Rowman & Littlefield Americas Sherlock Holmes
Book SynopsisWilliam Burns is best known as America's Sherlock Holmes' and became director at the Bureau of Investigation, to be immediately followed by J. Edgar Hoover. But before he became director, Burns had a long, highly publicized career as a government detective for the Secret Service, then as the head of the famed Burns International Detective Agency, which he founded after leaving government service. These successes encouraged Burns to start his own agency and he successfully competed with his hated rival, the Pinkerton Detective Agency. He was a public hero for many years (except among labor union men who remembered his questionable tactics in the notorious McNamara case involving the bombing of the Los Angeles Times). But to the general populace, he was a white knight protecting the public interest until he disgraced his government office.

Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co ,U.S. Criminal Investigation: A Practitioner's Approach
Book SynopsisA major difference between Criminal Investigation: A Practitioner's Approach by Ernie Dorling and many of the other fine introductory books on criminal investigation is that this book aims to aid the student in walking and building the foundation of basic knowledge necessary to pursue a more advanced study of this topic.Criminal Investigation: A Practitioner's Approach takes a unique approach to teaching the subject of criminal investigation. Written in quasinovel format, students will learn the basic principles of criminal investigation through character dialogue. At the end of each Chapter, there are, in most cases, questions for discussion and exercises. The exercises are designed to have the students inject themselves into the investigation by completing certain tasks that may or may not further the investigation.Criminal Investigation: A Practitioner's Approach guides students through an analytical thinking process both through the dialogue of its characters and through the Discussion Questions and Exercises found at the end of each Chapter. In most cases, these discussion questions allow the student and instructor to delve more deeply into the evidence and the case being presented. The exercises, in a number of instances, allow the student to actually inject themselves into the investigative process in order to move the investigation along. Hopefully, the students and instructors will find this approach to be one that makes learning fun.

Book SynopsisA NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2020 ‘The powerful story of a woman who was ahead of her time’ Mishal Husain, presenter at BBC News 'Terrific and necessary' Sonia Faleiro 'This book is brilliant and terrifying' Meena Kandasamy _________________________ A beautiful woman in winged eyeliner and a low-cut top lies on a bed urging her favourite cricketer to win the next match. In another post, she pouts at the camera from a hot tub. She posts a selfie with a cleric, wearing his cap at a jaunty angle. Her posts are viewed millions of times and the comments beneath them are full of hate. As her notoriety grows, the comments made about her on national talk shows are just as vitriolic. They call her Pakistan's Kim Kardashian, they say she'll do anything for attention. When she's murdered, they're transfixed by the footage of her body. Drawing on interviews and in-depth research, Sanam Maher pieces together Qandeel's life from the village where she grew up in the backwaters of rural Pakistan, to her stint in a women's shelter after escaping her marriage, to her incarnation as a social media sensation and the Muslim world's most unlikely feminist icon.Trade ReviewA breakthrough book, A Woman Like Her bracingly illuminates an increasingly global if yet under-covered phenomenon: the tragic collision between the forged selves of social media and the brute realities of ordinary life. It also describes, with rare intimacy, some profound cultural tumult in a society that is largely known for its political dramas -- Pankaj MishraThis fascinating portrait of Qandeel Baloch, Pakistan’s first big female internet sensation, is also a skillfully reported account of a country in which conservative mores conflict with the pace of social change, and in which women all too often pay the price * New York Times, Books of the Year 2020 *A terrific achievement. Sanam Maher’s sensitive, nuanced portrait restores humanity, in all its complexity, to her subject -- Olivia Sudjic, author of SympathyWritten without judgement, without pandering, without reducing its subject to a stereotype, this book is brilliant and terrifying -- Meena Kandasamy, author of the Women’s Prize shortlisted When I Hit YouA book about killing that tells us how we live now. Sanam Maher has her ear to the ground and a storyteller's voice that is intimate and yet soars to the skies. -- Mohammed HanifIn her excavation of the life of the defiant, glamorous Qandeel Baloch, Sanam Maher has put out the highest calibre of investigative journalism, written with tragedy, poetry and passion befitting of its subject -- Molly Crabapple, author of Drawing BloodOnly one of Pakistan's finest young writers could carry weighty themes like honour, fame, and violence with such deliberation and poise -- Fatima BhuttoQandeel was a marvellous blaze. She set our dark world on fire and made enough light to expose the hypocrisies of Pakistan's pious patriarchy. Pen & Sword Books Ltd Investigating the Almost Perfect Murders: The
Book SynopsisAnthony Nott joined the Metropolitan Police in 1971, which was a very different world from that of today. He describes his early experiences in the Met, including the arrest of a man for murdering a prostitute in Kings Cross. He was present when a fellow police officer was almost stabbed to death and witnessed an act of police brutality when he interrupted the beating of a petty criminal in a cell by the CID. He transferred to the county force of Dorset in 1976 where, not long after his promotion to detective sergeant, he engaged in what would be a ten-year long investigation into the disappearance of Monica Taylor and the eventual conviction of her husband, Peter, for what was almost the perfect murder - Monica's remains were never found. He then recounts a series of murder cases in which he was involved from the murder and decapitation of a woman in Bournemouth and the random killing of another, to the extremely violent killing of a gay man in Boscombe Gardens, Bournemouth, in which it took two years to bring the killers to justice. While a detective chief inspector in Bournemouth in 1994, the chance visit of a detective sergeant from Guernsey, who was investigating a life insurance fraud, led to the re-opening of a missing person enquiry from eight years earlier, and resulted in the conviction of Russell Causley for murder, despite his wife's body never being recovered. This book provides an insight into the methodical and transparent way in which the police investigate complicated crimes from riots to the almost perfect murders.Trade ReviewThis is the autobiography of Anthony Nott, a detective who investigated serious crimes, including many murders and a mercy killing. Policing has changed considerably since the 1970s when Nott began his career, in the wake of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act following miscarriages of justice and a loss of trust in the police service. Each story is compelling and there are good details. One involves a criminal trial concerning events surrounding a football match. After the trial, members of the bar presented the trial judge with a signed match ball. On another occasion, a tramp was accidentally given the police station keys when he was released. Fortunately, he returned them. We also learn what police dream about and how the writer met a young Jon Snow. It is interesting how cases were pursued doggedly over many years and how the outcome was often helped by good luck alongside hard work. Solicitors do not feature much in the book – although the CPS and the bar do. Their roles are respected but do not seem to trouble the police much. The book gives an insight into the mind of the police officer and the criminal. How do you commit the perfect crime and get away with it? I suppose no one would know about the perfect crime as it would be undiscovered, but many people have tried and nearly got away with it. 4 out of 5 Stars.; - David Pickup, The Law Society Gazette

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Scotland Yard's Murder Squad
Book SynopsisIn 1906 the Metropolitan Police Commissioner was asked by the Home Office to make available skilled investigators for murder enquiries nationwide as few constabularies had sufficiently skilled - or indeed, any - detectives. Thus was born the Reserve Squad, or Murder Squad, as it later became known. Despite a reluctance by some forces to call upon The Met, the Murder Squad has proved its effectiveness on countless occasions with its remit extended to British territories overseas. A particularly sensitive case was the murder of a local superintendent on St Kitts and Nevis. A former Scotland Yard detective, the Author uses his contacts and experiences to get the inside track on a gruesome collection of infamous cases. Child murderers, a Peer's butler, a King's housekeeper, gangsters, jealous spouses and the notorious mass murderer Dr Bodkin Adams compete for space in this spine-chilling and gripping book which is testament to the Murder Squad's skills and ingenuity - and the evil of the perpetrators. Brimming with gruesome killings, this highly readable book proves that there is no substitute for old fashioned footwork and instinct.

Pan Macmillan The Murders at White House Farm: Jeremy Bamber
Book SynopsisThe Sunday Times bestseller and the definitive story behind the ITV factual drama White House Farm, about the horrific killings that took place in 1985. On 7 August 1985, Nevill and June Bamber, their daughter Sheila and her two young sons Nicholas and Daniel were discovered shot to death at White House Farm in Essex. The murder weapon was found on Sheila's body, a bible lay at her side. All the windows and doors of the farmhouse were secure, and the Bambers' son, 24-year-old Jeremy, had alerted police after apparently receiving a phone call from his father, who told him Sheila had 'gone berserk' with the gun. It seemed a straightforward case of murder-suicide, but a dramatic turn of events was to disprove the police's theory. In October 1986, Jeremy Bamber was convicted of killing his entire family in order to inherit his parents' substantial estates. He has always maintained his innocence.Drawing on interviews and correspondence with many of those closely connected to the events – including Jeremy Bamber – and a wealth of previously unpublished documentation, Carol Ann Lee brings astonishing clarity to a complex and emotive case. She describes the years of rising tension in the family that culminated in the murders, and provides clear insight into the background of each individual and their relationships within the family unit.Scrupulously fair in its analysis, The Murders at White House Farm is an absorbing portrait of a family, a time and a place, and a gripping account of one of Britain's most notorious crimes.Table of ContentsSection - i: Family Tree Section - ii: Floor Plans of White House Farm, 7 August 1985 Section - iii: Preface Chapter - 1: Prologue Chapter - 2: Sowing 29 December 1891 to 31 December 1984 Chapter - 3: Growth Chapter - 4: Harvest Chapter - 5: Winter Section - 6: Epilogue Section - iv: Appendix I: A reconstruction of events at White House Farm on 7 August 1985 Section - v: Appendix II: A message from Colin Caffell Acknowledgements - vi: Acknowledgements Section - vii: Bibliography Section - viii: Notes and References Index - ix: Index

Book SynopsisTen percent of the world’s population lives on islands, but until now the place and space characteristics of islands in criminological theory have not been deeply considered. This book moves beyond the question of whether islands have more, or less, crime than other places, and instead addresses issues of how, and by whom, crime is defined in island settings, which crimes are policed and visible, and who is subject to regulation. Fulcrum Inc.,US Rebuilding Justice: Civil Courts in Jeopardy and
Book SynopsisOver the past several decades, the civil justice process has become alarmingly expensive, politicized, and lengthy. Though the court system lies at the heart of American democracy, it often does not meet the legitimate needs of the people, resulting in a rift between citizens and their own legal system. With a system that hasn't seen major reform since 1938, it's inevitable that there are shortcomings and misunderstandings. The situation is precarious, but not hopeless. In Rebuilding Justice, Rebecca Love Kourlis and Dirk Olin illuminate why the courts are critical and how they are being eroded, defaced, and undermined. While covering complex issues such as civil justice reform, judicial selection and performance evaluation, and domestic relations, Kourlis and Olin propose practical solutions to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and integrity of America's civil courts. An important portrait of the American judicial system, Rebuilding Justice is a call to action for all Americans to take the steps necessary to fix, support, and protect this crucial cornerstone of our democracy.Trade Review"There is, in my experience, an increasing mistrust of the judiciary and courts... I think this really is fixable. I think the civil justice process could be fixed to somesignificant extent in the next five to 10 years, says Kourlis." — "Author believes American justice system is broken but fixable," December 22, 2011, by Bill Mears, CNN Supreme Court Producer.

Book SynopsisIn this second edition, historians Chuck Parsons and Donaly E. Brice present a complete picture of N. O. Reynolds (1846–1922), a Texas Ranger who brought a greater respect for the law in Central Texas. Reynolds began as a sergeant in famed Company D, Frontier Battalion in 1874. He served honorably during the Mason County ""Hoo Doo"" War and was chosen to be part of Major John B. Jones's escort, riding the frontier line. In 1877 he arrested the Horrells, who were feuding with their neighbors, the Higgins party, thus ending their Lampasas County feud. Shortly thereafter he was given command of the newly formed Company E of Texas Rangers. Also in 1877 the notorious John Wesley Hardin was captured; N.O. Reynolds was given the responsibility to deliver Hardin to trial in Comanche, return him to a safe jail during his appeal, and then escort him safely to the Huntsville penitentiary.

Encounter Books,USA Assume Nothing: Encounters with Assassins, Spies,
Book SynopsisCuriosity led Edward Epstein to investigate some of the greatest political mysteries of our time, such as the JFK assassination in Dallas, the Vatican banking scandal in Rome, and the diamond cartel in South Africa. Seeking more information, he often found himself a fly on the wall at the highest reaches of the establishment, observing how presidents, tycoons, bankers, and media moguls secretly greased the wheels of power. This memoir recounts his life as a pursuer of lost truths. Some accuse Epstein of being a conspiracist, but that is incorrect. He is a puzzle solver. Instead of accepting the received wisdom, he searches for the missing pieces of the picture, such as the autopsy photographs of President John F. Kennedy that were kept from the investigation conducted by the Warren Commission. Finding suppressed or overlooked evidence may result in overturning an established narrative, as happened with the publication of Inquest, Epstein’s book about the official probe into the JFK assassination. But that is very different from looking for a conspiracy. Sometimes, Epstein’s work has in fact uncovered a deep conspiracy, as with the world diamond cartel. Other times, it has discredited belief in a conspiracy, as when he delved into the murders of numerous Black Panthers. After his findings were published in the New Yorker, newspapers including the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times issued editorial apologies for their own reporting on the murders, which had suggested that an FBI conspiracy was behind them.Epstein’s primary interest has never been to advance an agenda, but rather to spot gaps in the conventional narrative and fill them in. Assume Nothing is the story of a lifelong quest for missing puzzle pieces, and also a story of self-actualization. Trade Review“What’s seriously amazing is to get into the mind of one of the world’s best investigative journalists. The Warren Commission chapters are utterly riveting, and one marvels at the way Epstein insinuates his way into getting so many important scoops. Assume Nothing should be taught in every journalism school.” —Tina Brown, former editor of the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Newsweek "Edward Jay Epstein’s autobiography Assume Nothing serves up one engaging chapter after another on the personalities he has met, befriended, dated, or investigated over the course of his career as academic, author, and reporter. The cast of characters that moved through Epstein’s life is head-spinning—Vladimir Nabokov, Barbara Streisand, James Angleton, Allan Bloom, Pat Moynihan, Earl Warren, Hannah Arendt, and Donald Trump, to name a few. Assume Nothing is not only an entertaining tale of the writer’s life but also a personal chronicle of an era." —James Piereson, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author of Shattered Consensus: The Rise and Decline of America's Postwar Political Order “With seamless access to some of the key players of our time, Edward Jay Epstein helped define the great age of journalism. His memoir Assume Nothing puts to shame the all-too-frequent practice of deferring to a standard narrative. Ever since he exploded the illusion that the Warren Commission had done a thorough investigation of the John F. Kennedy assassination—which he accomplished while still a senior at Cornell in 1960—Epstein has brilliantly challenged some of the most wrong-headed and tenacious myths of our credulous era. Epstein is a national treasure.” —Michael Wolff, author of Fire and Fury “Assume Nothing is an astonishing, delightful, and unique memoir by investigative icon Edward Jay Epstein. His unmatched investigations have taken him into the worlds of espionage, diamonds, cartels, and Hollywood, and he now reveals his own secrets of how he got his jaw-dropping scoops.”—Shelby Coffey, former editor of the Los Angeles Times “Edward Jay Epstein is the man who knew everybody—from Vladimir Nabokov to Richard Nixon. His extraordinary memoir is the cavalcade of our era.”—Sidney Blumenthal, former aide to President Bill Clinton

Intersentia Ltd Inside Police Custody: An Empirical Account of
Book SynopsisThis empirical study of the procedural rights of suspects in four EU jurisdictions - France, Scotland, the Netherlands and England and Wales - focuses on three of the procedural rights set out in the EU Roadmap for strengthening the procedural rights of suspected or accused persons in criminal proceedings - the right to interpretation and translation; the right to information and the letter of rights; and the right to legal assistance before and during police interrogation. In order to examine how these procedural rights operate in practice, the authors spent between two and five months in eight field sites across the four jurisdictions. During this time they observed lawyers and police officers during the period of police custody; examined case records; observed lawyer-client consultations; and attended suspect interrogations. Furthermore, they conducted 75 interviews with police officers, lawyers and accredited legal representatives. In addition to producing and analysing empirical data, the authors have developed training guidelines for lawyers and police officers involved in the police detention process for use across the EU. The project team also produced a series of recommendations for legislative and policy changes designed to ensure better enforcement of the EU procedural rights' instruments that are envisaged in the Stockholm Programme. The was carried out by the Universities of Maastricht, Warwick and the West of England, together with JUSTICE. Avon and Somerset Police and the Open Society Justice Initiative were also collaborators on the project.Table of ContentsPREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS BIOGRAPHIES LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS POLICE DETENTION TIMELINE CHAPTER 1 INSIDE POLICE CUSTODY: THE AIMS OF THE RESEARCH AND THE NORMATIVE FRAMEWORK 1. Intersentia Ltd Interrogating Young Suspects I: Procedural
Book SynopsisThe vulnerability of juvenile suspects concerns all phases of proceedings but is probably greatest during interrogations in the investigation stage. These early interrogations often constitute the juvenile suspects' first contact with law enforcement authorities during which they are confronted with many difficult questions and decisions. Therefore, the juvenile suspect should already at this stage be provided with an adequate level of procedural protection. The research project 'Protecting Young Suspects in Interrogations' underlying this volume, sprung from the observation that the knowledge of the existing level of procedural protection of juvenile suspects throughout the European Union is limited. More specifically, there is very little knowledge of what actually happens when juvenile suspects are being interrogated. The research project aims to fill at least part of this gap by shedding more light on the existing procedural rights for juveniles during interrogations in five EU Member States representing different systems of juvenile justice (Belgium, England and Wales, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands). In doing so, it intends to identify legal and empirical patterns to improve the effective protection of the juvenile suspect. The project is a joint effort of Maastricht University, Warwick University, Antwerp University, Jagiellonian University and Macerata University in cooperation with Defence for Children and PLOT Limburg. The present volume contains the results of the first part of the research project: a legal comparative study into existing legal procedural safeguards for juvenile suspects during interrogation in the five selected Member States. The country reports incorporated in this volume provide for an in-depth analysis of the existing rules and safeguards applicable during the interrogation of juvenile suspects. On the basis of these findings a transversal analysis is carried out in the final chapter, which is dedicated to the identification of common patterns with a view to harmonising the systems and improving the protection of juvenile suspects' rights. Part 2 and 3 of the research project (empirical research consisting of observations of recorded interrogations and focus group interviews) and a final merging of the legal and empirical findings resulting in a proposal for European minimum rules and best practice on the protection of juvenile suspects during interrogation will be published in a separate, second volume ('Interrogating Young Suspects: Procedural Safeguards from an Empirical Perspective').The book is intended for academics, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers working in the area of juvenile justice and interrogation.

Royal Society of Chemistry Poisons and Poisonings: Death by Stealth
Book SynopsisIt is London in the 1890s. A young woman has just taken a dose of a tonic she’s been given in the belief that it will improve her complexion. About ten minutes pass and she starts to experience breathing difficulties. Another minute and she collapses. Mercifully, death arrives but the poison has not yet finished, for the process of rigor mortis has set in with unusual speed. Her body is frozen into a rigid and contorted mass. This is the horror of strychnine, the nastiest of poisons. Despite knowing all the dreadfulness of this poison, Dr Thomas Neill Cream, the Lambeth Poisoner, used it to kill several prostitutes. And who knows how many other victims experienced the horror of strychnine, for it was by no means an uncommon poison. Today, there may well be more poisons available to the individual than ever before, but there are also advances in medical examination and forensic analysis that increase the likelihood of the poisoner being caught. This book will examine poisons, both natural and man-made menaces, and cases based on a particular poison as well as information about how forensic analysis is conducted. Appealing to scientists and non-scientists alike, this enthralling book will entertain and educate and bring the reader up to date with how important chemical analysis is in crime detection.Trade Review"is outstanding...gives me a copious number of interesting stories that I can relay to my classes to connect chemistry to the “real world”...has a cornucopia of stories that would appeal to any chemist. Based on meticulous research, Giovanni Catelli builds a compelling case that the 46-year-old French Algerian Nobel laureate was the victim of premeditated murder: he was silenced by the KGB. The Russians had a motive: Camus had campaigned tirelessly against the Soviet crushing of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, and vociferously supported the awarding of the Nobel Prize to the dissident novelist Boris Pasternak, which enraged Moscow. Sixty years after Camus’ death, Catelli takes us back to a murky period in the Cold War. He probes the relationship between Camus and Pasternak, the fraught publication of Doctor Zhivago, the penetration of France by Soviet spies, and the high price paid by those throughout Europe who resisted the USSR.Trade Review'Mr. Catelli's case is compelling ... his book provides a clear and useful window into the currents that political writers were forced to navigate during the Cold War.' -- Wall Street Journal‘An investigation into the astonishing claim that the Nobel prize winner was killed by the Soviet secret police.’ -- The Sunday Times‘Published in English for the first time, the Italian poet and historian Giovanni Catelli argues that Camus, author of the existential masterpiece "The Stranger", was murdered by the Soviet security agency.’ -- The Telegraph'Kisil maintains that Zabrana did his utmost to find "credible and objective sources" of information in the USSR. "It’s possible -- and actually even probable -- that he could have met someone from this circle of people who told him about the assassination of Camus, and who themselves had heard it from someone close to the upper echelons of the Communist Party," he said.' -- Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty'Catelli learned not to give up hope in the time since he discovered the testimony of Jan Zábrana. His book reads like a detective novel without resolution or punishment –– no one was or will be jailed for murdering Camus.' -- Pagina 12 (Argentina)'A text of seductive literary, biographical, critical and historical value.' -- Avvenire'Catelli succeeds in convincing us that Camus could have been assassinated by the KGB.' -- Le Monde Libertaire'Fast-paced and entertaining, reads like a spy novel.' -- La Capital (Argentina)'Catelli contends that the KGB was responsible for the auto accident that killed Camus […] More controversially, he also argues that the French government was complicit in the killing.' -- Inside Hook'Eloquently written.' -- Green Left

Emerald Publishing Limited The First British Crime Survey: An Ethnography of
Book SynopsisThe First British Crime Survey: An Ethnography of Criminology within Government explores the early history of the British Crime Survey, now the Crime Survey for England & Wales, a research enterprise widely perceived to be an international gold standard for the measurement of crime. Over the past forty years, the survey has reshaped public debate with new insights into patterns of crime and perceptions of the criminal justice system. Currently, the administrative origins of the survey can be traced to the growing influence of an international network of criminologists and public officials focused on crime prevention and measurement, the organisation of Home Office research programmes, and public officials’ concerns about urban uprisings, efficiency reforms, media coverage, and the politics of crime. The First British Crime Survey: An Ethnography of Criminology within Government examines the history of this survey through the work practices of the ‘crime survey circus’ which developed new methods for counting and reporting crime. Julian Molina provides a novel contribution to the understanding of how government officials, academics, and ‘administrative criminologists’ address the practical challenges associated with new, large-scale data projects. This ethnography draws on archival sources, interviews with government officials and criminologists, and the author’s experience using survey data within government. A crucial resource for understanding the history of the British Crime Survey, The First British Crime Survey: An Ethnography of Criminology within Government appeals to those interested in the relations between ‘law and order’ politics, crime statistics, administrative criminology, and the criminal justice system.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1. Emerald Publishing Limited Danger in Police Culture: Perspectives from South
Book SynopsisDanger in Police Culture: Perspectives from South Africa offers a fresh perspective on how officers understand, interpret and construct danger. With unique insight from working with uniformed and detective police, the author breaks new ground as the first researcher to work alongside a Tactical Response Team in South Africa. Through ethnographic research in South Africa, Perkins explores the lived experiences of police navigating danger and death. Reframing the question of what makes policing dangerous, the author employs a theoretical framework as a prism, illuminating ambiguous ideas shaping perceptions of danger in police culture. A vivid portrayal of how danger is materialized through risk reduction strategies and artefacts, dramatized through memorialization and normalized in daily police practices, Perkins concludes by reflecting on policy developments aimed at addressing the understanding and influence of danger in contemporary policing. Underscoring the need to reconsider the concept of danger in policing, this is a much-needed assessment of its understanding and impact on contemporary police work. In support of the Perkins Síochána Scholarship, the author’s proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to fund the continuing development of South African graduate students in Criminal Justice and Criminology studies in the Global South.Table of ContentsForeword; Clifford Shearing Chapter 1. Amber Books Ltd Psychic Detectives: Using the Power of the MInd
Book SynopsisCrime investigation is not always a matter of gathering hard evidence. Just as police officers sometimes follow a "hunch", people with psychic abilities have often supplied invaluable leads to help crack the most baffling cases. Through dreams, visions, telepathy, and a host of other means, psychics have also predicted and tried to prevent many serious crimes. Psychic Detectives allows you to enter their world, revealing their astounding experiences and the often heavy price they pay for sharing what they know. Police agencies are generally reluctant to admit to the use of psychics during or even after the completion of an investigation for fear of ridicule from the public and other members of the law enforcement community. Despite this, psychics have often become involved in a large number of highly publicised investigations into serial murders conducted over the last 20 years or more. Featured cases include: the Kennedy assassinations • Jack the Ripper • Charles Manson murders • Uri Geller's diamond find • David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam") • Los Angeles Olympic Games bombing • Moors murders • Peter Sutcliffe ("The Yorkshire Ripper") • IRA bombing, Manchester • disappearance of Lord Lucan • Patty Hearst kidnapping • and many more ...Table of ContentsIntroduction 1: The First Psychic Detectives A look at how Roman and Greek oracles used altered states of consciousness and 'communed with spirits' in order to influence affairs of politics, war and crime. Medieval psychics who had visions of other people and future events were branded as witches and warlocks as a consequence. Investigates real cases from Victorian times of strange crimes with a supernatural bent that brought out the first psychic assistance and inspired fictional detectives such as Sherlock Holmes. 2: Tools of the Trade The techniques used by psychic detectives: Dreams can provide evidence that can assist the police in their enquiries, as well as the problems of analysis and interpretation. Psychometry is the practice of seeing visions by holding an object - such as an item of clothing belonging to a missing or murdered person - and using these visions to direct a search. Psychics may call on map dowsing, using tools such as pendulums and a map in order to define the location to hunt for clues. Clairvoyance, in which the spirits of the dead contact psychics to aid in their quest to solve a case - including victims assisting in bringing their own killers to justice. 3: Supernatural Crime-Busting How psychics aid police in the tracking of killers. Case studies include the use of psychics to try to locate the still missing bodies left by the Moors Murderers, and the psychics who attempted to prevent the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy. 4: Profile of a Psychic Sleuth This chapter tells the story of Renie Wiley, a psychic detective, from how she discovered her abilities, through the way she works and onto some of her major cases. 5: The Police View The various motives that police have for using psychics during their investigations and the techniques selected to best utilise the evidence provided. A case history sets out how one police detective in Oregon has honed his own ESP after working with psychics but presents his evidence as 'hunches'. 6: In the Courtroom A series of case histories will punctuate this section, reporting on the problems of getting a conviction in a case where psychic methods lead to an arrest. 7: The Danger of Being Right The risks to psychics when they assist the police in their investigations are addressed through a series of case histories and box features including interviews with police and psychics. Intersentia Ltd Towards a Regime of Responsibility of Armed
Book SynopsisArmed groups have played a predominant role in the violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law committed in conflict settings. The increase in the number of non-international armed conflicts during the past decades has emphasised the need to address the multiple legal challenges posed by the actions of armed groups. In particular, there is considerable uncertainty regarding the framework of responsibility for armed groups in international law. While much has been written regarding their international (primary) obligations, the possibility of developing a responsibility framework for armed groups under international law has been underexplored. Consequently, the aim of this book is to examine how the principles of international responsibility could be developed and adjusted to account for armed groups as collective entities. This general aim has been divided into three specific objectives. First, the book analyses the concept of responsibility in international law and assesses the legal and practical reasons in favour of developing such a regime for armed groups. Second, it examines the viability of establishing a responsibility regime for armed groups based on rules of attribution. Third, it explores the possible legal consequences of responsibility applicable to armed groups, with a particular focus on the obligation to provide reparations to victims. In doing so, this book will argue that certain non-traditional sources of international law could be used to interpret and adapt international law to the current conditions of contemporary armed conflict.Table of ContentsTable of Contents and Preliminary Pages (p. 0) Chapter 1. John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Great Telecoms Swindle: How the collapse of
Book SynopsisWith the demise of WorldCom amidst a flurry of accounting scandals dominating the front pages, and following hotly in the footsteps of the equally spectacular downfall of other telecoms giants including Global Crossing and Lucent Technologies in recent months, The Great Telecoms Swindle investigates the reasons behind a roller coaster ride that is set to continue for some time yet. Vivendi, France Telecom, Vodaphone and numerous other corporate behemoths all face testing and possibly life-threatening times that will demand radical solutions in the coming months. The telecoms story is set to run and run and investors are set to continue to feel the heat. For a market that, as little as eighteen months ago amounted to a license to print money, the question 'what went wrong?' must urgently be asked. How could companies like Cisco Systems go from being paragons of virtue in the new corporate age to near pariahs embroiled in a welter of financial difficulties in such a short space of time? Is 'next generation telecoms' nothing more than a myth, a triumph of hype over reality? Tracking the rise and fall of the telecoms market from deregulation in the eighties through the advent of the mobile world, and on to broadband, 3G, and the mobile Internet the authors uncover what fuelled the boom, where the mistakes were made (by industry players and investors alike), and what if anything the future holds. Taking the lid off the headlines, The Great Telecoms Swindle reveals and examines the real problems in the telecoms market today, and exposes an industry that is entirely unsure of its own future value proposition.Trade Review"…it is a great read…" (Irish Independent, 13 March 2003) "…there is an important point to be made…" (Financial Director, 1 April 2003) "…A highly readable summary of the global boom, why it happened and the way in which it unfolded…Well worth a read…" (Global Turnaround, April 2003) "…A good bit of catch up reading…whom the peace of change has been to much…" (Teleworker, June 2003)Table of ContentsPreface Introduction. 1. Ebury Publishing Sherlock: The Casebook
Book SynopsisThis book is my humble attempt to shine a light on the work of the best and wisest I have ever known. He has, I think it is safe to say, elevated the science of detection into an art form. Having been at his side during some of his most remarkable cases, it has fallen to me to bring his achievements to the attention of the wider public. He is, quite simply, the Mozart of criminal investigation. I would say more, but I am flattered and delighted to say that Sherlock Holmes himself has agreed to write a piece for the cover. John Watson Don’t buy this book. The author has transformed what should have been a series of lectures into a gross and tasteless entertainment. The science of deduction is a branch of human achievement requiring serious analysis and yet here I find it lavishly illustrated, disfigured with humour and infested with gossip. Apparently, this kind of sensationalism is required to engage the interest of the reading public, but it is rather like working an office romance into a paper on quantum physics. Only an idiot would be impressed. Help yourself. Sherlock HolmesTrade ReviewA splendid tribute to the Great Detective and his re-imagining for the BBC in the 21st Century and the perfect stocking-filler for fans old and new...this is a treat. -- Mike Ripley * ShotsMag.co.uk *

Cork University Press A Woman to Blame: The Kerry Babies Case
Book SynopsisJoanne Hayes, at 24 years of age, concealed the birth and death of her baby in County Kerry, Ireland, in 1984. Subsequently she confessed to the murder, by stabbing, of another baby. All of the scientific evidence showed that she could not have had this second baby. The police nevertheless, insisted on charging her and, after the charges were dropped, continued to insist that she had given birth to twins conceived of two different men. A public tribunal of inquiry was called to examine the behaviour of the police and their handling of the case. The police, in defence of themselves and in justification of confessions" obtained, called a succession of male experts on the medical, social and moral roman catholic fibre of Joanne Hayes. Her married lover detailed the times, places and manner of her love making. Using the twins' theory as a springboard, the question was posed and debated: Did she love this man or what was he and other men prepared to do with her? After six months of daily discussion among the men, the judge declared 'There were times when we all believed she had twins'. The treatment of Joanne Hayes, who stood accused of no crime, was a model for Irish male attitudes to woman. She was caught up in a time of rapid social change between two Irelands, an earlier Ireland in which the Catholic Church had held a moral monopoly and a new liberal and secular Ireland.Table of ContentsForeword by Nell McCafferty

Waterside Press Napper: Through a Glass Darkly
Book SynopsisThe book contains information not until now in the public domain and tells of the author's tenacity as a lower-ranking officer in the face of dwindling resources and sometimes disparagement by more senior investigators. A straightforward account of the solving of heinous and complex crimes, it also delves into media fascination with serious offences and shows how the press may latch on to one murder whilst ignoring another, even more horrific, one. The author was an investigator on the Bisset case from the day of the murder through to seeing that case linked first to south-London's Green Chain Walk rapes and the discovery that Napper also killed Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common - a case in which the wrong man was targeted and charged by other officers. The book also looks at the mind of Robert Napper, his bizarre behaviour, family history and `doodlings' and the fact that sheer `chance' allowed him to remain free for so long. By the detective who arrested Napper. Looks at the emergence of criminal profiling. Enters the mind of a psychotic killer. Shows how media `obsession' can hinder justice.
