Book SynopsisA virtualist is a doctor who specializes in virtual medicine. She uses tools like VR headsets, spatial acoustics, haptic feedback, and even olfactory mimicry to induce reactions in patients' bodies that help treat a variety of physiological and psychological conditions, from chronic pain, to compulsive behavior, without the use of pharmaceuticals or surgical techniques. Virtualists don't exist yet, but after reading VRx they just might. In recent years, scientists have established that people's perceptions - their subjective experiences of the world - influence how their bodies work. We typically have little control over our perceptions, particularly when we are sick. But what could we do if we did? In VRx Brennan Spiegel introduces readers to a new kind of medicine, called virtual therapeutics, answering exactly this question, using technology that is already available. It works through two basic but powerful psychological concepts: embodied cognition, the idea that thought processes involve the whole body, not just the brain; and presence, the ability of virtual reality to trick your body into thinking it's somewhere that it isn't, or can do something that it can't usually do. VRx takes readers on a mindbending journey through the ways in which these deep connections between our minds and our bodies are being put to good use. We learn about the woman who endures an exceptionally painful labor by completing breathing exercises on a digital beach, the schizophrenic patient who literally confronts the demon inside his head, the burn victims who are able to manage their pain better after traversing snowy virtual landscapes, and the doctor who confronted his own fear of mortality by watching himself die. Brimming with extraordinary stories of the power of virtual therapeutics to treat both physical and psychological conditions, VRx offers nothing short of a completely new way of healing.

Book SynopsisCarbohydrates are ubiquitous, essential molecules, as important as nucleic acids and proteins yet less well understood. Mounting data demonstrate that microbial and mammalian glycans and their protein-binding partners (lectins) play central roles in all innate and adaptive immune responses. Indeed, programmed remodeling of host glycans can modulate infection, autoimmunity, and cancer, while microbial glycoconjugates can serve as canonical innate receptor agonists that induce B cell and T cell activation. Glycobiology of the Immune Response explores the integration of state-of-the-art glycobiology and immunology to raise awareness of the multifaceted roles of glycans and lectins in the immune system NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. • Barriers and Channels Formed by Tight Junction

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Barriers and Channels Formed by Tight Junction

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisTight junctions between epithelial and endothelial cells form selective barriers and paracellular channels and regulate paracellular transport of solutes, immune cells, and drugs. More specifically, tight junctions consist of proteins that laterally interconnect neighboring cells of epithelia and endothelia. Certain proteins seal the tight junction, so that a nearly impermeable barrier develops, whereas others form channels that allow for permeation between the cells. Recent investigations have focused on tight junction proteins, belonging to the claudin family (claudins-1 to -27 in humans) and the newly defined group of TAMP (three proteins: occludin, Marvel-D2, and tricellulin). Barriers and Channels Formed by Tight Junction Proteins I showcases work in this area clustered around three major themes: the molecular properties of tight junctions, for example, the role of the claudin family of proteins and the formation of ion and charge-selective channels; the regulation of tight junction and barrier functions via genetic mechanisms and scaffold protein mediation; and the functional role of the tight junction in various tissues, such as the skin, lungs, endothelia, and nervous system NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Book SynopsisThe book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of assessments and interventions applied in young children with, or at high risk, for developmental motor disorders. It provides an evidence-based practical guide for health professionals working in the field of early detection and early intervention (e.g., paediatricians and paediatric physiotherapists). Parts I & II provide an overview of the clinical picture of early detection and early intervention and the neurodevelopmental mechanisms occurring in early life are discussed, including vulnerability and plasticity. In Parts III & IV basic principles and features governing typical and atypical motor development are explained, covering not only motor development but also sensory and cognitive development. Part V summarises the methods available for assessments, including information on technical details of the tools and psychometric properties. Finally, Part VI discusses early intervention, including evidence on effectiveness, together with the application of equipment in young children with developmental motor disorders. Special attention is paid to the family and environmental adaptations.Table of ContentsAuthor Appointments vii Foreword ix Preface xi Video Captions xiii Part 1: Introduction 1 1 Introduction 3Mijna Hadders-Algra 2 Early Diagnosis and Early Intervention in the Clinic 9Leena Haataji Part 2: Developmental Neurology 23 3 Neurodevelopmental Mechanisms in Early Life 25Mijna Hadders-Algra Part 3: Typical Motor Development 39 4 Sensory, Language, Cognitive and Socio-Economic Development 41Hayley C Leonard 5 Motor Development During Foetal Life and Early Infancy 58Mijna Hadders-Algra 6 Motor Development Between 3 Months and 2 Years 70Mijna Hadders-Algra Part 4: Atypical Motor Development 97 7 Atypical Motor Development of the Foetus and Young Infant 89Mijna Hadders-Algra 8 Atypical Motor Development Between 3 Months and 2 Years 99Mijna Hadders-Algra and Lindsay Pennington Part 5: Diagnostics: Assessment of Neuromotor Conditions In Early Childhood 113 9 Psychometric Properties of Standardized Tests 115Barbara Sargent 10 Assessments in the Neonatal Period and Early Infancy 124Alicia Jane Spittle and Mijna Hadders-Algra 11 Assessment of Infants and Toddlers 144Annette Majnemer, Laurie Snider and Mijna Hadders-Algra Part 6: Early Intervention 171 12 Early Intervention: What About the Family? 173Peter Rosenbaum, Monika Novak-Pavlic, Schirin Akhbari Ziegler and Mijna Hadders-Algra 13 Early Intervention in the Neonatal Period 185Mijna Hadders-Algra 14 Early Intervention in the First 2 Years Post-Term 198Mijna Hadders-Algra 15 Environmental Adaptations 228Gunilla Thunberg, Roslyn Livingstone, Margaret Buchholz and Debra Field 16 Concluding Remarks 242Mijna Hadders-Algra Index 247

Relevant information on basic anatomy, embryology, immunology, and physiology is included to provide a better basis for understanding the development of disease and its diagnosis and treatment. Currently available biochemical tests and other specific diagnostic tools are also considered in detail. The various common thyroid disorders are then discussed in a series of individual chapters that focus on etiology, pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, and treatment. Numerous high-quality illustrations and concise fact boxes are included. The authors are all experts with wide experience in three disciplines and a long-standing interest in thyroid disease.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The authors provide a clinical handbook that covers a wide range of thyroid diseases seen in everyday practice. … This book is targeted at general practitioners, internists, and other clinicians who manage patients with thyroid dysfunction. … The large number of color pictures, graphs, and pathology pictures make this book unique and easy to read. … There are several benefits to this book. … Readers are likely to find useful clinical pearls without much searching. … it serves well as a handbook and reference.” (Rebecca L.
