Book SynopsisPsychology, Law and Eyewitness Testimony Peter B. Ainsworth, University of Manchester, UK Before giving evidence, witnesses have to swear to tell ''the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth''. Given current knowledge about human perception and memory, it is unlikely that witnesses will be able to keep this promise. Many professionals within the criminal justice and legal system are involved in recording and assessing eyewitness testimony, sometimes with unrealistic expectations of the ability of eyewitnesses to provide accurate and objective testimony: they, and students of psychology, law and criminology, will welcome this up-to-date, accessible survey of the concepts and research which now inform our knowledge of this field. Book SynopsisAn engaging account of an extraordinary, trailblazing woman - Australia''s first female detective - LILLIAN ARMFIELD is also the vivid and gripping story of the origins of Sydney''s organised crime underbelly.''Special Constable'' Lillian Armfield was policing Sydney''s mean streets during some of the most dramatic years of crime in the city. By the late 1920s, eastern Sydney was the heartland of organised crime and the notorious turf battles known as the Razor Wars, where bloodied bodies were strewn across streets after late-night clashes between rival gangs. Book SynopsisAt the dawn of the Victorian age there was effectively no police detective force in Britain and detecting methods were rudimentary; by the end of Victoria's reign the Criminal Investigation Department had been established and basic forensic tests were in use. This book explores the development of the professional detective during the nineteenth century, giving examples of the methods he used to track down criminals and to convict them of offences ranging from petty theft to brutal murder. It also explains the development of forensics, from fingerprinting to tests that could identify whether or not blood was human. Mysteries such as the Jack the Ripper murders are examined, as well as the work of famous sleuths like the Prince of Detectives' Jonathan Whicher the real-life counterpart of the legendary Sherlock Holmes.Table of ContentsIntroduction / Bow Street / The Detective Branch / Prince of Detectives / Tracking Down Terrorists / Crime Scene Investigation – in and Beyond Whitechapel / Further reading / Places to Visit / Index

The History Press Ltd The Cromwell Street Murders
Book SynopsisThis book tells for the first time the story from a police perspective. For ten years, the officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Superintendent John Bennett QPM, has refused to tell his story. Now, together with BBC journalist Graham Gardner, he reveals the full story of how the Wests were caught, how the case was prepared and how it nearly failed to come to court. This book chronicles the roles of those who brought down two of Britain''s most infamous killers, shedding light on the real heroes of one of the saddest chapters of criminal history. It explores the court processes, the complications of Rose West''s trial, her unsuccessful appeal and the difficulty of dealing with witnesses in such a traumatic case. On one level, this is a story of the triumph of good over evil; on another it is a detailed documentation of how a murder investigation really works - the pressures, the commitment and the physical and emotional drain on those who carry out this work.

Book SynopsisThe first edition of William A. Guy''s Principles of Forensic Medicine was published at the start of Victoria''s reign; the final edition, from which these selections derive, was published towards the end, just a few years after the Whitechapel horrors had pushed the emerging science to the forefront of the public''s consciousness. With this guide in hand, a detective could tell whether the victim had suffocated, drowned, been shot, stabbed, or struck by lightning, spontaneously combusted, frozen to death or expired due to starvation - or, as the guide warns, was not dead at all, but simply in a state of ''suspended animation''. Suggestions include examining the face of the deceased for an ''expression of angry resistance'', a clear indication of murder, and studying the demeanour of the nearest and dearest in cases of suspected ''secret poisoning''. With original woodcuts, case studies and notes on identifying the corpse and walking the crime scene, Victorian CSI will fascinate lovers

Louisiana State University Press Race Crime and Policing in the Jim Crow South
Book SynopsisReveals previously unrecognized efforts by African Americans to use, manage, and exploit policing. In the process, Brandon Jett exposes a complex relationship, suggesting that while violence or the threat of violence shaped police and minority relations, it did not define all interactions.Trade ReviewBrandon Jett shatters some widely held axioms about policing in the American South, showing how police departments emerged in lockstep with urbanization – not slavery – and evolved in complex ways, from mechanisms of racial control to entities that relied on Black cooperation and consent. Jett's book should be required reading for anyone interested in the complex story of race and policing in the United States." - Anders Walker, author of The Burning House: Jim Crow and the Making of Modern America"Race, Crime, and Policing in the Jim Crow South will have an immediate impact on the understanding of race and policing in America. Brandon Jett vividly illustrates the continuous maltreatment of blacks by the criminal justice system and how African Americans responded in myriad, and at times unexpected, ways to the expansion of that system. This is important work." - Dwight Watson, author of Race and the Houston Police Department, 1930-1990: A Change Did Come"With depth and nuance, Brandon Jett examines the rise of professional police departments in three southern cities in the midst of the Jim Crow Era. He shows how law enforcement served to reinforce white supremacy, how African Americans responded to the often brutal over policing of their neighborhoods, and how they negotiated the policing system to ensure the safety of their communities. This is a remarkably intelligent and well-researched book that will contribute much to our understandings of the history of criminal justice in the South and urban life under Jim Crow." - Amy L. Wood, author of Lynching and Spectacle: Witnessing Racial Violence in America, 1880-1940"From the dustiest corners of law enforcement archives, Brandon Jett has unearthed the chilling history of southern white police departments that even in the middle of the 20th Century ruthlessly pursued the enforcement of degrading racial expectations, aiding the exploitation of African-American labor, and unjustly brutalizing and intimidating black citizens away from their civil, political and legal rights. This is the foundational story of why the Black Lives Matter movement is not just necessary but long overdue." - Douglas A. Blackmon, author of Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II, winner of the Pulitzer Prize

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Criminalisation of Fantasy Material
Book SynopsisThis book addresses the criminalisation of sexually explicit material depicting or describing fictitious characters who appear to be children. It is the first book of its kind to specifically examine the expansion of the law to include fictional representations of children, focusing on the law in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The author explores the potential criminalisation of comics and subgenres of manga that frequently depict childlike characters in a sexual context. Of course, the need to protect children from harm outweighs freedom of expression and the right to privacy; however, this argument is complicated by the material being purely fictional. Does prohibiting the fictional representation of minors interfere with individual freedoms? Based on a detailed socio-legal study, this book extensively analyses literature and pertinent theories of criminalisation, such as the Harm Principle, Offense Principle, and Legal Moralism. The boTrade Review"Al-Alosi presents a thought-provoking, timely, eloquent and detailed examination of the criminalisation of fantasy material. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the immediate concern of child exploitation and the question of how we interpret and set the limits of individual human ‘rights’ when faced with the need to protect those who may be harmed".Associate Professor Dr Tony Krone, University of Canberra (Australia). "This book provides a thought-provoking examination of the contemporary regulation of sexually explicit representations of children. Al-Alosi presents a nuanced analysis that thoroughly challenges the ways in which we approach the regulation of explicit material and understand its harms, or lack thereof. This book unsettled my own thinking around the issue and provides timely, original, and provocative contribution". Dr Bianca Fileborn, School of Social Sciences, University of New South Wales.Based on a comprehensive analysis of fantasy crime, this book asks fundamental questions about how we conceive of, and prosecute, sexually explicit material portraying children. Taylor & Francis Inc The Dynamics of Murder
Book SynopsisIn recent years, there has been a surge in school shootings, workplace homicides, hate violence, and deadly terrorist attacks in the United States. This has resulted in a greater focus on homicidal behavior, its antecedents, ways to recognize warning signs of at-risk victims and offenders, and preventive measures. It has also led to increased efforts by lawmakers to create and pass tough crime legislation as well as improved federal, state, and local law enforcement response to murder and other violent crimes. The Dynamics of Murder: Kill or Be Killed is a multifaceted probe of murder offenses, offenders, victims, and characteristics of homicide in American society. This book breaks new ground in homicide studies by examining issues generally ignored or neglected among researchers. Topics include murders occurring in the workplace and in schools, those perpetrated by gangs and terrorists, those incited by bias, and intimate and intrafamilial murders. Rowman & Littlefield Forensics in America
Book SynopsisHere is the story of the process by which competitive speech and debate evolved in the United States during the 20th Century. This authoritative history shows how forensics, as practiced in the United States, was an uneasy fusion of contradictory premises that began as a significant part of the tradition of American public address: The need for preparing students to participate in democratic governance in conflict with a student's need to express personal and competitive impulses. Forensics represented a push and pull between an activity simultaneously considered to be both a public and a private good. The book:identifies the themes and trends of American forensics within an overarching chronological framework; reveals the impact of American forensics on the communication discipline, as well as America's social and educational systems; concentrates on the elements of social history that contributed to organizational development, leadership, and politics; and, provides a base line refleTrade ReviewThrough an examination of written histories and other materials, communication scholars Michael Bartanen and Robert Littlefield deliver the first historical account of the evolution of forensics in the US. The authors identify the systemic variables affecting this evolution, including the cultural dimensions of forensics activities. In part 1, they trace the historical context of the practice of forensics from the era of public oratory through the era of technology. In part 2, they address the pedagogical growth and development of competitive forensics. And in the third and last part, they focus on the sociocultural dimensions of the field. In a particularly compelling chapter, the authors discuss "absent histories" and offer a holistic understanding of African American participation in forensics in the US. The helpful tables the authors provide allow readers to more easily comprehend dense and complicated material. As the first work to trace how forensics undergirds the tradition of American public address, this book is an invaluable resource. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. * CHOICE *Forensics in America should be in every department library, on every professor’s bookshelf, and in every student competitor's backpack. -- James Copeland, Executive Director-Emeritus, National Forensic LeagueThe authors are the experts in the field. They develop a coherent and important argument. This is the first comprehensive history of American forensics and I predict it will stand as the history of forensics for the next 100 years. -- David A. Frank, Professor of Rhetoric, University of OregonForensics in America: A History does an excellent job of starting at the formation of forensics and describes its growth and role in America. It also explains the link between forensics and the formation of communication departments and forensic organizations. -- Gina Jensen, Assistant Director of Forensics and Debate, Webster UniversityThe history is vital to the activity, but much of what is known, especially what is known to younger coaches/directors is myth - passed on because one person five years ago did something. This history clears up many of the myths. The major strength of this book includes the research and the explanations. Forensics in America is very clear and follows a logical progression. If you are interested in learning about the history of forensic activity, or teaching it, this book is a necessary component. -- Nina-Jo Moore, Professor of Communication, Appalachian State McFarland & Co Inc Guns and College Homicide
Book Synopsis At a time when mass shootings in schools and other public spaces have become commonplace, it might seem surprising that American college campuses are not magnets for murderers but sanctuaries from them. Because of remarkably effective gun-safe policies, deaths by firearms on college campuses are 1,000 times less frequent than in the U.S. public at large. Drawing on crime data submitted in compliance with the Clery Act and public reports of those crimes, this study inventories every documented homicide at a U.S. college or university between 2001 and 2016, making a compelling argument for using gun-safe campuses as guides for broader public safety.

McFarland & Co Inc Law Enforcement in American Cinema 18941952
Book Synopsis Widespread law enforcement or formal policing outside of cities appeared in the early 20th century around the same time the early film industry was developing--the two evolved in tandem, intersecting in meaningful ways. Much scholarship has focused on portrayals of the criminal in early American cinema, yet little has been written about depictions of the criminal''s antagonist. This history examines how different on-screen representations shifted public perception of law enforcement--initially seen as a suspicious or intrusive institution, then as a power for the common good.Trade Review"Law Enforcement in American Cinema delivers a short but very rewarding title." - popcultureshelf.comTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction I. McFarland & Co Inc Storefront Sting
Book Synopsis This thrilling story memorializes one of the most dangerous--and successful--series of undercover operations conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Written by the special agent who took these operations from disrupting small time fencing schemes to infiltrating major criminal organizations, this book is the first story of these secretive operations. During the operation''s run from 2006 to 2014, Lou Valoze''s fictitious businesses allowed his team of undercover agents to take thousands of weapons out of circulation and millions of dollars of drugs off the street. Through these covert storefront operations, the author developed a unique investigative blueprint for removing guns from the hands of violent felons and drug dealers. This book also explores the dark reality of living a double life and how it becomes difficult to tell the difference between the good guys and bad guys.Table of ContentsForeword by Javier PeñaIntroductionOne.
