Book SynopsisDavid Tomasi presents new, ground-breaking research on the science and application of Mind-Body Medicine strategies to improve clinical outcomes in inpatient psychiatry settings. Much more than a list of therapeutic recommendations, this book is a thorough description of how Mind-Body Medicine can be successfully applied, from a therapeutic as well as from an organisational, cost-effective analysis viewpoint, to the full spectrum of psychiatric treatments. Furthermore, this study examines the role of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment teams, with a special focus on the profession and the role of psychotherapists and group therapists, thereby providing solid scientific evidence of the benefits of patient-provider therapeutic alliances. In this sense, this book serves as a guide for professionals and institutions both in the private and the public sphere, to learn effective treatment and management strategies.

  • Signal Transduction in Affective Disorders

Springer Verlag, Japan Signal Transduction in Affective Disorders

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRecent progress in brain science has been remarkable, especially with regard to advances in the area of neuroscience. Particularly in the past decade, there have been many important discoveries about signal transduction in the brain. With this background, biological research in affective disorders has become well developed in relation to neural signaling. However, this field is fairly hard to understand comprehensively, and there is relatively little integrative work with clinical psychiatry in spite of the involvement of a wide variety of scien tific disciplines. This monograph brings together up-to-date reviews from several young Japanese scientists who work in basic and clinical neuroscience. The intention is to explain in plain language the information that has evolved on signal transduction in terms of the biological abnormalities and mechanisms of anti depressants. The model shown on the cover (and on page 24) is intended to help the reader understand signal transduction in the brain and the patho physiology of affective disorders as well as the mechanisms of antidepressants.Table of ContentsEffects of Antidepressants on Transmembrane Signaling.- Role of G Proteins in Signal Transduction.- Effects of Chronic Administration of Antidepressants on Signal Transduction.- The Phospholipase C System in Affective Disorders.- Targets for Antidepressants.- References.- Serotonergic and Noradrenergic Neuromodulation in the Hippocampus and the Mechanism of Action of Antidepressants.- Pathophysiological Model of Affective Disorders and Monoaminergic Function.- Development of Novel Antidepressants and Their Pharmacological Profiles.- Modulation of Serotonergic Neurotransmission by SSRIs.- Convergence of Serotonergic and Noradrenergic Neurotransmission: Neurodynailiic Viewpoint.- Conclusion.- References.- Serotonin-2A Receptor Function in Affective Disorders.- Role of 5-HT2A Receptor Function in Etiology of Affective Disorders.- Postmortem Brain Studies.- Neuroendocrine Studies.- Platelet Studies.- Calcium Mobilization and Affective Diosorders.- 5-HTMnduced Calcium Response in Nonmedicated Depressed Patients.- Change in 5-HT-Induced Calcium Response During Drug Treatment.- Other Calcium Studies.- Mechanism of 5-HT2A Receptor Hyperfunction.- Conclusion.- References.- Immunological Aspects of Mood Disorders: Interaction Between Cytokines and Intracellular Calcium Signaling.- Immunological Dysfunction in Mood Disorders.- Stress and Immunological Function.- Alteration of Immune Function and Mood.- Cytokines and Nitric Oxide Pathway.- Cytokines and Calcium Function.- Conclusion.- References.- The Role of G Proteins in the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Affective Disorders.- Changes in the Biological Hypotheses for the Pathophysiology of Manic-Depressive Illness.- Antidepressants and G Proteins.- Receptors and G Proteins.- G Protein and Adenylyl Cyclase.- Direct Action on G Protein.- Receptor Reconciliation Theory of the Action of Antidepressants.- Postmortem Study in Affective Disorders.- Postnatal Developmental Changes of G Protein in Human Brains.- Imbalance Hypothesis of G-Protein Function in Affective Disorders.- Selectivity of Treatment Drugs in the Light of Signal Transduction.- Conclusion.- References.- Protein Phosphorylation System in the Mechanism of Action of Antidepressants.- Protein Phosphorylation Systems.- cAMP-Dependent Phosphorylation System.- Effect of Antidepressant Treatment on the PKA System.- Effect of Antidepressant Treatment on Phosphorylation of Substrate Proteins for PKA.- Effect of Antidepressant Treatment on Phosphorylation of MAP2.- Effect of Antidepressant Treatment on Microtubule Assembly.- Conclusion.- References.- Stress and BDNF Signal Transduction: Implications for Stress-Related Psychiatric Disorders.- Physiological Functions of BDNF.- Regulation of BDNF Expression.- BDNF Signal Transduction Cascade.- Stress-Induced Hippocampal Cellular Damage.- Stress and BDNF.- Co-Administration of a Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor and the Response to Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor.- Conclusion.- References.- Postreceptor Signal-Transduction Systems as Potential Targets of Lithium.- Lithium and Postreceptor Signal-Transduction.- Phosphoinositide Metabolism.- Adenylyl Cyclase System.- G Proteins.- Protein Phosphorylation and Gene Expression.- Conclusion.- References.- Participation of Cytoskeletal Elements in Neuronal Signal Transduction: New Insight into the Molecular Basis of Antidepressant Action.- Tubulin, G Proteins, and Adenylyl Cyclase Signal Transduction.- Tubulin - G Protein Interaction.- Cytoskeletal Elements and Antidepressant Drugs.- References.- In Vivo Investigations of Signal-Transduction Systems in Affective Disorders by Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.- Which Metabolites in Signal-Transduction Systems Can Be Measured by MRS?.- Neurotransmitters.- Second Messengers.- Phosphoinositide System.- Other Phospholipases.- Cyclic AMP.- Clinical Applications of MRS to the Study of Signal-Transduction Systems.- Phosphoinositide System.- Choline.- Lipids.- Conclusion.- References.

Springer Developmental and Acquired Dyslexia: Neuropsychological and Neurolinguistic Perspectives

Book SynopsisIt was during a pleasant and warm (both literally and figuratively) two- week period in October, 1991 that a number of researchers, scholars and c1inicians from diverse lands gathered at the beautiful Chateau de Bonas, near Toulouse, France to discuss psychological, neuropsychological and neurolinguistic aspects of reading and writing disorders. The occasion for the serious disputations of theories, research findings and c1inical appli- cations was the Advanced Study Institute (ASI) under the auspices of the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). There was much sharing of mutual experiences, and considerable debate on some issues. There were also friendly exchanges, 'international' ping-pong, tennis matches, and bicyc1e races, and even some convivial- ity akin to that of a c1ass reunion with members telling their stories of yesterday and visions of tomorrow. All these serious scientific disputations and the friendly exchanges would not have been possible without the major assistance from NATO and other institutions and individuals. We wish to express our deep appre- ciation to Dr. L. v. da Cunha ofNATO Scientific Affairs Division, Dr. Tilo Kester and Mrs. Barbara Kester of the International Transfer of Science and Technology (ITST) for their active support and substantial assistance throughout the Advanced Study Institute; Mr. Charles Stockman and his staff of the Chateau de Bonas for looking after our stay there; Christi Martin and Xi-Wu Feng of Oklahoma State University, and the University of Saskatchewan generally for facilitating our work.Table of ContentsPreface. Springer Verlag, Singapore Disulfiram: Its Use in Alcohol Dependence and

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the value of supervised Disulfiram therapy, highlighting the many potential and unique benefits of Disulfiram. One of the oldest drugs available for the long-term management of alcohol dependence, Disulfiram remains a viable treatment option for alcohol dependence and has been shown in recent studies to be more successful in treating patients with alcohol dependence than Naltrexone, Topiramate and Acamprosate. It is also useful in dual diagnosis patients and those with co-morbid cocaine and alcohol dependence. Although Disulfiram’s mechanism of action in alcohol dependence was long thought to be its effects as a psychological deterrent, more recent studies point to potential anti-craving effects as well. In dedicated chapters, the book reviews major clinical trials of Disulfiram spanning nearly 60 years, its historical aspects and discovery, side effects, treatment protocols and uses in the context of alcohol dependence. The book also discusses the use of Disulfiram across diverse populations along with monitoring for compliance and various adverse effects that may manifest. Further topics include Disulfiram implant therapy and the role of Disulfiram in the modern long-term pharmacotherapy of alcohol dependence, as well as the role of cognitive behavior therapy in enhancing the effects of Disulfiram and the emerging role of Disulfiram in treating cocaine dependence and pathological gambling. As such, the book offers a “one-stop” comprehensive guide to all aspects of Disulfiram therapy.Table of ContentsHistory and discovery.- Mechanism of action and pharmacology.- Use in alcohol dependence.- Use in cocaine dependence.- Use in pathological gambling.- In combination with other therapies for alcohol dependence.- Side effects and their management.-Use in special populations with alcohol dependence.-Is it an underused drug.- The road ahead and future research needs.- Ethical issues.- Non psychiatric uses an overview.

Book Synopsis This book is about spiritual intelligence and its effects on mental health and quality of life. As mental health and related problems are increasing rapidly and have become a matter of great concern, there has not been a unanimous and empirical approach to assess and cure it, due to its divergence or other causes. This book is based on the most developed construct: spiritual intelligence and its effects on mental health and quality of life. Spirituality and its other constructs are one of the most interesting topics nowadays in the area of positive/indigenous/transpersonal psychology and among social/behavioral scientists. This book provides content on spirituality, spiritual intelligence, mental health, and quality of life. The book also attempts to review related literature (whether review or empirical), to have a look at past and current scenarios on spirituality and mental health and quality of life research. Through an exploration of Indian indigenous psychology, this book provides a look at mental health and the mind from an Indian psychological perspective and examines Indian psychology, taking into consideration modern psychological concepts.Table of ContentsChapter 1INTRODUCTION ............................................................................. 0-00 References.................................................................................
