  • Marcelo Viana - Selected Works

Springer International Publishing AG Marcelo Viana - Selected Works

Book SynopsisDynamical systems and the twin field ergodic theory have their roots in the qualitative theory of differential equations, developed by the great mathematician Henri Poincaré, and in the kinetic theory of gases built in mathematical terms by physicists James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann. Together, they aim to model, explain and predict the behavior of natural and artificial phenomena which evolve in time. For more than three decades, Marcelo Viana has been making several outstanding contributions to this area of mathematics. This volume contains a selection of his research papers, covering a wide range of topics: rigorous theory of strange attractors, physical measures, bifurcation theory, homoclinic phenomena, fractal dimensions, partial hyperbolicity, thermodynamic formalism, non-uniform hyperbolicity, interval exchange maps Teichmüller flows, and the modern theory of Lyapunov exponents. Marcelo Viana, a world leader in this field, has been the object of several academic distinctions, such as the inaugural Ramanujan prize of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, and the Louis D. Scientific Grand Prix of the Institut de France. Book SynopsisThis book touches upon various aspects of a very interesting, and growing in popularity category of models of dynamical systems. These are the so-called fractional-order systems. Such models are not only relevant for many fields of science and technology, but may also find numerous applications in other disciplines applying the mathematical modelling tools. Thus, the book is intended for a very wide audience of professionals who want to expand their knowledge of systems modelling and its applications. The book includes the selections of papers presented at the International Conference on Fractional Calculus and its Applications organized by the Warsaw University of Technology and was held online on 6–8 September 2021.The International Conference on Fractional Calculus and its Applications (ICFDA) has an almost twenty years history. It started in Bordeaux (France) in 2004, followed by Porto (Portugal) 2006, Istanbul (Turkey) 2008, Badajoz (Spain) 2010, Nanjing (China) 2012, Catania (Italy) 2014, Novi Sad (Serbia) 2016, Amman (Jordan) 2018. Next ICFDA was planned in 2020 in Warsaw (Poland), but COVID-19 pandemic shifted it to 6–8 September 2021. Hence, the organizers were forced to change the form of the conference to the online one.In the volume twenty eight high-quality research papers presented during the ICFDA 2021 eleven Regular Sessions with an additional online Discussion Session are presented. The presented papers are scientifically inspiring, leading to new fruitful ideas. They cover a very broad range of many disciplines. Nowadays, and especially in such a subject as fractional calculus, it is very difficult to assign papers to specific scientific areas. So, many of the papers included have an interdisciplinary character.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book consists of papers on selected topics of dependability analysis in computer systems and networks which were discussed during the 17th DepCoS-RELCOMEX conference held in Wrocław, Poland, from June 27th to July 1st, 2022. Their collection will be an interesting source material for scientists, researchers, practitioners and students who are dealing with design, analysis and engineering of computer systems and networks and must ensure their dependable operation. Being probably the most complex technical systems ever engineered by man (and also, the most dynamically evolving ones), organization of contemporary computer systems and networks cannot be interpreted only as a structure built on the base of unreliable technical resources. Their evaluation must take into account a unique blend of interacting people, networks (together with mobile properties, cloud organization, Internet of Everything, etc.) and a large number of users dispersed geographically and constantly producing an unconceivable number of applications. Research methods being continuously developed for dependability analyses apply newest results of artificial and computational intelligence. Selection of papers in this book illustrates broad range of topics, often multi-disciplinary, which is considered in present-day dependability explorations; it also reveals an increasing role of the latest methods based on machine/deep learning and neural networks in these studies.Table of ContentsMeasures of Outlierness in High-Dimensional Data under Correlation of Features - with Application for Open-Set Classification, Szymon Datko, Henryk Maciejewski, Tomasz Walkowiak.- Multiprocessor tasks scheduling - Fuzzy Logic Approach, Dariusz Dorota.- Nonparametric tracking for time-varying nonlinearities using the kernel method, Purva Joshi, Grzegorz Mzyk.- Embedded systems' startup code optimization, Patryk Pankiewicz.- Influence of accelerometer placement on biometric gaitidentification, Aleksander Sawicki.- An Impact of Data Augmentation Techniques on the Robustness of CNNs, Kamil Szyc.- Dual Learning Model for Multiclass Brain Tumor classification, Rohit Thanki, Sanna Kaddoura.

  • Roads to Higher Dimensional Polytopic Projects:

Springer International Publishing AG Roads to Higher Dimensional Polytopic Projects:

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisHigh dimensional reference architectures presented here allows confronting and prevailing over the growing complexity of polytopic projects implementations.Such projects should be envisaged giving that conventional systems operations, equipments, methodologies or organizations will reach their limits for self-evolvability in high complexity conditions. Self-evolvable high complexity systems are based on high dimensional polytopic reference architectures.Polytope is the general term of the sequence: point, line, polygon, polyhedron and so on.The polytopic projects are targeting the artificiality, not only for materials where it is well known and applied, but also for biological, cognitive, intelligent and mathematical systems. The book highlights the polytopic projects basic similarity despite the noticeable difference as domains of application. The roads to follow and the algebra of changing roads are emphasized. The book is divided in 9 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the Polytopic Roadmap to 4D and beyond. The role for the dialogue of processes in duality of the non-Aristotelian Logic of Contradiction and of Included Middle is emphasized for different domains. Chapter 2 refers to chemical systems. Supramolecular chemistry, metal organic frameworks, MOF, and reaction networks, are the examples considered in the frame of polytopic chemistry. Chapter 3 refers to biological systems. Biological dynamical hierarchies and quasi-species are the considered case studies. Technological and scientific projects targeting artificiality for cells and viruses are considered. Chapter 4 refers to cognitive systems. Developmental stages, formal and relational concepts analysis, and neural coding are considered here. The roles of the 4D systems of systems of systems and of conceptual 4D-cube are emphasized. Artificiality for cognitive systems is the object of study.Chapter 5 refers to mathematical systems. Modeling levels and the 4D digital twins are discussed. Hopf monoids as tools for the study of combinations and separations, dual graded graphs and V-models are informally presented. Chapter 6 refers to application of formal concept analysis, FCA, for high dimensional separations, nesting and drug delivery. Chapter 7 refers to polytopic engineering systems as multiscale transfer, distributors-collectors, cyclic operations, middle vessel columns, mixing, assembly and designs. Equipments have been characterized using Polytopic Roadmaps and classified by Periodic Tables. Chapter 8 introduces polytopic industry, economy, society and sustainability. Chapter 9 outlines new domains of interest as arts and architecture, transdisciplinarity, complex systems and unity of sciences and engineering.Polytopic Roadmaps are proposed as Method for experts from various fields to synthesize their thinking and capabilities into new projects implementation to face and surpass high complexity. A repetitive finding of this book is that self-evolvability observed in physical systems is based on the same directed sequence of reference architectures as the self-evolvability of concepts in our mind. Continuing to develop the field of self-evolvable systems and presenting the polytopic roadmaps for 4D and beyond advances in ever growing complexity domains, the book will be useful to engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs and students in different branches of production, complex systems sciences and engineering, ecology and applied mathematics.Table of ContentsRoadmap to 4D and beyond.- Cognitive Systems.- Conceptual Systems.- Prospective.- Index.

  • Mathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and

Springer International Publishing AG Mathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and Ecology provides readers with the mathematical tools needed to understand and use mathematical models and read advanced mathematical biology books. It presents mathematics in biological contexts, focusing on the central mathematical ideas and the biological implications, with detailed explanations. The author assumes no mathematics background beyond elementary differential calculus. An introductory chapter on basic principles of mathematical modeling is followed by chapters on empirical modeling and mechanistic modeling. These chapters contain a thorough treatment of key ideas and techniques that are often neglected in mathematics books, such as the Akaike Information Criterion. The second half of the book focuses on analysis of dynamical systems, emphasizing tools to simplify analysis, such as the Routh-Hurwitz conditions and asymptotic analysis. Courses can be focused on either half of the book or thematically chosen material from both halves, such as a course on mathematical epidemiology. The biological content is self-contained and includes many topics in epidemiology and ecology. Some of this material appears in case studies that focus on a single detailed example, and some is based on recent research by the author on vaccination modeling and scenarios from the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem sets feature linked problems where one biological setting appears in multi-step problems that are sorted into the appropriate section, allowing readers to gradually develop complete investigations of topics such as HIV immunology and harvesting of natural resources. Some problems use programs written by the author for Matlab or Octave; these combine with more traditional mathematical exercises to give students a full set of tools for model analysis. Each chapter contains additional case studies in the form of projects with detailed directions. New appendices contain mathematical details on optimization, numerical solution of differential equations, scaling, linearization, and sophisticated use of elementary algebra to simplify problems.Trade Review“This is a well-written book, highly suitable for applied math undergraduate students.” (Stephanie Abo, Chi-Chung Cheung, Ryth Dasgupta, Pritha Dutta, Shervin Hakimi, Amandeep Kaur, Anita T. • Input-to-State Stability: Theory and Applications

Springer International Publishing AG Input-to-State Stability: Theory and Applications

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisInput-to-State Stability presents the dominating stability paradigm in nonlinear control theory that revolutionized our view on stabilization of nonlinear systems, design of robust nonlinear observers, and stability of nonlinear interconnected control systems. The applications of input-to-state stability (ISS) are manifold and include mechatronics, aerospace engineering, and systems biology. Although the book concentrates on the ISS theory of finite-dimensional systems, it emphasizes the importance of a more general view of infinite-dimensional ISS theory. This permits the analysis of more general system classes and provides new perspectives on and a better understanding of the classical ISS theory for ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Features of the book include: • a comprehensive overview of the theoretical basis of ISS; • a description of the central applications of ISS in nonlinear control theory; • a detailed discussion of the role of small-gain methods in the stability of nonlinear networks; and • an in-depth comparison of ISS for finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. The book also provides a short overview of the ISS theory for other systems classes (partial differential equations, hybrid, impulsive, and time-delay systems) and surveys the available results for the important stability properties that are related to ISS. The reader should have a basic knowledge of analysis, Lebesgue integration theory, linear algebra, and the theory of ODEs but requires no prior knowledge of dynamical systems or stability theory. The author introduces all the necessary ideas within the book. Input-to-State Stability will interest researchers and graduate students studying nonlinear control from either a mathematical or engineering background. It is intended for active readers and contains numerous exercises of varying difficulty, which are integral to the text, complementing and widening the material developed in the monograph.Table of Contents

Book SynopsisThis book presents a novel design framework for the development of Digital Twin (DT) models for process- and motion-control applications. It is based on system-data acquisition using cutting-edge computing technologies, modelling of physical-system behavior through detailed simultaneous simulation of different aspects of the system, and optimal dynamic behavior-matching of the process. The design framework is enhanced with real-time data analytics to improve the performance of the DT’s behavior-matching with the real system or physical twin. The methods of creating a DT detailed in Digital-Twin-Enabled Smart Control Engineering make possible the study of a system for real-time controller tuning and fault detection. They also facilitate life-cycle analysis for multiple critical and dangerous conditions that cannot be explored in the corresponding real system or physical twin. The authors show how a DT can be exploited to enable self-optimizing capabilities in feedback control systems. The DT framework and the control-performance assessment, fault diagnosis and prognosis, remaining-useful-life analysis, and self-optimizing control abilities it allows are validated with both process- and motion-control systems and their DTs. Supporting MATLAB-based material for a case study and an expanded introduction to the basic elements of DTs can be accessed on an associated website. This book helps university researchers from many areas of engineering to develop new tools for control design and reliability and life-cycle assessment and helps practicing engineers working with robotic, manufacturing and processing, and mechatronic systems to maintain and develop the mechanical tools they use.Table of ContentsDigital Twin Background.- A Digital Twin Development Framework.- Digital Twin Enabling Capabilities.- Smart Control Engineering Enabled by Digital Twin.- Summary and Future Research Opportunities.

Book SynopsisThis book considers a class of ergodic finite controllable Markov's chains. The main idea behind the method, described in this book, is to develop the original discrete optimization problems (or game models) in the space of randomized formulations, where the variables stand in for the distributions (mixed strategies or preferences) of the original discrete (pure) strategies in the use. The following suppositions are made: a finite state space, a limited action space, continuity of the probabilities and rewards associated with the actions, and a necessity for accessibility. These hypotheses lead to the existence of an optimal policy. The best course of action is always stationary. It is either simple (i.e., nonrandomized stationary) or composed of two nonrandomized policies, which is equivalent to randomly selecting one of two simple policies throughout each epoch by tossing a biased coin. As a bonus, the optimization procedure just has to repeatedly solve the time-average dynamic programming equation, making it theoretically feasible to choose the optimum course of action under the global restriction. In the ergodic cases the state distributions, generated by the corresponding transition equations, exponentially quickly converge to their stationary (final) values. This makes it possible to employ all widely used optimization methods (such as Gradient-like procedures, Extra-proximal method, Lagrange's multipliers, Tikhonov's regularization), including the related numerical techniques. In the book we tackle different problems and theoretical Markov models like controllable and ergodic Markov chains, multi-objective Pareto front solutions, partially observable Markov chains, continuous-time Markov chains, Nash equilibrium and Stackelberg equilibrium, Lyapunov-like function in Markov chains, Best-reply strategy, Bayesian incentive-compatible mechanisms, Bayesian Partially Observable Markov Games, bargaining solutions for Nash and Kalai-Smorodinsky formulations, multi-traffic signal-control synchronization problem, Rubinstein's non-cooperative bargaining solutions, the transfer pricing problem as bargaining.Table of ContentsControllable Markov Chains.- Multiobjective Control.- Partially Observable Markov Chains.- Continuous-Time Markov Chains.- Nash and Stackelberg Equilibrium.- Best-Reply Strategies in Repeated Games.- Mechanism design.- Joint Observer and Mechanism Design.- Bargaining Games or How to Negotiate.- Multi-Traffic Signal-Control Synchronization.- Non-cooperative bargaining with unsophisticated agents.- Transfer Pricing as Bargaining.- Index.

Book SynopsisSliding mode control is a simple and yet robust control technique, where the system states are made to confine to a selected subset. With the increasing use of computers and discrete-time samplers in controller implementation in the recent past, discrete-time systems and computer based control have become important topics. This monograph presents an output feedback sliding mode control philosophy which can be applied to almost all controllable and observable systems, while at the same time being simple enough as not to tax the computer too much. It is shown that the solution can be found in the synergy of the multirate output sampling concept and the concept of discrete-time sliding mode control.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Switching Function bases Multirate Output Feedback Sliding Mode Control.- Multirate Output Feedback based Discrete-time Sliding Mode in LTI systems with Uncertainty.- Multirate Output Feedback based Discrete-time Quasi-Sliding Mode Control of Time-Delay Systems.- Multirate Output Feedback Sliding Mode for Special Classes of Systems.- Discrete-time Terminal Sliding Mode: Concept.- Applications of Multirate Output Feedback Discrete-time Sliding Mode Control.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Supermathematics and its Applications in Statistical Physics: Grassmann Variables and the Method of Supersymmetry

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis text presents the mathematical concepts of Grassmann variables and the method of supersymmetry to a broad audience of physicists interested in applying these tools to disordered and critical systems, as well as related topics in statistical physics. Based on many courses and seminars held by the author, one of the pioneers in this field, the reader is given a systematic and tutorial introduction to the subject matter. The algebra and analysis of Grassmann variables is presented in part I. The mathematics of these variables is applied to a random matrix model, path integrals for fermions, dimer models and the Ising model in two dimensions. Supermathematics - the use of commuting and anticommuting variables on an equal footing - is the subject of part II. The properties of supervectors and supermatrices, which contain both commuting and Grassmann components, are treated in great detail, including the derivation of integral theorems. In part III, supersymmetric physical models are considered. While supersymmetry was first introduced in elementary particle physics as exact symmetry between bosons and fermions, the formal introduction of anticommuting spacetime components, can be extended to problems of statistical physics, and, since it connects states with equal energies, has also found its way into quantum mechanics. Several models are considered in the applications, after which the representation of the random matrix model by the nonlinear sigma-model, the determination of the density of states and the level correlation are derived. Eventually, the mobility edge behavior is discussed and a short account of the ten symmetry classes of disorder, two-dimensional disordered models, and superbosonization is given.Trade Review“This volume of Lecture Notes in Physics presents in three parts the topics of Grassmann algebra and its applications and the subject of supermathematics, where commuting and anticommuting variables are treated on equal footing, and its applications. … it may be of interest to those already in the field who want to expand their knowledge in both the underlying mathematics and its applications in physics.” (Moorad Alexanian, Mathematical Reviews, January, 2017)“Each chapter contains a set of illustrating problems supplied with answers in the book's end. Thus, this monograph can be used for practical teaching as well.” (Eugene Postnikov, zbMATH 1345.81003, 2016)Table of ContentsPart I Grassmann Variables and Applications.- Part II Supermathematics.- Part III Supersymmetry in Statistical Physics.- Summary and Additional Remarks.- References.- Solutions.- Index.

  • Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Methods and Applications of Algorithmic Complexity: Beyond Statistical Lossless Compression

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores a different pragmatic approach to algorithmic complexity rooted or motivated by the theoretical foundations of algorithmic probability and explores the relaxation of necessary and sufficient conditions in the pursuit of numerical applicability, with some of these approaches entailing greater risks than others in exchange for greater relevance and applicability. Some established and also novel techniques in the field of applications of algorithmic (Kolmogorov) complexity currently coexist for the first time, ranging from the dominant ones based upon popular statistical lossless compression algorithms (such as LZW) to newer approaches that advance, complement, and also pose their own limitations. Evidence suggesting that these different methods complement each other for different regimes is presented, and despite their many challenges, some of these methods are better grounded in or motivated by the principles of algorithmic information. The authors propose that the field can make greater contributions to science, causation, scientific discovery, networks, and cognition, to mention a few among many fields, instead of remaining either as a technical curiosity of mathematical interest only or as a statistical tool when collapsed into an application of popular lossless compression algorithms. This book goes, thus, beyond popular statistical lossless compression and introduces a different methodological approach to dealing with algorithmic complexity. For example, graph theory and network science are classic subjects in mathematics widely investigated in the twentieth century, transforming research in many fields of science from economy to medicine. However, it has become increasingly clear that the challenge of analyzing these networks cannot be addressed by tools relying solely on statistical methods. Therefore, model-driven approaches are needed. Recent advances in network science suggest that algorithmic information theory could play an increasingly important role in breaking those limits imposed by traditional statistical analysis (entropy or statistical compression) in modeling evolving complex networks or interacting networks. Further progress on this front calls for new techniques for an improved mechanistic understanding of complex systems, thereby calling out for increased interaction between systems science, network theory, and algorithmic information theory, to which this book contributes. Trade Review“The book starts practically from scratch: It defines Turing machines, Kolmogorov complexity, etc. So this book can be recommended not only to researchers in this area, but also to students and to researchers from other areas interested in complexity issues.” (Vladik Ya. Kreinovich, zbMATH 1497.68008, 2022)Table of ContentsPreliminaries.- Enumerating and simulating Turing machines.- The Coding Theorem Method.- Theoretical aspects of finite approximations to Levin’s semi-measure.

In some cases, from such dynamical data one can construct special compact complex surfaces, called Kato surfaces, related to some conjectures in complex geometry.Table of ContentsIntroduction.-1.Background.- 2.Dynamics in 2D.- 3.Rigid germs in higher dimension.- 4 Construction of non-Kahler 3-folds.- References.- Index.

  • Battery Management Systems: Design by Modelling

Springer Battery Management Systems: Design by Modelling

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBattery Management Systems - Design by Modelling describes the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) with the aid of simulation methods. The basic tasks of BMS are to ensure optimum use of the energy stored in the battery (pack) that powers a portable device and to prevent damage inflicted on the battery (pack). This becomes increasingly important due to the larger power consumption associated with added features to portable devices on the one hand and the demand for longer run times on the other hand. In addition to explaining the general principles of BMS tasks such as charging algorithms and State-of-Charge (SoC) indication methods, the book also covers real-life examples of BMS functionality of practical portable devices such as shavers and cellular phones. Simulations offer the advantage over measurements that less time is needed to gain knowledge of a battery's behaviour in interaction with other parts in a portable device under a wide variety of conditions. This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results. The contents of Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background. Table of ContentsList of abbreviations. List of symbols. Series preface. Preface. 1. Book SynopsisThe aim of this monograph is to present a general method of proving continuity of Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles. The method uses an inductive procedure based on a general, geometric version of the Avalanche Principle. The main assumption required by this method is the availability of appropriate large deviation type estimates for quantities related to the iterates of the base and fiber dynamics associated with the linear cocycle. We establish such estimates for various models of random and quasi-periodic cocycles. Our method has its origins in a paper of M. Goldstein and W. Schlag. Our present work expands upon their approach in both depth and breadth. We conclude this monograph with a list of related open problems, some of which may be treated using a similar approach.Trade Review“The effort of the authors to make this text self-contained and to make the exposition very clear and delightful was successful, making this monograph an excellent contribution for both graduate student and anyone interested in the continuity of Lyapunov Exponents.” (Paulo Varandas, Mathematical Reviews, June, 2018)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Estimates on Grassmann Manifolds.- Abstract Continuity of Lyapunov Exponents.- The Oseledets Filtration and Decomposition.- Large Deviations for Random Cocycles.- Large Deviations for Quasi-Periodic Cocycles.- Further Related Problems.

Book SynopsisSensor networks are an essential component of the Internet of Things (IoT), and Multimedia Sensor Networks (MSNs) are the most important emerging area in sensor networks. However, multimedia sensing is characterized by diversified modes, large volumes of data, considerable heterogeneity, and complex computing, as a result of which the theory and methods for traditional sensor networks can’t be applied to MSNs. Based on the authors’ years of systematic research on related theory and methods, this book provides a comprehensive review of MSNs. The coverage ranges from networked sensing and fusion-based transmission, to route discovery and in-network computing. The book presents the most important scientific discoveries and fundamental theories on MSNs, while also exploring practical approaches and typical applications. Given its scope, it is especially suitable for students, researchers and practitioners interested in understanding scientific problems involved in characterizing multimedia sensing features, revealing the transmission mechanisms of MSNs, and constructing efficient in-network multimedia computing paradigms. In this book, readers will learn essential methods for achieving the optimal deployment of, efficient and reliable transmission, and timely information processing in MSNs.Table of Contents

Book SynopsisThis book highlights the practical aspects of computer modelling and simulation of complex dynamical systems for students. Mechanical systems are considered in the book as representative examples of dynamical systems. Wolfram SystemModeler, in combination with Learning Management System Sakai, is used as an instrument for studying features of various physical and technical phenomena and processes. Each of the presented virtual labs may be considered a stand-alone mini project to enable students to go through all the steps of mathematical modelling and computer simulation—from the problem statement to mathematical and physical analysis of the obtained result. The book is useful for teachers to organize the educational process, allowing gradual monitoring of the learning process and assessment of students’ competencies. It also allows tutors to design individual educational trajectories for students to achieve educational properties. The subject of the book is an extension of activity started by the international team of authors within the InMotion project of the European programme ERASMUS+.Trade Review“The authors went to great effort to produce beautiful figures, with color no less, to aid the reader. The tables are laid out logically, and the discussion for each model is, for the most part straightforward. I wish I could recommend the book … .” (David S.
