For Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, monument protection is associated with challenges, but also opportunities. The volume sums up the history of monument protection, reflects on issues of building culture and provides examples of how 20th century architecture can be interpreted. The Sovietization of the Baltic region, which began in 1940, resulted in a multifaceted approach to monument protection issues, as these opened up certain scope for national self-expression even under Soviet rule. Since statehood was regained in 1991, there has also been the question of adequate protection for architectural monuments from the period of independence from 1918 or the Soviet era. At the same time, historically determined forms of building culture became visible, which appear specifically Baltic. The articles in this volume enable observations and comparisons to be made.
