Springer Nature Switzerland AG On the Epistemology of Data Science: Conceptual
Book SynopsisThis book addresses controversies concerning the epistemological foundations of data science: Is it a genuine science? Or is data science merely some inferior practice that can at best contribute to the scientific enterprise, but cannot stand on its own? The author proposes a coherent conceptual framework with which these questions can be rigorously addressed. Readers will discover a defense of inductivism and consideration of the arguments against it: an epistemology of data science more or less by definition has to be inductivist, given that data science starts with the data. As an alternative to enumerative approaches, the author endorses Federica Russo’s recent call for a variational rationale in inductive methodology. Chapters then address some of the key concepts of an inductivist methodology including causation, probability and analogy, before outlining an inductivist framework. The inductivist framework is shown to be adequate and useful for an analysis of the epistemological foundations of data science. The author points out that many aspects of the variational rationale are present in algorithms commonly used in data science. Introductions to algorithms and brief case studies of successful data science such as machine translation are included. Data science is located with reference to several crucial distinctions regarding different kinds of scientific practices, including between exploratory and theory-driven experimentation, and between phenomenological and theoretical science. Computer scientists, philosophers and data scientists of various disciplines will find this philosophical perspective and conceptual framework of great interest, especially as a starting point for further in-depth analysis of algorithms used in data science. Trade Review“Readers are taken on a journey where they will discover step-by-step methodologies for data-driven research. Judiciously, each key concept of data science is concisely defined, and examples and the when, why, and how to use them are provided. … I fully recommend it.” (Thierry Edoh, Computing Reviews, February 7, 2023)Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Synchronization of Multi-Agent Systems in the
Book SynopsisThis monograph explores the synchronization of large-scale, multi-agent dynamical systems in the presence of disturbances, delays, and time-varying networks. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing the agents’ actions. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in the existing literature. Divided into two sections, the first part of the book focuses on state synchronization of homogeneous multi-agent systems. The authors consider state synchronization by determining control strategies for both continuous- and discrete-time systems that achieve state synchronization under both full- and partial-state coupling. The chapters that follow examine multi-agent systems with both linear and nonlinear time-varying agents, input-delays for continuous- and discrete-time systems, and communication delays for continuous-time systems. The second part of the book is dedicated to regulated output synchronization of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with linear and nonlinear agents. Both sections of the book include performance considerations in H2- and H-infinity norms in the presence of external disturbances.Research on synchronization of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary, with applications to automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS and high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Synchronization of Multi-Agent Systems in the Presence of Disturbances and Delays will therefore be of interest to upper-level graduate students, researchers, and engineers in industry working on interconnected dynamical systems.Trade Review“This book presents a tangible overview of the theory and application of synchronization in a multi-agent system with an eye on disturbance and time delays. It is self-contained with preliminaries, theorem proofs and references. … This book is accessible to anyone studying systems and control theory with an undergraduate level of mathematics.” (Yilun Shang, Mathematical Reviews, October, 2022)Table of ContentsNotation and preliminaries.- Part I Synchronization of homogeneous systems.- Synchronization of continuous-time linear MAS.- Synchronization of discrete-time linear MAS.- Synchronization of linear MAS subject to actuator saturation.- Synchronization of continuous-time MAS with nonlinear time-varying agents.- Synchronization of continuous-time linear MAS with unknown input delay.- Synchronization of discrete-time linear MAS with unknown input delay.- Synchronization of continuous-time linear MAS with unknown communication delay.- Synchronization of discrete-time linear MAS with unknown communication delay.- Synchronization of linear MAS subject to actuator saturation and unknown input delay.- Synchronization of continuous-time linear time-varying MAS.- Synchronization of continuous-time nonlinear time-varying MAS.- H1 and H2 almost synchronization of continuous-time linear MAS.- Part II Synchronization of heterogeneous systems.- Necessary conditions for synchronization of heterogeneous MAS.- Regulated output synchronization of heterogeneous continuous-time linear MAS.- Regulated output synchronization of heterogeneous continuous-time nonlinear MAS.- Regulated output synchronization of heterogeneous continuous-time linear time-varying MAS.- Exact regulated output synchronization for heterogeneous continuous-time MAS in the presence of disturbances and measurement noise with known frequencies.- H1 almost output synchronization for heterogeneous continuous-time MAS.- H2 almost regulated output synchronization for heterogeneous continuous-time MAS.- Almost output synchronization of heterogeneous continuous-time linear MAS with passive agents.- Synchronization of heterogeneous continuous-/and discrete-time linear MAS with introspective agents.- A special coordinate basis (SCB) of linear multivariable systems.- Squaring down of general MIMO systems to invertible uniform rank systems via pre- and/or post-compensators.- Index.- References.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Control Problems for Conservation Laws with
Book SynopsisConservation and balance laws on networks have been the subject of much research interest given their wide range of applications to real-world processes, particularly traffic flow. This open access monograph is the first to investigate different types of control problems for conservation laws that arise in the modeling of vehicular traffic. Four types of control problems are discussed - boundary, decentralized, distributed, and Lagrangian control - corresponding to, respectively, entrance points and tolls, traffic signals at junctions, variable speed limits, and the use of autonomy and communication. Because conservation laws are strictly connected to Hamilton-Jacobi equations, control of the latter is also considered. An appendix reviewing the general theory of initial-boundary value problems for balance laws is included, as well as an appendix illustrating the main concepts in the theory of conservation laws on networks. Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Boundary Control.- Decentralized Control.- Distributed Control.- Lagrangian Control.- Hamilton-Jacobi Equations.- Appendix A: Balance Laws with Boundary.- Conservation Laws on Networks.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Discrete Dynamics: Basic Theory and Examples
Book SynopsisThis book offers a complete and detailed introduction to the theory of discrete dynamical systems, with special attention to stability of fixed points and periodic orbits. It provides a solid mathematical background and the essential basic knowledge for further developments such as, for instance, deterministic chaos theory, for which many other references are available (but sometimes, without an exhaustive presentation of preliminary notions). Readers will find a discussion of topics sometimes neglected in the research literature, such as a comparison between different predictions achievable by the discrete time model and the continuous time model of the same application. Another novel aspect of this book is an accurate analysis of the way a fixed point may lose stability, introducing and comparing several notions of instability: simple instability, repulsivity, and complete instability. To help the reader and to show the flexibility and potentiality of the discrete approach to dynamics, many examples, numerical simulations, and figures have been included. The book is used as a reference material for courses at a doctoral or upper undergraduate level in mathematics and theoretical engineering.Trade Review“The book is well written, easy to read and has many exciting examples to motivate the results. Therefore, it is a book which deserves to be read.” (José S. Cánovas Peña, Mathematical Reviews, January, 2023)“This quite small book belonging to a series entitled ‘Mathematical Engineering’ is a self-contained introduction to discrete- time systems. Motivated by applications arising from physics, engineering … economics and other natural sciences, it is mainly addressed to students, aiming to show that discrete dynamics deserves its own interest and is not easy to study. … The reviewed book can be considered … as a preliminary study for more complete monographs … .” (Vladimir Răsvan, zbMATH 1492.37001, 2022)Table of ContentsDiscrete dynamical systems.- Stability and attraction.- Bifurcations.- Positive linear systems.

Springer International Publishing AG New Advances in Dependability of Networks and
Book SynopsisThe book consists of papers on selected topics of dependability analysis in computer systems and networks which were discussed during the 17th DepCoS-RELCOMEX conference held in Wrocław, Poland, from June 27th to July 1st, 2022. Their collection will be an interesting source material for scientists, researchers, practitioners and students who are dealing with design, analysis and engineering of computer systems and networks and must ensure their dependable operation. Being probably the most complex technical systems ever engineered by man (and also, the most dynamically evolving ones), organization of contemporary computer systems and networks cannot be interpreted only as a structure built on the base of unreliable technical resources. Their evaluation must take into account a unique blend of interacting people, networks (together with mobile properties, cloud organization, Internet of Everything, etc.) and a large number of users dispersed geographically and constantly producing an unconceivable number of applications. Research methods being continuously developed for dependability analyses apply newest results of artificial and computational intelligence. Selection of papers in this book illustrates broad range of topics, often multi-disciplinary, which is considered in present-day dependability explorations; it also reveals an increasing role of the latest methods based on machine/deep learning and neural networks in these studies.Table of ContentsMeasures of Outlierness in High-Dimensional Data under Correlation of Features - with Application for Open-Set Classification, Szymon Datko, Henryk Maciejewski, Tomasz Walkowiak.- Multiprocessor tasks scheduling - Fuzzy Logic Approach, Dariusz Dorota.- Nonparametric tracking for time-varying nonlinearities using the kernel method, Purva Joshi, Grzegorz Mzyk.- Embedded systems' startup code optimization, Patryk Pankiewicz.- Influence of accelerometer placement on biometric gaitidentification, Aleksander Sawicki.- An Impact of Data Augmentation Techniques on the Robustness of CNNs, Kamil Szyc.- Dual Learning Model for Multiclass Brain Tumor classification, Rohit Thanki, Sanna Kaddoura.

Springer International Publishing AG Roads to Higher Dimensional Polytopic Projects:
Book SynopsisHigh dimensional reference architectures presented here allows confronting and prevailing over the growing complexity of polytopic projects implementations.Such projects should be envisaged giving that conventional systems operations, equipments, methodologies or organizations will reach their limits for self-evolvability in high complexity conditions. Self-evolvable high complexity systems are based on high dimensional polytopic reference architectures.Polytope is the general term of the sequence: point, line, polygon, polyhedron and so on.The polytopic projects are targeting the artificiality, not only for materials where it is well known and applied, but also for biological, cognitive, intelligent and mathematical systems. The book highlights the polytopic projects basic similarity despite the noticeable difference as domains of application. The roads to follow and the algebra of changing roads are emphasized. The book is divided in 9 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the Polytopic Roadmap to 4D and beyond. The role for the dialogue of processes in duality of the non-Aristotelian Logic of Contradiction and of Included Middle is emphasized for different domains. Chapter 2 refers to chemical systems. Supramolecular chemistry, metal organic frameworks, MOF, and reaction networks, are the examples considered in the frame of polytopic chemistry. Chapter 3 refers to biological systems. Biological dynamical hierarchies and quasi-species are the considered case studies. Technological and scientific projects targeting artificiality for cells and viruses are considered. Chapter 4 refers to cognitive systems. Developmental stages, formal and relational concepts analysis, and neural coding are considered here. The roles of the 4D systems of systems of systems and of conceptual 4D-cube are emphasized. Artificiality for cognitive systems is the object of study.Chapter 5 refers to mathematical systems. Modeling levels and the 4D digital twins are discussed. Hopf monoids as tools for the study of combinations and separations, dual graded graphs and V-models are informally presented. Chapter 6 refers to application of formal concept analysis, FCA, for high dimensional separations, nesting and drug delivery. Chapter 7 refers to polytopic engineering systems as multiscale transfer, distributors-collectors, cyclic operations, middle vessel columns, mixing, assembly and designs. Equipments have been characterized using Polytopic Roadmaps and classified by Periodic Tables. Chapter 8 introduces polytopic industry, economy, society and sustainability. Chapter 9 outlines new domains of interest as arts and architecture, transdisciplinarity, complex systems and unity of sciences and engineering.Polytopic Roadmaps are proposed as Method for experts from various fields to synthesize their thinking and capabilities into new projects implementation to face and surpass high complexity. A repetitive finding of this book is that self-evolvability observed in physical systems is based on the same directed sequence of reference architectures as the self-evolvability of concepts in our mind. Continuing to develop the field of self-evolvable systems and presenting the polytopic roadmaps for 4D and beyond advances in ever growing complexity domains, the book will be useful to engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs and students in different branches of production, complex systems sciences and engineering, ecology and applied mathematics.Table of ContentsRoadmap to 4D and beyond.- Cognitive Systems.- Conceptual Systems.- Prospective.- Index.

Springer International Publishing AG Mathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and
Book SynopsisMathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and Ecology provides readers with the mathematical tools needed to understand and use mathematical models and read advanced mathematical biology books. It presents mathematics in biological contexts, focusing on the central mathematical ideas and the biological implications, with detailed explanations. The author assumes no mathematics background beyond elementary differential calculus. An introductory chapter on basic principles of mathematical modeling is followed by chapters on empirical modeling and mechanistic modeling. These chapters contain a thorough treatment of key ideas and techniques that are often neglected in mathematics books, such as the Akaike Information Criterion. The second half of the book focuses on analysis of dynamical systems, emphasizing tools to simplify analysis, such as the Routh-Hurwitz conditions and asymptotic analysis. Courses can be focused on either half of the book or thematically chosen material from both halves, such as a course on mathematical epidemiology. The biological content is self-contained and includes many topics in epidemiology and ecology. Some of this material appears in case studies that focus on a single detailed example, and some is based on recent research by the author on vaccination modeling and scenarios from the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem sets feature linked problems where one biological setting appears in multi-step problems that are sorted into the appropriate section, allowing readers to gradually develop complete investigations of topics such as HIV immunology and harvesting of natural resources. Some problems use programs written by the author for Matlab or Octave; these combine with more traditional mathematical exercises to give students a full set of tools for model analysis. Each chapter contains additional case studies in the form of projects with detailed directions. New appendices contain mathematical details on optimization, numerical solution of differential equations, scaling, linearization, and sophisticated use of elementary algebra to simplify problems.Trade Review“This is a well-written book, highly suitable for applied math undergraduate students.” (Stephanie Abo, Chi-Chung Cheung, Ryth Dasgupta, Pritha Dutta, Shervin Hakimi, Amandeep Kaur, Anita T. Springer International Publishing AG Closed Loop Control and Management: Introduction
Book SynopsisThe block diagrams as engineering means for closed loop control, which have been established by classic control theory for decades, are replaced in the above mentioned book by networks, the signals are replaced by data. It corresponds to the „Industry 4.0“ and to the structure of today’s automatic control systems. Thereby a classic closed loop is treated not isolated from other elements of nowadays automation like bus communication and process logical control, and is completed in proposed book with new control elements, so called data stream managers (DSM). The proposed book treats the control theory systematically like it is done in classical books considering the new concept of data management. The theory is accompanied in the book with examples, exercises with solutions and MATLAB®-simulations.Table of ContentsClassic closed loop control from Heron till now:- Basics of the closed loop management.- Engineering of closed loops.- Mathematical Backgrounds.

Springer International Publishing AG Input-to-State Stability: Theory and Applications
Book SynopsisInput-to-State Stability presents the dominating stability paradigm in nonlinear control theory that revolutionized our view on stabilization of nonlinear systems, design of robust nonlinear observers, and stability of nonlinear interconnected control systems. The applications of input-to-state stability (ISS) are manifold and include mechatronics, aerospace engineering, and systems biology. Although the book concentrates on the ISS theory of finite-dimensional systems, it emphasizes the importance of a more general view of infinite-dimensional ISS theory. This permits the analysis of more general system classes and provides new perspectives on and a better understanding of the classical ISS theory for ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Features of the book include: • a comprehensive overview of the theoretical basis of ISS; • a description of the central applications of ISS in nonlinear control theory; • a detailed discussion of the role of small-gain methods in the stability of nonlinear networks; and • an in-depth comparison of ISS for finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. The book also provides a short overview of the ISS theory for other systems classes (partial differential equations, hybrid, impulsive, and time-delay systems) and surveys the available results for the important stability properties that are related to ISS. The reader should have a basic knowledge of analysis, Lebesgue integration theory, linear algebra, and the theory of ODEs but requires no prior knowledge of dynamical systems or stability theory. The author introduces all the necessary ideas within the book. Input-to-State Stability will interest researchers and graduate students studying nonlinear control from either a mathematical or engineering background. It is intended for active readers and contains numerous exercises of varying difficulty, which are integral to the text, complementing and widening the material developed in the monograph.Table of Contents
