Bold Type Books Soccerwomen: The Icons, Rebels, Stars, and
Book SynopsisFrom Michelle Akers to Megan Rapinoe, bold and inspiring profiles of the pioneers, champions and future heroines of women''s soccer around the world. Women''s soccer has come a long way. The first organized games on record -- which took place three hundred years ago in the Scottish Highlands -- were exhibition matches, where single women played against married women while available men looked on, seeking a potential mate. Today, champions like Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Brazil''s Marta and China''s Sun Wen, have inspired girls around the world to pick up the beautiful game for love of the sport. Inevitably, given the hardships and discrimination they face, women who play soccer professionally are so much more than elite athletes. They are survivors, campaigners, political advocates, feminists, LGBTQ activists, working moms, staunch opponents of racial discrimination and inspirational role models for many. Based on original interviews with over 50 current and former players and coaches, this book celebrates these remarkable women and their achievements against all odds.

Trinacria Editions Queens of Sicily 1061-1266: The queens consort,
Book SynopsisEighteen women. Eighteen stories. Each one unique. Some never told before. They are the semi-forgotten women of European medieval history. This is the first compendium of detailed scholarly biographies of the countesses and queens of the Kingdom of Sicily during the Hauteville and Hohenstaufen reigns, based on original research in medieval charters, chronicles and letters, augmented by extensive on-site research at castles, cathedrals and towns across Europe. The multicultural Kingdom of Sicily described here encompassed the island and nearly half of the Italian peninsula. It was one of the most powerful kingdoms of Europe and the Mediterranean. Its queens came from Italy, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece and elsewhere, constituting a cosmopolitan sisterhood. The book includes eighteen biographies of varying length and such details as original translations from medieval records (in Latin and Sicilian). It contains twenty pages of maps, two dozen genealogical tables, photos of royal charters and other manuscripts, pictures of places the author visited while researching this work, a detailed timeline, over seven hundred endnotes and a lengthy index. Reflecting research in several countries, this is a peer-reviewed monograph in the Sicilian Medieval Studies series. The volume is printed on off-white, acid-free paper. It is a useful, informative reference for scholars yet highly readable for armchair historians. Any chapter of this volume would be suitable as an academic paper were it published as an article in a scholarly journal. Particularly lengthy and interesting are the chapters on Judith of Evreux, Joanna of England and Constance of Sicily. The longest, most detailed chapter is the one dedicated to Margaret of Navarre, drawn largely from the author's biography of that queen published in 2016. An insightful introduction considers Sicily's queens in the context of Italian history and the larger field of women's studies. This book is pure, traditional biography, always fascinating in itself. A consideration of queenship, though present, is kept to a minimum, and the feminism speaks for itself. This is not a tiresome tome but the erudite treatment of a subject that is entrancing in its own right, without the need for endless, often circular, commentary and analysis. The lives of these women were anything but boring. As regent, and the most powerful woman in Europe, Margaret jailed her suspected enemies without so much as a second thought. Joanna went on crusade, oversaw a siege, and ordered the torture of the archer who killed her brother, Richard the Lionhearted. Living in Palermo, the former kingdom's royal capital, affords the author a closer, more personal view of the experience of these women than one gets from a historian writing thousands of miles away. While most scholars writing in English about Sicilian history undertake brief research trips to the island, Jackie Alio's intimate familiarity with the place and its culture benefits the work and the reader at every step. It is rare indeed to read a book about Sicily written in English by somebody fluent not only in English, Italian, French and Spanish but also Sicilian. Among the wealth of material included is an original translation of the poem of Ciullo of Alcamo, the longest surviving example of the romantic court poetry of the Sicilian School, accompanied by the Medieval Sicilian text. Included with the 'extra' features is information on the crown of Queen Constance (shown on the cover) and the reliquary pendant worn by Queen Margaret. This is a landmark work. Until now, most of what has been published about most of these women, even in Italian, has been superficial. It cannot be overemphasized that this book is an epic in its field. Until now, anybody seeking to read about these women had to consult numerous books and hard-to-find articles to get this information. Has anybody in living memory met a Queen of Sicily outside the pages of a book? An unusual feature of this volume is a previously-unpublished interview of a royal princess who knew Queen Maria Sophia of the Two Sicilies, Sicily's last queen consort, who died in 1925, a detail that reminds the reader that the kingdom described in these pages survived in some form into the nineteenth century. This book is a unique, long-awaited contribution to the field of royal medieval biography. It fills a gaping void in the subfield of reginal studies and the study of southern Italy, and indeed medieval Europe generally. No other work ever published has presented such accurate, informative biographies of all of the queens of Sicily during Norman and Swabian rule. Many studies are informative. This one is an enlightening journey with some very special women.

Book SynopsisThis informative supplement to the author's Queens of Sicily 1061-1266 further explores the queens' use of power and the Sicilian cultural identity forged by these women. Chapters are dedicated to topics such as: the queens' suppression of adversaries, reginal patronage, titles and heraldry, words spoken by the queens, court cuisine (including recipes) and poetry (with original translations of a number of poems of the Sicilian School), places the queens lived, sexuality and marriage, and more. A chapter lists work by fellow historians. As a cornerstone in the emerging field of Sicilian queenship, this book begins a new conversation in medieval women's studies, laying the foundation for work to come.

Brill Exiled Pilgrims: Memoirs of Pre-Cultural Revolution Zhiqing
Book SynopsisExiled Pilgrims contains thirty-two personal accounts by people who, as teenagers, went to rural China in 1964 and 1965. Barred from high school or college by political discrimination, the authors left the cities for the countryside in hopes of redeeming their “original sin” while making a difference in rural China with their hard work, only to find out that their idealism was futile in a mundane world and absurd time. Thus their pilgrimage to an illusory utopia turned into a painful search for truth and a tough struggle to liberate themselves against enormous odds. The book is the first and only collection of stories by members of a once marginalized and heretofore largely unheard-of group in contemporary China. "The stories of these young 'exiled pilgrims' bring the reader uplifting examples of the resilience of the human spirit. Their stories are heart-breaking, but the voice is never cynical, and hope is a constant. Exiled Pilgrims is a treasure." Carole Head, High Point University "The stories compiled here detail the daily life of a strange and fascinating period, always with emotion, often with humor, showing that one can speak about serious things without being dry. Reading this book is an excellent and pleasant way to understand the real China under Mao." Michel Bonnin, School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, Paris "These individualized accounts reflect the shining—and somewhat sad—lives of pre-Cultural Revolution zhiqing. In their stories, the authors not only record their personal experiences, but also provide insightful explanation for the origins, evolution, and impact of such phenomena as the implementation of the class line at schools and the utopian orientation among the Chinese youth in the early and mid-1960s. Together with the valuable photos and rare documents, stories in Exiled Pilgrims give us a fairly comprehensive portrayal of the collective journey of pre-Cultural Revolution zhiqing." Liu Xiaomeng, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, BeijingTrade Review"...in his book, Exiled Pilgrims: Memoirs of Pre-Cultural Revolution Zhiqing, Peng Deng, a zhiqing-turned historian in the United States, provides us with touching stories that unveil the experience of 1.3 million youths who went to rural China before the Cultural Revolution thereby rescuing a crucial component of the history of Shangshanxiaxiang (上山下乡/Sending-down or Rustication Campaign) from public oblivion. [...] Deng's Exiled Pilgrims, with original zhiqing narratives, stands out in telling honest truth. [...] Exiled Pilgrims contains precious primary source materials for students of the history of contemporary China before, during, and after the Cultural Revolution. It is also a great reference book for the studies of gender and Chinese society, if students look closely into the different destinies and distinct personal feelings of male and female zhiqing in the stories." Qian Liu, American Review of Chinese Studies, volume 18, no. 1 (Spring 2017) "This book fills a void in the existing literature on China's zhiging experiences and is a must-read for both serious scholars who specialize in China studies and anyone who is interested in learning and understanding the twists and turns in the first thirty years of the PRC's history and overall legacy of the Maoist era." Brill The Quest for Forbidden Lands: Nikolai Przhevalskii and his Followers on Inner Asian Tracks
Book SynopsisThe Quest for Forbidden Lands: Nikolai Przhevalskii and his Followers on Inner Asian Tracks is a collection of biographical essays of outstanding Russian explorers of Inner Asia of the late nineteenth – early twentieth century, Nikolai Przhevalskii, Vsevolod Roborovskii, Mikhail Pevtsov, Petr Kozlov, Grigorii Grumm-Grzhimailo and Bronislav Grombchevskii, almost all senior army officers. Their expeditions were organized by the Imperial Russian Geographical Society with some assistance from the military department with a view of exploring and mapping the vast uncharted territories of Inner Asia, being the Western periphery of the Manchu-Chinese Empire. The journeys of these pioneers were a great success and gained world renown for their many discoveries and the valuable collections they brought from the region.Trade Review"[...] an extremely useful introduction to the broader place of Przhevalskii’s explorations [...] The Quest for Forbidden Lands admirably succeeds in its stated mission of introducing to a wider audience the influence of Przhevalskii on the expeditions of a range of scientists and geographers, while simultaneously placing his expeditions in a greater context. Seven maps of expeditions, along with countless pertinent drawings and photographs, richly enhance this volume." - Helen Hundley, Wichita State University, in: The Russian Review 78.2 (2019), p.340Table of ContentsContents Preface Andreyev, M. Quercus Publishing Ladies in Waiting: a history of court life from
Book Synopsis'Provides a wealth of juicy anecdotal material about five centuries of court life' New York Times'Naughty Knickers version of our island story' Daily Mail---------------------------------------------Ladies in Waiting chronicles the lives of famous and infamous ladies who served royalty, casting a fresh, intimate angle on four hundred years of monarchy. For centuries, the most beautiful, able and aristocratic women in England competed for positions at court. Some who came to serve were remarkable for their learning and exemplary virtue, but others were notable for promiscuity and lack of scruple, drawn to court by a lust for money and power. Several ladies-in-waiting became royal mistresses, showing few qualms about betraying the queen consorts they ostensibly served. If bedding the King was not an option open to all, many ladies came to court in hope of finding husbands, only to succumb to constant assaults on their virtue or to find themselves denied permission by their sovereign to marry. Drawing on an enormous variety of sources, Anne Somerset provides an illuminating guide to the character, profligate or pious, of each court. Contained within the stories of the individual women is a consistently entertaining commentary on the manners, morals and shifting mentality of the royal, the rich, and the prominent throughout the centuries, resulting in social history at its most enjoyable and vibrant.Trade ReviewAnne Somerset's gossipy Ladies in Waiting provides a wealth of juicy anecdotal material about five centuries of court life from Henry VIII to Elizabeth II * New York Times *Extraordinarily enjoyable... Basic Books Fighting Words: The Bold American Journalists Who
Book SynopsisAt a time when print media reigned supreme and newspapers were legion, Dorothy Thompson, John Gunther, Vincent Sheean, and Rayna Raphaelson Prohme impulsively left their homes to reinvent themselves as international journalists and adopt the power of the press as their own. In Fighting Words, acclaimed historian Nancy F. Cott follows these four largely unknown young Americans to reveal how foreign journalism shaped America's sense of its place in the world.Dorothy, John, Vincent, and Rayna serve as a counter to the devil-may-care jazz babies of the 1920s who scandalized their elders to no purpose beyond frivolity. Instead, the four directly confronted major political challenges that still reverberate today- democracy versus authoritarianism, global responsibility versus isolationism, press objectivity versus propaganda. They revealed the political instability that circled most of the globe as a legacy of the redrawing of world order after World War I. By the early 1930s, unlike Americans at home fixated on the Depression and New Deal, they were in the antifascist vanguard, well aware of Hitler's impending menace. At the same time, they were actively rethinking relationships between men and women. All four navigated sexual affairs and frictions, marriages and divorces. Their experiences traced the development not only of international journalism but also the making of the modern self at a time when the value of sexual freedom grated against traditional morality.A group biography of four extraordinary Americans abroad, and a paean to a golden age of journalism, Fighting Words shows how these young cosmopolitans reshaped America's sense of its own place in the world.

Oneworld Publications Our Israeli Diary: Of That Time, Of That Place
Book SynopsisIn May 1978 Harold Pinter and Antonia Fraser visited Israel at the time of the 30th Anniversary of Independence. It was three years after they first lived together; neither had set foot in Israel before. Based in Jerusalem, they toured many of the country’s historic sites: from Bethlehem to the fortress of Masada, encountering future Prime Minister Shimon Peres, Mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek, Jackie Kennedy and a long-lost cousin of Harold’s on a kibbutz. It was a trip during which Pinter’s feelings about his heritage emerged for the first time. As he said himself: ‘For the first time I feel Jewish’. This diary was kept daily by Antonia Fraser: the vivid narrative and descriptions (Antonia swimming in the Dead Sea while Harold had a beer) are leavened with humour, occasionally wry where Harold’s quirks were concerned, and always tender. Above all, it is a unique picture of a time and place – and a touching insight into fifteen days in the lives of two writers, one Jewish, one Catholic, one a playwright and one a biographer, who were also a devoted couple.Trade Review‘A compelling mixture of charm, humour and wisdom.’ * TLS *‘A little gem of a book that offers a snapshot of Israel 30 years after independence; sharp insights into a range of characters from Shimon Peres to Jackie Kennedy.’ * Jewish Chronicle *‘Engaging…above all an interesting account of a time and a place.’ * Financial Times *‘Wise and witty…Fraser’s personality shines through here: ever curious, good-natured, with an ear for memorable one-liners.’ * Observer *‘Rather fun…unguarded, unpolished and often quite funny.’ * Telegraph *‘...a fabulous book...[Antonia Fraser is] a natural-born conjuror of lost realities... Exemplary, unparalleled, and peerless.’ -- Sebastian Barry
