  • Oxford University Press, USA The Essential Child Origins of Essentialism in Everyday Thought Oxford Series in Cognitive Development

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNumerous fields stake claims about essentialism but this is the first book to address the issues surrounding essentialism from the perspective of developmental psychology. Gelman synthesizes 15 years of empirical research on essentialism into a coherent framework, examining children''s thinking and ways in which language influences thought. She argues that young children''s use of concepts such as dog, man, or intelligence, reflects their deep commitment to the presence of these categories'' properties that extends beyond the observable information about objects. The presence of this commitment in children also means that they do not come into the world as passive recipients of data, but rather have an organizational scheme that supports categories. This volume will be of interest to developmental, cognitive, and social psychologists, as well as to scholars in cognitive science and philosophy.Trade Review"The field of cognitive development can be grateful to Susan Gelman for the gift of a wonderfully integrative account of essentialist thinking. This is by far the most comprehensive account of converging findings that paint a compelling picture of previously unknown aspects of children's thinking. She writes quite well and delights us with her humor." --Human Development "The field of cognitive development can be grateful to Susan Gelman for the gift of a wonderfully integrative account of essentialist thinking. This is by far the most comprehensive account of converging findings that paint a compelling picture of previously unknown aspects of children's thinking. She writes quite well and delights us with her humor." --Human Development "Susan Gelman's The Essential Child is both deep and accessible. She does the field a great service just by pulling together her truly remarkable research program into one integrated story. In doing so, she shows how the data that support the claim that young children have essentialist commitments challenge deeply held views about the nature of young children's thinking and about the nature of human concepts in general. Anybody concerned with understanding conceptual development and anybody concerned with understanding human concepts should read this book." --Susan E. Carey, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University "This is a path-breaking book on children's conceptual development with important implications for virtually all of cognitive science." --Douglas Medin, Professor of Psychology, Northwestern UniversityTable of ContentsPART I: THE PHENOMENA: NOTES ON RESEARCH METHODS; PART II: MECHANISMS OF ACQUISITION; PART III: IMPLICATIONS AND SPECULATIONS

  • Oxford University Press The Foundations of Mind

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Foundations of the Mind, Jean Mandler presents a new theory of cognitive development in infancy, focusing on the processes through which perceptual information is transformed into concepts. Drawing on extensive research, Mandler explores preverbal conceptualisation and shows how it forms the basis for both thought and language. She also emphasises the importance of distinguishing automatic perceptual processes from attentive conceptualisation, and argues that these two kinds of learning follow different principles, so it is crucial to specify the processes required by a given task. Countering both strong nativist and empiricist views, Mandler provides a fresh and markedly different perspective on early cognitive development, painting a new picture of the abilities and accomplishments of infants and the development of the mind.Trade Review"Mandler's book offers a powerful new synthesis on the emergence of cognitive capacities in infancy and early childhood. It is a compelling and important treatment of the origins of higher level thought from a cognitive science perspective. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in cognition or cognitive development." -Frank C. Keil, Professor of Psychology and Linguistics, Yale University "The perceptual/conceptual debate about the origins of meaning in the human mind continues to rage in the cognitive sciences, a debate that Mandler confronts head on. A masterful overthrow of a number of entrenched Piagetian assumptions, this eloquently written book about the conceptual capacities of young infants and the roots of language and consciousness is backed by extensive, innovative experimental data." -Annette Karmiloff-Smith, Professor of Neurocognitive Development and Head of Neurocognitive Development Unit, Institute of Child Health, LondonTable of Contents1. • Clarendon Press The Essential Turing

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAlan Turing, pioneer of computing and WWII codebreaker, is one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. In this volume for the first time his key writings are made available to a broad, non-specialist readership. They make fascinating reading both in their own right and for their historic significance: contemporary computational theory, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and artificial life all spring from this ground-breaking work, which is also rich in philosophical and logical insight. An introduction by leading Turing expert Jack Copeland provides the background and guides the reader through the selection. About Alan TuringAlan Turing FRS OBE, (1912-1954) studied mathematics at King''s College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of King''s in March 1935, at the age of only 22. In the same year he invented the abstract computing machines - now known simply as Turing machines - on which all subsequent stored-program digital computers are modelTrade ReviewThe editor not only presents the Turing seminal papers and ingenious contributions to fields he was far ahead his time, he also gives easy access for non-specialists by his comprehensive introductions and comments. * Volker Peckhaus, Zentralblatt MATH 1076 *Table of ContentsAlan Turing 1912-1954 ; Computable Numbers: A Guide ; 1. • Clarendon Press Reference and Consciousness Oxford Cognitive Science Series

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat explains our ability to refer to the objects we perceive? John Campbell argues that our capacity for reference is explained by our capacity to attend selectively to the objects of which we are aware; that this capacity for conscious attention to a perceived object is what provides us with our knowledge of reference. When someone makes a reference to a perceived object, your knowledge of which thing they are talking about is constituted by your consciously attending to the relevant object. Campbell articulates the connections between these three concepts: reference, attention and consciousness. He looks at the metaphysical conception of the environment demanded by such an account, and at the demands imposed on our conception of consciousness by the point that consciousness of objects is what explains our capacity to think about them. He argues that empirical work on the binding problem can illuminate our grasp of the way in which we have knowledge of reference, supplied by conscious attention to the relevant object.Reference and Consciousness illuminates fundamental problems about thought, reference, and experience by looking at the underlying psychological mechanisms on which conscious attention depends. It is an original and stimulating contribution to philosophy and to cognitive science. The Oxford Cognitive Science Series is a forum for the best contemporary work in this flourishing field, where various disciplines - cognitive psychology, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and computational theory - join forces in the investigation of thought, awareness, understanding, and associated workings of the mind. Each book will constitute an original contribution to its subject, but will be accessible beyond the ranks of specialists, so as to reach a broad interdisciplinary readership. The series will be carefully shaped and steered with the aim of representing the most important developments in the field and bringing together its constituent disciplines.General Editors: Martin Davies, James Higginbotham, Philip Johnson-Laird, Christopher Peacocke, Kim PlunkettTrade ReviewThis is important work which should be widely read. * The Philosophical Quarterly *... this book is an exciting contribution to an area which urgently needs a new sense of direction. Campbell has opened up an original set of problems and has identified links between subjects that have been pursued independently, to the impoverishment of each. * The Philosophical Quarterly *This is the most striking and interesting of the long series of recent books on consciousness. Refreshingly, it has absolutely nothing to say about the philosophical preoccupations standard in this area. * The Philosophical Quarterly *Campbell has many important things to say about the mechanisms that relate perception to action, memory and our awareness of space. All readers will be able to learn from his treatment of these issues. * David Papineau, Times Literary Supplement, 2003 *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. Experiential Highlighting ; 2.
