  • Natural Treatments for Lyme Coinfections:

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Natural Treatments for Lyme Coinfections:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHarvard researchers estimate there are nearly 250,000 new Lyme disease infections each year--only 10 percent of which will be accurately diagnosed. One of the largest factors in misdiagnosis of Lyme is the presence of other tick-borne infections, which mask or aggravate the symptoms of Lyme disease as well as complicate treatment. Three newly emergent Lyme coinfections are Babesia, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma. Tens of thousands of people are known to be asymptomatically infected and at least ten percent will become symptomatic this year--with symptoms ranging from chronic headache and arthritis to seizures. Distilling the latest scientific research on Babesia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Lyme disease, Stephen Buhner examines the complex synergy between these infections and reveals how they can go undiagnosed or resurface after antibiotic treatment. He explains how these organisms create cytokine cascades in the body--essentially sending the immune system into an overblown, uncontrolled inflammatory response in much the same way rheumatoid arthritis or cancer can. Providing an in-depth guide for those suffering from Babesia, Ehrlichia, or Anaplasma infection as well as for clinicians who work with those infected by these organisms, Buhner details effective natural holistic methods centered on herbs and supplements, such as Ashwaganda and Chinese Skullcap, and reveals how to treat specific symptoms, interrupt the cytokine cascades, reduce inflammation, and bring the immune system back into balance. He explains how these natural methods not only complement conventional Lyme disease treatments involving antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals but also provide relief when other forms of treatment have failed.Trade Review“Stephen Harrod Buhner’s new book, Natural Treatments for Lyme Coinfections, is a brilliant follow up of his previous groundbreaking books Healing Lyme and Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections. This is a must read for medical practitioners and patients, providing a deep understanding of how these microorganisms have evolved and relate to their intricate ecosystems. Stephen insists that it is not possible to successfully treat these evolving microbes without a full grasp of this information. For example, knowing that Babesia requires red blood cells, endothelial cells, and spleen tissues to reproduce and understanding the biochemistry of how this happens allows him to provide a clear roadmap of how to approach treatment properly. This roadmap has not been available until now. Thank you, Stephen!” * Neil Nathan, M.D., board certified family physician and author of Healing Is Possible *“Stephen Harrod Buhner is performing important work in disseminating this information to patients and their clinicians. Many with chronic Lyme suffer from undiagnosed coinfections and would benefit from the entourage effects and herbal synergies of medicinal plants. Relief is available in the natural world, a true alternative treatment, beyond the reach of the medical bureaucracy.” * Julie Holland, M.D., author of Weekend at Bellevue *“In this newest volume of Stephen Buhner’s exploration of Lyme and its coinfections, he again excels in presenting an enormous amount of detailed information in a thorough and accessible manner, offering what readers need most in such a tome: the knowledge to make their own informed decisions in addressing these issues.” * Jim McDonald, Herbalist *Table of ContentsHow to Use This Book and Who It Is For 1 Emerging Diseases and Coinfections: The New Epidemics 2 Babesia: An Overview 3 Babesia: A Deeper Look 4 Natural Healing of Babesia 5 Ehrlichia and Anaplasma: An Overview 6 Ehrlichia and Anaplasma: A Deeper Look 7 Natural Healing of Ehrlichia and Anaplasma 8 Acute Infections, Sepsis, and Septic Shock 9 The Materia Medica 10 What the Future Holds Appendix The Sophisticated Synergy of Plant Compounds: Standardization Rant (Wonkish) Sources of Supply and a Few Good Practitioners Acronyms Used in This Book Works Cited Bibliography Index

  • Plant Medicine: A Collection of the Teachings of

Aeon Books Ltd Plant Medicine: A Collection of the Teachings of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA comprehensive compendium on the theory and practice of herbal medicine from expert herbalists Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw. This fundamental textbook draws on the wisdom of Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw, incorporating their belief in the importance of understanding herbal medicine in the context of living plants, and providing lived examples of how this can be used in the everyday practice of herbal medicine. Through these teachings, the book also acquaints readers with the rich legacy of Christopher and Non in Western herbal medicine. Drawing on Christopher's own approach to teaching herbalism, which was abundant with the importance of storytelling in learning, Plant Medicine is as fascinating as it is accessible, enriched with the depth of Christopher's own knowledge and warmth. The book is comprised of four parts: 'Roots' explores the history of plant medicine, investigating physiomedicalism and Galenic humoral medicine. The second section, 'Flowers', is a thorough, alphabetically ordered materia medica of the medicinal properties of individual plants, with properties, uses, preparations, dosage, cautions, and clinical uses of ninety-two plant medicines that Non and Christopher gathered over nearly two lifetimes. 'Fruits' provides information on how particular body systems and patient groups are treated therapeutically with herbal medicines, specifically covering the digestive, cardiovascular, nervous, urinary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, skin and immune systems. Finally, 'Seeds' concludes the book by inviting readers to consider going deeper and beyond their exploration of plant medicine, shifting their preconceptions of herbs to understand them on a more intimate level. Plant Medicine is a foundational text for all students and practitioners of herbal medicine, but it's wisdom and insight will also provide a guiding light for anyone seeking plant medicine as a way to reconnect to the abundance and beauty of nature.Trade ReviewPlant Medicine delivers an uncommon depth of experience-based practical information. Based in the Physiomedical and Western humoral medical traditions, with reference also to Chinese medicine, it offers well-discerned clinical monographs on contemporary materia medica, and practical therapeutics by body systems and patient groups, documenting the authors’ mastery over six decades of busy clinical practice between them in medical herbalism. A must-have for professional and student alike. Paul Bergner, director of the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism and editor of The Medical Herbalism Journal Christopher Hedley is unforgettable to so many of us who knew and loved him, a kind and caring man, clever and unique, lively, funny, and inspiring. He was able to offer exceptional empathy and support to his many patients, understanding their physical and emotional needs and using his skills to heal and restore. He was a celebrated herbalist and naturalist with an extensive knowledge of herbal history and traditional practices which he skilfully interpreted into his own practice and shared with his students and colleagues. His teachings continue to offer a valuable and unique resource to all who study them. Dr Julie Whitehouse, principal lecturer at the University of Westminster (retired) There is a beautiful ease in the way Herbal Medicines are able to help the human body. However, learning the craft properly can be tricky. So many names and terms to learn and then every plant seems to be able to do everything, as you begin to learn the living language that is Herbal Medicine. What you really crave along this path of learning is someone to say, ‘I have used this plant in this way and for these reasons to restore health and my experience shows this to be effective.’ Non and Christopher personified that ethos and this book shines with it. Keith Robertson MSc. FNIMH, director of education at the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine, Isle of Arran, Scotland The words “brilliant”, “magical” and “legendary” are often used and misused when describing books, art, films, music and people. In this case, the collected works of herbalists Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw actually are all three and probably more. It is difficult for a book to convey the humour, humility, profound wisdom and astonishing insights that Non and Christopher brought to their work and teachings, but I believe it succeeds brilliantly, giving you the reader entry into their herbal world, one that more people should know and undoubtably appreciate. David Winston RH(AHG), DSc(hc), author of Adaptogens, Herbs for Strength, Stamina and Stress Relief. Christopher and Non inspired a whole generation of herbalists towards ‘being plant’. This collection of their teachings, placed in context by thoughtful contributions from their friend and colleague Guy Waddell, has that same ability to convey profound understanding with lightness and humour. Deep knowledge of the traditions of herbal medicine is placed alongside careful study of its science, all informed by their intensely creative artistic insights. Every now and then a seemingly simple turn of phrase will stop you in your tracks to absorb the new perspective that it opens up. It is a joy to hear these much loved voices again. Robyn Soma, President of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. Christopher's writings give you deep herbal wisdom in an easy to read form. Plant Medicine contains an introduction to humoral theory, an extensive materia medica, and a section on herbs for various organ systems with case histories. So very illuminating. So many insights! Such an exquisite book. Thank you Christopher and Non, for all you did. Henriette Kress, herbalist, Finland, and author of Practical Herbs The herbal legacy of Chris Hedley and Non Shaw (who both died in 2017) has been secured in two Aeon books beautifully edited by Guy Waddell. It is the lasting recognition Chris and Non deserve. Together these books are perfect sources for anyone wanting a home study course in modern western herbalism. The same applies if you are a formal herbal student at any level or indeed a practitioner. Plant Medicine (2023) is the theory and detailed materia medica you need, and The Herbal Book of Making and Taking (2020) the practical guidance to make any herbal remedy. Listen to these voices of experience and trust their wisdom! All those in the herbal community should be grateful to Aeon for backing and producing these two defining books. Suddenly I Ching trigrams, ten-stem/twelve-branch Chinese calendar, yin-yang, five-phase, twelve hour body-clock and six channel medical theories all leap into sharp, unified focus. More amazingly, Twicken turns theory into easily grasped 'how-to' practice. Finally we have a clear map of Taoist body channels, natural models of healing and life-balance that acupuncturists, taiji and qigong players, energy healers, and feng shui and astrology adepts cannot do without. -- Michael Winn, founder of HealingTaoUSA.com and co-author of seven Tao books with Mantak ChiaIn Classical Chinese Medicine, the highest level doctors utilize the Yijing to deepen their understanding of the medicine itself, and to enhance their clinical results. In his book I Ching Acupuncture - The Balance Method, David Twicken provides the serious practitioner a method for far-reaching healing through the guidance of the Yijing. -- Master Zhongxian Wu, lineage holder of four schools of qigong and martial arts, and author of Vital Breath of the Dao, Seeking the Spirit of the Book of Change and Chinese Shamanic Cosmic Orbit QigongThere have been many books on the I Ching and Acupuncture, but rarely with such clear integration of a deeper and thorough understanding of this ancient philosophy and wisdom. David Twicken's book has given the readers what we need to know, 'The Balance Method' in learning and partaking in these treasures from the sages of the old China. -- Master Chungliang Al Huang, founder of Living Tao Foundation and author of Embrace Tiger, Return To Mountain, Essential Tai Ji, Quantum Soup and The Chinese Book of Animal PowersPractitioners and enthusiasts of feng shui alike will discover far-reaching new insights about its underpinning elements in this new book by David Twicken... David has succeeded in translating complex theoretical information into easily read, practical applications with clarity and simplicity... the information he shares will be of direct value to feng shui practitioners... • Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTraditional Chinese medicine has a long and complex history, yet the basic principles at the heart of practice have remained the same for hundreds of years. Without a solid understanding of these fundamental theories, effective practice is impossible, and this book provides a complete introduction to everything that students and practitioners, both new and experienced, need to know. The book describes and explains all of the fundamental principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including yin/yang, the five elements, the 'zang and fu' organs, Zang Xiang, Qi, and the meridians and collaterals of the body. Explaining not only the principles upon which these elements work, but also how they interrelate, the book describes how they can be used in practice to identify, treat and prevent ill-health and disease. This thorough and accessible textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial directorship of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is essential reading for students of traditional Chinese medicine, and is also a useful basic reference for TCM practitioners.Trade ReviewAlthough the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- OMJthe simple descriptions of these ideas are very helpful to a novice and would underpin a much more advanced study of TCM syndromes. -- The JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists)Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... Although modest in size, these texts are packed with information... in terms of portability and cost... they make themselves serious contenders for the college bags of students of Chinese medicine... In terms of visual presentation, other than the obligatory yin-yang and five-phase diagrams, assistance is limited to a few flow diagrams, which may disappoint more visually-orientated learners. This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such... These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese Medicine, Greg MeierAlthough the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- Frank Yurasek Ph. Book SynopsisThe ability to apply complex theory to practice is a vital skill for acupuncturists. Case studies and medical records are an extremely useful resource for understanding how to differentiate between different syndromes, and provide invaluable precedents for deciding upon appropriate methods of diagnosis and treatment. This book presents a collection of real case studies of patients who have been treated by prominent acupuncture practitioners in China. The case studies are divided into five sub-categories of disease, and include information on the patient's medical history, presenting complaint, symptoms, tongue and pulse examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prescription as well as the Western diagnosis. More than 170 different case studies are included in the book, covering 73 different types of syndromes and disease. A useful appendix with the Chinese and English names for these syndromes is also included. Compiled by leading experts at the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, this book is a useful reference for acupuncture practitioners and students at all levels.Trade Reviewthis book is yet another concise learning resource for Traditional Chinese Acupuncturists but practitioners of the western acupuncture approach will find some "nuggets" of treatment techniques that will add to one's therapeutic repertoire. -- Acupuncture in MedicineAS with previous publications by Singing Dragon the production quality is high and the standard of translation generally good throughout... This book also details acute cases not usually seen in Western private practice... One of the standout aspects of this book compared to other compilations of case studies is the detailed description of needling techniques and point combinations...This text constitutes more than just a repeat of TCM axioms and has both challenged my existing understanding of Chinese Medicine and provided insight into experienced practitioners' understanding and application of TCM theory. I can therefore recommend this book as a useful resource for both students and experienced practitioners. -- Journal of Chinese MedicineTable of ContentsPreface. Foreword. Introduction. Section 1. Book SynopsisA treasure trove of valuable information and a fascinating distillation of the wisdom that Margi Flint has gained during her practice as a herbalist of almost fifty years, in the theory and practice of running a thriving herbal business. “With all the skill of a master alchemist, Margi weaves together her years of experience as an herbal practitioner with the best of the teachings and the teachers she’s studied with. She stirs in just the right amount of honey, a bit of sass, and a healthy dollop of humor to bring us one of the most eminently useful books on herbal practice available today. There’s so much wisdom here, so much depth, and so much practical information distilled into these remarkably interesting pages. But even more, there’s so much generosity of spirit as Margi invites us into her heart and home and shares with us her deeply personal journey as an herbal practitioner.” Rosemary Gladstar, Herbalist and Author “What a pleasure and a treasure to have all of Margi’s wisdom, experience and ever-useful insights into the art and practice of herbalism. This book will not only serve students and teachers of herbs, but all consumers of health care in search of good medicine.” Kathleen Maier, Sacred Plant Traditions “What a great accumulation of vital observation and herbal tidbits! In addition, I see it as a very useful reference for practicing herbalists searching for specific information on facial, tongue, and pulse conformation. A good guide on how to sort information from the client intake. It is essential for parents of children with autism or individuals with autism who have made the decision to incorporate animal service or therapy into their lives. This book would also be incredibly useful for animal trainers, especially those belonging to service organizations who are considering accommodating individuals with autism in their service and therapy schemes. -- Journal of Autism and Developmental DisordersWhen I first received 'Animal-Assisted Interventions for Individuals with Autism' for review, I half expected it to be a cheerleading book filled with anecdotes about the panacea of using animals with those affected by autism. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to find a well-written book that is well researched and addresses my interests and concerns as a psychologist new to the area of animal-assisted interventions. -- PsycCRITIQUES[E]ssential reading for families, teachers, and anyone who is interested in using service animals to help individuals on the autism spectrum -- from the foreword by Temple GrandinThis book looks at how therapies involving animals can be used to help individuals with autism to develop skill, including sensory and social skills, to manage challenging behaviors, and improve quality of life.Whether participating in therapeutic horseback riding, utilizing a trained service dog, visiting a dolphin therapy center, or simply experiencing companion animal therapy, people with autism can reap a multitude of beneifits from interaction with furry, feathered, and finned friends. With recommendations for resources and further reading, this book wull be of great interest to people with autism, their parents, and the professionals who work with them. -- Autism UsDid you know that dogs may be trained to help children with autism? I didn't until I read this fascinating book. The book contains many heart warming case studies describing how the child's quality of life has been improved through their interaction with animals. Book SynopsisThe most important classical text of Chinese Medicine, The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Chinese Medicine is often seen as daunting by students who are faced with a variety of different translations, of which some may not be reliable. This introductory guide makes it accessible to all, providing a summary of each chapter which emphasises the clinical relevance of the text. The author draws out how the text can be used to inform and improve clinical practice. It avoids overly scholarly discussions, and does not dwell on the minutiae of translation, making this book an easy and enlightening read.Trade ReviewAlthough the Neijing is arguably the most influential text in the history of Chinese medicine, it is one often unread and unexamined by modern clinicians. As a teacher of the Neijing, what I've found lacking is a book that summarizes the text - a book that draws out the marrow of the contents and presents it in a user-friendly way. Dr. Chang's book will fill this gap in providing readers an overview of each of the chapters in the Neijing Suwen. By providing a focused look at the chapters' key aspects, Chang provides newcomers with an easy entry into study, and experienced readers of the Neijing a quick reference to the essentials. -- Dr. Henry McCann, Doctoral Faculty for the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, Director for the Institute for Classical Asian MedicineTable of ContentsTBC

Book SynopsisThis book considers death and loss within Chinese Medicine and related Taoist models, and offers practical advice and techniques, effective recommendations and appropriate exercises for those working in palliative care, with grieving, frail or dying clients.Grainger examines the different ways that practitioners might encounter death and loss - including working in end-of-life care, with those facing terminal illness, affected by bereavement, suicide or miscarriage - in the context of different ages, religious and cultural backgrounds, and offers a model for teaching.Working with Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice is the go-to text for practitioners wishing to improve their expertise and confidence when working with people at a vulnerable time in a respectful, open-hearted and compassionate manner.Trade ReviewAn invaluable resource for all touch therapists drawn to working at this edge of life. Weaving her own extensive experience together with guidance on every conceivable aspect of the subject, Tamsin Grainger balances poignant case studies with the discipline, self-reflection and professionalism that end-of-life care demands. A truly impressive achievement! -- Nick Pole, Shiatsu teacher and author of Words That Touch: How to ask questions your body can answer (Singing Dragon 2017)This is a wonderful book, and a gift to any Shiatsu practitioner. In our practice we often encounter grief loss and death (in all its forms). Tamsin has comprehensively researched every conceivable aspect of the subject, from different Shiatsu ways of interpreting grieving behaviour to the differences the practitioner may encounter between working in a hospital or in a hospice. Many moving and memorable case histories illustrate her theme, some her own, some from other practitioners. I loved her use of tables to clarify and explain, in particular one table - how brave, bold and entirely appropriate in Shiatsu literature! - where she lists her experiences of feeling different kinds of Ki movement in receivers' diverse emotional responses to the prospect of death. Her voice is direct, compassionate and honest. I will be learning from and enjoying this book for years to come. -- Carola Beresford-Cooke, author of Shiatsu Theory and PracticeWorking With Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice is invaluable for students of Shiatsu as well as for experienced practitioners, whether they work with very sick and dying clients or not.
