Springer Automatic trend estimation
Book SynopsisOur book introduces a method to evaluate the accuracy of trend estimation algorithms under conditions similar to those encountered in real time series processing. This method is based on Monte Carlo experiments with artificial time series numerically generated by an original algorithm. The second part of the book contains several automatic algorithms for trend estimation and time series partitioning. The source codes of the computer programs implementing these original automatic algorithms are given in the appendix and will be freely available on the web. The book contains clear statement of the conditions and the approximations under which the algorithms work, as well as the proper interpretation of their results. We illustrate the functioning of the analyzed algorithms by processing time series from astrophysics, finance, biophysics, and paleoclimatology. The numerical experiment method extensively used in our book is already in common use in computational and statistical physics.Table of ContentsDiscrete stochastic processes and time series.- Trend definition.- Finite AR(1) stochastic process.- Monte Carlo experiments. - Monte Carlo statistical ensembles.- Numerical generation of trends.- Numerical generation of noisy time series.- Statistical hypothesis testing.- Testing the i.i.d. property.- Polynomial fitting.- Linear regression.- Polynomial fitting.- Polynomial fitting of artificial time series.- An astrophysical example.- Noise smoothing.- Moving average.- Repeated moving average (RMA).- Smoothing of artificial time series.- A financial example.- Automatic estimation of monotonic trends.- Average conditional displacement (ACD) algorithm.- Artificial time series with monotonic trends.- Automatic ACD algorithm.- Evaluation of the ACD algorithm.- A paleoclimatological example.- Statistical significance of the ACD trend.- Time series partitioning.- Partitioning of trends into monotonic segments.- Partitioning of noisy signals into monotonic segments.- Partitioning of a real time series.- Estimation of the ratio between the trend and noise.- Automatic estimation of arbitrary trends.- Automatic RMA (AutRMA).- Monotonic segments of the AutRMA trend.- Partitioning of a financial time series.

Springer Solved Problems in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics
Book SynopsisThe aim of this work is to bridge the gap between the well-known Newtonian mechanics and the studies on chaos, ordinarily reserved to experts. Several topics are treated: Lagrangian, Hamiltonian and Jacobi formalisms, studies of integrable and quasi-integrable systems. The chapter devoted to chaos also enables a simple presentation of the KAM theorem. All the important notions are recalled in summaries of the lectures. They are illustrated by many original problems, stemming from real-life situations, the solutions of which are worked out in great detail for the benefit of the reader. This book will be of interest to undergraduate students as well as others whose work involves mechanics, physics and engineering in general.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The present book fills an important gap in the scientific literature since most books on analytical mechanics concentrate on the theoretical aspects. A great number of exercises and problems are divided into eight chapters … . In conclusion, this is an excellent source of concrete examples for students and mathematicians from several fields.” (Mircea Crâşmăreanu, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1172, 2009)Table of ContentsForeword Synoptic Tables. Atlantis Press (Zeger Karssen) Lyapunov Exponents of Linear Cocycles:
Book SynopsisThe aim of this monograph is to present a general method of proving continuity of Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles. The method uses an inductive procedure based on a general, geometric version of the Avalanche Principle. The main assumption required by this method is the availability of appropriate large deviation type estimates for quantities related to the iterates of the base and fiber dynamics associated with the linear cocycle. We establish such estimates for various models of random and quasi-periodic cocycles. Our method has its origins in a paper of M. Goldstein and W. Schlag. Our present work expands upon their approach in both depth and breadth. We conclude this monograph with a list of related open problems, some of which may be treated using a similar approach.Trade Review“The effort of the authors to make this text self-contained and to make the exposition very clear and delightful was successful, making this monograph an excellent contribution for both graduate student and anyone interested in the continuity of Lyapunov Exponents.” (Paulo Varandas, Mathematical Reviews, June, 2018)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Estimates on Grassmann Manifolds.- Abstract Continuity of Lyapunov Exponents.- The Oseledets Filtration and Decomposition.- Large Deviations for Random Cocycles.- Large Deviations for Quasi-Periodic Cocycles.- Further Related Problems.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Quasi-conservative Systems: Cycles, Resonances And Chaos
Book SynopsisThis monograph presents the theory of nonconservative systems close to nonlinear integrable ones. With the example of concrete quasi-conservative systems close to nonintegrable ones, the results of numerical analysis are given, and the problem of applying the small parameter method is analyzed. The fundamantal part of the book deals with the investigation of the perturbable systems. Both autonomous and nonautonomous (periodic in time) systems are considered. The global analysis of systems close to the two-dimensional Hamiltonian ones takes a central place in the text. This global analysis includes the solution to problems such as the limit cycles, resonances, and nonregular dynamics. For the autonomous systems, one should note the analysis of the standard (Duffing and pendulum) equations including the solution to the “weakened” 16 Hilbert's problem, and for the nonautonomous systems one should note the mathematical foundations of the theory of synchronization of oscillations (the existence of new regimes, and the passage of invariant tori across the resonance zones under the change of detuning). The presentation is accompanied by examples.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Chaotic Dynamics In Hamiltonian Systems: With
Book SynopsisIn the past hundred years investigators have learned the significance of complex behavior in deterministic systems. The potential applications of this discovery are as numerous as they are encouraging. This text clearly presents the mathematical foundations of chaotic dynamics, including methods and results at the forefront of current research. The book begins with a thorough introduction to dynamical systems and their applications. It goes on to develop the theory of regular and stochastic behavior in higher-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems, covering topics such as homoclinic chaos, KAM theory, the Melnikov method, and Arnold diffusion. Theoretical discussions are illustrated by a study of the dynamics of small circumasteroidal grains perturbed by solar radiation pressure. With alternative derivations and proofs of established results substituted for those in the standard literature, this work serves as an important source for researchers, students and teachers.Skillfully combining in-depth mathematics and actual physical applications, this book will be of interest to the applied mathematician, the theoretical mechanical engineer and the dynamical astronomer alike.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd General Systems Theory: Ideas And Applications
Book SynopsisThe world in which classical positivistic science and technology obtained great success has vanished. However, the way of thinking promoted by that epoch still lingers in our social consciousness, sometimes as a burden. To conquer the shortcomings of classical analytical science in the modern, ever more complex world, systems theory and its applications within systems science present an alternative to old paradigms.Systems theorists see common principles in the structure and operation of systems of all kinds and sizes. They promote an interdisciplinary science adapted for a universal application with a common language and area of concepts. This approach is seen as a means of not only overcoming the fragmentation of knowledge and the isolation of the specialist, but also finding new solutions to problems created by the earlier “solution of problems”.This book introduces the systemic alternative. It is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the historical background of the systems movement, and presents pioneering thoughts and theories of the area. Basic concepts of general systems theory with well-known laws and principles are discussed, as well as related topics like cybernetics and information theory. The second part deals with some of the common applications of systems theory within systems science, such as artificial intelligence, management information systems and informatics. An attempt is made to predict the future of systems theory in a world apparently becoming fragmented and integrated at the same time.To engage oneself in systems theory and its striving towards an applied universal science is a highly cross-scientific occupation. The reader will come into contact with many different academic disciplines, and consequently the possibility of an all-round education — something particularly needed in our over-specialized world.Table of ContentsPart 1 The theories and why: the emergence of holistic thinking; basic ideas of general systems theory; a selection of systems theories; communication and information theory; some theories of brain and mind. Part 2 The applications and how: artificial intelligence and life; organization theory and management cybernetics; decision making and decision aids; informatics; some of the system methodologies; the future of systems theory.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Strict-Feedback Nonlinear Systems: Gain Control
Book SynopsisThis book describes the research progress of the control design about strict-feedback nonlinear systems. A novel gain control design method is proposed, which greatly simplifies the construction procedure of controller for strict-feedback nonlinear systems. The control design problem of strict-feedback nonlinear systems is converted into the determination problem of gain parameters or the construction of dynamic gain equations. Therefore, the tedious iterative design procedure is effectively avoided. This book can be used as a reference for researchers in the field of control theory and engineers seeking advanced methods in practical control applications. Trade Review“Strict-feedback nonlinear systems remain general enough to cover a wide class of dynamical systems in practical control applications. … This book is devoted to presenting a systematic description of recent progress in stability and control of strict-feedback nonlinear systems, mainly within the gain control design framework. … the book may be helpful for some researchers who want to begin the research of strict-feedback nonlinear systems.” (Han Sheng Wu, Mathematical Reviews, December, 2023)“This book is of great interest to researchers in the fields of control theory and applied mathematics, as well as the engineers who search for advanced methodologies for practical control applications.” (Mihail Voicu, zbMATH 1519.93004, 2023)Table of Contents1 Introduction1.1 A Brief History 1.2 Examples in Science and Engineering 1.3 Methods and Comparisons 1.4 Fundamental Concepts 2 Control Design of Nonlinear Systems with Constant Gain2.1 Global Stabilization of a Class of Time-Delay Nonlinear Systems 2.2 Disturbance Rejection Control for Systems with Quantized Input and Output2.3 Feedback Stabilization Control for Fractional Order Nonlinear Systems3 Finite Time Control of Nonlinear Systems with Time-varying Gain3.1 Finite-Time Stabilization for Time-Varying Nonlinear Systems3.2 Feedback Stabilization of Nonlinear Systems in any Prescribed Finite Time4 Event-Triggered Control of Nonlinear Systems with Functional Gain4.1 Tracking Control for Nonlinear Systems via Output Feedback 4.2 Output Feedback Control of Switched Systems with Input Saturation5 Control Design of Lower Triangular Nonholonomic Systems 5.1 A Gain Approach to Feedback Regulation of Uncertain Time-Varying Systems 5.2 Sampled-Data Integral Control of Nonholonomic Systems with Disturbances6 Output Feedback Control of Large Scale Nonlinear Systems6.1 Output Feedback Control of Large-Scale Nonlinear Time-Delay Systems 6.2 Event-Triggered Decentralized Control for Systems with Actuator Failures 7 Control Design of Distributed Protocol For Multi-Agent System7.1 Leader-Follower Consensus of Time-Varying Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems7.2 Prescribed-Time Regulation of Uncertain Systems via Output Feedback7.3 Event-Triggered Consensus Protocol for Nonlinear Multi-Agent SystemsReferences

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Complexus Mundi: Emergent Patterns In Nature
Book SynopsisThe dynamics of complex systems can clarify the creation of structures in Nature. This creation is driven by the collective interaction of constitutive elements of the system. Such interactions are frequently nonlinear and are directly responsible for the lack of prediction in the evolution process. The self-organization accompanying these processes occurs all around us and is constantly being rediscovered, under the guise of a new jargon, in apparently unrelated disciplines. This volume offers unique perspectives on aspects of fractals and complexity and, through the examination of complementary techniques, provides a unifying thread in this multidisciplinary endeavor. Do nonlinear interactions play a role in the complexity management of socio-econo-political systems? Is it possible to extract the global properties of genetic regulatory networks without knowing the details of individual genes? What can one learn by transplanting the self-organization effects known in laser processes to the study of emotions? What can the change in the level of complexity tell us about the physiological state of the organism? The reader will enjoy finding the answers to these questions and many more in this book.Table of Contents# Structure of Genetic Regulatory Networks: Evidence for Scale Free Networks (L S Liebovitch et al.) # Modelling Fractal Dynamics (B J West) # Fractional Relaxation of Distributed Order (R Gorenflo & F Mainardi) # Fractional Time: Dishomogeneous Poisson Processes vs. Homogeneous Non-Poisson Processes (P Allegrini et al.) # Markov Memory in Multifractal Natural Processes (N Papasimakis & F Pallikari) # Description of Complex Systems in Terms of Self-Organization Processes of Prime Integer Relations (V Korotkikh & G Korotkikh) # Dynamical Decomposition of Multifractal Time Series as Fractal Evolution and Long-Term Cycles: Applications to Foreign Currency Exchange Market (A Turiel & C Perez-Vicente) # Fractal Sets from Noninvertible Maps (Ch Mira) # A Generative Construction and Visualization of 3D Fractal Measures (T Martyn) # Complexity in Nature and Society: Complexity Management in the Age of Globalization (K Mainzer) # Fractals, Complexity and Chaos in Supply Chain Networks (M Pearson) # The Effects of Different Competition Rules on the Power-Law Exponent of High Income Distribution (K Yamamoto et al.) # Synergetics on Its Way to the Life Sciences (H Haken) # Complexity, Fractals, Nature and Industrial Design: Some Connections (N Sala) # Modelling Pattern Formation Upon Laser-Induced Etching (A Mora et al.) # Fractal Properties of Some Machined Surfaces (T R Thomas & B-G Rosen) # Fractals, Morphological Spectrum and Complexity of Interfacial Patterns in Non-Equilibrium Solidification (P K Galenko & D M Herlach) # Competition of Doublon Structure in the Phase-Field Model (S Tokunaga & H Sakaguchi) # Study of Thermal Field in Composite Materials (P Stefkova et al.) # Simulation of Geochemical Banding in Acidization-Precipitation Experiments In Situ (M Msharrafieh et al.) # Bulk Mediated Surface Diffusion: Non Markovian and Biased Behavior (J A Revelli et al) # Multifractal Formalism for Remote Sensing: A Contribution to the Description and the Understanding of Meteorological Phenomena in Satellite Images (J Grazzini et al.) # The Distance Ratio Fractal Image (X-Z Zhang et al.) # Iterated Function Systems in Mixed Euclidean and p-Adic Spaces (B Sing) # Multifractality of the Multiplicative Autogressive Point Processes (B Kaulakys et al.) # Analysis of Geographical Distribution Patterns in Plants Using Fractals (A Bari et al.) # Hierarchy of Cellular Automata in Relation to Control of Chaos or Anticontrol (M Markus et al.) # Fractal Analysis of the Images Using Wavelet Transformation (P Jerabkova et al.) # Clustering Phenomena in the Time Distribution of Lightning (L Telesca et al.) # A Cornucopia of Connections: Finding Four Familiar Fractals in the Tower of Hanoi (D R Camp) # Monitoring the Depth of Anaesthesia Using Fractal Complexity Method (W Klonowski et al.) # The Complex Couplings and Gompertzian Dynamics (P Waliszewski & J Konarski)

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Processes Of Emergence Of Systems And Systemic
Book SynopsisThis book contains the Proceedings of the 2007 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of emergence, considering theoretical aspects and applications from physics, cognitive science, biology, artificial intelligence, economics, architecture, philosophy, music and social systems. Such an interdisciplinary study implies the need to model and distinguish, in different disciplinary contexts, the establishment of structures, systems and systemic properties. Systems, as modeled by the observer, not only possess properties, but are also able to make emergent new properties. While current disciplinary models of emergence are based on theories of phase transitions, bifurcations, dissipative structures, multiple systems and organization, the present volume focuses on both generalizing those disciplinary models and identifying correspondences and new more general approaches. The general conceptual framework of the book relates to the attempt to build a general theory of emergence as a general theory of change, corresponding to Von Bertalanffy's project for a general system theory.Table of ContentsTheoretical Problems of Systemics; Emergence; Emergence in Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, Economics and Management, Medicine, and Social Systems; Cognitive Science: Models and Systems.
