Teenagers Frank, Joseph and Stephen are Royal Navy recruits on their first mission at sea during the Second World War. Their ship is part of an Arctic Convoy sailing to Russia to deliver supplies to the Soviets. The convoys have to navigate treacherous waters, sailing through a narrow channel between the Arctic ice pack and German bases on the Norwegian coast. Faced with terrifying enemy attacks from both air and sea, as well as life-threatening cold and storms, will all three boys make it home again?Trade Review"Historical fiction doesn't get much better than this" – LoveReading4Kids "Had me on the edge of my seat" – Dan Smith "An excellent and moving tale … Palmer has written a real page-turner here" – Aspects of History "I'm awestruck by his ability to make history come alive and resonate emotionally in beautifully compact prose … written dramatically and sensitively; Palmer's writing is sharp like a chisel, finding the heart under the harsh cold of war" – Chris Soul "Artful descriptions ensure that we wholly experience each sensation – from grief to brutal cold – with the characters, and (as always with Tom Palmer) we finish knowing, and caring, much more than when we started" – Roaring Reads, Blog

They flew together in groups on dangerous missions into enemy territory. They dropped bombs on railways, factories and cities. The largest and most advanced aircraft was the American bomber, the B29 Superfortress.4 Blitzed citiesFrom September 1940, German bombers attacked British cities through a series of nightly air raids known as the Blitz. In July 1943, around 6,000 tanks were used in the battle between German and Russian troops near the town of Kursk, in Central Russia.6 In the PacificThe Allies battled against Japanese forces for control of the South Pacific using powerful aircraft carriers. These aircraft carriers had powerful rotating cannon and short range machine guns. They held over 100 aircraft and had around 3,500 crew on board. By 1944, the aircraft carriers faced threats from Japanese Kamikaze pilots.7 D-DayOn June 6, 1944, around around 150,000 allied troops stormed the five beaches of Normandy, in German-occupied France. It was called D-Day and it was the biggest invasion i history.8 Final monthsFrom June 1944, the German army had been pushed back through Europe by Allied troops from the West and by the Soviets from the East. The Soviets reached the Germany's capital, Berlin by April 1945. The Germans surrendered to the Allies on May 2, 1945. On August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allies after two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Book Synopsis**Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) Winner****Middle School Book of the Year — Northern Lights Book Awards****Skipping Stones Honor Award Winner**For the first time, middle readers can learn the complete story of the courageous girl whose life, which ended through the effects of war, inspired a worldwide call for peace. In this book, author Sue DiCicco and Sadako's older brother Masahiro tell her complete story in English for the first time—how Sadako's courage throughout her illness inspired family and friends, and how she became a symbol of all people, especially children, who suffer from the impact of war. Her life and her death carry a message: we must have a wholehearted desire for peace and be willing to work together to achieve it. Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Ten years later, just as life was starting to feel almost normal again, this athletic and enthusiastic girl was fighting a war of a different kind. One of many children affected by the bomb, she had contracted leukemia. Patient and determined, Sadako set herself the task of folding 1000 paper cranes in the hope that her wish to be made well again would be granted.Illustrations and personal family photos give a glimpse into Sadako's life and the horrors of war. Proceeds from this book are shared equally between The Sadako Legacy NPO and The Peace Crane Project.Trade Review"My grandfather, Harry S. Truman, never spoke to me about the atomic bombings of Japan. Like most Americans, I learned about them in school…Sadako Sasaki's story was the first human story of the bombings I'd ever read. It led me to [her brother] Masahiro and two visits to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the second…to record survivor testimony for the Truman Presidential Library. In all that time, Masahiro rarely told his own version of his family's story, preferring to focus on his sister's courage and selflessness. Now, we have the full story of the courage and selflessness of the entire Sasaki family, their friends and the people of Hiroshima." —Clifton Truman Daniel, Grandson of President Harry S. Truman"Through reading the story of Sadako Sasaki you will know that the abolition of nuclear weapons and the rejection of war are the only path to survival for mankind. As you read the unbearable tragedy brought by the atomic bombing, you will learn the real meaning of 'to live' from Sadako, who patiently fought against an incurable disease that was so hard to endure." —Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, Former Mayor, Hiroshima, Japan"Focusing on one person's story opens the possibility of becoming engaged in the abolition of nuclear weapons. If a mere one hundred explode, every person's life on this frail planet will suffer beyond normal imagination and we must never let that happen." —Jonathan Granoff, President, Global Security Institute

Book SynopsisThe UK was once a huge global superpower. Bigger than the Roman Empire. Bigger than the Incas, Mayas, Aztecs, Mughal, Ottoman or any other European, Asian, African or American power. Its influence was felt in countries all over the world, but it didn't just affect countries over there. It affected everything about the islands we live on today. It affected the language we speak, the food we eat, the buildings that surround us, the people who live here, and the prosperity we enjoy. It is who we are today. And yet while we teach our children about the Romans, Egyptians, Mughals, Ottomans and other empires, we breathe barely a word about the biggest, wealthiest, most powerful and most influential superpower ever. From the Industrial North to the grandchildren of the Windrush generation, to children in overseas territories and former colonies, to those whose families came here fleeing persecution, this book will examine the modern culture of Britain, the Commonwealth and all countries historically connected to her past. It will look at identity and encourage children to discover and celebrate their own stories and the ways we are all connected to each other.

Book SynopsisA gripping nonfiction graphic novel that follows the stories of Jewish children, separated from their parents, who escaped the horrors of the Holocaust.Trade Review★ "Brown applies his signature graphic-nonfiction approach to the rescue of Jewish young people from the Holocaust. Sequences about broader historical events set the scene before Brown turns focus to individual human stories, showing poignant moments as parents and children say what may be final goodbyes. Striking." — Horn Book (starred review) "A powerful account focusing on the fates of Jewish children during the Holocaust. Vivid, devastating, and impressively documented." — Kirkus Reviews "Brown (83 Days in Mariupol) chronicles standout stories of children who managed to escape harrowing circumstances during the Holocaust in this hard-hitting graphic novel. Though Brown does not shy away from the reality that more than a million children died, through these true and deftly told experiences, he offers hope amid the devastation." — Publishers Weekly "Devastating. With illustrations that are at times tender and other times gruesome, Brown has found a way to convey the destruction of the Holocaust to younger readers. Add this graphic novel to your list of resources for teaching and learning about the Holocaust." — School Library Journal "This indelible graphic perspective grimly etches a crucial acknowledgment of the Holocaust’s harrowing toll on humanity’s youngest and most vulnerable." — Booklist "While the narrative boxes throughout convey pertinent information, dialogue bubbles and slightly skewed, unsettling art layer in elements of emotional urgency and intimate heartbreak. The unfortunate parallels to the kidnappings in Ukraine and the family separations at the U.S. southern border offer timely sparks for discussion." — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
