Book SynopsisThis book highlights the pulchritudinous features of FRP composites emphasizing failure criteria referring to microstructural as well as micromechanical aspects. The potential and promises of this class of material as being explored for supercritical applications necessitate the analysis and assessment of FRPs with a spectrum of low to high strain rates. Additionally, constitutive modeling and shock properties of polymeric composites along with the data processing techniques and relevant theories for different characterization methods are conversed. The findings of previous studies available on mechanical characteristics of polymer composites under quasi-static and high-strain-rate circumstances are also discussed. The dearth of open literature and limited information culminate the need for this book which may eventually bridge the existing gap. Table of ContentsIntroduction to Composite Materials.- Polymer Matrix Materials for Ballistic Armors.- Fiber reinforcements.- Characterization techniques in different strain-rate spectrum.- Microstructural Failure Mechanisms Analysis.- Micromechanics of FRP Composites and the Analytical Approach for Ballistic Response.- Recent development of constitutive models for strain-rate sensitive FRP composite materials.- High-Velocity Impact Modeling in Materials Science: A Multiscale Perspective.- Interface Engineering.

  • Cambridge University Press Chaos in Dynamical Systems

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the new edition of this classic textbook Edward Ott has added much new material and has significantly increased the number of homework problems. The most important change is the addition of a completely new chapter on control and synchronization of chaos.Trade ReviewFrom reviews of the previous edition: '… a stimulating selection of topics that could be taught a la carte in postgraduate courses. The book is given unity by a preoccupation with scaling arguments, but covers almost all aspects of the subject (dimensions of strange attractors, transitions to chaos, thermodynamic formalism, scattering quantum chaos and so on … Ott has managed to capture the beauty of this subject in a way that should motivate and inform the next generation of students in applied dynamical systems.' NatureFrom reviews of the previous edition: '… proves there is definitely enough worthwhile material on chaos to fill a semester … Chapter exercises are at a good level for graduate students … worthwhile for the researcher who wants to learn about chaos on his or her own … a welcome volume for those who keep even modest collections on nonlinear dynamics.' Physics Today'… a book that will be of most interest to physicists and engineers … The book is well written, and does contain material that is hard to find elsewhere. In particular, the discussion of fractal basin boundaries is lucidly written, and this is an important topic.' Bulletin of Mathematical Biology'This second edition updates and expands the first edition. This very comprehensive book on chaotic dynamics is intended to use in a graduate course for scientists and engineers. It can also be used as a reference for researchers in the field of nonlinear dynamics.' • In a Flight of Starlings

Penguin Putnam Inc In a Flight of Starlings

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the 2021 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, an enlightening and personal journey into the practice of groundbreaking science “[Giorgio Parisi is] an extraordinary scientist.” —Carlo RovelliWith In a Flight of Starlings, celebrated physicist Giorgio Parisi guides us through his unorthodox yet exhilarating work, starting with investigating the principles of physics by observing the flight of flocks of birds. Studying the movements of these communities, he has realized, proves an illuminating way into understanding complex systems of all kinds—collections of everything from atoms and planets to other animals, such as ourselves.Along the way, he reflects on the lessons he has taken from a life in pursuit of scientific truth: the importance of serendipity to the discovery of new ideas, the surprising kinship between physics and other disciplines, and the value of science to a thriving society. In so doing, he removes the practice of science from the confines of the laboratory and brings it into the real world.Part elegant scientific treatise, part thrilling journey of discovery, In a Flight of Starlings is an invitation to find wonder in the world around us.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCyberwars in the Middle East argues that hacking is a form of online political disruption whose influence flows vertically in two directions (top-bottom or bottom-up) or horizontally. These hacking activities are performed along three political dimensions: international, regional, and local. Author Ahmed Al-Rawi argues that political hacking is an aggressive and militant form of public communication employed by tech-savvy individuals, regardless of their affiliations, in order to influence politics and policies. Kenneth Waltz’s structural realism theory is linked to this argument as it provides a relevant framework to explain why nation-states employ cyber tools against each other. On the one hand, nation-states as well as their affiliated hacking groups like cyber warriors employ hacking as offensive and defensive tools in connection to the cyber activity or inactivity of other nation-states, such as the role of Russian Trolls disseminating disinformation on social media during the US 2016 presidential election. This is regarded as a horizontal flow of political disruption. Sometimes, nation-states, like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, use hacking and surveillance tactics as a vertical flow (top-bottom) form of online political disruption by targeting their own citizens due to their oppositional or activists’ political views. On the other hand, regular hackers who are often politically independent practice a form of bottom-top political disruption to address issues related to the internal politics of their respective nation-states such as the case of a number of Iraqi, Saudi, and Algerian hackers. In some cases, other hackers target ordinary citizens to express opposition to their political or ideological views which is regarded as a horizontal form of online political disruption. This book is the first of its kind to shine a light on many ways that governments and hackers are perpetrating cyber attacks in the Middle East and beyond, and to show the ripple effect of these attacks. Trade Review"Cyberwars in the Middle East offers a much-needed and astute take on the increasingly crucial role hacking and cyberoperations are playing across the Middle East. With empirical breadth and assiduous attention to detail Al-Rawi documents the multiple forms of ‘online political disruption’ that have become an inextricable part of the new digital authoritarianism that has arisen in the post-Arab Uprising milieu. A hugely important read." -- Marc O.
