technologies which encourage social interaction in public places, and music sharing on the internet. A valuable collection for anyone concerned with the future of music technology, this book will be of particular interest to those designing new music technologies, those working in the music industry, along with students of music and new technology. Trade Review"A highly original and stimulating collection of contributions addressing aspects of our everyday music experiences in the modern world. The picture it paints of music as highly social and collaborative, yet deeply personal, is a rich and complex one which advances thinking about the many functions music plays in our lives. It is often the case that new ideas and exciting developments emerge at the boundaries between existing disciplines and bodies of knowledge, and in this text the editors have succeeded in bringing together work from music, technical and social science backgrounds to point out possibilities for researchers at these boundaries as they can be applied to a fast moving and exciting area of knowledge".(Prof. Dorothy Miell, (Open University) and Associate Dean (Curriculum ad Awards), Social Sciences Faculty)Table of ContentsConsuming Music Together: Introduction and Overview.- Music and Emotion in Real Time.- Sharing Music.- Sharing and Listening to Music.- Social Practices Around Itunes.- Choosing Music.- Distributing the Process of Music Choice in Public Spaces.- Promoting Social Interaction in Public Spaces: The Flytrap Active Environment.- Mobile Music.- Investigating the Culture of Mobile Listening: From Walkman to iPod.- Tuna: Socialising Music Sharing on the Move.- Car Drivers Using Sound Pryer - Joint Music Listening in Traffic Encounters.- Music and Dance.- Digital Dance Hall: The Fan Culture of Dance Simulation Arcade Games.- “Sort Drugs Make Mates”: The Use and Meaning of Mobiles in Dance Music Club Culture.- hpDJ: An Automated DJ with Floorshow Feedback.- Consumption as Production.- Interaction, Experience and the Future of Music.- Hail to the Thief: The Appropriation of Music in the Digital Age.
