John Wiley and Sons Ltd Professional Reasoning in Healthcare
Book SynopsisProfessional Reasoning in Healthcare A guide to decision-making and critical thinking in diverse healthcare practice contexts. Professional reasoning is an essential component of health practice. To thrive in a world that demands constant change where there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer, strong frameworks are needed to support effective decision making. Critical to safe, ethical and culturally responsive practice decisions is the ability to integrate information from research evidence, the client, and the context/environment. Practitioners draw from these elements, along with the expertise of others, and through integration of the information with who they are, what they know, and how they operate. This creates a way forward that is right for the client, applicable to the context, and a good fit with themselves. This book provides such a framework. Professional Reasoning in Healthcare: Navigating Uncertainty Using the Five Finger Framework aims to drive a revolution in professional decision-making and critical analysis among healthcare professionals. Built around an innovative framework for fostering thinking, this book illustrates the situated nature of learning and the uniqueness of practice decisions to individual practitioners and clients. The simplicity of the Five Finger framework belies the complexity of reasoning it stimulates. Written using narratives, the reader is able to imagine the situation as the thinking is made visible. It provides simple yet effective tools and techniques for promoting reflective and reflexive thinking and for integrating the evidence into effective decisions. It promises to help readers develop habits of critical thinking that lead to healthier, more effective decision-making processes. Readers will find: Scenarios that bring the professional reasoning to lifeTools and techniques to help translate theory into immediate practiceStrategies to enhance reflective thinking skills, transformative learning, and sense-makingDetailed discussion of topics including team culture, person-centred practice, social learning theory, cultural influences on reasoning, emotional intelligence, and moreAn overview of transdisciplinary thinking and a complexity-based view on ethics and values Professional Reasoning in Healthcare is ideal for healthcare professionals, managers, students, and educators who are charged with developing skills in making critical decisions in diverse practice contexts.Trade ReviewAn essential tool and a great insight to the decision-making skills that health professionals go through on a daily basis - a must read for all practitioners, new and seasoned! Lara Gallichan BSc Hons, Speech Language Therapist, NZSTA Written in a clear and accessible manner, there is no doubt this book will be an invaluable resource for students, clinicians, and teachers alike. By providing real-world examples, the reader easily appreciates the value of the Five Finger Framework and how it can improve their professional reasoning and practice. This book should be a compulsory reading for all students, and I would highly recommend it to all practising healthcare workers. Dr Ruth Jeffery PhD, MSc, PGDip Med Rad Sci (NM), LLB(Hons), BA, BSc, NZDMI. The ability to critically reflect upon the way that professional reasoning and judgement occurs is pivotal and is profoundly ethical for practice, research, and leadership. Amongst the unique features of this text is the introduction of the Five Finger Framework to assist lifelong learners to comprehensively problem pose and problem solve. This resonates well with situated learning with its focus upon context, interpersonal relationships and shared decision making. The book is culturally aware, transdisciplinary and has the potential to become a core text for learners at all levels of education particularly for those within practice-based education and mentorship relationships. Dr Sheena E.E.Blair Dip OT, M.Ed, ED, FRCOT Thanks for offering real, concrete, and doable approaches for improving professional reasoning…. using real stories of real practitioners to show how this works in practice…. broadening the views on client and culture…. In short, thanks for “handing us” the Five Finger Framework. It will work for students, practitioners, educators, and scholars. I would adopt it in a heartbeat if I were still teaching! Barbara A. Schell, Professor Emerita, School of Occupational Therapy, Brenau University, PhD, OT/L, FAOTA. This internationally relevant text presents the Five Finger Framework as a tool for enabling practice reasoning, critical reflection, and decision-making across a range of transdisciplinary approaches in health and social care settings. The metaphor of a hand unfolds a structured process for thinking through many-layered aspects to reach the end goal we all aim for - working effectively, visibly and in a traceable and thus accountable manner for collaborative solution-focused approaches. SteinerBooks, Inc Autism: Meet Me Who I Am: An Educational, Sensory
Book SynopsisAutism manifests in an incredible diversity of characteristics, including but by no means limited to communication issues, repetitive behaviour, and lack of eye contact. In this important book, two experienced physicians go behind the diagnostic labels and the consultation room to a holistic approach for autism. For each unique child, they ask how behaviour differs in different places or with different people, and why; they explore the influences of different types of food; and they ask what sensory needs lie behind particular behaviour. Their approach encompasses not only medical but, primarily, social, pedagogical and environmental considerations, and its from this starting point that they endeavour to build a community of support for a child. This approach challenges family members and professional caregivers to step out of their silos and work together in dynamic, therapeutic communities. Autism: Meet Me Who I Am tells the story of this journey of co-working, drawing inspiration from the children themselves.

Chelsea Green Publishing Co Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals,
Book SynopsisHerbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a five-volume set that serves as a comprehensive, practical reference manual for herbalists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Dr. Jill Stansbury draws on her decades of clinical experience and her extensive research to provide an unparalleled range of herbal formulas. Organized by body system, each volume includes hundreds of formulas to treat common health conditions, as well as formulas that address specific energetic or symptomatic presentations, including Dr. Stansbury’s own formulas, formulas from herbal folklore, and formulas from Traditional Chinese Medicine. For each formula, Dr. Stansbury offers a brief explanation of how the selected herbs address the specific condition. The book offers many sidebars and user-friendly lists—helping readers quickly choose which herbs are best for specific presentations—and details traditional uses of both western herbs and traditional Asian herbs and formulas that are readily available in the United States. Volume 2 focuses on circulation and respiration, offering formulas and supporting information for treating a wide range of vascular, pulmonary, and respiratory conditions, including angina, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, Reynaud’s syndrome, anemia, coughs, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema. Each chapter includes a materia medica section that describes individual herbs with tips on their properties, modes of action, and the specific symptoms each plant best addresses. These formularies are also a tutorial for budding herbalists on the sophisticated art of fine-tuning the precision of an herbal formula for the constitution and overall health condition of an individual patient, rather than a basic diagnosis. The text aims to teach via example, helping clinicians develop their own intuition and ability to create effective herbal formulas. Volume 1 (Digestion and Elimination) debuted the set in February 2018. Volume 3 (Endocrinology) will be published in May 2019. Volumes 4 (Neurology, Pyschiatry, and Pain Management) and 5 (Immunology, Orthopedics, and Otolarnygology) will be published in 2020.Trade Review“Herbal Formularies For Health Professionals is a gift to all healthcare practitioners seeking to heal their patients through a natural medicine approach. The expertise of Dr. Stansbury is extraordinary. This text is not a simple guide; it is a fascinating educational read and treatment formulary that is practical and evidence-based.”—Mimi Guarneri, MD, president, Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine“There are many herb books, but few address the fine points of clinical herbal prescribing. To remedy this deficiency, Dr. Jill Stansbury, ND, has written perhaps the best herbal formulary since the days of the renowned Eclectic physicians. Her first book in this set of five volumes covers the digestive and eliminatory systems including the liver and gallbladder, urinary system, and skin. Each section and page clearly shows the skill, experience, and expertise of the author and will help even the seasoned naturopathic physician or herbalist improve their clinical practice and success in treating their patients.”—David Winston, RH (AHG), dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies; founder of Herbal Therapeutics Research Library“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume I is simply the best text available for the modern clinical practice of Western herbal medicine. It’s likely to become an instant classic and essential book for any student of herbal medicine, as well as seasoned practitioners. Dr. Stansbury includes copious examples from her extensive clinical work with many kinds of patients to help students and practitioners alike find healing solutions to common ailments and symptoms.”—Christopher Hobbs, PhD, LAc, fourth-generation herbalist“Fabulous! This book is an outstanding resource. Dr. Jill Stansbury, one of the most respected herbalists and naturopathic doctors of our time, has created an up-to-date formulary that combines the best of traditional formulas with modern research and her own extensive clinical experience. This impeccably researched volume, the first in a set of five, is a master reference tool for herbalists, doctors, and other health care professionals seeking to create precise formulas based on the individual, not on the diagnosis.”—Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist; founder of Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center“Esteemed clinical herbalist and naturopathic physician Jill Stansbury shares thirty years of experience with botanical medicines from all over the globe in this incredibly helpful text, which is part guidebook, part materia medica, and part recipe-based formulary, laced with an enthusiastic appreciation of all things herbal. In short, Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a well-researched and beautifully presented herbal resource. Because of its easy readability, logical organization, and wealth of information, it is an asset for students, newly graduated herbalists and doctors, and seasoned practitioners alike. It will no doubt be a frequently referenced text in the library of any herbal practitioner.”—Timothy Miller, ND, MAc, LAc, RA, founder of Naturopathic CE“Accomplished naturopathic physician Dr. Jill Stansbury brings her vast clinical experience, deep knowledge, commitment, and passion for herbs to this exciting modern-day formulary. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is an extensive reference guide to the creation of classic herbal formulas using traditional herbal healing wisdom as well as modern science. This text should be a foundational part of herbal education. There is no other formulary as comprehensive or as accessible to the clinician; this book truly fills an empty space in the list of current herbal clinical education publications.”—Dr. Mary Bove, ND, author of Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 delves deeply into herbal formulas for digestive, liver, urinary, and skin problems, along with descriptions and, where known, causes of these problems. In a chapter on the art of formulation, Jill Stansbury outlines example cases and provides appropriate formulas for each. Her considerations are fascinating. This refreshing work will be highly useful for both serious students and practitioners.”—Henriette Kress, herbalist; founder of Henriette’s Herbal Homepage“Dr. Jill Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a formidable accomplishment and historic contribution to the rapidly developing field of botanical medicine. In the tradition of the great pharmacopeias of the Eclectic and naturopathic physicians, this comprehensive manual contains a wealth of concisely detailed herbal formulations and easily readable contemporary research that address both the widespread illnesses of our time as well as specialized and less common conditions. “Herbal Formularies is practical and immediately usable for anyone interested in the applications of herbal medicine. Its depth will satisfy senior clinicians, academic researchers, and medical educators, while its accessibility will greatly further the education of students and the serious lay person.”—David Crow, LAc, founder of Floracopeia Aromatic Treasures“Reading Dr. Stansbury’s formulary has quickly supported us in updating and filling in gaps in our dispensary stock to better serve our customers. I believe this book will similarly inform the dispensing practices of practitioners of all experience levels looking to glean insight from one of the most experienced herbalist physicians in the United States. “I’m thrilled to see this first of five volumes of herbal internal medical formularies being released to a wide audience. Previous efforts have been predominately geared toward licensed acupuncturists or naturopathic physicians, but these volumes will speak to a broader, dynamic audience. Clinicians will be surprised to discover how much groundwork has already been laid for future generations of health care professionals. This book offers mature templates for improvisation to treat a myriad of complex health conditions with botanical medicines."—Benjamin Zappin, LAc, herbalist; cofounder of Five Flavors Herbs“Formulation is one of the key elements of a clinical herbalist’s practice. It is also an aspect that intimidates many practitioners, especially those newer to herbal medicine. Jill Stansbury’s book is a valuable guide to formulation that will lend a strong guiding hand for herbalists of all skill levels. Her language is clear, instructive, and easy to read. She gives multiple examples drawn from her extensive practice, and her explanations offer direction for working with individual patients. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a comprehensive and practical book that I will recommend to my herbal students.”—7Song, director of Northeast School of Botanical Medicine; Director of Holistic Medicine, Ithaca Free ClinicTable of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: The Art of Herbal Formulation Chapter 2: Creating Herbal Formulas for Vascular and Pulmonary Conditions Chapter 3: Creating Herbal Formulas for Respiratory Conditions Acknowledgments Botanical Names to Common Names Common Names to Botanical Names Notes Glossary Index

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Ozone Therapy for the Treatment of Viruses: The
Book SynopsisOne of our immune system’s key defences is ozone, an oxygen molecule (O3) naturally produced by our antibodies to fight germs, viruses, and other invaders. For more than a century, doctors have used ozone therapy to effectively and safely treat a wide variety of diseases, including Ebola, SARS, and, most recently, Covid-19. Revealing ozone therapy’s enormous potential to bring health to millions, Marc Seifer, Ph.D., explores its science and history as well as its success in the treatment of viruses such as Covid-19, pneumonia, tuberculosis, Lyme disease, and the flu. He examines research performed by scientists and medical doctors going back more than 200 years that conclusively shows that ozone is a powerful disinfectant with antibacterial and antiviral properties. He shares articles from leading ozone therapy doctors and researchers, including Robert Rowen, M.D., and Howard Robins, D.P.M., who travelled to West Africa in 2014 to combat the Ebola outbreak with ozone therapy, and Gerard Sunnen, M.D., who has been researching the beneficial effects of ozone therapy on coronaviruses. Explaining how ozone therapy works, the author examines its therapeutic benefits, including how it inhibits inflammation, activates antioxidant defences, and optimises the ability of the body’s tissue to use oxygen. He also shares numerous case studies from more than a dozen doctors in six different countries to show how Covid-19 patients have been treated successfully with ozone therapy. Unmasking the suppression of this revolutionary therapy by the FDA, Seifer shows not only how ozone therapy is effective against current viruses such as Covid-19 and Ebola but also how it can help the immune system learn to protect itself against emerging future viruses.Trade Review“Written in conjunction with four medical doctors, Ozone Therapy for the Treatment of Viruses provides a fascinating and thoughtful history of the field and a sober look at a present-day mindset that has ignored what I have known through my own scientific research and practice. Ozone therapy is a medically safe germicidal that can kill viruses. Highly informative, here is a book that can provide a rational approach to disabling not only COVID-19 but also highly dangerous bacterial infections and emerging viruses as well.” * Mark Hyman, M.D., New York Times bestselling author and senior advisor at the Cleveland Clinic Cente *“According to Seifer, the widespread use of ozone therapy as a treatment for COVID-19 could have saved millions of lives and the world trillions of dollars. While he advocates for vaccinations, he contends that ozone therapy is a safe and effective treatment for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated that boasts a robust track record of success. Seifer presents his case meticulously, citing not only the clinical evidence in support of ozone therapy but also its documented use for COVID-19 in places like Spain and Italy as well as for burn victims, those with various viral diseases, and against the superbugs that plague hospital systems. The author provides an accessible history of the treatment and a concise overview of the inner workings of the immune system, along with the testimony of doctors who have used it with success and patients who have received it. At the heart of the issue is the vigorous opposition mounted against the treatment by the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association as well as the pharmaceutical industry. Seifer presents his criticisms of those organizations with impressive composure and evenhandedness. Will readers be convinced? This is such a complex issue that a conversion is unlikely to occur. But the author’s work will probably stimulate further research and even provocatively raise suspicions about the opposition of certain quarters of the medical establishment. A well-researched introduction to a muchmaligned therapeutic tool.” * Kirkus Reviews *“If ever a book was needed, Ozone Therapy for the Treatment of Viruses is right on time. SARS-CoV-2 has infected the world. A safe and effective treatment was available from the beginning of this illness. Ozone, which costs pennies, is a very effective antiviral agent. It has a long history of success in treating viral infections. For nearly 30 years I have successfully used ozone along with other nutritional and oxidative therapies in my practice to treat viral infections, including patients suffering from COVID- 19. Ozone as a medicinal therapy is unparalleled. This book can give you the knowledge on how to successfully fight viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2.” * David Brownstein, M.D., author of A Holistic Approach to Viruses *“A valuable resource about applications of medical ozone to treat COVID and other viral infections. A must-read for both health care consumers and medical professionals.” * Nathaniel Altman, author of The New Oxygen Prescription and The Honey Prescription *“A well-founded presentation of the effectiveness of ozone therapy, which opens a new therapeutic field to fight viruses.” * Christopher Vasey, N.D., author of Lymph Health and Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION The Pathway Out of Epidemics and Pandemics PART I Innovation and Suppression 1 Pandemics and the Promise of Ozone: How Two Intrepid Doctors Went to West Africa to Destroy Ebola 2 The History of Ozone 3 Ozone Therapy Timeline 4 The FDA and Ozone Therapy: An Uncomfortable Retrospective 5 How the AMA Got Rich Dana Ullman, MPH, CCHPART II The Research6 The Immune System7 Physiological Effects of Ozone Therapy on the BodyLouise Pyper8 MERS, SARS, Coronaviruses:Theoretical Considerations for Critical Care Oxygen/Ozone Therapy Gerard Sunnen, M.D.9 Did Nikola Tesla Discover a Treatment for COVID-19 over 100 Years Ago? Jessica Kingsley Publishers Intention and Non-Doing in Therapeutic Bodywork
Book SynopsisExploring the Buddhist/Taoist concept of non-doing and intention in relation to bodywork, this book focuses on how the therapist should approach their client without agenda and meet them where they are at. This requires the therapist to pay attention to their own surfacing intentions and leave assumptions behind so they may focus on simply 'being', which is a profoundly active, non-reactive expression of presence, rather than a passive state of resignation. The ramifications of sub-conscious doing and wilful intention can negatively impact expressions of health and so the author explains how therapists may skilfully navigate between intention, attention and embodied non-doing whilst treating clients, and how this creates the foundations for safe relational touch.Trade ReviewAnother book worthy of reading. Andrew Pike condenses, in a brilliant manner, complex and often confusing subjects of intention and sensations. Promoting slowing down, being aware and noticing are very difficult and under-appreciated practices in our fast-paced global society. He explains how these human experiences should be considered an essential practice and not a simple luxury. Best of all he guides the reader through the simple process of accessing a quiet, deeper, inner sense of self that assists us to deal with a culture of rampant speed and unrelenting bombardment of external noise and disturbances. -- David Berceli, Ph.D., CEO of Trauma Recovery Services and Creator of Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE).Although Andy Pike's new book is entitled, "Intention & Non-Doing in Therapeutic Bodywork", I believe the work deserves a much wider, more general audience. For 'Intention and Non-doing in Therapeutic Bodywork' is a blueprint, complete with a large number of immediately practical exercises, for how to be a better human being, more present, more often, and less reactive in the process. Recommended. -- Kit Laughlin, M. Litt., Founder of Stretch Therapy and author of Overcome neck & back pain. This deeply inquiring work invites the therapist to value not only the acutely subtle world of touch, but to self-inquire into the unseen yet palpable inner presence needed to bring an underlying truth and wholeness to the work between therapist and client. Practical exercises throughout help one embody the ultimate elegant simplicity of this approach. A beautiful, insightful masterpiece and guide for anyone working in a body-based therapeutic environment. -- Janet McGeever, Co-author of Tantric Sex and Menopause, Practices for Spiritual and Sexual RenewalIt is unusual to come across a mind that can delve so deeply into such an ethereal subject while simultaneously insisting on the embodiment of the truths discovered. You will feel Andy's insight throughout this book...his inspiring words, delicate descriptions and creative metaphors...they are alive, as is the essence they carry. -- Dr Graham Mead, MD, Creator of the InnerSense ProgramIn this book Andy skilfully takes us into the detailed and nuanced world of sensation-based awareness, leading readers to greater richness, clarity, and efficacy in their work. This text is a tremendous gift to astute bodyworkers who recognize the limitations of technique-based work and are ready to explore deeper states of therapeutic insight. -- Ryan Hallford, RCST. Aeon Books Ltd A History of Plant Medicine: Western Herbal
Book SynopsisA comprehensive guide detailing the story of healing with herbs from pre-history to modern times. Drawing on her decades of experience as an established herbalist and historian, Christina Stapley presents an encyclopaedic and accessible guide to the theory and practice of Western herbal medicine throughout history. Spanning an impressive timeline of two thousand years, A History of Plant Medicine is a fundamental textbook for students and practitioners of herbal medicine to enhance their study and practice, as well as an enjoyable narrative for anyone interested in this bountiful and fascinating subject. Using a wealth of historical research, Stapley invites readers on a journey from the beginnings of botany, through to the development of Greek and Celtic medicine, including Roman medicine and the Roman settlement of Britain. It moves on to explore Anglo-Saxon leechbooks, Arabic Medicine, Norman influenced physicians and surgeons and pharmacy in the Medieval Period. It also examines the physic garden in Britain, Culpeper and Astrology, concluding with changes and developments to herbal medicine in the modern day. As well as offering a detailed chronology of herbalism in the Western world, A History of Plant Medicine provides practical advice and recipes which can be implemented in the daily practice of the modern herbalist. Stapley creates tangible threads through time, focusing on the most used herbs at different periods, and following them over the centuries. Special emphasis is put upon seeking out effective recipes and practices abandoned in favour of new ideas and foreign herbs, and each is presented clearly and accessibly throughout. A History of Plant Medicine also illuminates the work of women physicians across the ages, whose work has often been obscured or forgotten. Ultimately, A History of Plant Medicine invites herbalists (both new and old), historians, or interested lay people, to re-evaluate their relationship with herbal medicine, in understanding how different herbs are perceived in the light of knowledge and beliefs at particular times, in order to aid a greater understanding of the Western herbal tradition. Trade Review‘A History of Plant Medicine takes us on a fascinating journey beginning with earliest recorded uses of plant medicine right up to the modern day herbal renaissance. Comprehensive and meticulously researched, this book introduces the reader to key figures in western herbal medicine, ancient herbal texts, how plants and herbal knowledge have traveled from one culture to another, and introduces us to the concept of herbal energetics and how it has evolved over the centuries. For anyone interested in western herbalism, medicine and history in general, this book is a must read. It provides important historical data and an understanding of the evolution of medicine in western culture.’ Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist and author of Medicinal Herbs, A Beginners Guide ‘Christina Stapley takes us on a long walk through two thousand years of the use of medicinal plants. This big sweep is brought together by Tina’s discussion of her personal practical experience as a practitioner and in preparing medicines from historic recipes. The theme of each chapter is linked to a particular time and place and the use of relevant British plants. The timeline, bibliography and glossary mean that students or herbal practitioners can explore any theme in more detail.’ Alison Denham MA, FNIMH & Margaret Whitelegg BA PhD FNIMHThe Tree Dispensary: Native Trees by Christina Stapley featured in The Landscape Magazine (UK), 'The best of the season to inspire and admire'.The Tree Dispensary: Exotic Trees by Christina Stapley has won the Thomas DiBaggio Book Award 2023 from the International Herb Association Foundation, USA.Praise for The Tree Dispensary: Exotic Trees by Christina Stapley (Aeon, 2021) (9781913504731): “The Tree Dispensary is a first-hand account of remarkable trees of the world from a renowned herbal expert. having travelled the world to meet the trees she writes about, the author artfully weaves her personal insights and observations along with a wealth of practical and historical information. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Diagnostics of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Book SynopsisThe principles and practice of diagnostics are key to administering effective treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. The ability to recognise and diagnose symptoms and complaints correctly is fundamental to deciding on appropriate remedies, and this book provides a comprehensive introduction to all the principles that students and practitioners need to know. The authors outline the key methods used in diagnosis, and describe the eight basic categories of ailment and disease: yin and yang, exterior and interior, cold and heat, and deficiency and excess. They provide detailed instructions on how to identify and rebalance the relative strengths of pathogens and Qi in the body, and how to differentiate between syndromes that might look the same, using traditional Chinese medicine methods. The book concludes with useful forms for completion in taking a diagnosis. Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels.Trade ReviewThere are other textbooks that deal with all the topics in these books but very few provide such an accessible format. If you want to gently progress from Western medical acupuncture into a working knowledge of TCM, the second book on Basic Theories would be a good place to start. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course DirectorThis is another book in the series International Acupuncture Textbooks and, as such, is very much up to standard. It is beautifully produced, carefully laid out and offers a very complete view of TCM diagnostics. It is also very reasonably priced... Combining practical instruction with helpfully detailed theory, this authoritative textbook is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels. I would not hesitate to recommend it. It may take a while to assimilate but it really is written so well that any physiotherapist could make sense of it and begin to make their acupuncture treatments certainly more subtle and sophisticated but, most importantly, more effective. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association fo Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course DirectorCombining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... Although modest in size, these texts are packed with information... in terms of portability and cost... they make themselves serious contenders for the college bags of students of Chinese medicine... In terms of visual presentation, other than the obligatory yin-yang and five-phase diagrams, assistance is limited to a few flow diagrams, which may disappoint more visually-orientated learners. This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such...These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here, (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese MedicineTable of Contents1. For many years Akinobu Kishi has been visiting the West to teach, but never before has his approach been recorded in book form. Regarded as one of the leading exponents of shiatsu, Kishi trained with and assisted Shizuto Masunaga, and is widely regarded as the heir to his work, developed to the higher level of Seiki Soho, which takes the practice beyond technique. With the assistance of his long-term student Alice Whieldon, Kishi's theory and practice of Seiki Soho are described and explained for the first time in this important book. Setting his work within the historical context of shiatsu, the long central section of the book consists of a dialogue about the fundamental principles and practice of Masunaga's Zen Shiatsu and Seiki Soho as taught by Kishi. The final section consists of case studies of practice, including the experiences of people treated by Kishi. This groundbreaking and generous book is illustrated with Kishi's calligraphy and other artwork, and will be essential reading for all shiatsu practitioners and students who want to deepen their practice, and a rich and rewarding read for anyone interested in Eastern approaches to life and healing.Trade ReviewEssential reading for all shiatsu practitioners and students who want to deepen their practice, and a rich, rewarding read for anyone interested in Eastern approaches to life and healing... A fantastic insight into Masunaga and his shiatsu legacy. An inspirational book, not only for the history of the therapies involved, but also for the dynamism of both man and techniques. Great to learn about this vibrant, gentle, new concept of seiki... Such an enlightening read, this book offered a rich insight into the history of shiatsu and it was fascinating to learn about the author's interaction with Masunaga, who had such a big influence in the history of this therapy. I really enjoyed this book. -- International TherapistThis is a book to have to keep reading and re-reading! -- KIKAI (Belgian Shiatsu Magazine)I found this book inspirational - a richly textured and generous guide that coherently explains the Japanese healing tradition and, for the first time in a Western language, sets Shiatsu in its full historical context. Following Kishi's personal journey it explores, through his penetrating insights, the subtle interior processes and paradoxes of healing and reveals Seiki as a potent yet simple and natural way of harmony at the centre of the tradition. -- Paul Lundberg, Co-founder of The Shiatsu College (UK) and author of The Book of ShiatsuIn this extraordinary book, Akinobu Kishi shares with us the history of Shiatsu in Japan, his experience of working with Masunaga and his own spiritual development. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Painful Bladder Syndrome: Controlling and
Book SynopsisPainful bladder syndrome is a common and highly debilitating condition that Western medicine finds notoriously difficult to treat. Blending ancient and modern holistic medical traditions from both East and West, Philip Weeks guides the reader through the process of managing their symptoms effectively using a simple yet powerful combination of natural techniques, nutrition and herbal medicine. Applying his deep understanding of the principles of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, he provides holistic medical perspectives on the causes of PBS, as well as clear explanations of specific holistic methods and techniques for bringing symptoms under control, along with step-by-step instructions for introducing them to daily life. The book also looks in a holistic way at effective natural treatments for common co-existing conditions, including allergies, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue. The book ends with an easy-to-follow seven point protocol for recovery from PBS. This pragmatic and compassionate self-help guide will empower those with interstitial cystitis to gain control over their symptoms and achieve greater physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It will also be of interest to complementary, alternative and mainstream health practitioners involved in treating or supporting those with the condition.Trade ReviewWeeks covers many subjects to show how interconnected our systems are... this book is complimentary to what a holistic pain service committed to self management would promote. -- Pain NewsThe possible contributory factors to PBS (painful bladder syndrome) are many and varied, meaning that no two cases are alike. In this book, Philip Weeks tackles this challenge head-on, adopting a personalised approach to treating PBS, one that is tailored to the unique circumstances of the individual... Split into 12 logical and easy to follow chapters, the text succinctly covers all the practitioner and patient needs to know in order to start on the road to recovery. There is comprehensive information on conventional diagnostics and medications, and on functional testing, diet, lifestyle, nutrient supplements, herbs and other complementary therapies. The information is punctuated with short case studies, enabling the reader to see instantly how the information can be applied to real life situations. This book will be a valuable tool for individuals suffering from the debilitating symptoms of PBS, as well as for the healthcare practitioners working with them. -- Lorraine Nicolle, MSc, MBANT, NTCC, CNHC, nutrition practitioner, educator and authorIn his latest book, Philip Weeks brings painful bladder syndrome (PBS) elegantly into the wider public and professional discussion. He shows us that this condition is widespread, often under-diagnosed and incorrectly managed, and that a much broader awareness is needed of the negative effects of modern lifestyles, hidden environmental toxins and over-stressed digestive system. In his convincing clinical cases he demonstrates that the successful treatment of PBS, or Interstitial Cystitis, requires a general understanding of mucous membrane health in order to heal the GAG layer of the urinary system and minimise the distress of this modern age condition. Without antagonising mainstream management of PBS, he explores with great skill its complex and multifactorial aspects and finds ways of simplifying its treatment at the same time, almost down to the level of self-help intervention and lifestyle adjustments which is what both the suffering patient and practitioners have been waiting for. -- Dr Siegfried Trefzer, Director of Hightree Medical Clinic and Associate Physician at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine, UKTable of ContentsIntroduction. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Keepers of the Soul: The Five Guardian Elements
Book SynopsisThe five elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – are fundamental to Chinese medicine and metaphysics, but it can be difficult to get beyond the purely intellectual level of understanding. This rich book gets to the heart of five element theory, and offers passionate reflections on the spirit of each element, and the practice of five element acupuncture. The author provides accessible accounts of each element, explaining what it looks like, how it presents in an individual's characteristics, how it can become unbalanced and how treatment might be approached to restore balance. With profiles of various well-known figures, including David Beckham and Elvis Presley, the author explores what it means to live in harmony as a unique being and how the five elements help shape and cultivate our body and soul. The book explains how Chinese physicians understand and diagnose their patients and offers invaluable insights into how to practise five element acupuncture effectively.A valuable and thoughtful addition to any library, this book will be of particular interest to acupuncturists, practitioners and students of complementary medicine as well as anyone contemplating Chinese medicine as a treatment option or interested more generally in human psychology.Trade ReviewPraise for the first edition'Keepers of the Soul is an important addition to the literature of this area. I would strongly recommend students of acupuncture to read this book, which provides a spiritual context into which they can place the more concrete structures of other aspects of their training. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Acupuncturist's Guide to Conventional
Book SynopsisOffering a systematic comparative approach to Western and Eastern medicine, this unique textbook enables students and practitioners of Chinese medicine to develop a core understanding of conventional medical language and treatments. Acupuncture practitioners increasingly find themselves working alongside Western healthcare professionals. Now in its second edition, this book is a guide to conventional medical diagnoses, symptoms and treatments, and using examples drawn from the author's experience and knowledge of TCM it encourages reflection on how these diagnoses may be interpreted from a more holistic medical perspective. It includes introductory sections on physiology, pathology and pharmacology, chapters devoted to the physiological systems of the body and the conventional approach to the treatment of diseases that can affect them, and information on dealing with patients in practice. Accompanying online material, including self-testing questions and answers and checklists for revision, is available for those wishing to use the text for systematic study.Trade ReviewThis book is the main Conventional Medical Sciences textbook we use at the College of Integrated Medicine for our students. There is no other textbook to touch it in terms of its clarity. It offers a "translation" of Western medical disease descriptions into Chinese medical terms and also provides a summary of 'Red Flags' of diseases for use in the clinic situation. It is also relevant for any practitioner of complementary medicine as its layout and terminology makes it such an easy book to use in order to understand from a Western medicine point of view the problems one's patients encounter. I cannot recommend it highly enough. -- Peter Mole, Dean of the College of Integrated Chinese MedicineClare Stephenson has achieved what many others have failed to do in providing a thorough, but clear and accessible, description of aspects of Conventional Medicine which every acupuncture practitioner should know about. She has used her in-depth knowledge of both Conventional and Chinese Medicine, as well as years of clinical experience in both disciplines, to create an informative, fascinating and ultimately practical book. -- Rebecca Avern, Traditional Acupuncturist and Senior Lecturer at the College of Integrated Chinese MedicineClare Stephenson has created a resource we have waited decades for; one that painstakingly and comprehensively straddles the different landscapes of western and Chinese medicine...This is an invaluable tool for practitioners and for students from the outset of their studies, both as an aid for learning and as a point of reference for assisting us and giving shape to how we might share information with our patients. Similarly, it offers an explanation of the pharmaceutical approach to disease and frames the clinical impact of medication through the lens of Chinese medicine. This offers the potential for a systematic course of learning as well as the text standing alone as a comprehensive body of knowledge...I think I'd have been much more enlightened and wakeful if I'd had it for guidance as an undergraduate. The online material is an excellent guide for the revision of essential knowledge of physiology and pathology...While this is a weight book, it is written with an elegant simplicity that illuminates the complex clinical language often used in scientific texts. It is accessible enough to be an absorbing and fascinating read. This book is insightful and yet methodical in layout, which makes extracting specific information straightforward and quick...With this book I believe she bridges the gap between our often incompatible ways of seeing and I applaud her great progress in doing this for our profession. This book is a phenomenal achievement and would make a valuable addition to the library of any acupuncture practitioner. -- Vanessa Lampert * Acu, Issue 16, Autumn 2017 *Table of ContentsForeword. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Acupressure and Acupuncture during Birth: An
Book SynopsisFor acupuncturists and birth professionals, this book explains how yin/yang and other principles of Chinese medicine can improve birth experiences as well as outcomes. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can shift and support the physical and emotional journey of birth and provide nonpharmacologic treatment approaches for commonly occurring disorders of labor such as malposition, asynclitism, slow cervical dilatation and inadequate contractions, as well as postpartum and post C-section care.Accessible and engaging, the book includes an overview of Chinese medicine for women's health; information on what happens before, during and after birth from both a biomedical and Chinese medical perspective;and a toolkit of treatment strategies for birth work. The techniques described include acupressure, Tui Na (Chinese medical bodywork), needling, auricular acupressure and electrostimulation.Trade ReviewGiven that the world of Chinese medicine can seem a bit mystical and be quite mystifying, and the world of western medicine can be incomplete in its ability to address medical issues, Claudia Citkovitz's text is a complete breath of fresh air. Right away, before she even gets going on the actual book, she is giving useful, practical information. In the introduction she writes "I have compiled the list below of "low-hanging fruit." These are acupressure and other EAM techniques that can easily be applied in the moment, or taught to birth team members, without having to read the whole book." This is followed by a list of super easy to learn and fantastically effective techniques to improve labor. Of course, this just makes one want to read the book! -- Sharon Weizenbaum Lic. Ac., Dipl CHClaudia Citkovitz combines extensive experience in obstetric medicine with a deep knowledge of East Asian Medicine and the result is a fascinating and practical book, which offers unique insight into the physiology and psychology of labor and delivery and explains how to support all stages of the birth journey, naturally and effectively. A must read for birth professionals of all disciplines. -- Jill Blakeway DACM, L.Ac. Author of Making Babies: A Proven Three Month Program for Maximum Fertility, Sex Again: Recharge Your Libido and Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of Healing30 years of having the privilege of attending childbirth of thousands of women has taught me there is no one perfect way to birth a human. I am grateful we have moved back to some common sense and recognized women should be the center of this experience. When I met Dr. Claudia Citkovitz and her amazing team at Lutheran Medical Center (LMC), I was so excited and grateful LMC had the guts to allow us to offer acupuncture. We had the good fortune in the 90's to have a chair that believed in birthing rooms, childbirth classes, doulas, osteopathic manipulation and acupuncture before it became sexy and a marketing ploy for other hospitals. My patients were thrilled to have options beyond narcotics, epidurals and ambulation to assist labor progression and ultimately delivery. Every hospital CEO needs to offer acupuncture/acupressure/TCM to all patients because the traditional allopathic approach absolutely does not work in every situation and Dr. Citkovitz's textbook should illustrate just one department that can benefit. Dr. Citkovitz's treatise on acupressure and acupuncture during birth is a comprehensive and beautifully written guide. Acknowledging the importance in the practice of osteopathy of such theoretical underpinning, the book discusses osteopathy with regard to the development of paradigms within the healing arts as well as from various philosophical viewpoints - such as postmodern, system-theoretical, Goethian and phenomenological. It examines thoroughly the multi-layered dynamics of development of human beings interacting with their environment. The resulting implications for therapeutic interaction as well as principles of diagnosis and treatment form the core of the book. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Well Connected: The Art and Science of Tailoring
Book SynopsisFreedom to Move offers an exercise blueprint for rehabilitating back and neck pain and the spinal dysfunction associated with many ''injuries''. This practical, evidence-informed resource is suitable for movement therapists of all disciplines, including physiotherapy, Pilates, yoga, Feldenkrais, and somatics. In essence, Freedom to Move describes what goes wrong in the spine and what to do about it. The ''deconstruction of movement patterns'' helps the practitioner better understand both the healthy and the pathological movement patterns associated with all spinal pain disorders. It integrates the applicable contemporary neuroscience around spinal movement and pain and the related role of the fascial system with the author''s clinical knowledge and her exploration of various movement approaches and their contribution - or otherwise - to spinal well-being. It explains the author''s model of spinal dysfunction - the remediation of which forms the basis of the author''s model of care for a healthier spine, The Key Approach. The book''s main focus is on a therapeutic exercise/embodied movement approach, which addresses the common movement faults and dysfunctions seen in all people with spinal pain. In particular, the Fundamental Patterns of Control are reintroduced as important, innate ''key'' movements which naturally provide the necessary foundations for healthy spinal control - but which have commonly been ''lost'' in the movement repertoire of those with chronic spinal pain. These are re-established and reincorporated into various poses, movements and stretches by way of specifically directed mindful embodied movement explorations. The client is helped to regain more optimal function and move out of chronic pain with more efficiency and freedom. This tailored approach to prescribing exercise for the spine is applicable within all industry models - for the rehabilitation of back and neck pain and stiffness, injury prevention, health promotion and fitness - and optimising spinal health in exercise programmes in general.
