Taylor & Francis Ltd Bituminous Binders and Mixes Rilem Report
Book SynopsisThe aim of the studies presented in this report is the implementation of rational concepts and testing procedures for the design and manufacture of bituminous materials for applications in pavement construction. Practical test procedures are recommended for binder evaluation, mix design and performance assessment of bituminous materials. The three main topics addressed are binder testing, mix design and mechanical testing of mixtures. Each is examined through interlaboratory tests and there is a literary review of existing practices and methods for the production of polymer modified binders, mixture design and the mechanical properties of mixtures.Trade Review'At a time of profound changes in experimental procedures and specifications for asphalts, this book will be a source of information and reference not only for research scientists but also for highway engineers and practitioners ' - IAT NewsTable of ContentsBituminous binders. Taylor & Francis Ltd Managing Knowledge in the Construction Industry
Book SynopsisKnowledge management presents a new way of understanding organizations and companies, and is especially suited to sophisticated and highly technical firms and operations such as those in the construction industry. This new book draws on hard data from three separate research programs in Sweden and shows how the concept of knowledge can make sense in the construction industry, an industry which can be viewed in essence as being engaged in the material transformation of nature into buildings. In particular it explores and examines three different businesses: a medium sized construction firm; Wingårdh Architecture, Sweden's most prestigious architecture firm; and BESAB, a specialist concrete injection firm working on underground construction. An emerging theme is the situational and context-bound nature of knowledge in the construction industry, thus showing knowledge to be a remarkably heterogeneous concept.A range of readers should find the book useful, from studenTrade Review"Managing Knowledge in the Construction Industry provides a challenging and stimulating account, invoking theoretical resources that are sometimes surprising, but consistently leading to interesting and useful insights.""As a theoretically sophisticated, yet empirically grounded, window into the lived experience of various actors in the construction sector, the book has a great deal to offer."- Nick Marshall, Centre for Research in Innovation Management, University of BrightonTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Pioneers in Public Health
Book SynopsisThe public health movement involved numerous individuals who made the case for change and put new practices into place. However despite a growing interest in how we understand history to inform current evidence-based practice, there is no book focusing on our progressive pioneers in public health and environmental health. This book seeks to fill that gap. It examines carefully selected public and environmental health pioneers who made a real difference to the UKâs health, some with international influence. Many of these pioneers were criticised in their life-times, yet they had the strength of character to know what they were doing was fundamentally right and persevered, often against many odds. Including chapters on: Thomas Fresh John Snow Duncan of Liverpool Margaret McMillan George Cadbury Christopher Addison Margery Spring Rice and others. This book will help readers place pioneers in a wider context and to make more sense of their academic and practitioner work today; how evidence (and what was historically understood by it) underpins modern day practice; and how these visionary pioneers developed their ideas into practice, some not fully appreciated until after their own deaths. Pioneers in Public Health sets the tone for a renewed focus on research into evidence-based public and environmental health, which has become subject of growing international interest in recent years. Trade Review'[a] timely and inspiring book' Environmental Health News"The authors of the 12 contributions to this readable book were asked to write about a pioneer for whom they had great regard, with an overall theme of examining how history informs current evidence-based policy. The result is an overdue focus on the important role environmental health plays in shaping modern themes in the UK and elsewhere, as well as giving insight into the profound effects on beliefs and actions that arise from the era, values and attitudes into which we are born … (Chadwick’s) well documented work is dealt with in Stewart’s excellent introduction, while the chapters cover lesser known pioneers... Even if you know about some or all of these pioneers, you will find new insights and fascinating facts about their lives and works. Stewart’s conclusion to these inspiring accounts is that the battles for public health resonates with our contemporary activities and that some supposedly ‘old fashioned’ views are more progressive, radical and forward thinking than those held by many who are in a position to do something about public health today’. This is a great book not only for students and new professionals but also for environmental health and public health practitioners. It will be invaluable for teaching. Stewart cites the historian Virginia Berridge’s observation that ‘history needs to be part of the process of evidence-based policy’. This book will convince you of this view and may help to develop the next generation of reformers and policy makers." Taylor & Francis Ltd The International Steel Industry
Originally published in 1989. The international steel industry suffered a major decline after the onset of world recession in 1973, perhaps suffering more plant closures and job losses than any other sector. This book analyses the decline, surveying the various factors which have contributed to it, such as changing production strategies, changes in demand and world trade and changing regional production trends. It goes on to examine the impact of decline on steel-making communities, considering the various local, national and international initiatives to assist the affected areas and the way these initiatives have been devised and implemented. The authors conclude that none of these policies has satisfactorily resolved the crisis in the old steel producing areas and that a major crisis in these areas continues. Finally they discuss the social and political options open to these localities for the future.

ISTE Ltd and John Wiley & Sons Inc Physical Properties of Concrete and Concrete
Book SynopsisUnderstanding the rheological properties of fresh concrete, the hydration phenomenon of cement responsible for structuration, the relationship between the characteristics of the porous solid obtained and its mechanical performances or resistance to the aggressive penetration requires a complex knowledge of the physicochemistry of reactive porous materials. The development of simple formulation rules therefore requires the assimilation of this knowledge and a good command of the properties of these materials. The purpose of this book is to provide the mix designer with useful knowledge on granular materials and porous materials, which will enable the innovative design of concrete. Topics covered include the characterization of granular materials, the concepts of porosity and specific surface area, and the transport properties (diffusion and permeation) of concrete. Some of these topics are already covered in other general books dedicated to granular or porous materials. The objective here is to bring them together in one book by adapting them for use by concrete specialists.Applications in the form of exercises are offered at the end of each chapter to enable readers to assimilate the theoretical knowledge and to apply such knowledge to concrete problems encountered in civil engineering.
