Cambridge University Press CognitiveBehavioral Therapy for
Book SynopsisAvoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a new diagnosis commonly encountered by a range of health care professionals, yet currently no standard of care exists. This book outlines a new cognitive-behavioral treatment for patients with ARFID that has been developed in response to this urgent clinical need.Trade Review'This practical, accessible manual, written by two of the leading experts in the emerging avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) field, will be a very welcome addition to the clinician's library. I anticipate that it will quickly become a much used volume by anyone offering care and treatment to patents with this disorder. Until now there has been very little by way of guidance in terms of evidence based treatments specifically for ARFID. This clearly written book, based on sound theoretical principles, enables the outstanding skills, expertise and insights of its authors to be shared by a much wider audience, which can only benefit patient care.' Rachel Bryant-Waugh, Head of the Feeding and Eating Disorders Service, the Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (DCAMH), Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children'It is rare that a newly conceptualized mental disorder is introduced into systems of nosology without an existing treatment approach with some evidence for efficacy; but, this was the case with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Now, from one of the leading eating disorders centers in the world comes a very well-conceived stage model of intervention that can be personalized for the individual patient, as well as the patient's family. Anyone treating eating disorders should find this new clinical manual invaluable.' David H. Barlow, Boston University'Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) sounds a little less unfamiliar today than when it was introduced by DSM-5 only five years ago. Since then, a small cadre of clinical researchers has devoted considerable energy to explore treatments for this patient population. Thomas and Eddy have been leaders in this domain. Through their focused efforts, the authors have put together an extraordinarily helpful treatment manual that everyone who wants to learn more about ARFID, whether a treating clinician, curious trainee, or worried parent, would be well advised to consult. This clinician manual first provides the reader with an excellent psycho-educational overview of ARFID, before delineating the four stages of CBT-AR. The authors round out this manual by demonstrating their treatment approach by way of five elucidating clinical case examples. This book is a most welcome addition to the small family of clinical treatment manuals for eating disorders.' Daniel Le Grange, University of California, San Francisco'As an ARFID advocate, author on the topic, and mother to a recovered child with ARFID, I couldn't be more thrilled with this book. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder is vital toward the education and treatment of ARFID. With comprehensive and detailed information, workable steps for treatment, and actual case studies, this book is desperately needed in the eating disorder community, and one that I wish had been available when our family was struggling to find answers. There is much to learn about ARFID, but this manual is a terrific starting point in helping clinicians, physicians, therapists, and even parents learn more about this very prevalent and very mysterious eating disorder that affects children and adults of all ages.' Stephanie Elliot, ARFID advocate, author of Sad Perfect'This book is important. For the first time we have a detailed yet comprehensive account of how to treat patients with 'avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder'. The authors are to be congratulated on producing this invaluable resource.' Christopher G. It provides the tools to help these clients develop emotional processing skills they can implement throughout their life, from coping with mental health issues and substance abuse, to navigating prejudice and social pressure, to building a career and developing a family.Trade ReviewAlex Stitt has written a truly delightful, comprehensive, thoughtful, and engaging book about working with trans and nonbinary clients in therapy. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - a mindfulness based approach - provides a meta framework for understanding gender, sexuality, and intersectional identities. I have learned so much from Alex Stitt's perspective, about the complexity of gender, the power of relational therapy, and of course, about ACT - a series of skills and techniques available to all clinicians, regardless of your background and training. The tone is deceptively casual, the language is decidedly queer, and the range of tools is broad and comprehensive. -- Arlene Lev, School of Social Welfare, University of Albany, Choices Counseling and Consulting, Author of Transgender Emergence: Therapeutic Guidelines for Working With Gender Variant People and Their FamiliesAlex Stitt has accomplished something wonderful; they have fully elaborated the relevance of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy to working with gender and gender identity. Clinicians and students will appreciate the flexibility and creativity that underlie effective psychotherapy sessions when guided by the Socratic method as an innovative approach to self-exploration.Trade ReviewAs core strategic interventions in cognitive behavioral therapy, Socratic methods of dialogue and questioning are often neglected or poorly understood philosophically and historically. Overholser beautifully and clearly describes how valuable the Socratic method is for enhancing the therapeutic relationship. This is a must read volume for any mental health professional. -- Aaron T. Beck, University of PennsylvaniaI have long followed James Overholser's work on the use of the Socratic method in psychotherapy. I have always wondered why he had not written a book on the subject. Now he has and it is well worth the wait. It should be read, digested, and acted upon by all therapists. -- Windy Dryden, Goldsmiths University of LondonOverholser provides foundational conceptual knowledge of Socratic methods, which is often missing in purely technical descriptions of the procedure. He artfully combines this theoretical material with very practical clinical guidelines for scaffolding Socratic dialogues. This is a complex, intricate subject presented in an extraordinarily accessible manner. -- Robert Friedberg, Palo Alto UniversityThis is a stimulating, creative statement and guide for all manner of psychotherapists: psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and students . . . Oxford University Press Overcoming Eating Disorders Therapist Guide A cognitivebehavioral therapy approach for bulimia nervosa and bingeeating disorder 2e Treatments That Work
Book SynopsisThe Overcoming Eating Disorders, Second Edition program addresses the cognitive-behavioral treatment of Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. CBT has been proven the most effective treatment for helping patients improve their eating habits and overcome their disorder. The treatment described is divided into three overlapping phases: behavior change, identifying binge triggers, and relapse prevention. The main focus of the program is the normalization of eating. Patients use self-monitoring forms to track their eating habits on a daily basis while they work toward establishing a pattern of 3 meals and 2 snacks per day eaten at regular intervals. Once a regular pattern of eating has been established, patients move on to recognizing and eliminating their triggers for binging and purging. CBT techniques like problem-solving and cognitive restructuring help patients deal with negative mood states, faulty interpersonal interactions, and errors in thinking. The final phase of treatment consists of a review of the positive changes that have occurred during treatment, as well as a discussion of any residual problems and ways to handle setbacks or lapses. Homework exercises are assigned at each session and play an important role in keeping patients motivated throughout the duration of treatment. This newly revised and updated Therapist Guide includes expanded information regarding weight and shape concerns and an entirely new chapter on adapting the treatment for use as a time-limited, therapist-assisted self-help program. Oxford University Press Trichotillomania Therapist Guide An ACTenhanced Behavior Therapy Approach An ACTEnhanced Behavior Therapy Approach Therapist Guide Treatments That Work
Book SynopsisTrichotillomania (TTM) is a complex disorder that is difficult to treat as few effective therapeutic options exist. Behaviour therapy has the greatest empirical support, but the number of mental health providers familiar with TTM and its treatment is quite small. This manual was written as a tool for therapists to become familiar with an effective treatment for TTM.The treatment approach described in this guide blends traditional behaviour with therapy elements of habit reversal training and stimulus control techniques with the more contemporary behavioural elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In the first phase of the program, clients are taught skills for stopping and preventing their unconscious pulling episodes. In the second phase, clients are introduced to ACT. Unlike traditional interventions that aim to change type or frequency of pulling-related cognitions in the hopes of reducing urges to pull hair, this innovative program uses strategies to change the function of these cognitions. Clients are taught to see urges for what they really are and to accept their pulling-related throughts, feelings, and urges wihtout fighting against them. This is accomplished through discussions about the function of language and defusion exercises that show the client how to respond to thoughts about pulling less literally. Over the course of 10 weeks, clients learn to be aware of their pulling and warning signals, use self-management strategies for stopping and preventing pulling, stop fighting against their pulling-related urges and thoughts, and work towards increasing their quality of life. Self-monitoring and homework assignments keep clients motivated and engaged throughout.Designed to be used with older adolescents and adults, this innovative intervention has proven efficacy and is sure to be a powerful tool for the clinician who treats TTM.Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press Managing Tourette Syndrome Parent Workbook A Behavioral Intervention Treatments That Work
Book SynopsisIn 2002, the Tourette Syndrome Association formed the TS Behavioral Sciences Consortium (BSC). The charge of the BSC was to develop and test nonpharmacological treatment options for individuals, both children and adults with Tourette Syndrome. This manual is the result of their work, and represents the most scientifically effective behavioral treatment for Tourette Syndrome available today. The treatment program uses Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for children and adults with chronic tic disorder. Individual treatment is based at its core on awareness training, the development of a specific competing response for each tic, and the use of functionally-based strategies for the elimination of tic-exacerbating antecedent and consequent variables. In addition, individual treatment includes techniques designed to enhance patient compliance, including social support and an inconvenience review, as well as scheduled time for the therapist and client to discuss areas of functioning that individuals with TS may find difficult, such as social/familial difficulties and disruptive/anger/rage behavior. Each week, clients are given homework assignments, to be done 4-5 times per week, consisting of 20 to 30 minutes of awareness and competing response training to tics addressed in session. The client will be encouraged to keep tally marks to monitor tic behavior. Home-based monitoring and competing response training are reviewed at each session. All homework assignments will be available in the companion workbook.

Book SynopsisThe fifth edition of Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic, Workbook, has been fully revised and updated to offer helpful, scientifically proven strategies and techniques for dealing with both panic disorder and agoraphobia. The program outlined is based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and is organized by skill, with each chapter building on the one before it. The Workbook covers the importance of record-keeping and monitoring progress, as well as breathing techniques and thinking skills, with the main focus of the treatment involving the importance of learning how to face agoraphobic situations, and the often-frightening physical symptoms of panic, from an entirely new perspective. Self-assessment quizzes, homework exercises, and interactive forms allow clients to become active participants in their own treatment, and to learn to manage panic attacks, anxiety about panic, and avoidance of panic and agoraphobic situations.Trade ReviewI had the good fortune of being one of the first groups of therapists to receive training in the delivery of PCT from Drs. Barlow and Craske at The State University of New York at Albany. I used the first version and each of the editions in my private practice and published evidence of its effectiveness in a private practice setting. The fourth edition is currently used in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan for training therapists and in our clinical work. This 5th edition contains all the state of the art and user-friendly format, but importantly, it now integrates an inhibitory learning focus to maximize the effectiveness of the exposure procedures. I enthusiastically welcome this new edition of this state-of-the-art treatment of panic disorder and agoraphobia. * Ricks Warren, PhD, ABPP, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan Medical School *This suite of therapist manuals and patient workbooks, focusing on cutting edge CBT treatment for panic disorder, remains a classic in the field. The authors are internationally renowned for their expertise in this area and have updated the text with new research, an enhanced emphasis on inhibitory learning to inform the process and conduct of exposure exercises, and new and improved case material. Starting with the previous version, the program pays more attention to variability in how fast or slow a client is able move through the treatment, improving the patient—treatment 'match'. The end result facilitates implementation for the user and is in a way like having a personal supervision experience with the authors. * Peter Roy-Byrne, MD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of Washington School of Medicine *The Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic volumes - the therapist guide and the workbooks for clients - are indisputably the finest evidence-based books for helping people overcome panic disorder. This book is particularly appealing, because of the number of clinical illustrations provided. These show in detail how Socratic dialogue can be developed so that it can both help the client and be adjusted to our personal style. Reading the book it is both apparent and inspiring that each author has their own personal style. They all describe case examples using their own "Therapist's voice" and we learn that there are so many variations and ways to develop the Socratic dialogue to make it one's own....I am pleased to have this book on my bookshelf and will return to it and learn more as I meet new challenges. * Anna Törnquist *Table of Contents1: Christine A Padesky and Helen Kennerley: Dialogues for Discovery: What? Oxford University Press Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management
Book SynopsisAn explosion of interest in the applications of hypnosis for clinical problems, especially pain, has led to a wide accumulation of research on hypnosis as a viable, beneficial supplement to treatment protocols. Over the past two decades, published controlled trials have confirmed that hypnosis treatments are effective for reducing daily pain intensity, increasing activity level, and improving mood and sleep quality in individuals with chronic pain. Moreover, evidence also suggests that hypnotic procedures can increase the beneficial effects of other treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Based on these findings, there is a lack of practical resources in the field that offer recommendations for incorporating hypnosis and hypnotic protocols into treatment for pain management. This therapist guide fills this gap by distilling the techniques empirically validated by these clinical trials into one comprehensive, user-friendly volume. Organized into three parts, Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management summarizes the findings from research, examines the effects of hypnosis on pain, and provides step-by-step instructions for performing hypnotic inductions and making hypnotic suggestions. Designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding patient workbook, this unique therapist guide is written for clinicians who treat patients with chronic pain and who wish to incorporate hypnosis and hypnotic procedures into their treatment protocols, or those clinicians who already have training in clinical hypnosis and hope to acquire the skills needed to apply it to pain management. An excellent blueprint to understanding pain and the fundamentals of how hypnosis combined with CBT can offer pain amelioration. Perfect, even for uninitiated practitioners who wish to use empirically based scripts.--Jeffrey Zeig, Ph.D., The Milton Erickson FoundationPain can too easily enslave people, holding them captive in many different ways. It is a liberating theme of empowerment that echoes throughout Dr. Jensen''s work: he empowers clinicians to work more knowledgeably and skillfully with people who suffer painful conditions using his therapist guide, and he encourages the suffering individual to break free from pain''s grip with the practical pain management skills taught in his workbook. Dr. Jensen''s vision for the many ways hypnosis can help reduce the debilitating effects of painful conditions is fresh, inspiring and should be regularly integrated into every pain management program.--Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and author of Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis (Third Edition) and Treating Depression with HypnosisTrade ReviewReaders will come away with an overview of how to approach using hypnosis with those experiencing chronic pain and a good sense of both the issues involved in working with chronic pain and in using hypnosis. * Dr Angela Busuttil, The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; Part I Understanding Pain ; Chapter 1: The Biological Basis of Pain ; Chapter 2: Psychological Factors that Influence Pain ; Part II Understanding Hypnosis ; Chapter 3: What is Hypnosis? ; Chapter 4: What Hypnosis can do for Pain ; Part III Using Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management ; Chapter 5: Patient Assessment and Preparation ; Chapter 6: Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management: The Basics ; Chapter 7: Hypnotic Inductions ; Chapter 8: Suggestions for Pain and Symptom Management ; Chapter 9: Suggestions for Thought and Mood Management ; Chapter 10: Suggestions for Behavior, Activity, and Sleep Management ; Chapter 11: End of the Session: Post-hypnotic Suggestions and Reorienting ; Chapter 12: Summary and Consolidation ; Pain Evaluation Form ; Appendix of Self-Report Measures Assessing Pain, Pain-Related Beliefs and Coping, and Clinical Success ; References ; About the Authors
