  • The Huguenots of London

Liverpool University Press The Huguenots of London

Book SynopsisSeveral hundred Huguenot refugee artists and craftsmen are recorded as working in London before and after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which marked the height of the persecution of the Protestants in France. This book is an introduction to the range of their artistic contributions, centred on the British metropolis, and the extents of their artistic influence outside London. Huguenots are associated with the London goldsmiths' and silkweaving trades, but their contribution to art education, decorative painting, engraving, sculpture, wood-work, furniture, upholstery, jewellry and watch-making in this period is less well known.Trade Review"An excellent introduction to the subject ... pleasing illustrations of Huguenot craftmanship." • Transcript Verlag The Cultures of Entanglement: On Nonhuman Life

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe symbolic meaning of plants, their relevance for religion and the metaphorical provocations in the order of knowledge, culture and political power underline the role of plants as something more than passive objects. Current theoretical and artistic discourses have been seeking access to the world independently of man by focusing on the nonhuman other. The contributors to this volume examine the historical, philosophical and scientific findings that generate this idea. In what way are such perspectives manifest in contemporary art? Do artists develop a particular approach that enables nonhuman life forms like plants, insects or animals to have an impact?

  • Women, Citizenship, and Sexuality: The

Liverpool University Press Women, Citizenship, and Sexuality: The

Book SynopsisUntil well into the twentieth century, the claims to citizenship of women in the US and in Europe have come through men (father, husband); women had no citizenship of their own. The case studies of three expatriate women (Renée Vivien, Romaine Brooks, and Natalie Barney) illustrate some of the consequences for women who lived independent lives. To begin with, the books traces the way that ideas about national belonging shaped gay male identity in the nineteenth century, before showing that such a discourse was not available to women and lesbians, including the three women who form the core of the book. In addition to questions of sexually non-conforming identity, women's mediated claim to citizenship limited their autonomy in practical ways (for example, they could be unilaterally expatriated). Consequently, the situation of the denizen may have been preferable to that of the citizen for women who lived between the lines. Drawing on the discourse of jurisprudence, the history of the passport, and original archival research on all three women, the books tells the story of women's evolving claims to citizenship in their own right.Trade Review“This book explores the ways in which marginal sexual identities have been expressed through the trope of national identity. • MACK Meat Love: An Ideology of the Flesh

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn an era of climate catastrophe and corporate agribusiness, meat has been decisively made over. Urbanites across the West are called upon to look at the animals we eat, and by looking, learn to treat them with love. We are asked to tenderise our carnal desire for flesh and dignify our relationship with the land. Yet can our appetite for meat be redeemed by this new way of seeing? Can an 'ethical' approach to the farming, sale, and consumption of meat really save both the planet and our souls? Revisiting John Berger's writings on animals and class, Meat Love restores a materialist lens to the politics of carnivorous desire. In this vital essay, Amber Husain deconstructs the beauty, tragedy, and mystery with which our images of meat are embellished, drawing on a range of visual sources from contemporary art and film to Instagram and advertising. Probing the nature of 'love' in contemporary human-animal relations, it casts a critical eye on the visual culture of meat as it gentrifies and mutates, informing, for better or for worse, who we become as political subjects.

  • Cultural Heritage and Mass Atrocities

Getty Trust Publications Cultural Heritage and Mass Atrocities

Book SynopsisA pathbreaking call to halt the intertwined crises of cultural heritage attacks and mass atrocities and mobilize international efforts to protect people and cultures. Intentional destruction of cultural heritage has a long history. Contemporary examples include the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, mosques in Xinjiang, mausoleums in Timbuktu, and Greco-Roman remains in Syria. Cultural heritage destruction invariably accompanies assaults on civilians, making heritage attacks impossible to disentangle from the mass atrocities of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing. Both seek to eliminate people and the heritage with which they identify. Cultural Heritage and Mass Atrocities assembles essays by thirty-eight experts from the heritage, social science, humanitarian, legal, and military communities. Focusing on immovable cultural heritage vulnerable to attack, the volume's guiding framework is the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), a United Nations resolution adopted unanimously in 2005 to permit international intervention against crimes of war or genocide. Based on the three pillars of prevent, react, and rebuild, R2P offers today's policymakers a set of existing laws and international norms that can and--as this book argues--must be extended to the protection of cultural heritage. Contributions consider the global value of cultural heritage and document recent attacks on people and sites in China, Guatemala, Iraq, Mali, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen. Comprehensive sections on vulnerable populations as well as the role of international law and the military offer readers critical insights and point toward research, policy, and action agendas to protect both people and cultural heritage. A concise abstract of each chapter is offered online in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish to facilitate robust, global dissemination of the strategies and tactics offered in this pathbreaking call to action. The free online edition of this publication is available at getty.edu/publications/cultural-heritage-mass-atrocities. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.

Penguin Putnam Inc The Essential Questions

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisJust as the oral histories of people around the world are disappearing amid rapid change, there is a risk that your family''s personal stories, too, will be lost forever. In THE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS, anthropologist Elizabeth Keating helps you to uncover the unique memories of your parents and grandparents and to create lasting connection with them in the process. As you seek to learn more about your family history, how do you get beyond familiar anecdotes and avoid the frustration of oppositional generational attitudes? By asking questions that make the familiar strange, anthropologists are able to see entirely different perspectives and understand new cultures. Drawing on her lifelong work in this field, Keating has developed a set of questions that treat your parents and grandparents not just as the people who raised you, but as individuals of a certain society and time, and as the children, teenagers, and young adults they once were. THE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS helps you to learn about the history of your elders, to see the world through their eyes, and to honour the language they choose to describe their experiences.

Book SynopsisMost artists earn very little. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of aspiring young artists. Do they give to the arts willingly or unknowingly? Governments and other institutions also give to the arts, to raise the low incomes. But their support is ineffective: subsidies only increase the artists’ poverty. The economy of the arts is exceptional. Although the arts operate successfully in the marketplace, their natural affinity is with gift-giving, rather than with commercial exchange. People believe that artists are selflessly dedicated to art, that price does not reflect quality, and that the arts are free. • Oxford University Press Reading for Life

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDavis presents original case-histories of readers to delve into just what reading is and how it works. Each chapter begins with a poem or excerpt which becomes the scene either of a reading-group transcription or of a thought-piece from an interviewed reader to explore therapeutic reading and how culture might impact upon health.Trade ReviewDavis' subjects have often tried many forms of therapy over many years, and he persuasively argues that literature, with its unpredictable and powerful effects, can help people break out of the rote narratives that therapy can inculcate, and make new and transformative discoveries. Davis, a professor of literature and psychology, trains his critical eye just as closely on the transcripts of the group sessions and interviews as on the literary works, many of which are included in part or in full. * Joanna Scutts, Times Literary Supplement *Philip Davis is brave in entering long forbidden waters, immersing himself not only in our emotional life as readers but also in the existential questions we have about ourselves, and about what life is. This is how we ought to be teaching literature, or, at least, how we ought to be making this kind of experience available for those who want it. I was so excited reading it, I could hardly contain myself: Reading for Life is a legitimization of everything that makes literature great. * Jane Tompkins, Professor of English, Emerita, Duke University *Reading for Life deserves to be called transformative. When I was about halfway through Reading for Life, I found myself pulling neglected books off my shelf and reading these rediscovered books with a closer attention to their language and a renewed intensity of response. Reading for Life is a book not only about reading; it has the potential to create a changed reader. * Arthur Frank, Literature & Medicine *Powerful and urgent, Reading for Life by Philip Davis shows how poetry and fiction can make a difference. * Marina Warner, President of the Royal Society of Literature *With its extraordinary mix of literature, neuroscience, history, and case studies, this beautifully written book exemplifies the alchemy that can happen when words come to life on the page. Reading can change the trajectory of a life, which changes our society, which propels our future species. Philip Davis shows us why this is so. * Maryanne Wolf, Director at Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice *

We carry a library of data in our pockets, accessible at any second. We have more information and more goods at our disposal than we know what to do with. This book explores cases of cultural, economic, and political critique levied by the purposeful production and consumption of internet memes. Often images, animated GIFs, or videos are remixed in such a way to incorporate intertextual references, quite frequently to popular culture, alongside a joke or critique of some aspect of the human experience. Book SynopsisWitches and Neighbours is a highly original and unconventional analysis of a fascinating historical phenomenon. Unlike other studies of the subject which focus on the mechanisms of persecution, this book presents a rich picture of witchcraft as an all-pervasive aspect of life in early modern Europe. This book is not available from Blackwell in the United States and the Philippines. A fascinating and accessible account of the central role of witchcraft in early modern Europe. A standard work on the subject of witchcraft now available in a revised edition with an updated bibliography. Presents an unconventional interpretation of the role and influence of witchcraft Argues that witchcraft was as complex and changing as the society of which it formed a vital part. Draws on a range of original sources to vividly illustrate the arguments. Trade Review"In this learned and meticulously researched book, Robin Briggs lays to rest many of the modern myths about the witch craze, without in any way diminishing its horror... Briggs skilfully shows how the myths of witchcraft were linked with fundamental human experiences of pain and anxiety... Lucid and important." Karen Armstrong, The Times "Briggs provides a fascinating psychological insight into the ideological system that produced the trials. To understand them within their own historical context, he argues, is to realize that a belief in the witches' power was neither irrational nor absurd... the evidence from this compelling book suggests that human actions are far more determined by irrational fears than our social selves are willing to accept." • A Hacker Manifesto

Harvard University Press A Hacker Manifesto

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisDrawing on Debord and Deleuze, this book offers a systematic restatement of Marxist thought for the age of cyberspace and globalization. In the widespread revolt against commodified information, Wark sees a utopian promise, beyond property, and a new progressive class, the hacker class, who voice shared interest in a new information commons.Trade ReviewWhat Ken Wark's book does is take us deep into the philosophy of hacking: it gives us a new way of seeing those irreverent folks who play for keeps with digital culture. Think of his book as a lexicon that says "play with digital culture like you would play with DNA--carefully." It's not every day that you get a book that takes you deep into the realm of practical analysis of the ways that we abstract thought and action in search for more kicks on-line, and for almost all aspects of control in digital culture from the top down "Hacker Manifesto" says--this is about exploration, this is about freedom. Inside out, upside down, information always wants to be free, and this is the book that shows us why. -- Paul D. Miller a.k.a. Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid author of Rhythm ScienceOurs is once again an age of manifestos. Wark's book challenges the new regime of property relations with all the epigrammatic vitality, conceptual innovation, and revolutionary enthusiasm of the great manifestos. -- Michael Hardt, co-author of EmpireA Hacker Manifesto is a highly original and provocative book. At a moment in history where we are starved of new political ideas and directions, the clarity with which Wark identifies a new political class is persuasive, and his ability to articulate their interests is remarkable. -- Marcus Boon, author of The Road of ExcessMcKenzie Wark's A Hacker Manifesto might also be called, without too much violence to its argument, The Communist Manifesto 2.0. In essence, it's an attempt to update the core of Marxist theory for that relatively novel set of historical circumstances known as the information age. -- Julian Dibbell, author of Play Money: Diary of a Dubious Proposition[Wark's] ambitious A Hacker Manifesto Googles for signs of hope in this cyber-global-corporate-brute world of ours, and he fixes on the hackers, macro-savvy visionaries from all fields who 'hack' the relationships and meanings the rest of us take for granted. If we hackers--of words, computers, sound, science, etc.--organize into a working, sociopolitical class, Wark argues, then the world can be ours. -- Hua Hsu * Village Voice *Writers, artists, biotechnologists, and software programmers belong to the 'hacker class' and share a class interest in openness and freedom, while the 'vectoralist' and 'ruling classes' are driven to contain, control, dominate, and own. Wark crafts a new analysis of the tension between the underdeveloped and 'overdeveloped' worlds, their relationships to surplus and scarcity, and the drive toward human actualization. -- Michael Jensen * Chronicle of Higher Education *Infuriating and inspiring in turn, A Hacker Manifesto will spawn a thousand theses, and just maybe spawn change. -- Mike Holderness * New Scientist *McKenzie Wark's A Hacker Manifesto is a remarkable and beautiful book: cogent, radical, and exhilarating, a politico-aesthetic call to arms for the digital age...Whether or not A Hacker Manifesto succeeds in rousing people to action, it's a book that anyone who's serious about understanding the changes wrought by digital culture will have to take into consideration. -- Steven Shaviro * Resource Center for Cyberculture Studies *McKenzie Wark's aptly named and timely A Hacker Manifesto is a remarkably original and passionate clarion call to question the increasing commodification of information in our digital age. The book is elegantly designed and written in a highly aphoristic style that evokes the grand essay tradition of Theodor Adorno, Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin and Friedrich Nietzsche...A Hacker Manifesto is indispensable reading for anyone who wishes to understand the multiplying complexities of digital culture. It is itself an example of hacking: forging a new world out of the ruins of the present one. -- John Conomos * Sydney Morning Herald *The larger argument may not be novel (it's plagued by the same flaws as Marx's original utopian blueprint), but this updated version of that vision provides a clever repudiation of the commodification of art, ingenuity, and the creative impulses--and a useful lens through which to examine the complexities involved in the ownership of ideas in this digital age. * Ruminator Review *A Hacker Manifesto is the Big Picture of not only where we are in the 'information age,' but where we're going as well. Adopting the [epigrammatic] style of Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle, as well as updating its ideas, Ken Wark establishes so-called 'knowledge workers' as an unrecognized social class: 'the hacker class.' Wark also updates Marx and Engels, Deleuze and Guattari, Nietzsche, and a host of others...Far from just being the story of 'us versus them' class struggles, Ken Wark's book is far more complex: It tackles many issues, historical, emergent, and emerging. Opening up new discursive spaces where none existed before, A Hacker Manifesto might well turn out to be one of the most important books of the new century. -- Roy Christopher * Frontwheeldrive.com *A Hacker Manifesto will yield some provocative ideas and real challenges to a world in which everything is commodified. -- Eric J. Iannelli * Times Literary Supplement *Wark's ideas about open-source culture, environmentalism, and the politics of information exchange are fresh enough to merit real attention. A Hacker Manifesto...might incite a genuinely important conversation about the shape of the future. -- Peter Ritter * Rain Taxi *

Book SynopsisA critical introduction to discourse analysis as it is practised in a variety of different disciplines today, from linguistics to sociology. The author shows how concern with the analysis of discourse can be combined with an interest in broader problems of social analysis and social change.Trade Review'Norman Fairclough's new book presents an original argument for a critical, text-oriented form of discourse analysis. He writes in an admirably lucid way about some very complex issues. It is a book to which those interested in the critical analysis of discourse and ideology should pay close attention. Moreover, students will benefit from the clearly presented examples, which Fairclough uses to show the methods of critical discourse analysis.' Michael Billig, Temple University 'This book is an excellent example of applied linguistics: acute observations and analyses of changing language use in the real social world - one of the few attempts to show the systematic relation between texts and institutions.' Michael Stubbs, University of Trier 'Fairclough has a sophisticated linguistic analysis and an explicit political agenda. Fairclough has written a strong book. He is clear and honest about his motivations, and straightforward in his findings. Book SynopsisThis open access book presents an account of five teacher educators who, over a two-year period, undertook a research project with five teachers of languages other than English in pre-secondary schools in New Zealand. Their collaborative aim was to develop students’ intercultural capability in the context of learning a new language. The school participants were typical of many in New Zealand’s pre-secondary sector; the teachers had limited language-teaching experience and limited prior knowledge of how to develop the intercultural dimension in their language classrooms, and the students were largely at the beginning stages of learning a new language. The book discusses the findings obtained using a range of data collection methods, including classroom observations, reflective interviews with teachers, and focus groups with students. It documents instances of breakthrough and growth for teachers and students and reveals the problems and tensions. Lastly, it reflects on the lessons learned in the course of this project and speculates on the roles that teacher education needs to play if the goal of intercultural capability is to be better achieved in language classrooms, both in New Zealand and internationally. Of interest to a wide range of stakeholders in the area of education, the book allows readers to gain an understanding of the opportunities of working with teachers through an action–research model, alongside the challenges that this brings and ways in which intercultural capability may be strengthened.Table of ContentsBeginning the journeys towards intercultural capability.- Studies on the intercultural dimension across the globe.- The intercultural dimension in the New Zealand language teaching context.- Introducing the two-year study.- Journeys towards intercultural capability: The students’ voices.- Journeys towards intercultural capability: The teachers’ voices.- Journeys towards intercultural capability: The researchers’ voices.- Journeys towards intercultural capability: Retrospective reflections.

What is the role of the media in creating, endorsing and sustaining moral panics? The term `moral panic' is frequently applied to sudden outbreaks of concern about social problems. Chas Critcher critically evaluates the usefulness of moral panic models for understanding how politicians, the public and pressure groups come to recognise apparent new threats to the social order, and he scrutinizes the role of the media, especially the popular press. Book SynopsisWhile fat sexual bodies are highly visible as vehicles for stigma, there has been a lack of scholarly research addressing this facet of contemporary body politics. Fat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism seeks to rectify this, bringing debates about fat sex into the academic arena and providing a much-needed critical space for voices from across the spectrum of theory and activism. It examines the intersection of fat, sex and sexuality within a contemporary cultural landscape that is openly hostile towards fat people and their perceived social and aesthetic transgressions. Acknowledging and engaging with some of the innovative work being done by artists, activists, and academics around the issue of fat sex, this collection both challenges preconceptions regarding fatness and sexuality, but also critiques and debates various aspects of the fat activist approach. It draws on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, bringing together work from the UK, US, Europe, and Australia to offer a wide-ranging examination of the issues of size, sex, and sexuality. A cutting-edge exploration not only of fat sex, but of identity politics, neoliberalism and contemporary body activism in general, Fat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism will be of interest to scholars of sociology, cultural studies, geography, porn studies and literary studies working on questions of gender, sexuality and the body.Trade Review’Fat sex - what a wonderful topic! What a great addition to the scholarly discipline of fat studies, which has not focused much at all on theorizing fat sexuality. Women in particular are made to feel ashamed of their looks and body parts, so fat sex is a feminist issue. This anthology discusses the meaning of sexual pleasure in fat communities, integrating activism and scholarship - a great read.’ Esther Rothblum, San Diego State University, USA and editor of Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society ’Fat Sex is essential reading for academics and activists, being both scholarly and accessible it makes a significant contribution to Fat Studies and Sexuality Studies. More importantly, it refuses to make the obese anonymous, abstract and abject; this is a rare book where fat people speak autonomously and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of their own lives.’ Charlotte Cooper, psychotherapist, UK ’There is much to recommend Fat Sex: its carefully considered arguments about fat theory and activism are characterized by a great deal of ideological variety, and it helpfully expands the conversation from its US-centered core. This text is essential for readers seeking to better understand the politics of fat representation and the representation of fat politics.’ Kathleen LeBesco, Marymount Manhattan College, USATable of ContentsFat Sex: New Directions in Theory and Activism
