Book SynopsisA classroom-tested resource for social and emotional learning Henry's discovery of the many ways he can be kind will inspire young readers to use the simple mindfulness practices taught in this book to develop their own capacities for kindness.Trade Review"What did you like about the book? Mindfulness in the classroom is a growing trend, and Henry is Kind is a wonderful way to introduce the concept to lower-grade elementary students. Henry is listening to his teacher and classmates talk about all of the kind acts they have done, and he starts getting frustrated that he can’t think of a single nice thing he did. Luckily, his classmates are there to remind him that no small act goes unnoticed, and sometimes even the littlest moments make a big impact. At the end of the book, Ryden included a few pages on Mindfulness and Heartfulness. These pages have a plethora of information and resources for readers to incorporate the practices in their own lives. To whom would you recommend this book? Parents, Public and School libraries" -- Meghann Price, Lynn Vocational Technical Institute, Lynn, MA - Youth Services Book Review,"These delightful, captivating books are full of powerful practical methods for kids - and their parents." -- Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Resilient, Hardwiring Happiness, and Buddha’s Brain"Henry Is Kind is bright, fun, and engaging, which is wonderful because it means kids will love it. And it provides an easy way for teachers and parents to help children understand and enjoy being kind, which means adults will love it too." -- Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Real Love"Linda Ryden is an amazing author, teacher and overall person. Her approach to mindfulness makes it achievable for all, and I consider her an expert in the field of social emotional learning and mindfulness. Her books serve as a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and students." -- Wanda H. Legrand, Ed.D Deputy Chancellor District of Columbia Public Schools

Tilbury House,U.S. Tyaja Uses the THiNK Test

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMs. Snowden introduces the THiNK Test to Tyaja’s class.Trade Review"Mindfulness teacher Ms. Snowden begins this book by saying, "Let's talk about the power of words," and that is exactly what it accomplishes. This is an easy-to-understand book about the importance of consciously selecting words that are True, Helpful, Necessary, and Kind. When Ms. Snowden writes the acronym THNK on the board, she explains that the missing "i" represents the thinker in the THiNK Test. Later that day, Tyaja, a little black girl with kinky-curly hair, decides to tell her friend Rosie, a little white girl, that she does not like Rosie's new haircut. Suddenly "four tiny winged people" appear, each representing one of the words in the THiNK Test acronym. These wee advisers give Tyaja enough information about the words they represent to help her determine whether what she wants to tell Rosie passes the THiNK Test. "Isn't there a difference between an opinion and the truth?" asks Mr. True. Miss Helpful suggests that, since Rosie can't do anything about her haircut anyway, Tyaja's offering that opinion is anything but. This book is part of a series (Sergio Sees the Good, 2019, etc.) that features children of different races and abilities in various social learning situations. In this particular offering, the skin tones and facial features of some of the characters change significantly from page to page, which may distract readers. A great book to share with children for social-emotional learning. (author's note) (Picture book. 5-10) " -- Kirkus Reviews" 5 Stars! What did you like about the book? This book is a wonderful tool to help children make the right choices in communicating with others. One young girl named Tyaja puts this process to the test when she wants to comment on her friend’s new haircut. Tyaja does not like her haircut and feels that she is being truthful and it is necessary to tell her friend how she feels. However, she is visited by the “THINK fairies” and they help her work through this dilemma. This was important because children can walk through their own scenarios and determine what they would do in situations in their own lives. To whom would you recommend this book? Perfect for children between the ages of five and eight. Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries, anyone who works with children between the ages of five and eight. Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes " -- Kristin Guay, former youth librarian - Youth Services Book Review"These delightful, captivating books are full of powerful practical methods for kids - and their parents." -- Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Resilient, Hardwiring Happiness, and Buddha’s Brain

  • A New Day: Moving On From Hunger, Anxiety,

Inter-Varsity Press A New Day: Moving On From Hunger, Anxiety,

Book Synopsis* Can I break free from my eating disorder? * Why do I struggle with such anxiety? * Where can I go with my shame and despair? * Does my life have to be like this? 'I'm controlling and insecure and desperate to prove my own worth,' admits Emma Scrivener, and then goes on, 'I'm a Christian, but I don't always feel like it.' There are lots of how-to books out there. In terms of the practicalities of recovery, they're brilliant. What they don't address is the spiritual dimension. However, even when writing about 'spiritual recovery', the author confesses that it's tempting to offer some sort of programme or strategy. 'But I don't think I've got one,' she says. What she does offer are practical suggestions for how to apply core gospel truths to practical circumstances. With honesty and examples from real life (including her own), Emma connects with her reader. She shows how the gospel can speak to every heart and every addiction, equipping readers with confidence in Christ's sufficiency and the power of his Word and Spirit to bring change where change seems impossible.Trade ReviewBrilliant. Packed with wise thoughts and advice. * Evangelicals Now *An invaluable resource. * Inspire Magazine *A remarkable and unique book… Emma has shown great courage yet again in writing about her own pain and brokenness in order to speak into a huge range of personal crises, but she does so with creativity, deep pastoral sensitivity and clear gospel conviction. This is a rare book that can truly speak into the darkness of our pain without any judgements, at the same time as holding out the genuine hope of lasting change. -- Mark Meynell * Blogger, author and Langham Partnership *Emma’s humility, gentleness and confidence in God weave through every page as she encourages fellow strugglers to move from darkness to light. -- Helen Thorne * Biblical Counselling UK *Emma shares her scars… And if we groan "me too", then we need to take time not only to see our chains, but also rejoice in the real, grounded, hard-won, tear-stained, Christ-centred answers Emma so wonderfully holds out to us. -- Rico Tice * Minister for Evangelism, All Souls Langham Place, London *Shows the ability of the gospel to connect gloriously with raw life, pain and need. -- Joel Virgo * Senior Pastor, Church of Christ the King, Brighton *

Loose-lined drawings with gently tinted wash by Gusti (Mallko and Dad) underscore the intimacy and loyalty of Ben’s family. ~Publishers Weekly This is a story inspired by true events. Ben is a little boy, and he likes painting his nails. There’s no big reason to it, he just loves all the amazing colors on the tips of his fingers. Until one day, some of his schoolmates start laughing at him because of it. He suddenly feels sad, helpless, and doesn’t want to paint his nails anymore. Even when his father starts painting his nails to support Ben, the helplessness doesn’t go away. Why can’t boys paint their nails? A tale to understand that a kid’s joy has no boundaries. A simple story about a small revolution.Trade ReviewIt's perfectly okay--in fact, it seems preferable--to be yourself. This would be a great title to share with youngster to spark some conversations about their own assumptions about gender and gender roles or what they might have done to make Ben feel okay about his colorful nails. ~Goodreads -- Barbara * Goodreads *Coauthors Acosta (Little Captain Jack) and Amavisca (Bang Bang I Hurt the Moon) keep their focus tight, concentrating on Ben’s feelings and the way the boys’ taunting torments him (“He felt even sadder than the day his fish went to fishy heaven”).
