Book Synopsis This book explores the technological innovations and management practices of evangelical Christian religions. Beginning from the late 19th century, the author examines the evangelical church''s increasing appropriation of business practices from the secular world as solutions to organizational problems. He notes especially the importance of the church growth movement and the formation of church networks. Particular attention is paid to the history of evangelical uses of computer technology, including connections the Christian Right has made within Silicon Valley. Most significantly, this book offers one of the first academic explorations of the use of cybernetics, systems theory and complexity theory by evangelical leaders and management theorists.Trade ReviewThis book's unique synthesis of the fields of business management, cybernetics, systems theory, information theory, and complexity theory is startling, and represents—at least in the mind of this reader—a significant provocation that challenges scholars to reassess our understanding of the mutations of American Christianity during the twentieth century."—Michael McVicar, Associate Professor of Religion, Florida State UniversityTable of Contents Table of Contents Acknowledgments viii Preface 1 Acronyms 6 Introduction 8 1. The Origins of Evangelical Management Culture 25 2. The Church Growth Movement and the Birth of Modern Metricspirituality 95 3. Cybernetics, Computers and Christ: How Systems Theory Helped Found the Modern Religious Right 115 4. Networked Churches and the Rise of Church Toyota 194 5. The Christian Right's Technological Infrastructure 239 6. The Evangelical Web 274 Conclusion: Managing the Future 296 Glossary 311 Chapter Notes 319 Works Cited 325 Index 351

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCatholicism entails a challenge. The word catholic means "universal." Yet, that universality is expressed through different rites, languages, jurisdictions, and states of life that are unique and concrete. Today Catholicism''s universality faces a still further challenge. It must share the world not only with Protestants of various kinds, but also with adherents of other faiths (and none). In the decades since Vatican II and the promulgation of Nostra Aetate, the question of religious difference has itself become more concrete. Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindus live among and alongside Protestants and Catholics in neighborhoods across the globe. How does this practical reality square with Catholicism''s understanding of itself and its neighbors? In Embracing Our Time, university chaplain Lynn Cooper provides practical resources for interfaith engagement rooted in a Catholic perspective. Drawing on Trinitarian, sacramental, and feminist theologies, Cooper shows that interreligious collaboration is a concrete expression of the interdependence at the heart of Catholic faith. Embracing Our Time centers the lived experiences of Catholics and employs theological reflection, composite storytelling, and spiritual provocations to guide readers on an inner journey, inviting them to a deep reading of their lives and communities. Cooper empowers lay folks to be conscientious interfaith leaders within their communities and congregations, not because they are experts in their tradition, but because the Christian call to friendship across and within difference is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus.

Book SynopsisThe benefits of the digital age are huge. Our lives have been transformed, both in the developed and the undeveloped world. However, this transformation has its dark side. The same powerful technologies have enabled cultural or religious grooming to flourish, unmoderated social ‘influencing’ to have free reign, fake information to spread, and sophisticated hackers to create destabilizing international mayhem. What place does the Church have in all this? How does it respond? What about the master philosophers of the neo-Platonic age, whose wisdom, borne of the great philosopher himself, was formed through the emerging doctrines of the early Christian church? The excellent and thought-provoking essays gathered here provide answers to these questions and more.

  • How to Hear God: A Simple Guide for Normal People

John Murray Press How to Hear God: A Simple Guide for Normal People

Book SynopsisNothing could possibly matter more than learning to discern the authentic voice of God, but few things in life are more susceptible to delusion and deception. When life falls apart and we need God's comfort; in moments of cultural turmoil when we need God's clarity; facing formidable decisions when we need God's guidance; desiring a deeper faith when we need God to say something, anything, to turn the monologue we call prayer into a genuine conversation. Having addressed God's silence in God on Mute, and then How to Pray in his previous bestseller, Pete Greig is back to bring wisdom and guidance to one of the most pressing and perplexing aspects of universal Christian experience - How to Hear God. Exploring the story of Christ's playful, poignant conversation on the road to Emmaus, Pete draws deeply from the insights of a wide range of Christian traditions. He weaves together the evangelical emphasis upon hearing God in the Bible, and the charismatic commitment to hearing God in the prophetic, with the contemplative understanding of God's 'still, small voice' within.Trade ReviewThis is not just a book written in a charming style, but perhaps in the end a book that will help many change their lives and adjust themselves to hearing that "still small voice" of which the Bible speaks. * The Irish Catholic *'Greig's main readership is likely to be young adults in the Charismatic Evangelical wing of the Church. This book will do a solid job helping them listen for the voice of God in everyday life, by way of a broad range of spiritual traditions, while remaining alert to the loopier and more manipulative claims of some would-be channellers of the Almighty.' * Church Times *

Yet the traditional approaches of apologetics are often outmoded in an age of profound disenchantment and distraction, unable to meet this pressing need. This winsome apologetics book for a new generation makes the case that Christianity offers a compelling explanatory framework for making sense of our world. Pastor and writer Gavin Ortlund believes it is essential to appeal not only to the mind but also to the heart and the imagination as we articulate the beauty of the gospel. Why God Makes Sense in a World That Doesn't reimagines four classical theistic arguments--cosmological, teleological, moral, and Christological--making a cumulative case for God as the best framework for understanding the storied nature of reality. The book suggests that Christian theism can explain such things as the elegance of math, the beauty of music, and the value of love. It is suitable for use in classes yet accessibly written, making it a perfect resource for churches and small groups.Table of ContentsContentsPrefaceIntroduction: Beauty, Story, and Probability in the Question of God1. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is the best framework for reading the Bible? The question of how to relate the Old and New Testaments is as old as the Bible itself. While most Protestants are unified on the foundations, there are major disagreements on particular issues. Who should be baptized? Is the Christian obligated to obey the Law of Moses? Does the church supplant Israel? Who are the proper recipients of God's promises to Israel? In Discontinuity to Continuity, Benjamin Merkle brings light to the debates between dispensational and covenantal theological systems. Merkle identifies how Christians have attempted to relate the Testaments, placing viewpoints along a spectrum of discontinuity to continuity. Each system's concerns are sympathetically summarized and critically evaluated. Through his careful exposition of these frameworks, Merkle helps the reader understand the key issues in the debate. Providing more light than heat, Merkle's book will help all readers better appreciate other perspectives and articulate their own.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe renowned Christian preacher and New York Times bestselling author of An Altar in the World recounts her moving discoveries of finding the sacred in unexpected places while teaching world religions to undergraduates in Baptist-saturated rural Georgia, revealing how God delights in confounding our expectations. Christians are taught that God is everywhere--a tenet that is central to Barbara Brown Taylor's life and faith. In Holy Envy, she continues her spiritual journey, contemplating the myriad ways she encountered God while exploring other faiths with her students in the classroom, and on field trips to diverse places of worship. Both she and her students ponder how the knowledge and insights they have gained raise important questions about belief, and explore how different practices relate to their own faith. Inspired by this intellectual and spiritual quest, Barbara turns once again to the Bible for guidance, to see what secrets lay buried there. Throughout Holy Envy, Barbara weaves together stories from her classroom with reflections on how her own spiritual journey has been challenged and renewed by connecting with people of other traditions--and by meeting God in them. At the heart of her odyssey is her trust that it is God who pushes her beyond her comfortable boundaries and calls us to "disown" our privatised versions of the divine--a change that ultimately deepens her relationship with both the world and with God, and ours.Trade Review'Few souls are as synched to the world’s mysteries as Barbara Brown Taylor.' -- TIME magazine'Barbara Brown Taylor.

Book SynopsisThe Lost Abbey of Eynsham will be of interest not just to local historians but to those with an interest in the development of monasticism and medieval art and architecture, particularly the Romanesque. Eynsham was one of the few religious foundations in England in continuous use from the late Saxon period to the Dissolution. Its first Benedictine Abbot was the internationally renowned scholar and teacher, Aelfric, and it was frequently visited by medieval kings given its close proximity to the royal hunting lodge of Woodstock. Hugh of Avalon, later canonised, was appointed Bishop of Lincoln at a royal council at Eynsham in 1186. Shortly afterwards the abbey achieved fame with the Vision of the Monk of Eynsham which is said to have influenced Dante. Its reputation was further enhanced when Eynsham acquired an important relic, the arm of St Andrew in 1240. In the later Middle Ages, the abbey went into decline and was beset by scandal. It surrendered to the Crown in 1538 and the huge structure was gradually demolished and pillaged for its building materials. Now, nothing remains in situ above ground. This book aims to rescue this important abbey from obscurity by summarising its history and examining the material remains of Eynsham Abbey, most of which have never been published before.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book Synopsis The escalating growth of our technological knowledge in the last century has been nothing short of breathtaking – but has it rendered us wiser? Or godlier? We have lost something priceless, and seem to be trying to replace it with more and more ‘information’. We need wisdom! Communications technology leaves us no rest to work things out: mostly we just react, and worry, and fail – and react again. We make business decisions; ethical decisions; relationship decisions; against a continuously moving landscape that doesn’t allow them to be satisfying… consistent… dependable. To cope we must have wisdom! There is no better starting point than the Book of Proverbs. Its purpose is to impart wisdom to those who want it. From its pages God promises to set us on ‘The path of life’ (Prov. 15:24). ‘You don’t understand! I don’t have time! ‘You do…because, after years of painstaking study, John Kitchen has produced a work that is authoritative, comprehensive and insightful. He examines the chronology, authorship, composition, structure and context of Proverbs and does the hard work of providing cross–references alerting the reader to rich veins running beneath the surface of Proverbs and other Biblical books. You want wisdom to help run your life? Think you are running out of time? Then this is a priceless, timeless book that will reward your investment as you seek to gain wisdom, rather than knowledge. Trade ReviewJohn Kitchen readably reflects the fruits of his precise and insightful teacher’s mind and his down–to–earth and caring pastor’s heart. Kitchen’s volume is that rare and beautiful combination: in equal––and very generous––portions, an intellectual feast for the curious mind and a spiritual feast for the needy soul! -- Dr. A. Boyd Luter, Adjunct Professor, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (Director of Biblical and Theological Studies, The King’s University, Texas)Committed to the full integrity and authority of the Bible as the written Word of God, to careful exegesis of the text, and to practical application of the truths of biblical wisdom to everyday life. -- Eugene H. Merrill, Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas (Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas)Up to now my best helps on Proverbs have been Bridges, Alden and Ross. Now I must add John Kitchen’s choice and compendious study in the Mentor Commentary Series. He is clear and probing on the text and always practical. His Appendix on wisdom vs folly is powerful and his Thematic Index of Proverbs opens up the only real preaching possibility for expositors beyond chapter nine of the book. Strings of pearls cannot be taught or preached verse by verse. This is a solid and substantial piece of work, which will deservedly take its place as one of the finest contemporary treatments available. -- Dr. David L. Larsen, Professor Emeritus of Preaching, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Professor Emeritus of Preaching, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)"In this commentary on Proverbs, John Kitchen combines careful attention to the text with a warm pastoral concern for his readers. He is familiar with the scholarly discussions on the book, but he avoids technical jargon as he interprets Proverbs for the life setting of the twenty-first century. His lucid exposition expertly focuses on two questions that are too often neglected: How does the message of Proverbs connect with other biblical passages? And, how does this ancient book speak in specific terms to life today? This book will prove helpful for laypeople, students, and scholars alike." -- Daniel J Estes, Dean of the Biblical & Theological Studies Department, Cedarville University, Cedarville, Ohio"Dr. John Kitchen's commentary represents a good combination of scholarly research and practical godly admonition. It provides both the experienced biblical scholar and the beginning Bible student a very helpful resource for the study of Proverbs." -- Gennady Pshenichny, Lecturer in the Old Testament, Former President, Kuban Evangelical Christian University, Krasnodar, Russia

Book SynopsisIntroduced by Russell Moore. How do we respond to the sheer wonder of the incarnation of God’s Son? Mary responded to the announcement of the birth of the Saviour with a song of praise. Her words were deep and with feeling – truly an experience which had affected her inner being. Yes, she was confused at first but she was willing to submit to God. She praises God for His character and for keeping His promises even when circumstances seemed to contradict that with the long wait over centuries for the Messiah. In this delightful book, co–published with Bryntirion Press, Martyn Lloyd–Jones meditates on Mary’s Song of Praise and applies it to our lives. He looks at our response to God and how God deals with us. We find that the new birth is all of God and nothing of ourselves.Trade Review"If we will listen to her, and sing with her, we can grow to see the offspring of the woman in all his might and all his fragility, in his justice and in his mercy. This book will drive you to that Virgin's Song-and beyond it, to the gospel, in ways you don't expect by walking you through the tension between Bethlehem and Armageddon. In the end, I decided not to take a break from Revelation for Christmas. And it was the Magnificat that changed my mind, for many of the reasons the great Lloyd-Jones lays out with such clarity in this book. The Mother of our Lord set the tone when she sang of God's mercy to his people, of his faithfulness to his covenant promises." -- Russell D. Moore (President, The Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission)

Book SynopsisGenesis provides us with a foundation for correctly understanding the world. Within Genesis, the character and the role of human beings within the world God has created is revealed. In reading Genesis we find on every occasion, in his dealings with mankind, God steps in by his grace and demonstrates that he is in control.Trade Review"The meaning of creation (and/or evolution) has taken its place at the front of the intellectual/cultural stage for over a century and a half, and shows no sign of moving from the center of discussion and debate. Secularists and Christians - both liberal and conservative - instinctively understand the high significance of the issue, and hence, the intensity of the continuing debate. Whether God is real and Scripture is true are both tied up in the foundational text of the Bible: Genesis chapters one to three. Richard Belcher's Genesis is a clearly written and judiciously researched guide to the entire question of the meaning of the book of Genesis (not just to its first three chapters, pivotal though these are)." -- Douglas F. Kelly (Professor of Theology Emeritus, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina)"Richard Belcher's commentary focuses on the big picture of Genesis, tracing God's story of redemption through the biblical narrative. His careful exposition shows how Genesis reveals God's intentions for his creation and his unstoppable purpose to bless his people and redeem them out of slavery, bringing good out of evil. God's people can live with confidence that God will be faithful to his promises to redeem and restore the broken and the suffering. He is able to take what people mean for evil and turn it into good. This commentary deserves a wide appreciation, as it will help pastors, leaders, and Christians see how Genesis proclaims the deepest message of the Bible: the grace of God for sinners and those who suffer." -- Justin S. Holcomb (Adjunct Professor of Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando, Florida)"Richard Belcher walks us through the familiar pages of Genesis in ways that go beyond what we often find in commentaries...This commentary will serve pastors well as they preach and teach. It will serve lay people well as they seek to understand the implications of Genesis for their lives." -- Richard Pratt (President, Third Millennium Ministries, Orlando, Florida)It is not often that the Christian community is provided a commentary which is both scholarly and practical. Richard Belcher's commentary on Genesis is rigorously faithful to the content of the book, thoughtfully responsive to the issues of the day and easily as well as enjoyably navigated by any and all who have the privilege of opening its pages. It is my privilege to commend it to you without reservation. -- Harry L. Reeder III ((1948 – 2023) Senior Pastor, Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama)"It is hard to think that more material was ever packed into a brief compass, or with greater clarity, helpfulness and ease of reading than Dr. Belcher has managed in this commentary. The words 'thoroughness', 'fairness' and 'lucidity' spring to mind to describe the whole work. Indeed, I cannot think of an important 'stone left unturned'! The treatment, for example, of the creation narrative ranks among the fullest and fairest I have ever read, but, without exaggeration every page has its quota of good things, problems solved, and truths illuminated. In a word, I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and warmly commend it." -- Alec Motyer ((1924–2016) Well known Bible expositor and commentary writer)

Book SynopsisAt Passiontide 2004, Judith von Halle received the stigmata - the duplication on her body of the wounds of Christ. Following a period of careful consideration, she eventually decided to share this intimate occurrence with a small group in Berlin in Michaelmas of that year. The phenomenon of the stigmata is usually either seen as a sheer miracle or is simply denied. In contrast, in her first lectures here, she attempts to arrive at a clear understanding of it - based on the spiritual scientific knowledge of Rudolf Steiner - and its significance for one's personal destiny. As a consequence of receiving the stigmata, von Halle began to experience the events of the life of Christ in full, sensory detail. In addition, she has explored these events by means of spiritual-scientific research methods - sometimes referred to as 'continuity of consciousness'. In the further five lectures of this volume, she offers a commentary to the "Mystery of Golgotha", the turning-point in world history. Her intention is to stimulate the reader to reflect patiently and repeatedly upon this great Mystery, and to enter into an ever closer relationship to Christ.Table of ContentsChapters: - About the knowledge and reality of the Resurrection of Christ - The significance of the phantom, the Resurrection Body, for an understanding of the human being - The Mystery of Golgotha as the end of the old and beginning of the new initiation - An account of the events between Death and Resurrection (Descent into Hell) - The Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and the last night on the Mount of Olives - The event of Easter at the time of Christ - The event of Whitsun at the time of Christ and its connection with Anthroposophy
