  • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Upcoming Insignificance of the American

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis new text analyzes the development of the presidency as the dominant political institution in the United States and raises questions about its future relevance. In this history of the U.S. executive branch from the framing of the Constitution to the Biden administration, author Wilbur C. Rich illuminates the transformation of the presidential role by a variety of extra-constitutional, non-legal forces, technology, and social changes. The book highlights how some presidents nevertheless have managed to maintain relevancy and dominance by adapting to these changes or by introducing changes of their own. For undergraduate students and researchers of presidential history and American political development, this expansive historical overview of the executive branch in America makes a strong case that the significance of the American presidency has declined dramaticallyand perhaps irrevocablyin the modern presidency.Table of Contents1 The Post-Colonial Gentry and Ruminations of Agency 2 Elites’ Fashioning a Front Man 3 The Transmutation of Presidents into Economic Czars 4 Presidents Through Ages of Foreign Policy 5 Desideratum of Staffing—Send in the “Lilliputians” 6 News Reporting and Presidency 7 Presidential Stability and Rapid Change Conclusion

Book SynopsisQuality Standards for Highly Effective Government, Second Edition establishes a new normal in government that will ultimately reinvent the practice of democratic government. The principal catalyst for this change will be the adoption of auditable quality standards within every government entitybased on efficiency, effectiveness, and delivered value. Conventional wisdom says that government is not efficient and not effective but, we are still unsure what works and what is broken in government, where to find some common sense, and where to start to fix it.The problem sounds huge, but the solution is not all that difficult. Quality science can provide a structure for efficiency and effectiveness, democratic institutions can create consensus goals, and auditable standards can show where these issues exist and to what degree. In addition, it can drive change where it must happen, because if you can measure it, you can manage it.Auditable quality standards can makeTable of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1: The Problem and Auditable Quality Standards as SolutionChapter 2: Quality Science as a BackboneChapter 3: The Process Management StandardChapter 4: Scoring the Process Management StandardChapter 5: The System Management StandardChapter 6: Scoring the Systems Management StandardChapter 7: The Aligned Leadership Objectives StandardChapter 8: Auditable Standards as a Catalyst for the FutureChapter 9: Three Necessary StrategiesChapter 10: Necessary Culture and Values

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Stalins Constitution

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisUpon its adoption in December 1936, Soviet leaders hailed the new so-called Stalin Constitution as the most democratic in the world. Scholars have long scoffed at this claim, noting that the mass repression of 19371938 that followed rendered it a hollow document. This study does not address these competing claims, but rather focuses on the six-month long popular discussion of the draft Constitution, which preceded its formal adoption in December 1936. Drawing on rich archival sources, this book uses the discussion of the draft 1936 Constitution to examine discourse between the central state leadership and citizens about the new Soviet social contract, which delineated the roles the state and citizens should play in developing socialism. For the central leadership, mobilizing its citizenry in a variety of state building campaigns was the main goal of the discussion of the draft Constitution. However, the goals of the central leadership at times stood in stark contrast with tTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Citizenship and a Social Contract: The Drafting of the 1936 Constitution 2. Book SynopsisTo understand the growth of Western constitutional thought, we need to consider both ecclesiology and political theory, ideas about the Church as well as ideas about the state. In this book Professor Tierney traces the interplay between ecclesiastical and secular theories of government from the twelfth century to the seventeenth. He shows how ideas revived from the ancient past - Roman law, Aristotelian political philosophy, teachings of Church fathers - interacted with the realities of medieval society to produce distinctively new doctrines of constitutional government in Church and state. The study moves from the Roman and canon lawyers of the twelfth century to various thirteenth-century theories of consent; later sections consider fifteenth-century conciliarism and aspects of seventeenth-century constitutional thought. Fresh approaches are suggested to the work of several figures of central importance in the history of Western political theory. Among the authors considered are ThomTable of Contents1. • Cambridge University Press A Most Masculine State Gender Politics and Religion in Saudi Arabia 43 Cambridge Middle East Studies

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWomen in Saudi Arabia are often described as either victims of patriarchal religion and society or successful survivors of discrimination imposed on them by others. Madawi Al-Rasheed's new book goes beyond these conventional tropes to probe the historical, political and religious forces that have, across the years, delayed and thwarted their emancipation. The book demonstrates how, under the patronage of the state and its religious nationalism, women have become hostage to contradictory political projects that on the one hand demand female piety, and on the other hand encourage modernity. Drawing on state documents, media sources and interviews with women from across Saudi society, the book examines the intersection between gender, religion and politics to explain these contradictions and to show that, despite these restraints, vibrant debates on the question of women are opening up as the struggle for recognition and equality finally gets under way.Trade Review'This book deserves praise - and more importantly - to be read by those with an interest in Saudi Arabia or a desire to learn more about the factors and mechanisms that contribute to women's continued marginalisation worldwide.' The Times Higher Education Supplement'Al-Rasheed demonstrates the centrality of women in a state that draws its legitimacy from its fidelity to the sectarian ideology that presided over its birth in the 19th century. The author depicts the relationship between state and Wahabism (deemed a form of 'religious nationalism') as close, albeit fraught with tensions … the book is timely, lucid, and filled with insights into the lives of these still little-known women. Summing up: recommended. All academic levels/libraries.' M. Lazreg, Choice'What makes the book so rewarding and useful is, first, the thoughtful, richly detailed historical context it provides for understanding women's education, the regulations of women's bodies and sexuality, and the place of women in business relations in Saudi Arabia over the span of several decades. But Al-Rasheed is also very attentive to both the state-centered mythologizing and religious discourse-making that goes into the maintenance of gender relations, as well as the contestation over the boundaries of control … For now, her readers will be grateful for such a sympathetically critical guide to the way so many Saudi women live today.'
