Book SynopsisCreative activities can support people with dementia, leading to moments of reconnection and joy. This book shows how the Montessori method - with its arts-based, person-centred and positive focus - can help caregivers connect to people with dementia.Drawing on 20 years of experience, Tom and Karen Brenner explain the philosophy of the Montessori method, provide clearly-written steps to follow when applying it, and share a wealth of case studies and stories from their personal work using this method with people with dementia. This includes reading circles, art programmes, drum circles, poetry, and video diaries. Supported by research of the importance of creativity and the arts in dementia care, it is made clear throughout how every aspect of the Montessori method can help those with dementia to rediscover the world around them, maximising the opportunities they have to reconnect with their peers, family, friends, and support staff.

Quercus Publishing How to Draw Anything
Book SynopsisDo something amazing and learn a new skill thanks to the Little Ways to Live a Big Life books! As children, when we learn to write, we gain an important life skill: a practical means of communicating that we end up using almost every day of our lives, if only to jot down a shopping list or dash out an email. As children, we also know instinctively that drawing is a great way to communicate, but later in life it isn't universally valued and nurtured in the way that writing is. It's not seen as a necessity, it's seen as a specialism. As a result, most of us stop drawing completely, apart from the odd doodling. More than that, we lose all confidence in our ability to draw. Yet drawing is an incredibly practical way of turning what's inside your head into something tangible and useful. It can equip you with new means of solving problems, sharing ideas and telling stories. How to Draw Anything sets out to repair our broken relationship with drawing. It will inspire you to pick up that pencil from where you left it all those years ago and start making pictures again. It will give you back the confidence and joy in drawing you never should have lost. And it will take drawing out of the art world and put it into your world, introducing you to drawing as a practical tool for everyday life that will change the way you work, think and communicate.Trade ReviewIn our relentless pursuit of a fulfilled life, we've become a knowledge-hungry nation. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Philosophy of Expressive Arts Therapy: Poiesis
Book SynopsisLaying the philosophical foundations of expressive arts therapy, this book highlights the role and importance of poiesis, the art of 'making' as a response to the world, in the expressive arts therapies as well as our own lives. The concept of poiesis was originally developed and brought into the field by Stephen K. Levine. It is a perspective that restores the primacy of the arts for the arts therapies instead of reducing art-making and art-objects to psychological data. Bringing together different schools of thought in unexpected ways, this book shows how the principles underlying expressive arts therapy have relevance to ethics, politics and social change. It includes chapters on Taoism, improvisation in the arts, and the importance of creativity for understanding human existence. With personal narratives and poetry to help create natural points for the reader to stop and reflect, Philosophy of Expressive Arts Therapy is the perfect guide for those wanting to understand the role of the arts and art-making in life and in therapeutic change.Trade ReviewFrom my close perspective on Stephen K. Levine's work over the past four decades, I applaud Philosophy of Expressive Arts Therapy and its 'integration' of a lifework of poiesis (making). This volume includes seminal essays on trauma, imagination, and beauty together with new and timely writings on identity and relationships with China and East Asia. I have always admired Levine's unique and dogged affirmation of the productive role of breaking to make anew, described here as 'unintegration', and its vital place in creative expression. I am struck by how he so clearly connects this alchemical process to our common commitment to the classical Chinese emphasis of creating ourselves through artistic expression. Among the book's many achievements is the insistence that the creation of a person, a community, and a world is ongoing, never finished and always transcending fixed identities; it is a process where beauty is the "presence" of engagements with each other and the life we make, now. -- Shaun McNiff, author of Imagination in Action, Art Heals, Art as Medicine, Professor at Lesley UniversityIn his most stunning new work as a philosopher, therapist, teacher and artist, Levine offers us an invitation into the heart and soul of expressive arts, weaving a narrative both profoundly compelling and generously accessible. With his deeply lived personal experiences, he offers himself up as if a case study on the work itself. I find in this masterful work the beauty of an embodied thinker, a vulnerable risk taker, a humble seeker who, with persevering commitment, asks us to join him in looking to the arts to bring worlds and people together. -- Daria Halprin, Tamalpa Institute, Author of The Expressive Body in Life, Art & TherapyBoth personal and profound, this collection of essays and poems represents an intellectual and artistic journey through life of an important philosopher, teacher and poet of expressive arts. This is an inspiring read and a unique contribution to the field. -- Sally Atkins, Ed.D. Core Faculty, the European Graduate School, Professor Emerita, Appalachian State UniversityPhilosopher, therapist, poet, performer and elder sage, Stephen Levine once againtakes us down the road where very few in the field of expressive arts dare to go. From his early days studying philosophy and protesting injustice, to his studies of 'Oriental' or Taoist thought, Levine makes clear that Poiesis is the Way (Tao) of expressive arts; a form of 'wu-wei', or non-doing activity that lets itself be guided by what emerges, in order to discover something new. What is always consistently central is the idea of Poiesis - the capacity to engage creatively with what we are given in life and to shape it anew. In each chapter Levine emphasizes expressive arts as a kind of social action, an essential connection from self to community to world. Woven throughout the book are also personal and vulnerable reflections on life, suffering and regeneration, in the form of his own poignant and moving poetry. This book is a must read for anyone, not just those in the field of expressive arts but for all who want to understand a deeper way to be alive and connect with their own sense of creative renewal. -- Mitchell Kossak PhD, LMHC, REAT, Associate Professor, Counseling and Expressive Therapies, Lesley UniversityTable of Contents1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Songwriting: Methods, Techniques and Clinical
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive and groundbreaking book describes the effective use of songwriting in music therapy with a variety of client populations, from children with cancer and adolescents in secondary school to people with traumatic brain injury and mental health problems. The authors explain the specific considerations to bear in mind when working with particular client groups to achieve the best clinical outcomes. All the contributors are experienced music therapy clinicians and researchers. They provide many case examples from clinical practice to illustrate the therapeutic methods being used, together with notated examples of songs produced in therapy. Particular emphasis is placed on how lyrics and music are created, including the theoretical approaches underpinning this process. This practical book will prove indispensable to students, clinical therapists, music therapists, educators, teachers and musicians.Trade ReviewI considered dipping in and out of chapters but ended up reading from cover to cover. I found it interesting and intriguing to progress through the diversity of therapists' orientations, practices and contexts, wondering how it would all come together in the end. There are inspiring ideas and moving case examples expressed in many of the chapters. -- British Journal of Music TherapyPractically oriented, instructive, inclusive and forthright, this book focuses on techniques for writing songs with clients and is geared chiefly toward music therapy clinicians, students and educators. This methods book attempts to explore and emphasize the value of songwriting within a therapeutic context and, ultimately, to define the methods and techniques used, both for teaching purposes and for the analysis and explanation of clinical processes and outcomes. This welcome effort to fully recognize the inherent value of songwriting and to systematically standardize its uses in the field was long overdue, as music therapists have long incorporated songwriting in their clinical repertoire of methods. Reading this book undoubtedly strengthens one's confidence in the procedure of songwriting with the client and in its overall effectiveness as a method of facilitating therapy. As a music therapist who, like so many others in this field, integrates songwriting in her clinical work, I feel that I derived much theoretical and practical information from Songwriting. As a methods book, I found it to be efficient, informative and interesting both to the student and to the practicing music therapist, with a refreshing variety of techniques that may enrich the songwriting repertoire of even the most experienced clinician. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyTable of ContentsForeword, Even Ruud. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Receptive Methods in Music Therapy: Techniques
Book SynopsisThis practical book describes the specific use of receptive (listening) methods and techniques in music therapy clinical practice and research, including relaxation with music for children and adults, the use of visualisation and imagery, music and collage, song-lyric discussion, vibroacoustic applications, music and movement techniques, and other forms of aesthetic listening to music. The authors explain these receptive methods of intervention using a format that enables practitioners to apply them in practice and make informed choices about music suitable for each of the different techniques. Protocols are described step-by-step, with reference to the necessary environment, conditions, skills and appropriate musical material.Receptive Methods in Music Therapy will prove indispensable to music therapy students, practitioners, educators and researchers.Trade Reviewthis book now presents us with an opportunity to discover the huge range of practice in receptive music therapy. The authors offer their receptive music therapy methods with conviction and the book could be a real challenge to orthodox thinking and teaching in the UK. Listening to music forms part of many sessions anyway: perhaps it is time to include consciously this "third arm" of music therapy. -- British Journal of Music TherapyThis is an extremely practical book, which will be very helpful to students who may believe that they require a precise and pragmatic step by step guide for facilitating different types of music therapy sessions. This was especially evident in most chapters emphasising the verbal relaxation inductions. Every detail has been considered to ensure the successful application of each method including contra-indicators when necessary when necessary. -- Community Living MagazineDenise Grocke and Tony Wigram are to be congratulated for addressing how the music therapist applies music listening as a therapeutic tool. Because every music therapy encounter involves receiving music in some way, it is exceedingly challenging to describe the role of receptive music in a single volume. Yet, the authors succeed in providing an excellent compendium of techniques that are part of the music therapist's repertoire. Students and professionals will be well-served by this essential guidebook on the practice of receptive music therapy. The authors have contributed an important text, affirming, once again, their expertise in the field of music therapy. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyWhile I take the perspective of a music therapy educator and strongly recommend this text for all students, I also see myself as a life long learner and this book has provided me with new and inspiring methods organized in such a way as to function as a reference text, Each chapter stands alone so the student/therapist can flick to relevant parts easily. As the first book of its kind on receptive methods in music therapy, this book will serve many needs of all music therapists and students. -- Australian Journal of Music TherapyThis book offers a thought provoking insight into the powerful and therapeutic effect of music, not just for music therapists but for all those interested in music and the application of art therapies. -- Community LivingTable of ContentsForeword by Cheryl Dileo. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy: Accessing the
Book SynopsisFocusing provides an effective way of listening to the innate wisdom of the body, while art therapy harnesses and activates creative intelligence. Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy: Accessing the Body's Wisdom and Creative Intelligence is a ground-breaking book integrating renowned psychologist Eugene Gendlin's Focusing with art therapy. This new, Focusing-based approach to art therapy helps clients to befriend their inner experience, access healing imagery from the body's felt sense to express in art, and carry forward implicit steps that lead toward change. Written for readers to be able to learn the application of this innovative approach, the book provides in-depth examples and descriptions of how to adapt Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy to a wide variety of clinical populations including individuals and groups with severe psychiatric illness, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more, as well as applications to private practice, illness and wellness, spirituality, and self-care.Integrating theory, clinical practice, and numerous guided exercises, this accessible book will enhance clinical sensitivity and skill, while adding resources for bringing creativity into practice. It will be of interest to art therapists, Focusing therapists, psychologists, counselors and social workers, as well as trainers and students.Trade ReviewIn her book, Focus-Oriented Art Therapy, Laury Rappaport, whilst acknowledging how each discipline is a complete practice for self-awareness, growth and therapeutic change in its own right, eloquently shows how the Focusing method can be wedded to this expressive arts therapy to form a "rich, transformational alchemy" (p.16).I found the author's clear, personal and at times, gently passionate manner made the book not only person-centred but also extremely reader-centred. Rappaport invites the reader toengage with the material on a deeply experiential, embodied level, and there are bountiful rewards in store. Rappaport has written the book with several audiences in mind - professionals from each of the two disciplines wishing to integrate the other into their current practice and mental health and healing arts professionals who have an interest in both disciplines but are trained in neither one. An ambitious task, but one which, I believe, she achieves with intelligence and sensitivity. A rich and vivid tapestry of clients' images are woven throughout the book as we are taken on different journeys of healing. All the images are in black-and-white rather than colour which strangely enhanced their magic for me. I felt I was invited to imagine the tones and hues for myself. Rappaport's openness and generosity around her chosen art form resonated strongly for me; just because we are dramatherapists, or play therapists, or dance movement therapists, we do not have sole claim to these expressive media. Nor, as we discover, can Focusers assert exclusive possession of their approach. The spiritual essence permeates the writing throughout this book and I often found myself affected on many levels by its content. I also learnt a lot about art therapy and thoroughly appreciated the author's extensive knowledge and experience of her discipline (for instance, when not to invite clients to use their non-dominant hand in imagemaking) and the distinctions she makes between art therapy and art psychotherapy (prompting my thinking about dramatherapy and drama psychotherapy). Rappaport offers a very convincing argument for bringing Focusing and art therapy together and it would be easy to substitute dramatherapy in place of art therapy in the table on Interconnections (p.88, 90). Although this book is designed to be dipped in and out of, especially the exercises, I would really encourage a full reading of it. This is a gem of a book and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I am indebted to Dr Rappaport's for her wealth and generosity in the therapeutic field and I look forward to the forthcoming addition in the series, Focus-Oriented Dramatherapy. -- Dramatherapy, Di GammageWe have a duty to look beyond the psyche and reference the soma more often in therapeutic work. This book shows you a way to begin doing this. -- British Association of Art TherapistsThis is a gem of a book and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I am indebted to Dr Rappaport's for her wealth and generosity in the therapeutic field and I look forward to the forthcoming addition in the series, Focus-Orientated Dramatherapy. -- Di Gammage, DramatherapistFocusing-Oriented Art Therapy by Laury Rappaport is brilliantly conceptualized and written and will be useful to any mental health worker. Integrating theory, practice and case examples, the author successfully achieves her goal of integrating art therapy with Focusing with application to a wide variety of clients and settings. Her exercises and case examples reveal her to be a gifted therapist and her writing affords her the opportunity to share her creative talent with others. A must read. -- Barbara F. Okun, PhD Northeastern University and Harvard Medical SchoolFocusing-Oriented Art Therapy is a major contribution to art therapy literature and practice. Laury Rappaport introduces a contemplative method and philosophy grounded in the body's felt-sense of experience and its innate and largely unrecognized wisdom. This intellectually provocative, yet thoroughly practical text, establishes Rappaport as an emergent leader in the art therapy world and author of a book that every student and art therapist must read in order to appreciate the depth and breadth of our discipline. -- Shaun McNiff, University Professor, Lesley University, Cambridge, MAIn a time the fields of neuroscience and somatic therapy increasingly inform therapeutic intervention, Laury Rappaport has written a book that is both timely and passionate in its message. As we continue to understand the relationship between the brain and emotion, sensory work or the "felt sense" is central to recovery and repair of both psyche and spirit. Rappaport provides a needed and comprehensive resource on why infusing the process of Focusing with art therapy is natural combination and one that creatively brings together mind and body in treatment. Every therapist who uses creative methods in their work will benefit from the wisdom found throughout this volume. -- Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, ATR-BC, LPCC, National Institute for Trauma and LossThe reader can get a solid foundation in both Focusing and Art Therapy through Dr. Laury Rappaport's book. The book goes further to transform both of them, in showing how Focusing is always functioning in Art Therapy and how Art Therapy explicates the Focusing process. With lots of exercises, enriched with examples from therapy and workshops, Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy dives deeply into the life process and yet it succeeds in being a highly practical book. -- Akira Ikemi, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Kansai University (Japan)Here is finally a fascinating text and guide by a practitioner and experienced teacher in the field, who has the expertise to undertake the long overdue task, in providing a practical grounding for what philosophically supports a similar process, Focusing and Expressive Arts Therapy. Laury Rappaport is an articulate teacher and committed artist, who as a psychotherapist can look back on a long professional career, mastering Focusing and Expressive Arts Therapy alike. Based on this expertise, she eloquently presents a rich text written from a truly phenomenological perspective, that guides like a red thread through this practical book. As a result it speaks to therapists of diverse traditions. What a helpful contribution for a wide range of practitioners interested in the Arts or Focusing. -- Paolo J Knill, PhD, Dr.h.c., Provost, European Graduate School, SwizterlandDr. Rappaport's professional, accessible and enjoyable detailed approach to Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy includes a user-friendly introduction to Gendlin's Focusing Method as well as a bridge to using Focusing with art therapy. The 44 focusing-oriented art therapy exercises included are easy to follow and clinically useful. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Music in Music Therapy: Psychodynamic Music
Book SynopsisBringing together a wide range of European thought on music therapy practice, this book provides a deeper insight into the aspects of the therapeutic process which are enabled by music. With a theoretical, psychodynamic approach and high quality clinical case material from across Europe, the editors stress the role of music within music therapy and show how essential the musician is within the identity of a music therapist. The first of its kind, this comprehensive text is an invaluable resource for experienced music therapists worldwide, alongside students and trainees.Trade ReviewThe contributors to this book show how it is possible to connect with important, unspoken truths in the lives of individuals, including very severely disturbed individuals, through music, and in so doing render new opportunities for expression of subjugated aspects of the self. -- from the foreword by Professor Paul WilliamsThe Music in Music Therapy explores music and musical processes as central to music psychotherapeutic practice, primarily through case studies by clinicians from throughout Europe. With a focus on psychodynamic music therapy and the inclusion of cases with a variety of clientele, the book is a welcome addition to the growing literature addressing the role of music in music therapy. In addition to being drawn into the clinical presentations, I am excited and enriched by reading the theoretical material and perspectives on music therapy research that are included. -- Professor Barbara L. Wheeler, PhD, MT-BC, Professor Emerita, Montclair State University, and retired professor, University of Louisville, USAAnyone inclined to see music therapy approaches in binary terms- with musical and psychodynamic understandings as mutually exclusive - may find the title of this book a challenge. I hope it is a challenge they will take up and learn from, because this book offers the most thorough exposition to date of how musical and psychodynamic thinking can and do work together in music therapy... This book is a very rich meal, and readers may well find themselves in need of a digestif! There is material enough for two, or perhaps even three, shorter books. That said, however, there is much very good meat here that will nourish students, novices an more experienced music therapists alike for many years. -- Donald Wetherick, clinical tutor in MT, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London * British Journal of Music Therapy *Table of ContentsForeword by Paul Williams, Training and Supervising Analyst, The British Psychoanalytical Society. 1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Assessment and Outcomes in the Arts Therapies: A
Book SynopsisThere is increasing pressure on therapists to provide details of structured assessments and to report therapy outcomes to funders, employers and co-workers. This edited volume provides a series of case studies, with varied client groups, giving arts therapists an accessible introduction to assessment and outcome measures that can be easily incorporated into their regular practice. The book provides demonstrations, within a practice-based evidence framework, of how measures can be tailored to the individual client's needs. The case studies show assessment and outcome models for music therapy, art therapy and dramatherapy used with a range of client groups including people with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease and those suffering from depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or coping with bereavement.Trade ReviewAs a Dramatherapist it was interesting to read of work by Music and Art and also Speech and Language Therapists with client groups with which I have some experience. This multi-disciplinary approach is very helpful in breaking down barriers and promoting cooperation... There is a wealth of material with tabulated Assessments and Outcomes for therapists in organisations wanting to see numerical and comparative scales. But also Assessment models developed within the therapeutic relationship rather than being pre-determined ones. There are well formulated questionnaires and summaries of outcomes, sometimes with parents' views too, and all the chapters have very clear sub-titles which make for easy reading... I would particularly recommend Caroline Miller's book to students and new graduates of the Arts Therapies who are seeking a comprehensive collection of Assessment models and descriptions of Arts Therapies Outcomes with a wide variety of client groups. As a Supervisor, Dramatherapist and Consultant I feel it is a valuable tool to recommend to supervisees and also people in organisations wanting clarity about different Arts Therapies approaches. For experienced practitioners this book can be of help in re-evaluating one's own practise and in gauging the need to change evaluation methods or ways of recording. -- The Sesame Institute UK and International online JournalAssessment and Outcomes in the Arts Therapies is truly a landmark publication lending credence to Arts Therapies in clinical practice; not only does this book set the standard for effective assessment approaches currently employed by experienced practitioners, I imagine it will generate great interest and challenge Arts Therapists and other professionals to recognise our diversity, strength, and untapped potential for further contributions to research within our profession. -- Mary Brownlow, AThR, Art Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, and Interactive Drawing Therapy Teacher TrainerThis truly engaging and accessible volume will be of interest to Arts Therapists, Arts in Health practitioners and everyone interested in the healing properties of the arts. The contributors represent a wide range of arts therapies and arts based health interventions and demonstrate that providing evidence based practice is entirely compatible with a client centred philosophy. Their passion and commitment reach out from the page and draw us into an inspiring world of artistic enquiry based on their considerable levels of expertise and erudition in their chosen art form. -- Madeline Andersen-Warren, Director of the Northern Trust for Dramatherapy, dramatherapist, author and researcher, Huddersfield, UKThis book is clearly a treasure-trove for both practitioners and researchers in the arts therapies. Caroline Miller and her New Zealand colleagues have provided fresh assessment tools and grounded them in detailed case studies and narratives. Session descriptions are often touching - especially where they describe clients on the autism spectrum. The collection invites the reader's profound understanding of informed research design and practice with adults and children: essential reading for arts therapists. -- Joanna Jaaniste, Dramatherapist, Sydney, AustraliaThis book explores assessment processes and outcome measures in the arts therapies by offering comprehensive working examples of how to apply these in every day practice.... Chapters are fast moving and are neatly segmented with clear headings and colour illustrations. Each case study imaginatively describes a story exploring the impact of assessment and outcome measures on the client work. Arts therapies include art, drama, music and art... The aim of the book is to demonstrate working models in order to promote the use of assessment approaches in every day practice...Strategies are explored for assessing clients as to the suitability of an intervention... At the heart of this book and each case study within it, is the clients experience and understanding... This book is an engaging read and a stride forward in promoting the accessibility of the tools practitioners can utilise to effectively develop their practice in this area... This text is useful for newly qualified practitioners and experienced ones alike. -- Alice Fairbank, Art Psychotherapisst * Play Therapy *What I like about this book is that it contributes to the growing culture shift away from 'therapist knows best' to a more collaborative approach where therapist and patient work things out together... Throughout are worked examples of how a previously medically driven tool can be adapted in such a way as to influence positively the power balance in the therapist-client relationship... this is a timely overview of some of the more useful ways we can demonstrate change, worth a read by any music therapist. -- Anna Maratos, MT * British Journal of Music Therapy *Table of ContentsIntroduction. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Resonant Learning in Music Therapy: A Training
Book SynopsisResonant learning allows students to develop and fine-tune their therapeutic competencies through first-hand experiences: being in client roles themselves, being in preliminary therapist roles with co-students in client roles and reflecting on those experiences. These resonant learning processes are preparatory steps in developing a professional music therapist identity through internship and later employment positions and continuing supervision. Outlining the Aalborg model of resonant learning, developed at Aalborg University, Denmark, Resonant Learning in Music Therapy discusses the benefits and drawbacks of 'tuning the therapist' and encourages its integration into music therapy courses around the world. The book sums up research on resonant learning and presents core exercises, directives and vignettes from the training processes of the Aalborg model. Explaining how students' self-agency is enhanced by long-term personal experiences in group- and individual therapy, observing work with clients in an institutional setting, working with clients themselves, and undergoing close group and individual supervision, the editors and contributors also explore the benefits of implementing resonant learning within other therapist training programs and healthcare professions.Trade ReviewResonant Learning in Music Therapy is highly recommended, demonstrating experiential learning and developmental processes to foster a reflecting music therapy practitioner. -- Gro Trondalen, Ph.D. Norwegian Academy of MusicA magnificent book! Jessica Kingsley Publishers Mindfulness and the Arts Therapies: Theory and
Book SynopsisThis ground-breaking book explores the theoretical, clinical and training application of integrating mindfulness with all of the arts therapies, and includes cutting-edge contributions from neuroscience. Written by pioneers and leaders in the arts therapies and psychology fields, the book includes 6 sections that examine mindfulness and the arts therapies from different perspectives: 1) the history and roots of mindfulness in relation to spirituality, psychotherapy and the arts therapies; 2) the role of the expressive arts in cultivating mindful awareness; 3) innovative approaches that add mindfulness to the arts therapies; 4) arts therapies approaches that are inherently mindfulness-based; 5) mindfulness in the training and education of arts therapists; and 6) the neuroscience underlying mindfulness and the arts therapies. Contributors describe their pioneering work with diverse applications: people with cancer, trauma, chronic pain, substance abuse, severe mental illness, clients in private practice, adolescents at camp, training dance and art therapists, and more. This rich resource will inspire and rejuvenate all clinicians and educators.Trade Review“Mindfulness and the Art Therapies is a wonderful and comprehensive book. This is an important contribution to the growing field of mindfulness. How wonderful that Laury Rappaport has masterly brought to the forefront the importance of mindfulness and art therapies.” -- Bob Stahl, Ph.D., Co-Author of A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook, Living with Your Heart Wide Open, Calming the Rush of Panic, and A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety“Applications of mindfulness and meditation are demonstrating their effectiveness with stress reduction, self-regulation, trauma recovery, and overall quality of life. Likewise, the expressive arts therapies are increasingly embraced as methods of transformation that enhance health and well-being. This impressive book is a timely and seminal contribution to both the current literature on mindfulness and the arts therapies. It incorporates everything helping professionals and students need to know, including the foundations of mindfulness and arts therapies, neurobiology and somatic perspectives, and pragmatic, integrative approaches to applying methods to a variety of populations and settings. Mindfulness and the Arts Therapies brings together the basics of mindfulness and meditation in a practical, accessible way that invites not only arts therapists but also, all mental health and healthcare professionals to cultivate and apply its wisdom to both working with clients and as a personal wellness practice.” -- Cathy Malchiodi, Ph.D., ATR-BC, LPAT, LPCC, Trauma-Informed Practice and Expressive Arts Therapy Institute, and Lesley University“Mindfulness and the arts can play an important role in psychospiritual growth and the evolution of human consciousness. Is the complex consciousness that we call 'mind' and brain the same or different? If you are interested in this question, Drs. Jared D. Kass and Sidney M. Trantham provide a clear and comprehensive roadmap to your evolving understanding in their ambitious chapter in Mindfulness and the Arts Therapies. The authors decipher the most current research in brain science— the autonomic nervous system, polyvagal theory and the stress response, human brain evolution, hemispheric lateralization, attachment theory, pleasure and pain, trauma and PTSD, addiction, self-awareness, empathy, memory, and emotion. They carefully link their discussion of these topics, fostering greater appreciation of the neuroanatomy and physiology of internal composure, resilience, and maturity —in contrast to that of aggression, violence, and destructive coping. Kass and Trantham's chapter, toward the end of this impressive volume, provides an integrative understanding for clinicians, researchers, and anyone interested in mindfulness, meditation, the arts, and the brain.” -- Lawrence Peltz, MD., Author of The Mindful Path to Addiction Recovery: A Practical Guide to Regaining Control Over Your Life“The integration of mindfulness practices and the art therapies is a natural and much needed evolution for clinicians and group facilitators. Dr. Laury Rappaport has brought together a remarkable group of practitioners in this timely book. The authors embrace a broad spectrum of approaches —authentic movement, Focusing-Oriented Arts Therapy, Person-Centered Expressive Arts, drama, poetry, and music therapies, and more—all finding enhanced results of combining deep meditation practices with their arts modality. Theories and concepts are carefully presented with meaningful case material. The last chapter, 'Perspectives from Clinical Neuroscience: Mindfulness and the Therapeutic Use of the Arts' describes how the healing, transformative work we are doing is validated by scientific research. This book contributes new and vital material to the humanistic practices of the arts therapies as enhanced by mindfulness methods.” -- Natalie Rogers, Ph.D., REAT, Author of The Creative Connection for Groups: Person-Centered Expressive Art for Healing and Social Changeand The Creative Connection: Expressive Arts for Healing“Although I sincerely believed that I was a pretty thoughtful art therapist, this book has enabled me to realize that I have not been sufficiently mindful of mindfulness— at least not in the deepest sense of the word. As a painter I often experience an altered state of consciousness in the process of creating, something I value tremendously, but have not named. My psychoanalytic training allowed me to strive for 'evenly hovering attention,' trying to attune my entire self toward the other. Yet now, Laury Rappaport's marvelous collection of writings by expressive arts therapists who have experienced genuine mindfulness—and who know how to name and to promote such states—has opened my spirit to an even more profound way of being-in-the-world asa helper. There is no question that this book is both timely and timeless, as are the arts themselves, and the practice of mindfulness in all of its forms.” -- Judith A. Rubin, Ph.D., ATR-BC, HLM, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center, Author of Approaches to Art Therapy and The Art of Art Therapy“Psychotherapists will find here a rich, practical guide for illuminating how mindfulness can be applied to a variety of art therapies. Rappaport has brilliantly assembled leading pioneers in their respective fields to clearly show how mindfulness offers a basis for healing, growth, and transformation. Her own chapters are notable for offering a clear, compelling integration of Gendlin's Focusing—a very specific kind of mindfulness practice —with the expressive arts. I highly recommend this refreshing and insightful resource.” -- John Amodeo, Ph.D., author of Dancing with Fire: A Mindful Way to Loving Relationships“Gathering together a rich array of creative arts therapists in a single volume, the various authors provide rich illustrations of how mindfulness and creative arts enhance and reflect each other. Readers are presented with a diverse range of practical application, and left with the space to imagine additional ways to apply these concepts in therapy, education and wellness.” -- Jordan S. Potash, Ph.D., ATR-BC, REAT, LCAT, Lecturer, Centre on Behavioral Health and the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong“Finally there is a book that brings together leaders in the field of arts-based therapy, to impart their knowledge of mindfulness-based practice. This innovative and comprehensive book demonstrates the effective use of a 2,500-year practice within the framework of expressive arts for health and well-being. Mindfulness has been utilized in the lexicon through other names such as 'presence' or 'attunement' or 'flow' or 'witnessing' but here, through historical background, theory and current day mindfulness-practices, the authors gathered take contemporary psychological inquiry to a new wave of application and understanding. I am sure this book will have a great impact and be utilized in the training of practitioners for many years to come.” -- Mitchell Kossak, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Expressive Therapies, Lesley University, Executive Co-Chair, International Expressive Arts Therapy AssociationTable of ContentsAcknowledgements. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Art Therapy - The Person-Centred Way: Art and the
Book SynopsisArt Therapy - The Person-Centred Way is an enlarged edition of the first book published on person-centred art therapy, and includes many more exercises and ideas. It demonstrates that by bringing the person-centred facilitative approach to images expressed in art form, healing and growth can occur at every level of development. We need to engage both our verbal and non-verbal intelligence to become integrated. To illustrate the effectiveness of this process, the book chronicles twelve students as they make their way through a year's person-centred art therapy course, sharing their step-by-step difficulties and successes in becoming person-centred, learning from their images, and applying person-centred art therapy in their diverse work settings. The process, based on self-discovered learning, negotiated decision-making, self/peer assessment and certificating, demonstrates the collective aspect of the person-centred approach in action. This radical model can be transposed to a wide range of settings. With its many exercises and illustrations, refreshing ideas, and wide scope of application, this book is a rich resource manual and a must for everyone - both in training and in practice - involved with human development.Trade ReviewThe book provides a fascinating glimpse into the person-centred approach to counselling and art therapy... this is a book which almost demands to be read from cover to cover, not randomly dipped into - Art Therapy - The Person-Centred Way does repay the time and attention given to it. This is, I feel, true for readers who may be largely umfamiliar with the work of Carl Rogers and his followers. Prior to reading Art Therapy - The Person-Centred Way I do not believe I had fully appreciated the core beliefs underpinning the person-centred model or, indeed, how challenging, in some respects, these are to my own psychodynamically informed ones. -- Inscape[A] fascinating account of art therapy training. Silverstone…describes with clarity and transparency her unique hybrid: art and person-centred counselling. Silverstone's book not only illustrates that experience retold is more colourful than `grey theory' but that in this case, it can also offer a valuable insight into a group's life. Busy practitioners can gain much from this 'chatty', non-academic manual of group work ideas [which are] applicable in most settings. -- British Journal of Occupational TherapyAn effective course in person-centred art therapy based on the philosophy which empowers the person and helps make them more self-directed. -- Carl RogersThe book is divided into short chapters which detail the thirty sessions the students had over the year. There are lots of examples, clearly laid out exercises, games, imaging, and suggestions as to applications of those techniques. I can recommend this book not only to those already using this approach but also as an introduction for others who would like the flavour of the technique. -- Health and HygieneThis is a remarkable book. It tells the reader as much about counselling, experiential learning, and "managing" such a course, as it does about art therapy and so should attract a large audience. It should appeal to therapists, artists - and to all those concerned about human wellbeing. For dipping into, for reference purposes, or for a cover-to-cover read, it's well worth a try. -- Growth PointReviews of the previous edition:'It is a study of an exceptional student-centred facilitator at work.' -- Counselling NewsI enjoyed this immensely readable book. Silverstone and her students describe with honesty and sensitivity their development in both individual and collective terms. I would recommend this very interesting and forthright book to anyone who is interested in developments in person-centred therapy or in thinking about the use of art as a therapeutic tool in a person-centred counselling context. -- CounsellingIt is clear that Liesl Silverstone is indeed a uniquely talented teacher, a sensitive therapist and an energetic and effective proponent of the person-centred approach. -- DramatherapyTable of ContentsIntroduction. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic
Book SynopsisRecent research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation, so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum presents a new model of practice, which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviours and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist. The book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work, with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model - methodology and assessment interventions are analysed, as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with individual autistic children demonstrate the use of the model and the outcomes. Throughout the book, it is emphasised how art therapy works as an integral part of overall management and treatment approaches to autism. It will be of particular interest to all those professionals working with autistic children and specialists in other communication disorders.Table of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Free Association Books Forensic Arts Therapies: Anthology of Practice
Book SynopsisThe field of forensic arts therapies is dynamic and diverse, and so this unique volume covers a fascinating range of work. It brings together a collection of presentations given at FATAG conferences, case studies, research, new developments in theory, and explorations in the peculiarities of forensic arts therapies: art, music, drama, and dance. Therapists work with male and female offenders in detained in prisons or secure health care units, or sometimes with patients involved in probation or counselling services, victim support, and other services and institutions concerned with understanding the causes and effects of crime. The experiences described are often difficult, but also very rewarding for all involved. Arts therapy (in any of its forms) regularly has a profound and beneficial effect on the life of an offender. This thought-provoking and enlightening work gives an insight into how these skilled professionals have been a necessary part of UK forensic services for more than four decades. The Forensic Arts Therapies Advisory Group (FATAG) is a voluntary organisation which aims to provide support, advice and opportunities for continuing professional development for arts therapists working in forensic or secure settings and trainee arts therapists on clinical placement in forensics. FATAG provides a safe space to share difficult, complex and, at times, painful work not easily shared amongst a non-forensic audience.Trade ReviewThis book is well overdue but the chapters evidence an authority in sensitive, creative and adaptive arts and psychotherapeutic approaches to the needs of an extremely complex patient group unable to access talking therapies. Facet Publishing Bibliotherapy
Book SynopsisThe basic premise of bibliotherapy is that information, guidance, wellbeing and solace can be found through reading. This book draws on the latest international practical and theoretical developments in bibliotherapy to explore how librarians, healthcare providers and arts organizations can best support the health and wellbeing of their communities. There is no standard approach to bibliotherapy. This book considers how different theories apply to different types of bibliotherapy, using case studies to illustrate how particular approaches can be used across a broad range of settings and with a variety of user groups. By focusing on the theoretical basis and history of bibliotherapy, as well as current practice, it helps to identify areas in which bibliotherapy could grow as a field of study and of practice.Bibliotherapy programmes using books to support good mental health are found around the world. The editors and their contributors present examples from public libraries, academic libraries and healthcare settings internationally – including the UK, North and South America, and Australasia. Collaboration and diversity are key themes: engaging in bibliotherapy offers librarians key opportunities to collaborate with partners outside the profession, while engaging with more diverse audiences. The book will be of interest not only to researchers and theorists, but equally to those managing bibliotherapy programmes in health, public and academic libraries. It will also be very useful for healthcare providers and those with an interest in wellbeing more generally.Trade Review'The book is well referenced and appears on reading to be an authoritative text on the topic. It accomplishes its aim of educating the reader about bibliotherapy as a concept and provides useful examples of how it can be used in a practical context. Given the current interest in mental health and wellbeing amongst the public and healthcare community this is a timely book.'- Sarah Rudd, Clinical Librarian North Bristol NHS Trust * CILIP Health Libraries Group newsletter *'Bibliotherapy is a deep dive into the theoretical framework of reading as a mental health alternative therapy. Readers will hear from experts in the field expanding on the theory of bibliotherapy within the context of both clinical and non-clinical settings. What librarians will find most useful about this book is the case studies. Some ideas for implementation include reading to combat loneliness and promote resilience, long-term impacts of bibliotherapy groups, engaging young people in bibliotherapy, reading for well-being, and bibliotherapy read-aloud groups with native and non-native speakers. Particularly interesting about these case studies is that the implementation methods can be considered for all types of libraries. Studies took place in public, special, and academic libraries. The challenge for librarians is to develop and pilot these programs. Luckily this text provides examples of partnering with outside organizations such as the Department of Health, local hospitals and outpatient facilities, and other nonprofits. The book highlights free resources libraries can use to get bibliotherapy programs off the ground. Libraries could use this book as a way to transform a love of reading into a therapy that can make a meaningful difference in a reader's life. Summing Up: Recommended. As a play therapy supervisor and trainer, I recommend this book as a go-to manual to expand therapists' understanding of how anxiety manifests in children and what play-based interventions are most helpful. Of particular interest are the multiple ways in which parents are included as an integral part of the interventions. This book will have a prominent place in my play therapy library."--Susan M. Carter, PhD, LP, RPT-S, private practice, Kalamazoo, Michigan "With fear, anxiety, and phobias so prevalent in the lives of children, this volume is welcome and timely. Drewes and Schaefer have brought together seasoned international experts and have structured their chapters along a helpful continuum, from developmentally normative fears to more intensive and complex anxiety disorders and posttraumatic issues. The detailed case studies foreground the individual styles and coping strategies of children and families and remind us of the critical role of parent involvement in treatment success. This valuable resource hones in on how to support children in learning to tolerate and move around or through their emotional distress."--Mary Anne Peabody, EdD, LCSW, RPT-S, Social and Behavioral Sciences Program, University of Southern Maine "This wonderful book enables the clinician to engage fearful children, conceptualize the roots of their distress, and provide age-appropriate play-based interventions. The benefits of early intervention and an understanding of neurobiology are highlighted. As a training provider, I was delighted to find simple techniques that parents can be taught, as well as cohesive approaches for implementation by psychotherapists. The book emphasizes the need for informed, integrated clinical decision making rather than reliance on random techniques or a single model when treating children with complex mental health issues. It should be read and referred to regularly by all play therapists and play therapy trainees."--Eileen Prendiville, ECP, Course Director, The Children’s Therapy Centre, Ireland -Stalwarts of play therapy Athena Drewes and Charles Schaefer have teamed up again to edit a wonderfully informative collection of essays focused on a wide array of childhood anxieties from nightmares to posttraumatic anxieties….Many of the authors include a clear and separate section of outcome studies related to their essays. This seems to be an essential feature that can aid clinicians in making informed treatment decisions and help them move beyond an eclectic approach to treating anxiety….A valuable resource, with expert authors and clear, practical, and well-researched strategies for dealing with childhood anxieties….It will serve as a strong resource for client conceptualization, treatment planning, family consultation, and goal setting.--American Journal of Play, 1/31/2019Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Archetypal Artist
Book SynopsisIn this thoughtful and revelatory book, Wood explores enduring and powerful theories on art, creativity, and what Jung called the creative spirit in order to illuminate how artists can truly understand what it means to be a creator.By bringing together insights on creativity from some of depth psychology's most iconic thinkers, such as C.G. Jung, James Hillman, and Joseph Campbell, as well as featuring a selection of creators who have been influenced by these ideas, such as Martha Graham, Mary Oliver, Stanley Kunitz, and Ursula K. Le Guin, this book explores archetypal thought and the role of the artist in society. This unique approach emphasizes the foundational need to understand and work with the unconscious forces that underpin a creative calling, deepening our understanding of the transformational power of creativity, and the vital role of the artist in the modern world.Acting as a touchstone for inquiries into the nature of creativity, and of the soul, this enligTrade ReviewThe Archetypal Artist is a long-awaited offering to the fields of creativity and depth psychology. Scholars, students, artists, ecologists, and activists will find revelation here – it’s an accessible yet intricately woven map of Jungian and archetypal concepts and their relationship to artistic expression. Dr. Mary Wood at once honors the great mystery within the soul of every artist, while leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of deeper understanding. Kim Krans, artist and NY Times bestselling author of The Wild Unknown TarotMary Wood's fine book, carefully researched and presented, draws on her talents as artist, depth psychologist, and scholar. With a keen historical sense and marshalling a wide range of sources, it leads us to recover and reconceptualize the high purpose and calling of the artist as a conduit for the creative depths of the psyche and the expression of soul. Dr. Keiron Le Grice, professor of depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, CaliforniaDr. Mary Wood’s creative vision that inspires The Archetypal Artist is fiercely and delightfully expansive and deep, measured, but not without a tincture of wildness. Her calling to revision the creative spirit in each of us implies that creativity is a spiritual practice—a way of being enthused to sense the world’s sacredness anew. Dennis Patrick Slattery, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Mythology at Pacifica Graduate InstituteIn an exciting and provocative transformation of Jungian and Archetypal Studies, The Archetypal Artist shifts the center of gravity of depth psychology to the artist, rather than the therapist. For surely those conducting images into being through art-making are individuating for the world as well as themselves? By bringing Jung, post-Jungians, Hillman, soul-making and myth into depth psychology’s re-connection of shaman to artist, Wood restores art to its ancestral homes in medicine, religion, divination and magic. Modernity split the psyche, so reducing art into soul-less artifacts. The Archetypal Artist restores the art of life. It shows artworks as a living medium for the soul. This book is soul-juice for anyone who wants to find authenticity in the urge to create. It is essential reading for all who seek for the art of living, as well as for those driven to fashion life into the in-spirited matter of art. Susan Rowland, Ph.D., Depth Psychology, Creativity, and Humanities Professor at Pacifica Graduate InstituteWood has created a magnificent homage to James Hillman; reminding us of his vibrant mind and presence and simultaneously she introduces new generations to a true genius whose creativity continues to evolve in ways that are timeless. Her superbly researched volume unfolds, in very readable ways a comparative study of the meaning of the soul in the world, an idea much needed in our time of loss and disorientation. She helps clinicians bring to the foreground the profound value of art, aesthetics, and creativity as the combined essence of healing. Elwood’s style is very unique in a positive and readable way. The book is paradoxical - it's well anchored in theory, substantial on facts and method and yet poetic and meditative at the same time.
