Book SynopsisThis book documents the conversion and restoration project of the Grande Carrière Wincqz in Soignies, Belgium. Built in the 19th century to excavate the world-renowned Belgian blue stone, today, the quarry is home to an ambitious project: the Pôle de la Pierre, a training centre specialising in the stone industry. The book covers the transformation of the site in three essays: a photographic essay by Marie Noëlle Dailly exploring the interior and exterior spaces and landscapes of the transformed site a conceptual essay inscribing the Soignies project in the more general context of the reuse of industrial heritage; a graphic essay that reconstructs the transformation of the site as a process of place-making as well as a collective process of meaning-making by means of documents, photographs of the construction phases, drawings, and sketches. Book SynopsisThis Guide provides information on special topics that affect the fire safety performance of very tall buildings, their occupants and first responders during a fire. This Guide addresses these topics as part of the overall building design process using performance-based fire protection engineering concepts as described in the SFPE Engineering Guide to Performance Based Fire Protection. This Guide is not intended to be a recommended practice or a document that is suitable for adoption as a code. The Guide pertains to “super tall,” “very tall” and “tall” buildings. Throughout this Guide, all such buildings are called “very tall buildings.” These buildings are characterized by heights that impose fire protection challenges; they require special attention beyond the protection features typically provided by traditional fire protection methods.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow to deal with historic buildings has long been a core issue of the international architectural discourse. Herzog & de Meuron began addressing the potential of existing structures very early on: the maintenance and alteration of buildings are among the key strategies of the architects. For the Park Avenue Armory in New York, Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new model for dealing with monuments. The historical building was opened in 1881 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as a meeting place and training ground for the National Guard, and boasts a rich mixture of different styles. Herzog & de Meuron developed a multifaceted strategy for the transformation of the building, now used as a cultural center, that allows for a combination of restoration, transformation, and innovation. From the exposing of historic structures to the addition of new elements, the architecture gained new vibrancy from the considered entanglement of different aspects. In the current debate, this departure from the practice of historic preservation in the United States is, beyond its value as an actual example, a unique contribution that unfolds in close reference to material. It is exemplary and groundbreaking.

  • Spatial analysis and social spaces: Interdisciplinary approaches to the interpretation of prehistoric and historic built environments

De Gruyter Spatial analysis and social spaces: Interdisciplinary approaches to the interpretation of prehistoric and historic built environments

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the past decade a range of formal spatial analysis methods has been developed for the study of human engagement, experience and socialisation within the built environment. Many, although not all, of these emanate from the fields of architectural and urban studies, and draw upon social theories of space that lay emphasis on the role of visibility, movement, and accessibility in the built environment. These approaches are now gaining in popularity among researchers of prehistoric and historic built spaces and are given increasingly more weight in the interpretation of past urban environments. Spatial Analysis and Social Spaces brings together contributions from specialists in archaeology, social theory, and urban planning who explore the theoretical and methodological frameworks associated with the application of new and established spatial analysis methods in past built environments. The focus is mainly on more recent computer-based approaches and on techniques such as access analysis, visibility graph analysis, isovist analysis, agent-based models of pedestrian movement, and 3D visibility approaches. The contributors to this volume examine the relationship between space and social life from many different perspectives, and provide illuminating examples from the archaeology of Greece, Italy and Cyprus, in which intra-site analysis offers valuable insights into the built spaces and societies under study.

Book SynopsisFor Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, monument protection is associated with challenges, but also opportunities. The volume sums up the history of monument protection, reflects on issues of building culture and provides examples of how 20th century architecture can be interpreted. The Sovietization of the Baltic region, which began in 1940, resulted in a multifaceted approach to monument protection issues, as these opened up certain scope for national self-expression even under Soviet rule. Since statehood was regained in 1991, there has also been the question of adequate protection for architectural monuments from the period of independence from 1918 or the Soviet era. At the same time, historically determined forms of building culture became visible, which appear specifically Baltic. The articles in this volume enable observations and comparisons to be made.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book tells the fascinating history of the Byzantine Palace of Mistras, erected in the mid-13th century and later expanded to become the seat of the Byzantine governors. From the mid-14th century it was the seat of the Despots of Mistras, and the administrative centre around which commerce and culture flourished during the final phase of the Byzantine Empire. The palace reached its final form with the extensions made at the beginning of the 15th century; it was abandoned in the 18th century and decayed into a three-storey ruin until our times. These ruins, which are described in detail, were investigated, and documented in an extensive photographic archive, leading to a plan for the Palace's restoration according to its original form. The organisation of the restoration work, the techniques employed and the structural details of the building are discussed here in great detail, revealing the Palace in its restored form. Roli Books Pvt Ltd Pondicherry: That Was Once French India

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisAt the pinnacle of French power in India, Pondicherry sparked the imagination of those back home. Pondicherry was the French window on Indian culture, proudly seen as the Gallic Gateway of India. For over three centuries this gateway witnessed the busy trade of spices, beautiful textiles, woven cloth and later peanuts in return for a steady flow of gold, silver, weapons, merchants, priests, soldiers and adventurers. Later, as the English tightened their noose around Pondicherry, the beleaguered French were caught up in their own fateful and impossible attempt to combine colonial and republican principles. History was played out street by street in old Pondicherry and the wealth of these experiences have left an indelible mark on the unique cosmopolitan city that is Pondicherry today. The purpose of this book is to present a brief, illustrated history of these places that once were French.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSoutheast Asia's 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites make a significant contribution to their respective country's national prestige and identity, international profile and tourism development plans. Yet, although much is known about some individual sites like Angkor and Borobudur, we know very little about all sites in comparative terms. This wide-ranging study explores how both cultural and natural sites are being managed, how they are coping with the conflicting pressures from the global, national and local levels, and points to best practices for their future conservation and development. Some 20 sites across seven countries in the region are examined and placed in a historical, political, economic, environmental and cultural context. The contributors also focus on the tensions that exist between the often competing interests, understandings and agendas of the various stakeholders involved in these globally important sites. Although the importance of World Heritage Sites carries their significance and influence beyond their borders in that they are part of national and international flows of people, capital, ideas, images and values, they are also defined, bounded and localized spaces within which there are encounters, exchanges and conflicts. The first volume to address issues raised by world heritage in Southeast Asia, it will be a key resource for academic researchers and for policy- and decision-makers in this field of studies. This volume on world heritage and tourism completes a trilogy of publications by Professor King on tourism-related issues. The two earlier volumes - Tourism in Southeast Asia: Challenges and New Directions (2009) and Heritage Tourism in Southeast Asia (2010) - were jointly published by NIAS Press and the University of Hawai'i Press.

The primary purpose of overlays is to extend the life of the candidate structures, either by restoring the quality and integrity of the surface and/or the re-establishing or improving the load-carrying capacity. Nevertheless, the durability of bonded overlay systems still draws concerns in the technical community because of bond sustainability problems encountered in a number of cases. At this time, there is still no accepted design approach or methodology that can warrant the practitioner a successful outcome of the repair. This State-of-Art report summarizes the findings with respect to all aspects involved in the overlaying process.Table of ContentsTC 193-RLS – Technical Committee Members; Foreword; 1 Introduction, by J.-L.
