Hot Key Books The Big Lie
Book SynopsisShortlisted for the Peters Book of the Year. A shocking story of rebellion and revelation set in a contemporary Nazi England. Jessika Keller is a good girl: she obeys her father, does her best to impress Herr Fisher at the Bund Deutscher Mädel meetings and is set to be a world champion ice skater.Trade ReviewA genius idea, executed flawlessly. * Red *This high concept novel is intriguing, engrossing, and frighteningly plausible. I think we're going to see The Big Lie shortlisted for a great number of awards next year. * Louise O'Neill, author of ONLY EVER YOURS *Brilliantly realised . . . this unputdownable book is also a powerful and moving exploration of friendship, family, sexuality and what it really means to be "good" * Irish Times *The Big Lie is a chilling, beautifully written, minutely observed 'what if' novel that messes with your head and stays with you long, long after you've turned the final page. * Sarra Manning *A very special book * James Dawson, author of THIS BOOK IS GAY *Brave, beautiful and devastating...Like all the best speculative fiction it echoes not only the past but what is happening NOW. Amazing. * Rae Earl, author of MY MAD FAT DIARY *One book that everybody will be talking about... a thought-provoking and chilling coming-of-age novel exploring loyalty, love and morals. * The Bookseller (Children's Previews) *Devastating, thought-provoking alternate history -- Claire Allfree * Metro *The Big Lie is a powerful, uncompromising, uncomfortable, thought provoking, challenging and chilling read [...] frighteningly realistic -- Tanja Jennings * School Library Association *A powerful coming-of-age story, The Big Lie deftly takes on the big guns of dystopia, including sexism, feminism, sexuality, loyalty, propaganda, freedom and protest. Make sure you get a copy on your bookshelf, stat. * Stylist Online *Mayhew manages two feats, both crucial: she creates a believable modern-day Nazi society built on rules, silence, and surveillance, and a compelling depiction of a girl caught between what she has always been taught and what she is coming to suspect is true. As Jessika discovers, the truth is both dangerous and liberating * Publishers Weekly *Readers who know their World War II history and enjoy extremely unreliable narrators will find great satisfaction in puzzling out the truth behind the horrors Jess leaves unspoken * Kirkus *Beyond its alternate history premise, the book deftly examines the ways in which gender roles and sexuality play out under a society that strictly delineates them. There are surprises for both Jess and the reader in the ending, making this a timely piece for teens to consider what pacifism and/or protest looks like and the costs each entail * Bulletin For The Center of Children's Books *This is a story that paints the dangers of totalitarianism in vivid language * The Conversation *

Hot Key Books Out of Heart
Book SynopsisDonating your heart is the most precious gift of all. LONGLISTED for the 2018 CILIP CARNEGIE MEDALAdam is a teenage boy who lives with his mum and younger sister. Adam feels the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Then his grandfather dies and in doing so he donates a very precious gift - his heart.Trade ReviewThoughtfully conceived and beautifully executed OUT OF HEART found a place in my heart that will stay there forever. * Anna Perera, author of Guantanamo Boy *This extraordinary, almost magical, book is ostensibly the story of an organ donation but is really about the trauma, violence and messiness of an ordinary life. It's about communication and miscommunication, about being alone and loneliness; about giving, taking and sharing. In a world dominated by social media depicting perfect, and perfectly happy, lives, Out of Heart shows how it is life's imperfections that allow us to grow into who we are meant to be. * Booktrust *A gritty story full of heart (yes, pun kind of intended.) * Red Magazine *Master's use of Blake's The Little Boy Lost and The Little Boy Found, which serve as a prologue and epilogue respectively, was the proverbial icing on this delicious novel. At least one of us in the office was gently weeping only a few pages in. And Master's soaring phrases of prose juxtaposed with edgy use of the vernacular make for an exquisite pairing of styles. Just beautiful. An evocative novel for young adults but would also work well as a class-reader with year 6's in the summer term. * The Literacy Tree *a novel of exquisite artistry and contemporary storytelling * Nudge Magazine *Out of Heart is something entirely unique, heartwrenching and wonderful. * Alta Speaks *To put it simply, this book is unlike any I have ever read before. The writing is unusual, the characters are different, the setting is one not often used and the whole concept is one I would love to see more of. I love the mixture of writing - it was extremely clever in structure. This book really stands apart in many ways, and above all, it intrigued me. This book holds a lot of meaning. It talks about things many YA novels don't - abuse, depression, illness, mental health and race. I love the way this book explored nationality and I felt some of it directly related to situations in some communities here in the UK. I felt Adam's story really demonstrated the need for equality, and I wish we had more of that. It really struck a chord with me, and reminded me the real importance for stories like this to be told. * The Books Are Everywhere *Out of Heart is a wonderful exploration of friendship and family, love, loss and trust. Like all the best of YA, it confronts troubling subjects in a way that is uplifting but not sentimental * Book Muse *As soon as I got this book, I knew it was going to be something special, and I was not wrong at all. What a beautifully written story. All in all, I loved this coming of age story. The writing was beautiful. In fact, I'd say it was beautifully simple, almost poetic. I'd recommend this story to anyone looking for a quick but compelling read with a few surprises in store. * Alba in Bookland *Inventive use of form lifts this above the standard novel. t is also a moving exploration of the hurt that is passed on through families, of the inarticulacy of conventional masculinity and how that hampers emotional closeness, and about the controlling, demanding aspect of community. It's also an insight into contemporary Pakistani-British family life; something that's rarely written about in children's or YA literature. * Megaphone *There is a great deal to admire in this novel, not least its ambition, and some memorable writing. * Books For Keeps *Everything about this book was beautiful and down-to-earth, at times relatable, and the quotes and facts lining every chapter add to the ambience. Reading this book wasn't just a pass-time, it was an Experience (with a capitalised 'E' for emphasis). You don't just pick this book up to read when you're bored or to help you to get to sleep; you clear your schedules for it, have a good sit down with a cup of tea or coffee (or whatever else floats your boat) with a handful of biscuits. The writing is too exquisite, too magnificent for the mundane. The story has been carved with a knife so precise and measured that when it finishes it's 260 paged brevity, you're not entirely sure how you'd managed to come across something so profound.Additionally, the cover is simply delightful to look at, the incandescent gold against the ominous black. Often times, one is advised not to judge a book by its cover but honestly, the cover perfectly depicts the amount of beauty held within. The book is not Out of Heart at all but full of it, bursting at the seams, spilling over the brim. * Young Muslim Writers Awards *A narrative that pines, yearns, pulls and aches before, finally, flooding you with warmth and immeasurable hope. * Letterbox Library *this cleverly constructed and thought provoking coming of age story is rich in metaphor and offers the reader much to reflect upon * The Guardian *Lyrical and moving, this is an intimate picture of a small family coming to terms with their past and learning to fight for their future * The Scotsman *It would be a great book for class study, exploring as it does so many issues: grief, guilt, community/family expectations, domestic abuse, gangs, loneliness and communication to name but a few. The short chapters would also make it ideal for reluctant readers. * Reading Zone *this unusual, visceral and touching urban story is all heart * INIS Reading Guide *It's well paced, compelling and strong on depicting relationships of all kinds * School Library Association *Another memorable debut novel . . . Beautifully told this debut is set in 1940's India at the time of the Partition, with themes of tolerance that still resonate today * The Bookseller on A BEAUTIFUL LIE *

Hot Key Books Hope is our Only Wing
Book SynopsisA novel set in Zimbabwe about hope - and its power to heal a family, a friendship or even a nation. For fifteen-year-old Shamiso, struggling with grief and bewilderment following her father's death, hope is nothing but a leap into darkness.Trade ReviewA beautiful story of a teenage girl that has to navigate life between Zimbabwe and London. It's set against the political climate of Zimbabwe's transition from Rhodesia, but is ultimately a touching story about friendship and what it means to face your everyday fears. I can't recommend it enough! * The Bookseller *A powerful novel, one which is full of humanity and gentle wisdom - a paean to friendship and the need to retain a sense of hope, even during the darkest experiences of life. It is an impressive debut * Nudge Books *Much to admire * Books for Keeps *The book's themes include grief, loss, cancer, corruption, poverty and political assassinations. But the personal stories of the two main characters are not overshadowed by the political background, and it is the fact that we care about them both that makes this book so readable. A book for thoughtful, older readers. * Reading Zone *Compassionate, gripping and intelligent, and I loved seeing Zimbabwe through Shamiso's eyes - I wish there were more books around like this. The ending made me cry shamelessly in public. I absolutely loved it. * Emily Barr, author of THE ONE MEMORY OF FLORA BANKS *A striking novel that explores the necessity of hope at times when good news is in short supply * Inis Reading Guide *

Hot Key Books Big Bones
Book SynopsisThe heartwarming new novel from the sparkling Laura Dockrill, introducing Bluebelle, and her moving, hilarious take on food, body image and how we look after ourselves and others. It's a food diary.Trade ReviewLaura Dockrill is a very talented writer -- Mhairi McFarlaneBig Bones is the book I wish I'd had as a teenager and Bluebelle is a friend I wish I had today. Laura has written a beautiful love letter to some of the most important things in life: friends, family and food. -- Lindsey KelkA celebration of food sisterly love and what it means to be teen today, Big Bones had me laughing out loud * The Sun *I loved this character so much, she is a total breath of fresh air, an inspiration and we could all do with taking a lesson from her. I recommend this for every single person * Edel's Book Blog *As energising as a super food salad, as satisfying and nourishing as your favourite home-cooked meal, this delectable novel about feeling comfortable in your own skin has been prepared with sisterly love and comes served on a bed of inspiration. Stuffed with lashings of laugh-out-loud loveliness (just wait until you read about Bum Tills...), relatable real-life truths and love in all its complicated, dizzying forms (food-love, friend-love, sisterly-love, boy-love, self-love), this is, quite simply, the best YA book about self-esteem and body image I've ever read * Lovereading *this book is a real lesson in loving yourself and ignoring what people thing! BB's confidence is inspiring! * Shout Magazine *It was so deeply refreshing to read about a young woman who had utter confidence in how she looked, seeing sexy in muffin tops and belly rolls. It shows how ingrained it is, for me at least, to be in a space where we expect young women to hate how they look, as I found myself continually having my head pulled up but this novel surprise. Bluebelle is a pleasure to spend time with, and the story of her family, the navigation of the 'from child to adult' years, and be relationship with food are all equally absorbing. Pull up a seat at her table and tuck in! * Dogeared Reads *Laura Dockrill has such a unique writing style and her poetic freshness is a joy to behold. One second, you are laughing big belly laughs at her turn of phrase, and the next, you are crying There is so much food for thought in Big Bones, making it a book for teenagers to savour, and, above all, enjoy. Adult readers may wish they'd had the book to accompany them when they were teenagers, too * Booktrust *Big Bones is a book with a big heart * The Skinny *First of all, I LOVED the body positivity in Big Bones. It's a topic that I feel isn't addressed enough in YA fiction and it should be. Why shouldn't we all learn to love our bodies? Bluebelle's admiration for her own body was inspirational - young girls will read this book and hopefully realise that they don't need to be stick thin to be beautiful. Granted, BB was a fictional character but in my mind she is a beautiful young woman. Big Bones was an entertaining read and shows you the importance of loving yourself, looking out for family and friends and finding out what really matters. It's a book that helps bring out body positivity in a unique way and the character of BB will certainly stick with me for a long time * Amy's Bookish Life *An excellent story celebrating food and health and body positivity from the witty and relatable Bluebelle * Emily Jade Books *Overall, this is a great read... great for all young adults, yet also for people of all ages who just love food. The body positivity messages which stem from this book are simple: love your body, treat it well and feed it well * Romantics, Rebels and Reviews *Dockrill, who is also known for her performance poetry, captures the cadences of contemporary teenage life brilliantly * Irish Times *this book touched me in a way that I wasn't expecting. Don't let the light hearted cover fool you, this book will hit you hard. But I'm so glad that I read it, there is an overwhelmingly body positive message spread by Dockrill's novel which I think is important for many to read * Yorkshire Post *As energising as a superfood salad, as satisfying and nourishing as your favourite home-cooked meal, this delectable novel about feeling comfortable in your own skin has been prepared with sisterly love and comes served on a bed of inspiration * LoveReading 4 Kids *This book's message- about not only being yourself but about the importance of being comfortable in your own skin and knowing your own worth- is one that, as a feminist and a young woman myself, I strongly feel that every young girl needs to hear in a world increasingly dominated and torn apart by Photoshop, Instagram filters, eating disorders, self doubt and self hatred. Everyone should be a little kinder to themselves, and a little more BB. Take my advice, and read this book not only for its empowering message, but also for its humour and its heart * The Fairy Dust Book Blog *A love song to food and the acceptance of your own body . . . Moving and hilarious -- Beth Goodyear * The Scotsman *Glorious... a paean to feasting, family and good care of the self... Irresistibly hilarious and original, it shows Dockrill's enormous rhapsodic charm * The Guardian *A love song to food and the acceptance of your own body... Moving and hilarious * The Scotsman *Laura's writing is fabulous, it flows well, is beautifully descriptive - even foods I don't like/haven't tried I wanted to - and so so funny! * Bulletproof Scarecrow *I loved this book from beginning to end. I wish I'd had it to read as a teenager because Bluebelle would have been my absolute hero. This book was fun to read from beginning to end, I cared deeply about every character and I loved feeling like part of Bluebelle's family for a short while. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been a teenager concerned about their body (so probably most people!). Bluebelle's confidence is infectious and inspiring * Cosy Reading Nest *Teens will love BB's authentic, frank, funny tone, and inspirational levels of self-confidence, self-love, and self awareness. Young adults will love the no-shame approach, immersive narrative, and real, honest feel. Parents will love the related struggle of BB's mother who feels responsible for her daughter's weight, health and emotional wellbeing * Happiful Magazine *A body-positive book for the next generation, Big Bones follows Bluebelle, aka Big Bones, aka BB. A bold, beautiful, confident girl who accepts herself for who she is - wobbly bits and all - Dockrill's most recent novel presents teens with an inspiring young woman we all wish we had been * Happiful Online *I love how 'Big Bones' took me on this journey of self-reflection while also providing a very honest and refreshingly real story to read. Y'all should also pick it up. Plus, it gets bonus points for being SO BEAUTIFUL to take photos of. * The Copper Boom *Bluebell is extremely confident (something i wasn't) and she adores herself, which is great to read. However there are comments to her being wary people are looking at her and judging her and a little bit of paranoia. That was a really great touch that normalizes those thoughts but also shows that you can be confident and happy with yourself * The LIttle Contemporary Corner *BB's devil may care attitude and all round swag made her a bonefide girl crush character for me. She could teach us all a few tricks on upping our body confidence * The Book Geek Boutique *I would recommend picking this up and giving it a chance to grow on you if you're looking for something that really celebrates food and bodies, being a girl and growing up * Scriven Books *I honestly loved reading this book. It feels like a real lesson on self love and you feel like BB is really a part of your life for that short time. It was sad, happy, enlightening and heartwarming to read and I wish that I had read it when I was younger * Max and Mummy *Such a hilarious and thought provoking read, with the most amazing descriptions of food that I've ever read. It's a great contribution to the discussion on body image and body positivity, and I highly recommend giving it a read * Julia's Bookcase *Beneath the humour and bravado there's a lot for readers to think about, and valuable cues for discussions about self-esteem, body image and differing societal expectations for girls and boys * Armadillo Magazine *Big Bones is a fun filled novel about body image, delicious food and the 21st century lifestyle of a teen. It has the perfect amount of body positivity and self-worth * Library Looter *Brilliant and funny and delicious. I loved it -- Jade Anouka * Big Issue *I loved Big Bones because of the message it had to say about body positivity and being true to yourself. It made me laugh a lot. If you do read this be prepared to read with snacks because every page will make you hungry * The Overflowing Library *An awesome read * Teen Titles *

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Alan Turing
Book SynopsisAlan Turing was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. He created one of the first designs for a stored-program computer and is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain''s codebreaking centre, where he was responsible for breaking German naval codes, including the supposedly unbreakable Enigma code, and helping the Atlantic convoys avoid German U-boat attacks. This work probably shortened World War II by up to four years, saving millions of lives. This is the story of the amazing life and work of a British hero and one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.Trade ReviewInteresting and effective biography of the famous mathematician...accessible but with an occasionally challenging vocabulary, it will appeal to a wide range of kids.
