Martin Love, The Guardian‘One of the most entertaining sports books I have ever read’ Joe Short, The Daily ExpressIn this award-winning collection of cycling tales, Wilfried de Jong uncovers the true soul of cycling – why we do it, why we watch it, why we hate it, why we love it – stripped bare. With his distinctly comic and melancholic charm Wilfried ponders life, love and death on his trusted bike, chasing the essence of our existence against the backdrop of major cycling events or while roaming alone in nature. Amazon Publishing Sprinting Through No Man's Land: Endurance,
Book SynopsisThe inspiring, heart-pumping true story of soldiers turned cyclists and the historic 1919 Tour de France that helped to restore a war-torn country and its people. On June 29, 1919, one day after the Treaty of Versailles brought about the end of World War I, nearly seventy cyclists embarked on the thirteenth Tour de France. From Paris, the war-weary men rode down the western coast on a race that would trace the country's border, through seaside towns and mountains to the ghostly western front. Traversing a cratered postwar landscape, the cyclists faced near-impossible odds and the psychological scars of war. Most of the athletes had arrived straight from the front, where so many fellow countrymen had suffered or died. The cyclists' perseverance and tolerance for pain would be tested in a grueling, monthlong competition. An inspiring true story of human endurance, Sprinting Through No Man's Land explores how the cyclists united a country that had been torn apart by unprecedented desolation and tragedy. It shows how devastated countrymen and women can come together to celebrate the adventure of a lifetime and discover renewed fortitude, purpose, and national identity in the streets of their towns.'This is an evocatively written homage to the 1919 Tour… This inspirational sports story demonstrates the power of a race to unite a country suffering from the wounds of war and is immersed in wartime historical detail. Cycling fans will get more than an account of the race in this volume, which will also appeal to readers interested in WWI.' — Booklist

Book Synopsis''Ah, I remember you: you''re the guy who lost the Tour de France by eight seconds!''''No monsieur, I''m the guy who won the Tour twice. The international bestselling autobiography of the legendary French cyclist Laurent Fignon Two-time winner of the Tour de France in the early eighties, Laurent Fignon became the star for a new generation. In the 1989 tour, he lost out to his American arch-rival, Greg LeMond, by an agonising eight seconds. In this revealing account, the former champion spares nobody, not even himself, and pulls back the curtain on what really went on behind the scenes of this epic sport - the friendships, the rivalries, the betrayals, the parties, the girls and, of course, the performance-enhancing drugs. Fignon''s story bestrides a golden age in cycling: a time when the headlines spoke of heroes, not doping, and a time when cyclists were afraid of nothing.Sports book of the year: He''s Trade ReviewAstonishing. Vintage Publishing Cycling is My Life
The cyclist Tom Simpson is a legend. The first British world champion, the first Briton to pull on the fabled yellow jersey of the Tour de France - he brought professional cycling to a nation and inspired generations of riders. His autobiography, Cycling is My Life, was written the year before he died tragically on the barren moonscape of Mont Ventoux during the 1967 Tour aged just twenty-nine. Forty years on, hundreds of fans still make the pilgrimage to the windswept memorial which marks the spot where he died. In an age where each Tour de France seems more blighted by scandal than the next, Simpson''s story is as relevant now as it was then. A man of contradictions, Simpson was one of the first cyclists to admit to using banned drugs, yet the dapper ''Major Tom'' inspired awe and affection from the British public for the obsessive will to win which was ultimately to cost him his life. First published in 1966, Simpson''s autobiography is essential reading fo

University of Washington Press Bike Battles A History of Sharing the American
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Carefully researched, thoroughly documented, and very engaging, this is a book that everyone who travels needs to read and understand." * Choice *"Bike Battles is an enjoyable read that highlights important historical conflicts that shaped our current roadways. It is accessible and appropriate for any undergraduate class or person interested in bicycling." -- Lindsay Parks Pieper * Sports in American History *"A measure of any book is whether it makes you think beyond its pages, and Bike Battles did just that for me. My dad used to tell me that if I got only one thing out of a book — an interesting fact, a point of view I hadn’t previously considered, something helpful to my life or just entertainment — the book was worth its cover price. By that standard Bike Battles is a bargain. It allowed me to see the last 150 years of riding in America like a mosaic on the wall. I won’t look at parked cars the same way again. The book ought to give today’s bicycle advocates a sense of their place in history and make them proud to continue the battle." -- Grant Petersen * Wall Street Journal *"The book provides in scholarly and very readable style an analysis of cycling as it serves as a locus of conflict over the use and ownership of public commons. . . . Although bikes are the primary material theme of the book, they are a means to illustrate larger social, cultural, and political processes." -- Peter Cox * Journal of Transport History *"These colorful references, coupled with Longhurst's light and natural writing style, make Bike Battles easy to read." -- Amy Goetzman * MinnPost *"Longhurst’s accounts build on a truly innovative use of multiple sources, from legal texts, design manuals, and newspaper articles to sitcoms and traffic education films. These chapters are pleasant reads and convincing narratives. . . . In going beyond the present, this book helps us understand why motorists so often consider the road as their birthright. It is not because of an oft-claimed American love affair with the car, Longhurst asserts, but because of those multiple lost bike battles during the past hundred years." -- Martin Emanuel * Transfers *"In six chapters, [Longhurst] traces the history of what is essentially road-sharing: first horses and carts mixed with pedestrians; then trolleys and buses; then, after WWII, an overwhelming shift, funded by federal highway dollars, to the primacy of the car." * Seattle Weekly *"An excellent, enlightening new book." -- Knute Berger * Seattle Magazine *"Longhurst tackles this debate between bike riders, motorists, and pedestrians by exploring the different mediums Americans have used to create opinions on the bicycle, such as: popular songs, advertising, films, newspapers, and television." * Momentum Magazine (2015 Best New Bike Book) *"Longhurst has provided an accessible and highly readable story of the bicycle. . . . [He] has taken us on a legal and cultural ramble on the American road as well as given us a useful model of engaged and responsible urban history scholarship." -- Joshua Lupkin * Journal of American History *"Reading Bike Battles is like riding down a smooth path with some unexpected sightseeing along the way. The writing is accessible and fun to read. . . . Especially relevant to a generation of students who are more likely to consider forms of transportation beyond the car, this book is a promising addition to a history, urban planning, or environmental studies class." -- Margot Higgins * Environmental History *"Bike Battles provides a well-researched foundation into many of the issues of bicycle planning today, and is especially valuable by framing the battles as more than just legal rights." -- Peter Furth * Transport Reviews *"Longhurst provides general readers with a sprightly history of the political and legal battles over cycling from the late nineteenth century to the present . . . The bicyclists currently navigating traffic-choked streets, inhaling exhaust and darting between behemoth SUVs, like many other aspects of the contemporary urban landscape, Longhurst asserts, represent the legal and institutional legacy of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era." -- Bruce J. Schulman * Reviews in American History *"You should absolutely buy and hold [Bike Battles] up as a righteous rebuke the next time someone complains that ‘the war on cars is real.’ Longhurst maps out the perfect storm of American consumer trends, policy decisions, and historical events that led to that car cutting you off downtown just now." -- Megan Burbank * Portland Mercury *"Tells the fascinating story of the legal and political battles over bicycles on the road. . . . Longhurst’s timely study shows that the arguments over bikes and road space are not new and also holds lessons for present-day bicycle advocates who would be wise to avoid the mistakes that scuttled earlier efforts to build bike infrastructure in US cities . . . will be of great interest to anyone interested in the history of bike policy and roads in the US." -- John Lloyd * Boy on a Bike! blog *"Intelligent, relevant and enlightening, Bike Battles is what all history should be. The reader needn’t be a policy wonk or a cycling enthusiast to appreciate the lessons, and its array of old photographs and sketches (bike commuters in 1902, “high riders” in Boston in 1880) are delightful. All in all, it’s a worthy ride." -- Jennifer Graham * The Hippo *"His book, while academically rigorous, is easily accessible to the general public. In fact, I found it a page-turner as would any one who rides a bike on the streets of any American city or rural place." -- Dave Cieslewicz * Isthmus *"In six chapters, [Longhurst] traces the history of what is essentially road-sharing: first horses and carts mixed with pedestrians; then trolleys and buses; then, after WWII, an overwhelming shift, funded by federal highway dollars, to the primacy of the car." -- Joe Garvin * City Living Seattle *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction 1. Pen & Sword Books Ltd A Champion Cyclist Against the Nazis: The
Book SynopsisItaly, 1943\. Although allied with Hitler, there were those who refused to accept the fascist policies of racial discrimination and deportation. Among them was Gino Bartali. A champion cyclist, he won the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) three times and the Tour de France twice. But these weren't his only achievements. Deeply religious, Bartali never spoke about what he did during those dark years, when he agreed to work with the Resistance and pass messages from one end of the country to the other. Despite the dangers, Bartali used his training as a pretext to criss-cross Italy, hiding documents in the handlebars and saddle of his bicycle, all the while hoping that each time he was searched they wouldn't think to disassemble his machine. As a result of his bravery, 800 Jews including numerous children were saved from deportation. He died in Florence in 2000 and was recognised as one of the 'Righteous Among the Nations' in 2013. In this book, Alberto Toscano shares the incredible story of this great sportsman and recalls the dramatic moments in Italy and Europe in the twentieth century.

Book SynopsisRaging Love is about athlete Jimmie D. King's rise to fame as an angry, chronically injured powerlifting champion to a happy, healthy cyclist and bodybuilder. The reader will witness a man who learns to be at ease with himself through mentoring and coaching others to become a better version of themselves. With stunning candor, King shares his intimate and deeply personal perspective-including his challenges and struggles with bullies, physical limitations, childhood abuse, disappointments, oppression, and racism-and how he evolved and adapted over seven decades all while learning to serve and develop the talents of others. Far more than a sports memoir, Raging Love is a gripping tale of perseverance and purpose and a reminder that finding one's path is, above all, an evolution from psychological discipline and mental toughness to forgiveness, spiritual peace, self-knowledge, and self-love. This is a must-read that will inspire sports fans of all ages. The reader will cheer for King as he wrestles his rage, learns to forgive, and turns his focus to love and service of others.Trade Review"Jimmie and Lori are two of the highest frequency people I have met. You know them before they even speak with smiles that can light up a room, and a positivity that is tangible! Their biggest gifts are being able to translate their pain, growth and healing into a passion to help others." - LAURA MULVIHILL, LIFESTYLE ENTREPRENEUR; "I could not put this book down. I read Raging Love in one day. Captivating, raw, insightful and a true glimpse of grit." JENNIFER OSTROWSKI; "I've known Lori since high school and have never had the opportunity to meet her husband, Jimmie; at least until reading this book. My favorite quote from Raging Love: 'People aren't defined by the storm they face; they're defined by how they react to the storm.' We all face storms in life; some of those preparing us for our futures, as many of them did for Jimmie in a variety of ways. Great book for anyone-not just the sports enthusiast-looking for purpose and trying to find their way in a crazy world." RUTH O'NEILL, AUTHOR of the What a Difference a Year Makes series.

Batsford Ltd Cycling Touring Guide: Central England: revised
Book SynopsisThe revised edition of the classic cycling guide by Harold Briercliffe of 1949. Used as the inspiration for the Britain by Bike television series and a vital part of the award-winning Britain by Bike book by Jane Eastoe, the original book is reproduced along with suggested cycling routes in the Central England region for today's cyclists. Harold Briercliffe was the Alfred Wainwright of cycling and his books provide great insight into cycling in various parts of the UK in the 1940s. Harold's fascinating description of the towns, villages and roads of Britain at the time is a joy for all those who love these isles and especially for cyclists looking for inspiration. Many roads have changed over the decades and are now too busy for enjoyable cycling, so Mark Jarman, along with Sustrans, have made suggestions for alternative routes in the region for today's cyclists. The book includes the original photographs taken by Harold Briercliffe and the original illustrations. The Cycling Touring Guide: Central England covers cycle routes in the Peak District, Cheshire and north Shropshire, East of the Pennines, the Midlands, the Malverns, the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean and various routes north of London. The cycle routes vary in length from half day and day-long trips to weekend and week-long tours.

The routes are ideal for gravel/adventure bikes (or hybrid/cross), though most can be easily adapted for road bikes. Each ride features step-by-step route description accompanied by 1:100,000 mapping. Overview stats and profiles are provided to aid route selection, along with details of refreshments, parking facilities and cycle hire, and full accommodation listings for the Tour de Peak District. The guide also includes tips for cycling the routes and advice for novices. The scenic Peak District boasts an abundance of country lanes, tracks, towpaths and railway trails that are perfect for two-wheeled exploration.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Preface to the 2nd edition Introduction Geology Wildlife Plants and flowers History Art, culture and local festivities When to go Getting there Getting around Accommodation Food and drink Money Bike setup/Choice of bike Cycling technique What to wear What to take Maps Waymarking and access Emergencies and first aid Using this guide Day rides Route 1 Ashopton loop via Derwent Reservoir Route 1a Ladybower west and Thornhill extensions Route 2 Rail Trails loop from Friden Route 3 Chesterfield loop via Transpennine Trail Route 4 Carsington Reservoir loop Route 5 Middlewood loop via Lyme Park Route 6 Ashbourne loop via Hognaston Route 7 Chesterfield loop via Holymoorside and Leash Fen Route 8 Tissington loop via Elton Route 9 Wirksworth loop via Hartington Route 10 Bakewell loop via Hartington Route 11 Buxton loop via Bakewell (White Peak loop) Route 12 Waterhouses loop via Morridge and Longnor Route 13 Penistone loop via Holmfirth Route 14 Tideswell loop via Peak Forest Route 15 Leek loop via the Roaches Route 16 Grindleford loop via Edale Route 17 Tideswell loop via Mam Tor Route 18 Middlewood loop via Pym Chair Route 19 Marsden loop via Saddleworth Moor Route 20 Macclesfield loop via the Roaches Tour de Peak District Day 1 Matlock to Dungworth Day 2 Dungworth to Marsden Day 3 Marsden to New Mills (main route) Day 3a Marsden to Whaley Bridge (road route) Day 4 New Mills (or Whaley Bridge) to Blackshaw Moor Day 5 Blackshaw Moor to Matlock Appendix A Route summary table and distance chart Appendix B TdPD table of accommodation Appendix C Accommodation on the TdPD Appendix D Cycle maintenance
