Book SynopsisIn this second edition, historians Chuck Parsons and Donaly E. Brice present a complete picture of N. O. Reynolds (1846–1922), a Texas Ranger who brought a greater respect for the law in Central Texas. Reynolds began as a sergeant in famed Company D, Frontier Battalion in 1874. He served honorably during the Mason County ""Hoo Doo"" War and was chosen to be part of Major John B. Jones's escort, riding the frontier line. In 1877 he arrested the Horrells, who were feuding with their neighbors, the Higgins party, thus ending their Lampasas County feud. Shortly thereafter he was given command of the newly formed Company E of Texas Rangers. Also in 1877 the notorious John Wesley Hardin was captured; N.O. Reynolds was given the responsibility to deliver Hardin to trial in Comanche, return him to a safe jail during his appeal, and then escort him safely to the Huntsville penitentiary.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Great Telecoms Swindle: How the collapse of
Book SynopsisWith the demise of WorldCom amidst a flurry of accounting scandals dominating the front pages, and following hotly in the footsteps of the equally spectacular downfall of other telecoms giants including Global Crossing and Lucent Technologies in recent months, The Great Telecoms Swindle investigates the reasons behind a roller coaster ride that is set to continue for some time yet. Vivendi, France Telecom, Vodaphone and numerous other corporate behemoths all face testing and possibly life-threatening times that will demand radical solutions in the coming months. The telecoms story is set to run and run and investors are set to continue to feel the heat. For a market that, as little as eighteen months ago amounted to a license to print money, the question 'what went wrong?' must urgently be asked. How could companies like Cisco Systems go from being paragons of virtue in the new corporate age to near pariahs embroiled in a welter of financial difficulties in such a short space of time? Is 'next generation telecoms' nothing more than a myth, a triumph of hype over reality? Tracking the rise and fall of the telecoms market from deregulation in the eighties through the advent of the mobile world, and on to broadband, 3G, and the mobile Internet the authors uncover what fuelled the boom, where the mistakes were made (by industry players and investors alike), and what if anything the future holds. Taking the lid off the headlines, The Great Telecoms Swindle reveals and examines the real problems in the telecoms market today, and exposes an industry that is entirely unsure of its own future value proposition.Trade Review"…it is a great read…" (Irish Independent, 13 March 2003) "…there is an important point to be made…" (Financial Director, 1 April 2003) "…A highly readable summary of the global boom, why it happened and the way in which it unfolded…Well worth a read…" (Global Turnaround, April 2003) "…A good bit of catch up reading…whom the peace of change has been to much…" (Teleworker, June 2003)Table of ContentsPreface Introduction. 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Criminalisation of Fantasy Material
Book SynopsisThis book addresses the criminalisation of sexually explicit material depicting or describing fictitious characters who appear to be children. It is the first book of its kind to specifically examine the expansion of the law to include fictional representations of children, focusing on the law in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The author explores the potential criminalisation of comics and subgenres of manga that frequently depict childlike characters in a sexual context. Of course, the need to protect children from harm outweighs freedom of expression and the right to privacy; however, this argument is complicated by the material being purely fictional. Does prohibiting the fictional representation of minors interfere with individual freedoms? Based on a detailed socio-legal study, this book extensively analyses literature and pertinent theories of criminalisation, such as the Harm Principle, Offense Principle, and Legal Moralism. The boTrade Review"Al-Alosi presents a thought-provoking, timely, eloquent and detailed examination of the criminalisation of fantasy material. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the immediate concern of child exploitation and the question of how we interpret and set the limits of individual human ‘rights’ when faced with the need to protect those who may be harmed".Associate Professor Dr Tony Krone, University of Canberra (Australia). "This book provides a thought-provoking examination of the contemporary regulation of sexually explicit representations of children. Al-Alosi presents a nuanced analysis that thoroughly challenges the ways in which we approach the regulation of explicit material and understand its harms, or lack thereof. This book unsettled my own thinking around the issue and provides timely, original, and provocative contribution". Dr Bianca Fileborn, School of Social Sciences, University of New South Wales.Based on a comprehensive analysis of fantasy crime, this book asks fundamental questions about how we conceive of, and prosecute, sexually explicit material portraying children. This thought-provoking work provides a substantial contribution to the debate.Professor Alex Steel, Faculty of Law, University of New South WalesTable of Contents1: Foreword ; 2: Acknowledgements; 3: Chapter 1: Introduction; 4: Chapter 2: Types of potentially criminal fantasy material; 5: Chapter 3: Legislative frameworks dealing with fantasy material; 6: Chapter 4: Critiquing the law criminalising fantasy material; 7: Chapter 5: Perspectives on fantasy material; 8: Chapter 6: Overview of theories of criminalisation; 9: Chapter 7: Fantasy material as a matter of harm; 10: Chapter 8: Fantasy material as a matter of offensiveness and morality; 11: Chapter 9: Final insights on the criminalisation of fantasy material; 12: Index

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1963, Eliot Asinof''s Eight Men Out has become a timeless classic of a scandalous world series. The headlines proclaimed the 1919 fix of the World Series and attempted cover-up as the most gigantic sporting swindle in the history of America! Eliot Asinof has reconstructed the entire scene-by-scene story of the fantastic scandal in which eight Chicago White Sox players arranged with the nation''s leading gamblers to throw the Series in Cincinnati. Mr. Asinof vividly describes the tense meetings, the hitches in the conniving, the actual plays in which the Series was thrown, the Grand Jury indictment, and the famous 1921 trial. Moving behind the scenes, he perceptively examines the motives and backgrounds of the players and the conditions that made the improbable fix all too possible. Here, too, is a graphic picture of the American underworld that managed the fix, the deeply shocked newspapermen who uncovered the story, and the war-exhaust

Fulcrum Inc.,US Rebuilding Justice: Civil Courts in Jeopardy and
Book SynopsisOver the past several decades, the civil justice process has become alarmingly expensive, politicized, and lengthy. Though the court system lies at the heart of American democracy, it often does not meet the legitimate needs of the people, resulting in a rift between citizens and their own legal system. With a system that hasn't seen major reform since 1938, it's inevitable that there are shortcomings and misunderstandings. The situation is precarious, but not hopeless. In Rebuilding Justice, Rebecca Love Kourlis and Dirk Olin illuminate why the courts are critical and how they are being eroded, defaced, and undermined. While covering complex issues such as civil justice reform, judicial selection and performance evaluation, and domestic relations, Kourlis and Olin propose practical solutions to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and integrity of America's civil courts. An important portrait of the American judicial system, Rebuilding Justice is a call to action for all Americans to take the steps necessary to fix, support, and protect this crucial cornerstone of our democracy.Trade Review"There is, in my experience, an increasing mistrust of the judiciary and courts... I think this really is fixable.
