Book SynopsisScientists now agree that most disease states are caused by oxygen starvation at a cellular level. Polluted air, devitalized foods, and poor breathing habits can all lead to chronic oxygen deficiency, a bodily environment in which toxins thrive as the overall immune response is weakened. Through oxidative therapies--the medical use of ozone (O3) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)--we can assist the body in generating the oxygen needed to oxidate viruses and bacteria as well as weak and sick tissue cells, so stronger and healthier cells can take their place. The author also explores the expanding use of oxidative therapies in veterinary medicine and dentistry, including their success in treating cavities and preventing infection. Providing a detailed resource section, he explains how to combine oxidative therapies with holistic methods, such as fasting, detox therapies, herbal medicine, and nutritional healing, for a stronger start on the path to optimum health.Trade Review“The simplest remedies are often the most effective. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisRooted in the Su Wen and Ling Shu, Dr. Twicken's book integrates Chinese and Taoist medical philosophy, theories, and principles to clearly demonstrate that the Divergent Channels are an essential aspect of the clinical practice of acupuncture. He takes a step-by-step approach to assist practitioners in 'working out' the channels, and shows how this versatile channel system can be used in any acupuncture treatment. Twicken also includes instruction on Five Shen Nei Dan inner meditation to help practitioners gain a more profound emotional and spiritual understanding. With case studies and reference to the classic texts throughout, this book provides a complete resource that will help clinicians understand and use the Divergent Channels in clinical practice. An accessible and comprehensive account of the Divergent Channel system, this book will be a valuable addition to the shelves of students and practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine; taiji and qigong practitioners; and anyone with an interest in Taoist practice.Trade ReviewThe Divergent Channels have fascinated acupuncturists for generations, but the medical classics offer little information beyond simple pathway descriptions and the admonition that they are important to know. In this text David Twicken, an experienced practitioner of both Chinese medicine and Taoist (Daoist) inner alchemy, offers readers both a working clinical model of Divergent Channels and a window into his own deep exploration of these topics. Twicken also uses the clinical information as a jumping off point to describe the actual process of alchemy. This book challenges us to consider that there is much more to acupuncture practice than just the regular channels. -- Dr. Henry McCann, DAOM, Lac, author of Pricking the Vessels: Bloodletting Therapy in Chinese MedicineTaoist healing is based on the cosmic and microcosmic flow of qi in the universe and within the body. David Twicken presents a detailed description of the energy flows of the divergent channels and how to apply them in clinical practice. Twicken also presents a comprehensive ancient Taoist Nei Dan meditation to transform emotions into vitality and rejuvenating qi. The clinical applications and the Nei Dan practice are essential parts of Taoist healing. I highly recommend The Divergent Channels - Jing Bie: A Handbook for Clinical Practice and Five Shen Nei Dan Inner Meditation to healers of all traditions. -- Taoist Grandmaster Mantak Chia, Founder of the Universal Healing Tao and Tao Garden, and author of Healing Light of the Tao, Taoist Cosmic Healing, Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao and Chi Nei Tsang: Chi Massage for the Vital OrgansDr. David Twicken is one of the preeminent voices and teachers within American acupuncture. Part of his gifts lie in providing a clear context and explanation of Classical Chinese Medicine while providing practical clinical application. The results are treatments that are dynamic and flexible that aid patients in the transformation of their health conditions. I've had the great honor of learning directly under Dr. Twicken and the results of his treatment approaches, including divergent channel treatments, have been phenomenal. Patients have not only reported having significant improvement in chronic symptoms but also profound spiritual experiences that I haven't found with other treatment approaches. -- Stephen Chee, MD, Board certified Family Physician, Faculty at 2 Chinese medicine programsThis is my new favorite of Dr. Twicken's many books displaying his masterful grasp of Taoist cycles, I Ching, and Chinese bio-psycho-spiritual medicine. It's a brilliant summary of how divergent channels integrate the 14 major treatment strategies and 9 needling methods. He deciphers the complicated Su Wen and Lingshu classics for us, with practical and elegant divergent strategies linking 8 Extra Vessels/bone marrow, 12 organ meridians, muscle/tendon and skin levels. Especially valuable are four chapters on Neidan Five Shen, Cauldron and Orbit meditations that allow anyone to directly penetrate the psycho-energetic depths of their body's Qi channels. Dr. Twicken has outdone himself. This fascinating book is a must-have for both healing professionals and Tao meditators seeking a lucid map of what's possible. -- Michael Winn, co-wrote 7 books with Mantak Chia, author of 10 neidan homestudy courses, founder of Healing Tao University in North CarolinaTable of ContentsAuthor Note. Book SynopsisThis practical and engaging coloring book helps yoga teachers and students develop their knowledge of the human body. Enhancing your yoga anatomy knowledge beyond basic training can improve your understanding of the biomechanics of the human body as well as how to reduce chances of injury. Katie Lynch covers physiology of the breath, movements of the joints, workings of the spine, shoulders and pelvis and in-depth muscle information, providing anatomical drawings to color in and so allowing learners to visually connect with the new information. The second part of the book introduces Asana Anatomy specifically related to yoga postures, which shows the reader how to break down the knowledge and apply it to specific asanas. Featuring 100+ illustrations and backed by rigorous scientific knowledge, it is the ultimate tool for all those interested in practising yoga effectively and safely.Trade ReviewThis is a comprehensive visual guide to muscles, bones, joints and movement patterns as they relate to yoga. Even for those who are less interested in colouring, the book provides a useful refresher of yoga anatomy for trainee and established teachers alike. I particularly liked the section on asana anatomy which is a handy reminder of what is happening in the body when we practise selected poses. -- Sian O'Neill, Editor, Yoga Teaching Handbook and Yoga Student HandbookKatie Lynch's Complete Yoga Anatomy Colouring Book is a happy addition to my library of yoga books. Colouring has long been recognised for its therapeutic qualities, and the mindful act of colouring in images of muscles we use every day on our yoga mat reinforces and deepens the awareness in a very gentle, considerate manner. We don't have to stress ourselves by being out-faced with long words we feel we have to remember: as if by magic, the words accompany the images we have brought to life through colouring. This awareness in turn seeps into our practice, and we are able to relate more organically with our iliopsoas as we manoeuvre from Virabhadrasana I to II, say; or we are able to more fully comprehend the incredible power of the diaphragm as we hang out in Urdhva Dhanurasana; or, having moved our nicely sharpened crayon over the attachment for the soleus muscle, it is as if switching on an inner illumination. Aha! So that's where it attaches. Last week I didn't even know it existed ... And so, as our neurons bend, flex, extend and rotate, abduct and adduct - both internally and externally - to the inner rhythm, we regress to progress. Whether one is a yoga practitioner, teacher, student, student teacher or teacher of teachers - or all of the above - this is a book worth making time for. -- Wendy TeasdillThis will make understanding asana and the interaction of the muscles so much easier. A must for new teachers, but will also help established teachers to re-inspire our teaching or sharpen our understanding. * Hazel Faithfull, BWY Teacher *Table of ContentsSection one: Anatomy. 1. • Disease, Karma and Healing: Spiritual-Scientific

Rudolf Steiner Press Disease, Karma and Healing: Spiritual-Scientific

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisToday, illness is almost universally regarded as either a nuisance or a grave misfortune. In contrast to this conventional thinking, Rudolf Steiner places the suffering caused by disease in a broad vista that includes an understanding of karma and personal metamorphosis. Illness comes to expression in the physical body, but mostly does not originate in it, says Steiner, and thus a key part of the physician's work involves gaining insight into the whole nature of an individual - his essential core being. From this perspective, illness offers us the opportunity for deeper healing. Throughout this volume Rudolf Steiner draws our attention to the greater scope of the smallest phenomena - even a seemingly insignificant headache. He casts vivid light on things we normally take for granted, such as the human capacity to laugh or cry, and in the process broadens our vision of human existence. The apparently mundane human experiences of forgetting and remembering are intrinsic to our humanity, for example, and have unsuspected moral and spiritual dimensions. Steiner's insights are never merely 'lofty' or nebulously 'spiritual' but time and again connect with the minutest realities of everyday life. In these 18 lectures, delivered on a weekly basis as part of an ongoing course covering 'the whole field of spiritual science', Steiner elaborates in detail on the diverse interplay of the human being's constituting aspects (physical body, etheric body, astral body and ego or 'I') in relation to rhythmic processes, developing consciousness, the history of human evolution, and our connection with the cosmos. Within this broad canvas, some of his themes acquire a very distinctive focus - such as vivid accounts of the 'intimate history' of Christianity, 'creating out of nothing', the interior of the earth, and health and illness. Other topics include: the nature of pain, suffering, pleasure and bliss; the four human group souls of lion, bull, eagle and man; the significance of the Ten Commandments; the nature of original sin; the deed of Christ and the adversary powers of Lucifer, Ahriman and the Asuras; evolution and involution; the Atlantean period - and even Friedrich Nietzsche's madness!Table of ContentsEighteen lectures held in Berlin between October 1908 and June 1909

Rudolf Steiner Press Illness and Therapy: Spiritual-Scientific Aspects

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis'An external view of states of health and sickness must be augmented by what we can also know about the inner, spiritual reality within the human being.' - Rudolf Steiner In a series of nine lectures to doctors, pharmacists and students, Rudolf Steiner presents a wealth of medical ideas with numerous therapeutic and diagnostic insights. As with his first series of lectures on medicine held a year previously (Introducing Anthroposophical Medicine), the range, depth and scope of Steiner's subject-matter is breathtaking. Speaking at the international centre of anthroposophy, the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, Rudolf Steiner begins by describing the interplay of physical and metaphysical aspects of the human being, presenting a paradigm in which the four bodies - physical, etheric, astral and ego or 'I' - interrelate in contrasting ways with the threefold human organism of head, thorax and metabolism, and with our capacities for thinking, feeling and will. These challenging but enlightening concepts unlock a wonderful diagnostic tool for the appraisal and understanding of patients. Steiner considers the medicinal actions of various substances - including silica, phosphorus, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and mercury. Among numerous other subjects, Rudolf Steiner discusses the methodology of medical examination; the treatment of developmental irregularities; the four types of ether; raw food diets; the I and assimilation of food; metal therapy and the actions of lead, magnesium, tin, iron, copper, gold, mercury and silver; the use of root and herbaceous parts and flowers in medicine; the rhythmic balancing process between the action of salutogenic and pathological forces; and the nature of death. This volume also features Rudolf Steiner's answers to questions, an introductory lecture to eurythmy therapy, a comprehensive introduction, notes and index, colour plates of Steiner's blackboard drawings, and facsimiles and translations of his notes for the lectures.Table of ContentsNine lectures given to physicians and medical students in Dornach between 11 and 18 April 1921, including Rudolf Steiner's notes for the lectures

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCould a little-known drug really revolutionize treatment for autoimmune diseases, cancer, depression, and more? “[LDN] raises hopes of reversing memory loss in old age.”—the Guardian Over 30,000 copies sold! Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) holds the potential to help millions of people suffering from various autoimmune diseases and cancers, and even autism, chronic fatigue, and depression, find relief. Administered off-label in small daily doses (0.5 to 4.5 mg), this generic drug is extremely affordable and presents few known side effects. So why has it languished in relative medical obscurity? The LDN Book explains: The drug’s origins Its primary mechanism The latest research from practicing physicians and pharmacists Compiled by Linda Elsegood of The LDN Research Trust—the world’s largest LDN charity organization with over 19,000 members worldwide—the book features ten chapters contributed by medical professionals on LDN’s efficacy and two patient-friendly appendices. The LDN Book is a comprehensive resource for doctors, pharmacists, and patients who want to learn more about how LDN is helping people now, and a clarion call for further research that could help millions more.Trade Review“I first came across LDN several years ago when a medical colleague said I should look into its positive effects in patients with MS, Crohn’s disease, and other autoimmune disorders. I was so impressed with what I read that I helped submit a petition to the UK government to ask for funding for further research into this inexpensive drug. But, as with so many petitions, no progress was made. I hope The LDN Book—which presents up-to-date findings that again confirm the efficacy of this safe, cheap, generic drug in helping to control many chronic, disabling conditions—is read by those in the Department of Health and by all doctors caring for patients with autoimmune disease. In the UK, LDN has been stranded in limbo; maybe now the time has come for it to be accepted as a recognized therapy that could, at least, be tried on those suffering such long-term diseases of the immune system.”--Dr. Chris Steele, MBE, general practitioner; medical presenter on ITV’s This Morning“As a practicing physician who has used LDN as a cornerstone therapy for over fifteen years, I can say without equivocation that LDN is the most important and successful medicine I have ever used. I often joke that if not for LDN I couldn’t pay my mortgage; I’ve had so many new patients referred to me by someone whose life has improved dramatically through the use of LDN. And despite my knowledge and experience with LDN, I’ve learned a great deal from The LDN Book—aspects of its basic science I hadn’t known, new uses, and how its uses can inform us about the causes of various diseases. This is a wonderful book for any patient with an autoimmune disease, cancer, depression, or a host of other conditions and is a must-read for any physician whose goal is to help their patients.”--Dr. Thomas Cowan, author of The Fourfold Path to Healing and coauthor of The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care“Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) was discovered by my husband and partner, Dr. Bernard Bihari. Incredibly informative and superbly written by various members of the medical profession sharing their experiences using this extraordinary drug, The LDN Book honors his legacy in helping patients suffering from autoimmune and other diseases to regain their health and their lives.”--Jacqueline Young

Book SynopsisHerbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a five-volume set that serves as a comprehensive, practical reference manual for herbalists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Dr. Jill Stansbury draws on her decades of clinical experience and her extensive research to provide an unparalleled range of herbal formulas. Organized by body system, each volume includes hundreds of formulas to treat common health conditions, as well as formulas that address specific energetic or symptomatic presentations. For each formula, Dr. Stansbury briefly explains how the selected herbs address the specific condition. Sidebars and user-friendly lists help readers quickly choose which herbs are best for specific presentations and detail traditional uses of both Western and traditional Asian formulas and herbs that are readily available in the United States. Volume 3 focuses on endocrine systems, offering formulas and supporting information for treating thyroid disease, adrenal disorders, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This volume also covers the female and male reproductive systems including conditions related to menstruation and PMS, fertility and pregnancy, and the prostate. Reproductive endocrinology is one of Dr. Stansbury’s specialties, and she provides herbal formulas and therapies for pelvic inflammatory disease, genital herpes, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, PCOS, uterine fibroids, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and more. She also discusses the role of herbal medicine in prevention and treatment of reproductive cancers. Each chapter includes a materia medica section that describes individual herbs with tips on their properties, modes of action, and the specific symptoms each plant best addresses. These formularies are also a tutorial for budding herbalists on the sophisticated art of fine-tuning an herbal formula for the constitution and overall health condition of an individual patient, rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all treatment for a basic diagnosis. The text aims to teach by example, helping clinicians develop their own intuition and ability to create effective herbal formulas. Volume 1 focuses on digestion and elimination and Volume 2 covers circulation and respiration. Volumes 4 (Neurology, Psychiatry, and Pain Management) and 5 (Immunology, Orthopedics, and Otolaryngology) will be published in 2020.Trade Review“Dr. Stansbury is a prescient, loving steward of the Standing Green Nation. Deeply loved by herbalists globally, her mentoring and clinical mastery powerfully manifest in this set of formularies. It is at once classic, complete, and enduring, offering herbal medicine savvy and deep research through articulate narratives and formulations for many conditions. Dr. Stansbury is always modest, grateful, and curious. Her friends, the sentient plants of a living earth, know this. Pachamama, too. The volumes themselves are beautiful objects whose rich content and elegant design are exemplary and respectful of this hard-earned, cumulative wisdom.”—David J. Schleich, PhD, president, National University of Natural Medicine“Herbal Formularies For Health Professionals is a gift to all healthcare practitioners seeking to heal their patients through a natural medicine approach. The expertise of Dr. Stansbury is extraordinary. This text is not a simple guide; it is a fascinating educational read and treatment formulary that is practical and evidence-based.”—Mimi Guarneri, MD, president, Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine“There are many herb books, but few address the fine points of clinical herbal prescribing. To remedy this deficiency, Dr. Jill Stansbury, ND, has written perhaps the best herbal formulary since the days of the renowned Eclectic physicians. Her first book in this set of five volumes covers the digestive and eliminatory systems including the liver and gallbladder, urinary system, and skin. Each section and page clearly shows the skill, experience, and expertise of the author and will help even the seasoned naturopathic physician or herbalist improve their clinical practice and success in treating their patients.”—David Winston, RH (AHG), dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies; founder of Herbal Therapeutics Research Library“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume I is simply the best text available for the modern clinical practice of Western herbal medicine. It’s likely to become an instant classic and essential book for any student of herbal medicine, as well as seasoned practitioners. Dr. Stansbury includes copious examples from her extensive clinical work with many kinds of patients to help students and practitioners alike find healing solutions to common ailments and symptoms.”—Christopher Hobbs, PhD, LAc, fourth-generation herbalist“Fabulous! This book is an outstanding resource. Dr. Jill Stansbury, one of the most respected herbalists and naturopathic doctors of our time, has created an up-to-date formulary that combines the best of traditional formulas with modern research and her own extensive clinical experience. This impeccably researched volume, the first in a set of five, is a master reference tool for herbalists, doctors, and other health care professionals seeking to create precise formulas based on the individual, not on the diagnosis.”—Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist; founder of Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center“Esteemed clinical herbalist and naturopathic physician Jill Stansbury shares thirty years of experience with botanical medicines from all over the globe in this incredibly helpful text, which is part guidebook, part materia medica, and part recipe-based formulary, laced with an enthusiastic appreciation of all things herbal. In short, Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a well-researched and beautifully presented herbal resource. Because of its easy readability, logical organization, and wealth of information, it is an asset for students, newly graduated herbalists and doctors, and seasoned practitioners alike. It will no doubt be a frequently referenced text in the library of any herbal practitioner.”—Timothy Miller, ND, MAc, LAc, RA, founder of Naturopathic CE“Accomplished naturopathic physician Dr. Jill Stansbury brings her vast clinical experience, deep knowledge, commitment, and passion for herbs to this exciting modern-day formulary. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is an extensive reference guide to the creation of classic herbal formulas using traditional herbal healing wisdom as well as modern science. This text should be a foundational part of herbal education. There is no other formulary as comprehensive or as accessible to the clinician; this book truly fills an empty space in the list of current herbal clinical education publications.”—Dr. Mary Bove, ND, author of Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 delves deeply into herbal formulas for digestive, liver, urinary, and skin problems, along with descriptions and, where known, causes of these problems. In a chapter on the art of formulation, Jill Stansbury outlines example cases and provides appropriate formulas for each. Her considerations are fascinating. This refreshing work will be highly useful for both serious students and practitioners.”—Henriette Kress, herbalist; founder of Henriette’s Herbal Homepage“Dr. Jill Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a formidable accomplishment and historic contribution to the rapidly developing field of botanical medicine. In the tradition of the great pharmacopeias of the Eclectic and naturopathic physicians, this comprehensive manual contains a wealth of concisely detailed herbal formulations and easily readable contemporary research that address both the widespread illnesses of our time as well as specialized and less common conditions. “Herbal Formularies is practical and immediately usable for anyone interested in the applications of herbal medicine. Its depth will satisfy senior clinicians, academic researchers, and medical educators, while its accessibility will greatly further the education of students and the serious lay person.”—David Crow, LAc, founder of Floracopeia Aromatic Treasures“Reading Dr. Stansbury’s formulary has quickly supported us in updating and filling in gaps in our dispensary stock to better serve our customers. I believe this book will similarly inform the dispensing practices of practitioners of all experience levels looking to glean insight from one of the most experienced herbalist physicians in the United States. “I’m thrilled to see this first of five volumes of herbal internal medical formularies being released to a wide audience. Previous efforts have been predominately geared toward licensed acupuncturists or naturopathic physicians, but these volumes will speak to a broader, dynamic audience. Clinicians will be surprised to discover how much groundwork has already been laid for future generations of health care professionals. This book offers mature templates for improvisation to treat a myriad of complex health conditions with botanical medicines.”—Benjamin Zappin, LAc, herbalist; cofounder of Five Flavors Herbs“Formulation is one of the key elements of a clinical herbalist’s practice. It is also an aspect that intimidates many practitioners, especially those newer to herbal medicine. Jill Stansbury’s book is a valuable guide to formulation that will lend a strong guiding hand for herbalists of all skill levels. Her language is clear, instructive, and easy to read. She gives multiple examples drawn from her extensive practice, and her explanations offer direction for working with individual patients. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a comprehensive and practical book that I will recommend to my herbal students.”—7Song, director of Northeast School of Botanical Medicine; Director of Holistic Medicine, Ithaca Free Clinic

The straightforward academic informational writing is gentled with moments of conversational author-to-reader comments (often humorous), and peppered with short personal narrative stories that bring the reader into the sensory tapestry of Thailand. It is intended as a stand alone manual, or as a text book for Thai massage instructors to use in classes.

Book SynopsisThe olfactory journey described in this book introduces readers to the pleasures and benefits of educating and training the 'nose', our olfactory palate. Jennifer Peace Rhind explores the process of cultivating our sense of smell and demonstrates how the process itself can be therapeutic and enjoyable, as well as informative. She highlights the different skills involved, from olfactory vocabulary, awareness, and memory, through to discrimination and fragrance creation, and the activities that can help to acquire them, emphasizing the value of experiential learning. She describes the Japanese art of koh-do or the 'way of incense' and suggests ways of creating group events inspired by this. Based on her twenty five years' experience working with essential oils and aromatic plant extracts, she also leads the reader through a variety of scent families, with information on the botanical source, odour profiles, olfactory notes, and suggestions for comparison with other scents. This method of educating and training the 'nose' is fascinating, challenging and life-enhancing and will be of interest to anyone eager to develop their sense of smell, and of incalculable use to aromatherapy students and practitioners who must acquire these skills for their career.Trade ReviewListening to Scent is set to become the must-have reference book at a time when the sense of smell has only started being explored. • Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTraditional Chinese medicine has a long and complex history, yet the basic principles at the heart of practice have remained the same for hundreds of years. Without a solid understanding of these fundamental theories, effective practice is impossible, and this book provides a complete introduction to everything that students and practitioners, both new and experienced, need to know. The book describes and explains all of the fundamental principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including yin/yang, the five elements, the 'zang and fu' organs, Zang Xiang, Qi, and the meridians and collaterals of the body. Explaining not only the principles upon which these elements work, but also how they interrelate, the book describes how they can be used in practice to identify, treat and prevent ill-health and disease. This thorough and accessible textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial directorship of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is essential reading for students of traditional Chinese medicine, and is also a useful basic reference for TCM practitioners.Trade ReviewAlthough the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- OMJthe simple descriptions of these ideas are very helpful to a novice and would underpin a much more advanced study of TCM syndromes. -- The JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists)Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... Although modest in size, these texts are packed with information... in terms of portability and cost... they make themselves serious contenders for the college bags of students of Chinese medicine... In terms of visual presentation, other than the obligatory yin-yang and five-phase diagrams, assistance is limited to a few flow diagrams, which may disappoint more visually-orientated learners. This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such... These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese Medicine, Greg MeierAlthough the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- Frank Yurasek Ph. Book SynopsisThe ability to apply complex theory to practice is a vital skill for acupuncturists. Case studies and medical records are an extremely useful resource for understanding how to differentiate between different syndromes, and provide invaluable precedents for deciding upon appropriate methods of diagnosis and treatment. This book presents a collection of real case studies of patients who have been treated by prominent acupuncture practitioners in China. The case studies are divided into five sub-categories of disease, and include information on the patient's medical history, presenting complaint, symptoms, tongue and pulse examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prescription as well as the Western diagnosis. More than 170 different case studies are included in the book, covering 73 different types of syndromes and disease. A useful appendix with the Chinese and English names for these syndromes is also included. Compiled by leading experts at the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, this book is a useful reference for acupuncture practitioners and students at all levels.Trade Reviewthis book is yet another concise learning resource for Traditional Chinese Acupuncturists but practitioners of the western acupuncture approach will find some "nuggets" of treatment techniques that will add to one's therapeutic repertoire. -- Acupuncture in MedicineAS with previous publications by Singing Dragon the production quality is high and the standard of translation generally good throughout... This book also details acute cases not usually seen in Western private practice... One of the standout aspects of this book compared to other compilations of case studies is the detailed description of needling techniques and point combinations...This text constitutes more than just a repeat of TCM axioms and has both challenged my existing understanding of Chinese Medicine and provided insight into experienced practitioners' understanding and application of TCM theory. I can therefore recommend this book as a useful resource for both students and experienced practitioners. -- Journal of Chinese MedicineTable of ContentsPreface. Foreword. Introduction. Section 1. Book SynopsisThis book considers death and loss within Chinese Medicine and related Taoist models, and offers practical advice and techniques, effective recommendations and appropriate exercises for those working in palliative care, with grieving, frail or dying clients.Grainger examines the different ways that practitioners might encounter death and loss - including working in end-of-life care, with those facing terminal illness, affected by bereavement, suicide or miscarriage - in the context of different ages, religious and cultural backgrounds, and offers a model for teaching.Working with Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice is the go-to text for practitioners wishing to improve their expertise and confidence when working with people at a vulnerable time in a respectful, open-hearted and compassionate manner.Trade ReviewAn invaluable resource for all touch therapists drawn to working at this edge of life. Weaving her own extensive experience together with guidance on every conceivable aspect of the subject, Tamsin Grainger balances poignant case studies with the discipline, self-reflection and professionalism that end-of-life care demands. A truly impressive achievement! -- Nick Pole, Shiatsu teacher and author of Words That Touch: How to ask questions your body can answer (Singing Dragon 2017)This is a wonderful book, and a gift to any Shiatsu practitioner. In our practice we often encounter grief loss and death (in all its forms). Tamsin has comprehensively researched every conceivable aspect of the subject, from different Shiatsu ways of interpreting grieving behaviour to the differences the practitioner may encounter between working in a hospital or in a hospice. Many moving and memorable case histories illustrate her theme, some her own, some from other practitioners. I loved her use of tables to clarify and explain, in particular one table - how brave, bold and entirely appropriate in Shiatsu literature! - where she lists her experiences of feeling different kinds of Ki movement in receivers' diverse emotional responses to the prospect of death. Her voice is direct, compassionate and honest. I will be learning from and enjoying this book for years to come. -- Carola Beresford-Cooke, author of Shiatsu Theory and PracticeWorking With Death and Loss in Shiatsu Practice is invaluable for students of Shiatsu as well as for experienced practitioners, whether they work with very sick and dying clients or not. They will benefit from this book's deep insight into the nature of life, its deep challenges and its joy. -- Wilfried Rappenecker, Shiatsu teacher, practitioner and author of Atlas of Shiatsu: The Meridians of Zen ShiatsuTable of Contents1.
