Book SynopsisThe history of Britain and Ireland is incomprehensible without an understanding of the Christian faith that has shaped it. Introduced when the nations of these islands were still in their infancy, Christianity has provided the framework for their development from the beginning. Gerald Bray’s comprehensive overview demonstrates the remarkable creativity and resilience of Christianity in Britain and Ireland. Through the ages, it has adapted to the challenges of presenting the gospel of Christ to different generations in a variety of circumstances. As a result, it is at once a recognizable offshoot of the universal church and a world of its own. It has also profoundly affected the notable spread of Christianity worldwide in recent times. Although historians have done much to explain the details of how the church has evolved separately in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, a synthesis of the whole has rarely been attempted. Yet the story of one nation cannot be understood properly without involving the others; so, Gerald Bray sets individual narratives in an overarching framework. Accessible to a general readership, The History of Christianity in Britain and Ireland draws on current scholarship to serve as a reference work for students of both history and theology.

Inter-Varsity Press Why Trust the Bible?: Answers to Ten Tough

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis'You don't honestly believe all that stuff in the Bible!' Challenged by her friends, and later as a student by theological teachers, Amy Orr-Ewing was determined to leave no stone unturned in her eagerness to prove that the Bible was unique and wholly reliable. Her passion drove her to complete an in-depth study of the answers to ten of the most frequently raised objections she encountered, including: * Isn't it all a matter of interpretation? * Can we know anything about history? * Are the original manuscripts reliable? * What about the canon? * What about other holy books? * Isn't the Bible sexist? * What about all the wars? * Isn't the Bible out of date on sex? * How can I know? Sensitively yet convincingly, the author addresses the issues and the arguments, showing that we have every reason to trust the Bible today.Trade ReviewThis excellent book confronts ten difficult questions about the Bible with honesty and conviction. It will be invaluable to anyone wrestling with these questions, or trying to help others who wrestle with them. -- Rev Professor Alister McGrath * Author and Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford *Amy is one of the foremost British evangelists and apologists of our generation. -- Nicky Gumbel * Minister and Pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton, London, and developer of Alpha *In a sceptical age, where myths and assumptions about the Bible swirl ever around, there’s a vital need to demonstrate that there are very good reasons to trust it. In her wonderfully accessible book, Amy Orr-Ewing has taken some of the latest scholarship about the Bible and its origins and made it available for a wide audience — and as she does, shows where there are numerous reasons, whether one is a doubter or a disciple, to take the Bible seriously. -- Dr Andy Bannister * Speaker, author, Director, The Solas Centre for Public Christianity *Amy Orr-Ewing is among the most important Christian communicators in the English-speaking world, and in this new edition of Why Trust the Bible? she shows exactly why. Dr Orr-Ewing is simultaneously intelligent and entertaining, convincing and sympathetic to those who doubt the whole show. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I look forward to giving away copies to my sceptical friends. -- Dr John Dickson * Distinguished Fellow, Ridley College (Melbourne), Lecturer in Historical Jesus, University of Sydney *Amy does a great job laying out a case for the reliability of the Bible here. In a time where the validity of the Bible is a major question, this is a much-needed resource. -- Lisa Fields * Founder and President, Jude3 Project *I always think there are three steps to faith in Christ. 1. You have to get the information about him from the Bible. 2. You then have to make sure it's true. And 3. You have to act on it and follow him. In this book, Amy just does the most incredible job of helping us all with step 2. -- Rico Tice * Senior Minister for Evangelism, All Souls Church Langham Place, London & Christianity Explored *[Commenting on first edition, 2005] Brilliant! Tough questions deserve clear and convincing answers. This is state-of-the-art apologetics that needs no apology. Amy’s fascinating, wise and informative comments impressively counter much of the superficial and frequently unchallenged debunking of the Bible that we meet everywhere today.A must-read for every armchair critic, historian and philosopher. User-friendly and great fun too! -- Greg Haslam * former Pastor of Westminster Chapel, London *A profoundly helpful book... thoughtful, intelligent, wise answers. -- J.John * evangelist and author, The Philo Trust *Insightful and intellectual. We all have questions and it can be hard to figure out where to go for answers. In her book Why Trust the Bible? Dr Amy Orr-Ewing addresses some of the most common tensions surrounding Scripture, with grace and truth. Adding new insights and responses, Dr Amy approaches each issue with surgical-like wisdom and a stunning heart to see people come to know the true answer of life – Jesus. -- Louie Giglio * Pastor of Passion City Church, Founder of Passion Conferences, author of Not Forsaken *

Book SynopsisDo you long for a closer, deeper walk with God? Would you like to know more about what the Bible says about spiritual intimacy? We say we know about God's love in our heads, but has it really percolated through to our hearts? The Bible employs the metaphor of Christ, the Lover, and believers, his beloved. Yet this rich relationship potential is relatively unexplored in modern popular books, and we are the poorer for it. Using Song of Songs and other Bible sources, the author explores the dynamics of our relationship. We come to understand more fully what it is for Christ to love us and for us to love him. Contents Desire - You're the one I want Show me your face Jesus is not my boyfriend, but... Is the Song of Songs really about me and Jesus? Insecurity Delight Springtime Belonging Distance Christ finds us beautiful Christ gets crazy for love Finally, consummation Distant again Spiritual intimacy betrayed and lost through porn Porn-spoiled lives restored Reconciled Still beautiful to him Spirals of longing and love Conclusion: the power of spiritual marriage in the storms This portrayal of the living dynamics of a believer's relationship with Christ cannot fail to transform our devotional life profoundly.Trade ReviewA delightful, heart-warming and inspiring guide to deeper spiritual intimacy with God. It reorients our desires – whether met, half-met or unmet – to their true and ultimate fulfillment. But it’s so much more than an call to pursue Christ; it’s an invitation to feel his desire for us. The result is a real tonic for the soul. -- Tim Chester * Faculty member of Crosslands Training and author of You Can Change and Enjoying God *Throughout the centuries, generations of Christians have borne witness to the Song of Songs being the means by which they experience deepest intimacy with Christ, their heavenly bridegroom. This series of devotional reflections will help Christians today to share in that same passionate experience, to revel in Jesus's love, to know the joy of his delight in us, and to long desperately for his return when he will sweep us up into his eternal embrace. I really liked the book - both the idea and the execution, and I hope it will open up the Song of Songs to lots of people in a deeper way. -- Ros Clarke * Associate Director of Church Society, and writing a commentary on the Song of Songs *What a remarkable book! Julian Hardyman was once my student, but more recently he has, on several occasions, served as a wise pastor for me personally. I was surprised to find myself convinced by his argument that the Song of Songs can be read not only as a beautiful description of human romantic love, but also as a divinely-inspired guide that can draw believers into a closer personal relationship with Christ. It has certainly done that for me. -- Wayne Grudem * Distinguished Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary *Preaching and writing on the Song of Songs is always a courageous thing to do - especially when challenging interpretive assumptions that have become well established in recent years. We all owe Julian Hardyman a huge debt for having the courage to do just that in this brilliant book. Like the great Song of Songs itself, this book is at times unsettling and even shocking, yet full of insight and practical help. It is perhaps the most helpful thing I have ever read on how to cultivate a deep and satisfying intimacy with Christ. -- John Risbridger * Minister and Team Leader, Above Bar Church, Southampton *Julian Hardyman offers us here a brilliant explanation of the sometimes confusing Song of Songs. But there is more than just expertise in this book. It is a powerful and much-needed reminder to Christians that Christ desires us and wants us to respond to that desire. -- Dr Simon Gathercole * Professor of NT Studies, Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, Director of Studies in Theology, and Fellow of Fitzwilliam College *I am constantly challenged by our desire to know God better, to 'see his face' and experience him more. Jesus, Lover of My Soul is a timely reminder of the amazing truth that we don’t just desire him, but Christ desires us! As Julian explores the imagery of Christ, and his bride, the church, we are energised by the truth that 'we stand complete in him'. -- Nola Leach * CEO, CARE, UK *This book has renewed in me a fresh passion to know God more, and to delight in His favour. -- Lyndon Bowring * Chairman and Co-founder of CARE *A remarkable combination of intellect, imagination and devotion. Thoroughly contemporary, engaging with our culture as well as the biblical revelation. Often Julian allows us to go quite deeply into his own soul, and so reaches deeply into ours. -- Peter Lewis * Minister at Cornerstone Church, Nottingham, for many years *This book does many things. It makes the Song of Songs accessible. It takes the text seriously. It engages both with Puritans and contemporary culture. But what Jesus, Lover of My Soul does best of all is give us a grown-up view of a passionate and intimate relationship with Christ. As such, this is a rare and precious gift to the church – read it and you will know more of the passion that Christ feels for you. -- Steve Midgley * Senior Minister, Christ Church Cambridge and Executive Director Biblical Counselling UK *This is an extraordinary book. An extended analysis of the Song of Songs, it speaks into the very depths of our own desire for intimacy and love, but then lifts that desire into the spiritual heights that the Song reaches. The book is personal, honest and transparent, yet it is also scholarly, sharing nuggets from a host of other insightful authors in a way that speaks so relevantly into our culture today. The text focuses carefully on the Song itself, but draws on so much biblical literature that we soon realize that its central theme is everywhere, and inexhaustible. Please read this book and indulge yourself in intimacy; you will soon find you are bathing in the warmth and fullness of the love of God. -- Elaine Storkey * Member of the General Synod of Church of England, President of Tearfund, broadcaster and author *One of the most significant cultural drivers of our age is the search for intimacy and the hunger to eliminate alienation. We need an antidote to the misplaced enthronement of sex as the ultimate quest for intimacy. The Song of Songs is one of the ‘lost’ books of the Bible in the devotional life of Christians as well as the preaching of evangelical churches. Jesus Lover of my Soul was created on the anvil of sermons preached in a local church. Each chapter bears witness to what Karl Barth termed ‘the ‘unquenchable yearning’ in the Song of Songs. -- David Coffey OBE * Past President of the Baptist World Alliance *An absolute gem. A wonderful study on the Song of Songs. It will renew your mind and refresh your spirit. * Mike Pilavachi, pastor of Soul Survivor Watford *

  • I Am: The Answers to Life's Biggest Questions

Inter-Varsity Press I Am: The Answers to Life's Biggest Questions

Book SynopsisBold claims. Answers which many are searching for today. This is Jesus in his own words, using metaphors and pictures which are concrete, simple and profound. Meaning: what is the meaning of life? I am the bread of life. Enlightenment: where can I find light? I am the light of the world. Freedom: how can I be truly free? I am the door, Evil: isn't religion evil? I am the good shepherd. Destiny: is this life all there is? I am the resurrection. Reality: what is ultimate reality? I am the way. Value: how can I make my life count? I am the vine. Time: how can we escape being finite? 'I am.' Bold claims - and they are also true. The 'I am' sayings of Jesus are highly relevant. Jesus is uniquely qualified to meet our deepest needs and answer our biggest questions. Find out for yourself.Trade ReviewA great read - punchy, clear, and engaging - and easily accessible for anyone checking out the bold claims of the most influential man in all of history. -- Simon Guillebaud, MBE, Great Lakes OutreachMany people have all kinds of questions about the meaning and purpose of life, the daily struggle with suffering in their own existence, and when they look at the news, the continuing existence in our world of evil and injustice. My friend Marcus Nodder tries in this honest, concise and readable book to answer those questions by looking at the claims of Jesus Christ, about who he is and what he did 2000 years ago. Even if you are sceptical as to the relevance of Jesus to your life today, I invite you to have a go at reading the book and see what you think. Decide for yourself. * Jeremy Marshall, businessman and evangelist *Every human has questions at some point about the meaning and purpose of their life. This short book answers those questions. Marcus Nodder is a very engaging story teller. He uses a wide variety of illustrations and testimonies that connect well to where his readers are at. I strongly recommend you read this book if you are not a Christian, and by doing so, you will read some of the claims and promises that Jesus made about himself. Only Jesus can give you satisfying answers to the meaning and purpose of life. -- Jane Tooher * Director of the Priscilla and Aquila Centre, Diocese of Sydney, Australia *Apologist Francis Schaeffer once said, 'If I have only an hour with someone, I will spend the first 55 minutes asking questions and finding out what is troubling their heart and mind, and then in the last 5 minutes I will share something of the truth.' Those are very challenging words, especially to those who are preachers, broadcasters or authors. How can you have such dialogue when you are writing a book? This is the genius I found in I Am by Marcus Nodder. I felt like I was in conversation with Marcus. He seemed to preempt my thinking and answer the next question or objection I had, and when I needed to pause and process, he was patiently waiting for me to return. As an evangelist, I am constantly on the look-out for good books to read and give away to a not-yet-Christians. This is quite possibly the best I have ever come across. -- Mitch * Evangelist, Crown Jesus Ministries *This little book could literally change your life. The Bible is not just one of the greatest books ever written, head and shoulders above every other piece of literature, with John’s Gospel right at its heart, but the ‘I AM’ statements are right at the heart of John’s Gospel. So...how good and important is this book? -- Andy Hawthorne * CEO, The Message Trust, UK *By taking us to the words of Jesus, this outstanding and short book spells out the content and benefits of the Christian good news. It does so with compelling clarity. I will be buying several copies to give to friends - and encouraging those in our church to do the same. -- William Taylor * Rector of St Helen's Bishopsgate, London *What is Jesus all about, and what does faith in him offer? For those seriously engaging with the Christian faith, and keen to understand more about the message of the Bible, here is a book filled with vital notes of urgency and engaging real-life illustrations. This would be the perfect book to give to someone who has completed an evangelistic course and wants to know more, and it is particularly well suited to students. -- Andrew Hill * Executive Director of the Soldiers' and Airmen's Scripture Readers Association *Marcus Nodder has a wonderfully compelling formula: some pictures with which we've all been familiar since childhood - lights, doors, shepherds. He shows how Jesus used them to point to himself, and then Marcus reveals, with a staggering array of stimulating illustrations, why that is exactly what we need in terms of our longings for things like meaning, freedom, truth and hope in an increasingly bewildering world. -- Rico Tice * Senior Minister for Evangelism, All Souls Church Langham Place, London & Christianity Explored *

Book SynopsisIn 2020 Britain marked the 25th anniversary of Racial Justice Sunday. This movement was established at a time when the UK was having to face up to both overt and subversive forms of racism, epitomised by the tragic killing of black teenager, Stephen Lawrence, in Eltham in 1993. This murder, and other racist attacks, gave mainstream visibility to the struggle of many Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people to obtain full equality and justice. Race for Justice brings together a collection of voices on this vital issue from a wide variety of Christian denominations. Each contributor to this volume serves as a racial justice, equalities, diversity, or inclusion officer. Equipped with extensive frontline experience, they each give their perspective on the successes and failures of race relations in the church over the last quarter of a century, as well as addressing contemporary challenges and their hopes for the future.

Through each week of Lent, a different aspect of the Easter story is examined: repenting, changing, hoping, trusting, forgiving, loving and sacrificing. Within each week, the days are focused on what we need to do in order to share the story: listening, understanding, reflecting, living, telling, sharing and becoming. Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity. Suggestions for group study and group study questions are also included.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCan we transcend worry? How do we find contentment? Is it possible to stand firm when the world around us seems so uncertain? Can we still find hope in God's written word? Transcending Worry takes us on a journey of reflection through some verses from the book of Philippians 4 1-13. Familiar and much loved these wonderful verses written by St Paul to the Church in Philippi give us a lot to think and contemplate: "Do not be anxious about anything...... I have learnt to be content in all circumstances..... stand firm ........". How can these verses help us today? John Bloor, a licensed Reader and preacher in the Church of England, a Christian for over 50 years, a confessed worrier, writes having experienced a "light bulb" moment whilst listening to a talk in church on these particular verses. Inspired and written in a time of great anxiety and worry as Coronavirus swept throughout the world. John very much believed he was called by God to write and share these insights and thoughts with others. Taking several years to complete, consideration is given through personal stories, painful times and life experiences. We are transported to Paris; The Louvre Gallery - a Rembrandt painting, the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame Church to help us contemplate and provide thought provoking questions. The book includes contributions, stories and life experiences from Saju Muthalaly, Bishop of Loughborough and other friends and church family members that very much informed John's thinking and writing. We are called to serve our faithful and loving God. What does this mean? A closer look at the Rembrandt painting, The Supper at Emmaus, we are challenged to think and reflect on what we might bring to the table.

Book SynopsisSt Francis of Assisi, one of the most acclaimed and enduring of saints, is particularly significant when reflecting upon the COVID pandemic. Francis lived, and ministered, amid a leprosy pandemic. How he lived in relation to that pandemic makes him a source of insight to as well as a potential critic of contemporary responses to COVID. In turn, one can use COVID to question Francis. Did he exhibit a harmful form of religious devotion, perhaps fanaticism, by exposing himself and others to a lethal pathogen? This edited collection examines a highly visible and impactful religious figure with the intent of bringing him into conversation with one of the defining issues of the early 21st Century.Trade Review"These timely essays help us, who strive to live by Franciscan values, do more than ponder our role in a world of easy sickness. Book SynopsisThis book discusses Griffith Jones’s High Church ministry and theology, which developed into mass evangelism in Wales. It considers Jones’s background, his life as a parson, preaching in Welsh and educational interests, as well as his determination to remain within the Church of England. Bishop George Bull’s concerns about evangelism, influence of the Prayer Book and Continental Pietism, ‘conversionism’, and the tendency to separatism are also discussed. Jones may not have been an original thinker, but he was an untiring communicator and organiser. There are sections on Jones’s catechising, ‘baptismal covenant’, and moderate Calvinism which influenced later Welsh Calvinistic Methodism. Jones’s advocacy of the Welsh language, especially with English donors to his schools, his links with the SPCK, and collaboration with gentry – especially Sir John Philipps and Bridget Bevan – show the effectiveness with which he participated in the growing evangelical movement in Wales.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 Griffith Jones in his Setting Chapter 2 Sir John Philipps, the SPCK and a New View of Mission Chapter 3 Bishop George Bull as Griffith Jones’s Mentor Chapter 4 Prayer-Book Roots of Griffith Jones’s Preaching Chapter 5 The Theology of Griffith Jones’s Preaching Chapter 6 Griffith Jones’s Moralism and Theology Chapter 7 Catechizing, Baptism, and the Trend Towards Evangelicalism Chapter 8 Griffith Jones’s Ministry and the Language Chapter 9 Griffith Jones’s Legacy to the Church of England in Wales Conclusion Bibliography

  • Faith Always Works: The Death of a Believer

Grosvenor House Publishing Ltd Faith Always Works: The Death of a Believer

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn early 2016 I found myself laying in a hospital bed at the Royal Marsden in Fulham, diagnosed with terminal cancer, I decided to write about my faith in Christ; what it is and how it has been shaped and tested by a life that is lived out in the unpredictability of a world that can be so harsh and cruel. My starting point is to examine what sin is and what it does, paving the way for me to explain the necessity of salvation and what it does. I have made this my starting point because this is where faith begins. The fundamental message of the book is to acknowledge that, as a Christian, life can be filled with extreme pain, confusion and disillusionment and begs for meaningful answers to some very serious questions. The book takes an honest look at faith under the examination of someone who has experienced the safety of Christianity from childhood, yet along the way became one of the biggest sceptics of the Christianity that I saw around me. It was a scepticism that led me to the point of considering abandoning whatever faith I thought I had. This is a dilemma that I know a lot of Christians are tempted by and I hope that this book will give to them the encouragement, support and determination to press on. In this matter I attempt to examine what genuine faith is and what it is not, what it will do and what it will not do. I seek to highlight that the person with genuine faith must expect and be prepared for their faith to be tried and tested by God Himself and what His purpose in doing so is. The conclusion that the book as a whole alludes to, is that whilst there are times when faith does not seem to work, the faithfulness of what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ determines that faith always works.

Christian Focus Publications Ltd The Water that Divides: Two views on Baptism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThings that divide Christians act as a poor witness to the world. On such major schism is that of Baptism. However if we can't agree, the next best witness to the world is the manner of how we disagree. The two views explored here, paedo (or infant) baptism and adult (or believer's) baptism are often so entrenched that discussions can be based around prejudice rather than understanding. This classic book aims to eradicate the former and promote the latter. Do you know why Anglicans, Presbyterians and Methodists baptise babies? Do you know why Baptists find it impossible to understand why they do it? Do you know why most Baptists find it difficult to allow Paedobaptists to take communion or become church members? We owe it to the future health of the church, and its witness, to work out our differences in love before the world. This book looks at the biblical arguments for both views on baptism, show how these have been practised in church history and the place that baptism has in the church today. This book is based on the 1998 extended version of the 1977 classic.Donald Bridge and David Phypers approach this book from two different directions - respectively that of Baptist and Anglican. The common approach they bring is their respect of the others position as regards fidelity to scripture and faith.Trade Review"This revised and updated version (of The Water that Divides) is a model of the informed, respectful and irenic dialogue of which Evangelicalism stands in continual need. The final chapter, which sensitively sets baptismal practice within today's context, is a particularly valuable survey, whatever our stance on the cluster of issues which gather under the canopy of 'post-modernism'. This is an invaluable text for all involved, at every level, with Christian initiation and local church membership." -- Bruce Milne (Author and Conference Speaker)This volume would go some way to help people rethink what are true Gospel vitals and what are secondary, and hence non-divisive, issues. I commend this book to get Christians thinking and seeking a mutual way forward - we cannot afford the luxury of glasshouses, whichever side of the debate we stand. -- Rev J. F. Dunn

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis There are commentaries and there are books on preaching - but very few books that combine elements of both to enable the preacher or Bible teacher to prepare a series on specific sections of Scripture. This series gives the Bible teacher suitable tools to understand the context of Biblical books; doctrinal themes; the methods of interpretation; the key interpretation points and how to communicate that message for the hearer.Whilst very useful for preachers, this book is also aimed at equipping small group study leaders, youth workers and other Bible teachers. The books are purposefully practical. Section One contains 'navigation' material to enable you to access the text of Romans. Section 2 works systematically through a suggested preaching or Bible study series. Preaching outlines and Bible study questions are included for each passage.Trade ReviewThe Teaching series is a great resource for Bible study leaders and pastors, indeed for any Christian who wants to understand their Bible better. -- Mark Dever (Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church and President, 9Marks.org, Washington, DC)The task of moving from the text of Scripture to clear and faithful exposition is challenging. This series of excellent guides aims to help the Bible teacher to observe what is there in the text, and prepare to convey its significance to contemporary hearers. In this way these volumes often do more than the weightier technical commentaries. It is like having the guidance of an experienced coach in the wonderful work of rightly handling the word of truth. -- John Woodhouse (Retired Principal and Lecturer in Doctrine and Old Testament, Moore College, Sydney, Australia)Personally, I found the structure of each chapter extremely helpful. After analysing and explaining the meaning of the text, the author moves from text to teaching. In this section the basic theme and aim are clarified and pointers to application made. This is perhaps what lifts these volumes beyond the limits of a normal commentary. It is also what Bible teachers and study leaders will find most attractive about them. Applying the ancient text to the modern listener isn't always an easy thing to do. Under pressure to seem practical and relevant, preachers are often tempted to the sin of 'false application' by which the instructions they give are forced onto, rather than derived out of, the text. -- Evangelicals NowNorth India desperately needs men and women who will preach and teach the Bible faithfully and PT's Teaching series is of great value in encouraging them to do just that. -- Isaac Shaw (Executive Director, Delhi Bible Institute, New Delhi, India)The need of the hour is Bible knowledge. When knowledge fails, faith fails, and we are shaped instead by cultural forces alien to God. This teaching series, written by skilled and trustworthy students of God's word, helps us to understand the Bible, believe it and obey it. I commend it to all Bible readers, but especially those whose task it is to teach the inspired word of God. -- Peter Jensen (Retired Archbishop of Sydney, Sydney, Australia)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisActs is an exciting story of church growth despite inner problems and outward conflict. The Book of Acts describes the spread of the gospel throughout the known world of the first century and the establishment of Christian churches in many different places. As the gospel entered new places, its preachers often faced opposition from followers of other religions, and sometimes this opposition extended to include political persecution. Nevertheless, within a generation the gospel had spread from Jerusalem to Rome and beyond. While Luke, the writer of Acts was a historian, Acts is not merely historical but also provide principles and lessons for contemporary churches to imitate as they continue to spread the apostolic gospel today.Trade ReviewAs a pastor I initially turned to Bruce Milne's commentary on Acts for help with a difficult passage that I planned to preach on. I received a lot more than I bargained for. Not only were my textual questions answers but my mind was enriched. In addition I found nourishment for my own soul. Later in the day when dealing with a difficult counselling situation I was able to pass on some of the biblical wisdom I had gained from Bruce Milne. I have 30 commentaries on Acts on my study shelves. Some have become good friends over the years but I have found Milne's work to be the most helpful. It comes from a man who is a pastor-scholar with a warm heart for Christ and a deep love for his church. -- C. John Steer, Senior Pastor, Autumn Ridge Church, Rochester, MNThis year I decided to read Acts with your help, making my way through your commentary. My dear brother! What a gift you have given to the church! And to me! Your work is truly anointed by the Spirit Who inspired the Acts. The Lord has given you such keen insight and then the ability to articulately, winsomely, powerfully open the text for us. As you know, I have read widely. But no one makes sense of the "sermon" by Stephen the way you do. No one keeps the "big picture" - the spreading of the Word of God - before us the way you do. -- Darrell Johnson, Senior Minister, First Baptist, VancouverI was greatly blessed and challenged by your commentary. It was a great encouragement to read such a solid, biblically based commentary. Right up to the Appendices yoru passion for Mission because of your love for the Lord was a great stimulus to me. • The Story of the Scottish Reformation

Christian Focus Publications Ltd The Story of the Scottish Reformation

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Reformation had a radical effect on Scotland not just spiritually but also politically and socially. Given its spiritual decadence in the lead up to this, it was in much need of reformation. A contributor to that success was the old Celtic Church who revered the Bible as the supreme standard and hence placed an emphasis on the preaching of the Word. Renwick considers the character and the experiences of the leader of the Scottish Reformation John Knox. Secularly it was to have an influence on the Scottish Parliament e.g. the importance of education for all as a result of the principles they had built. It also considers the protagonists of the reformation such as the nobles and the place of Mary of Lorraine the Queen Mother and Queen Mary. As well as looking at the Scottish Reformation it gives its historical context not forgetting what was happening elsewhere. It is clear that for those who were involved in the Scottish Reformation it was costly but they considered it important to defend the reformed faith. An opportunity to read of lives that were transformed as they became convicted of the gospel truth which in turn led them to serve God.Trade Review"I am delighted to see this classic study of the Scottish Reformation by Prof. Renwick come back into print...It is written with the two qualities Calvin desired for his own literary productions: clarity and brevity" -- Douglas F. Kelly (Professor of Theology Emeritus, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina)"Its depth of research, extent of coverage and clarity of presentation, all combine to make Renwick's study one of the finest and most eminently readable introductions available on this most exciting period in Scotland's history." -- Tom Lennie"Increasingly our people are interested in their roots, whether geneaological or spiritual. Here in this little book A. M. Renwick provides us with a way to trace where we've come in such a way to help us know where the church needs to go. Get out your shovel and dig into the history of the Scottish Reformation!" -- Sean Michael Lucas"A. M. Renwick's small book on the Scottish Reformation is the best introduction to the period. Book SynopsisFirst published in 1737 this book holds a special place among the tremendous amount of Puritan literature that was produced during that time. Thomas Boston was renowned for his clearly understood English and the manner in which he maintained that clarity while conveying messages of great depth. The Crook in the Lot is introduced to us by J. I. Packer. In an extensive prologue he shows how Boston’s advice remains deeply relevant today. Boston was not preaching merely from his theological understanding, he was speaking from direct personal experience. Boston had real “thorns” to deal with himself, ranging from his wife’s paralyzing depression to his own experiences living for years with what were probably kidney stones. He brings his own unique combination of wonderfully profound and yet immensely practical advice to bear to give us a work of lasting impact.Trade Review"..The pure Biblical wisdom of The Crook in the Lot is badly need by many of us, and so I am delighted that is being made available in this handy form." -- J. Packer gives us profiles of John Flavel, Thomas Boston, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry, Henry Scougal, John Owen and Stephen Charnock and two closer portraits of William Perkins and Richard Baxter. The writings of the Puritans continue to profoundly reward readers and here J. I. Packer brings them alive in an inspiring way to encourage a new generation to experience their delights.Trade Review"Like many, I first met the Puritans through the writings of Dr Packer and thus owe him a debt of gratitude. In this volume he has once again excelled: here are thoughtful introductions to some key Puritan thinkers and their works, along with a Puritan manifesto for today's pastors. This is vintage Packer. In an age of trendy fluff, here is solid food for the church and for the soul." -- Carl R. Trueman (Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College, Pennsylvania)"With characteristic ease of style, clarity of thought, and theological insight, Dr Packer introduces us to the life and thought of seven of the all-time masters of what one of them called 'the life of God in the soul of man.' Puritan Guides to Glory is a treat for anyone with healthy spiritual taste buds." -- Sinclair B. Ferguson (Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi)"When I've been asked to recommend a book on the Puritans, J. I. Packer's A Quest for Godliness typically came first to mind. With the release of Puritan Portraits, a fresh and spiritually invigorating survey of several key Puritan pastors and theologians, I can now point to a second volume that is must reading. "Puritan Christianity," says Packer, "was serious business." So, too, must ours be, and there is simply no better tour guide for exploring Puritan faith and spirituality than J. I. Packer. Highly recommended!" -- Sam Storms (Lead Pastor, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)J.I. Packer has a skill unparalleled in today's church: he brings the Puritans back to life and makes them sing, as the biographical expositions in this book attest. Indeed, Jim Packer is a Puritan of the most winsome, persuasive, and catholic sort. When young ministers ask me what they should study to strengthen their spiritual life, I often say, 'Read the Puritans with Packer!' That is good counsel for all Christians. -- Timothy George (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)"The best way to meet great men is through a personal introduction by someone who knows them well. That's precisely what J. I. Packer does in this book, introducing us to several Puritan-minded men of the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. But this is more than biography. As Packer does so well, in this book the Puritans become mirrors in which we see heavenly truths about the gospel, evangelism, spiritual growth, and suffering. I thank God for the gathering of this previously scattered material into one volume, and anticipate that it will bless many." -- Joel R. Beeke (Chancellor, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan)"Over the years, J. I. Packer has convinced many of us that, if we would be more than spiritual pygmies, we need to spend time with the Puritans. Now, in this elegant and engaging book, he has given us the most accessible and inspiring way in to them. What does it tell us about the sacrifice of Christ and how does this emphasis on his blood help us in understanding the finished work of Christ on the cross? Alan Stibbs dispels any misconceptions that people may have about Jesus’ blood and its work by examining the Old and New Testament. The author gives us the Biblical understanding of the meaning of the blood which equates to the purposeful and effective laying down of a life. We will find that indeed His Blood Works!Trade Review"On the one hand, Stibbs' essay is a theological jewel, with its close and lucid reading of biblical material. On the other hand, it is a pastoral masterpiece, because the reader loves Christ more at the end of it. I think that would greatly please Alan Stibbs, and it is why this 'old' essay is so worth reading." -- Michael Ovey ((1958-2017) Principal, Oak Hill Theological College, London)"Alan Stibbs has an irresistible argument here, and it is one that is essential for Christian assurance. However, it has also asserted the complementarity of 'normal' male and female physiology. 'Sex and Uncertainty in the Body of Christ' offers the first systematic theology of the intersexed body. The book analyses the theological implications of physical intersex conditions and their medical treatment. The medical assumption of what constitutes male and female bodies is shown to raise essential questions about the meaning of incarnation and bodiliness. The book argues for a theology that speaks to stigmatized and marginal bodies, examining the impact of such a theology on sex, marriage, sexuality, perfection, healing, and the resurrected body.Trade Review"Brings to light the mass confusion – uncertainty – surrounding intersex conditions in both medical circles and theological circles. The truth of human goodness can get hidden under the fear that we cannot live up to its demands, or it can get buried under faults or failures, or it can just get forgotten. In this thoughtful and important book, the Archbishop (with his daughter, Mpho Tutu) shows how we can find our way back to goodness by changing our attitudes, by practising forgiveness, and by prayer. Then we will begin to see the goodness and beauty of others... If our view changes, this in turn alters the way we act. And how we act towards each other affects not only ourselves but everything in our world - for the better.Trade ReviewEven with the incredible trauma and cruelty Archbishop Tutu endured in South Africa during apartheid and the many atrocities he has witnessed in his life, he still radiates love and happiness. Book SynopsisThe key to the book is a set of interviews with people who fall broadly into the Christian Atheist category; some are more agnostic and less sceptical than others, but what they have in common is the rejection of traditional belief in God, counterbalanced by an admiration for the aesthetic genius of Christianity (leading to a sense of deeper value), the Christian moral compass, and in some cases the community aspect of Christian life. As one of his interviewees points out, you can?t have Christian atheism without mainstream, traditional Christianity, so Brian Mountford sets their comments within a broader discussion of the issues: God, aesthetics, orthodoxy, doubt and belief, ethics and communal values. His purpose is threefold: to validate and affirm the Christian atheist position within the broad spectrum of Christianity to say to the Church, you ignore this phenomenon at your peril to show that the distinction between atheist and religious adherent is rarely black and white, and that the ground between the two is a fertile source of meaning and valueTrade ReviewIn this fascinating and thoughtful book, Brian Mountford explores the borderland where Christians and atheists gaze at each other with expressions ranging from the hostile and scornful to the friendly and sympathetic. In some ways it is the most interesting place in contemporary religion. Mountford has an extensive knowledge of this borderland, and in the interviews and reflections in this book he explores it in the company of some eloquent and thoughtful contemporaries. Book SynopsisSinging a new song is not an optional extra, but a faithful response to a divine command. This command is the opening phrase of Psalms 96 and 98. And, St John the Divine says, this is what the saints in heaven are doing all the time. But, on earth, things are not so easy. Sometimes it's because the latest new song in the old hymnbook is two centuries old. Or the congregation has been told by some sadist that it doesn't sing well'. Or sometimes the organist can only play what s/he hears on the radio. Or the guitarist can do anything, as long as it's only three major chords. However, even in such dire straits, the divine command has to be obeyed. So what if we kept familiar tunes hymn tunes or folk tunes and set words to them in 21st-century idioms? What if we gave some ancient psalms a makeover, replaced threadbare wedding and funeral songs or dealt with the things that people actually talk about when they're not in church? And what if most of the suggested tunes were so well known that even if musicians took the huff people could still sing the verses on their own? What if you looked under the covers of this book and began to upset the quiet of the place in which you are presently standing by beginning to hum? This book amounts to a modest proposal from the Wild Goose Resource Group on how to make the most of minimal congregational song resources in an accessible and resilient way.

Book Synopsis'The Lord's Prayer' stands at the heart of Christianity. Over the past two millennia, it has been spoken millions of times by millions of people around the world. Rudolf Steiner affirms the power of this prayer, given by Jesus Christ himself, and encourages us to begin to understand it at deeper levels. Such an understanding, he explains, is now necessary for humanity's further development. In the four lectures he gave on this subject, collected here under one cover, Rudolf Steiner penetrates the esoteric meanings of the Lord's Prayer, relating its seven petitions to the seven spiritual and physical bodies of the human being. He also discusses the difference between prayer and meditation, and shows how true prayer is selfless in nature. This volume features an introduction by Judith von Halle, whose work is valued for her experiential knowledge of the Lord's Prayer and the events of Christ's life.
