    Quarto Publishing PLC Our Tower

Book Synopsis*Featured in BookTrust’s Great Books Guide 2023*From award-winning children’s poet Joseph Coelho comes this enchanting story of three kids looking for adventure in their tower block. Drawn from Coelho’s own experience growing up in a tower block, this is a celebration and reclaiming of them as places full of power and magic.A power that resides in the smiles of our neighbours. A magic that seeps out when we swap our home-baked flavours. A deeply personal story written by the award-winning poet Joseph Coelho, drawn from his own experience growing up in a tower block and looking for adventure. Three children living in the tower block travel to a strange, magical world inside a tree and meet an old man with supernatural powers… only to realise that the magic they’d been looking for had been in the tower block all that time, in Trade Review"Coelho draws on his own experience growing up in a tower block on the edge of Richmond Park in London in this title." * The Bookseller *"Coelho drew upon his own experiences to tell this story about three children who leave their tower block and tumble into a strange world underneath a tree. There, a “tree-grown man” helps them understand the power of nature and, when they resurface, their tower block is transformed into a place of colour and light. Gorgeously illustrated by Johnson, this modern-day fable is a celebration of high-rise living and its ties to the ancient, natural world" * The Bookseller *Fresh to the post of children’s laureate, Joseph Coelho is releasing Our Tower […] Coelho, who was inspired by his experience growing up in London, has said “I wanted to bring the magic of Narnia to the tower block” — which seems the perfect mission statement […] books can’t fill tummies but they can provide hope and escape. * The Guardian *‘The new children’s laureate has written a poem about living in a tower block and a magical journey into the forest to rediscover our connection to nature. Richard Johnson’s gentle illustrations capture the magic in this picture book for older children.’ * The Sunday Times *“Gorgeously illustrated by Richard Johnson, this picture book is a love letter to high-rise living and its connection to the ancient, natural world.” * The Sunday Post *“The new Children’s Laureate draws on his own experiences for this fantastical nature-based fable which encourages three children to see their tower block home in a new light.” * i-newspaper *‘Fresh to the post of children’s laureate, Joseph Coelho is releasing Our Tower […] Coelho, who was inspired by his experience growing up in London, has said “I wanted to bring the magic of Narnia to the tower block” — which seems the perfect mission statement […] books can’t fill tummies but they can provide hope and escape’ * The Observer *“This glowing, poetic picture book from the new children’s laureate celebrates the joys of community in urban spaces while quietly affirming that the natural world belongs to everyone.” * The Guardian *“Our Tower celebrates the joys of community in urban spaces while quietly affirming that the natural world belongs to everyone”. * The Guardian *“A picture book drawn from the author’s own experience of finding magic and community in the tower block where he grew up.” * The Bookseller *

Book Synopsis“Castrillón offers riotous sprouting life through soft forms, stylized shapes, and bright colors.” —Publishers Weekly “Elegant...A charmingly verdant tale in classic style.” —Kirkus Reviews “Lovely...delightful.” —School Library Journal From internationally acclaimed illustrator Melissa Castrillon comes a magical story of how a girl’s garden in her new home changes her life and the lives of people all around her. When a little girl moves from her home to an apartment in the city, she takes her pretty plants with her and one by one they grow and bloom and change both her world and the world all around her as she makes a new friend. When your heart is open, the world is full of possibilities.Trade ReviewThe girl who stars in this nearly wordless tale by Castrillón (If I Had a Little Dream) has rosy cheeks and short dark hair and lives blissfully in the countryside. Castrillón’s lush spreads of her house and its surroundings recall early modern woodcuts and traditional folk art. Movement is everywhere: curtains sway, smoke curls. Then the girl’s parents tell her that her mother has gotten a new job and they must move to the city (“Goodbye,” hand-lettered text reads). Their new brick walk-up has a balcony, and from it the girl stares forlornly at the hills where she used to play. But she’s brought a pot with her, in which she plants seeds (“Hope,” the letters read). A large, artichokelike plant soon springs forth, growing by leaps and bounds, and slowly, the girl transforms her balcony into a wild garden. Tendrils and flowers reach the balcony below; neighbors rejoice. She spots a child with dark skin and curly hair across the way, and their families become friends. Castrillón offers riotous sprouting life through soft forms, stylized shapes, and bright colors. “Bloom where you’re planted,” the adage goes, and that’s just what this girl does. Ages 4–8. (Sept.) -- Publishers Weekly * June 17, 2019 *A child gardener makes a new place feel like home. The young protagonist, whose skin is the pale cream of the book's paper, enjoys the lush garden of their country home, serenely having tea with animal friends. Then a job change for their parents means goodbye. Saddened, they move to an apartment in the city, from which they gaze longingly at the distant country from their third-story balcony. They plant seeds in a pot, and, seemingly overnight, an asparagus-looking bloom sprouts. It grows steadily, eventually becoming even taller than the child's parents. With more plants, the balcony soon becomes an overflowing oasis of flora, attracting friendly animals, until the whole neighborhood is teeming with vegetation. The plants form connections among the community, including the protagonist's friendship with a next-door-neighbor child who has dark skin and wears their hair in braided knots. The occasional text provides some plot developments (a posted letter inviting the mother to take a job in the city) and conveys strong moods ("Hope" appears next to the child as they pot their initial plant). Digitally colored pencil illustrations are classically styled, with hatchings, strong lines, playful spatial distortions reminiscent of Wanda Gág, and a vintage-feeling tri-color palette. The organic elements have especially enchanting forms. Elegant drawings and sparse, emotive text make this story accessible to readers of a wide age range .A charmingly verdant tale in classic style. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Kirkus * July 15, 2019 *CASTRILLÓN, Melissa. The Balcony. illus. by Melissa Castrillón. 48p. S. & S./Paula Wiseman Bks. Sept. 2019. Tr $17.99. ISBN 9781534405882. PreS-Gr 2–A young girl brings along her love of the outdoors as she makes the adjustment of moving from a country home to a city apartment in this mostly wordless attestation to the possibilities of change and the meaning of home. When her mother receives a great job offer in the city, a girl is heartbroken to leave her home’s lush garden where she has found solace with the flora and fauna, only to move to an apartment where the main access to the outdoors is a small, barren balcony. Soon, with some seeds she brought with her, she starts a balcony garden that quickly flourishes, spilling over to the balconies below hers. While enjoying her garden, she meets a friend, which leads to a satisfying realization that home can be a lot of things. With only a few elegantly hand lettered words, Castrillón’s richly hued digital and pencil Ottoman-style illustrations carry the story. Making use of the book’s narrow shape, she moves back and forth between spreads and vignettes that add pacing and offer moments to pause and bask in the splendor of the magical world the girl is creating. Centered on the child’s story, other story lines unfold in the background, reinforcing the book’s theme of hope in change. VERDICT A book to assuage the fear of moving to a new home, this lovely illustrated tale will be a delightful addition to most collections.–Danielle Jones, Multnomah County Library, OR -- School Library Journal * September 2019 *

Book SynopsisOne of The New York Times' Notable Children's Books of 2017: 'In this delightful and heartwarming throwback to the big-family novels of yesteryear, a large biracial family might lose their beloved brownstone home, but win it back with an all-out charm offensive.'Trade Review"Glaser’s love for the Vanderbeekers shines through in her prose and stick drawings. Readers will look forward to future adventures. A highly recommended purchase for all middle grade collections." — School Library Journal (starred review) "Few [families] in children’s literature are as engaging or amusing as the Vanderbeekers." — Booklist (starred review) "[Karina Yan Glaser’s] contemporary family narrative preserves the winsome tone and innocence of the aforementioned classics while updating them with a rich, modern diversity of characters, settings and problems. Glaser’s warmhearted story highlights a cold truth: What is often missing in the busy lives of today’s plugged-in, checked-out families is a sense of community. In the vast village of New York City, she suggests, what it takes to raise a child can still be found on one square block." — New York Times Book Review "A heartwarming story about family and community that will appeal to readers who also enjoy an old-fashioned feel." — Kirkus Reviews "With rich dialogue and detailed descriptions of the neighborhood, the text provides a humorous and heartwarming story about siblings uniting to save their home. Through the Vanderbeekers, Glaser provides a portrait of the splendors of Harlem and the sense of community that can be built among neighbors of all backgrounds. This will draw fans of rollicking family stories, and while it’s centered on Christmas, it would be enjoyable any time of the year." — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books "Uplifting. Readers who enjoy a cheery story that’s simultaneously old-fashioned and of the moment in its sensibility will enjoy this introduction to the Vanderbeekers and look forward to their future adventures." — Publishers Weekly "Glaser’s third-person narration weaves individual characters’ plot threads and a palpable sense of place through the larger family story in the tradition of Jeanne Birdsall, Sydney Taylor, Elizabeth Enright, and Hilary McKay." — The Horn Book “The Vanderbeekers join the Melendys, the Cassons, and the ‘All of a Kind’ Family on my list of favorite book-families. I’m in love with every single Vanderbeeker! Their story is utterly enchanting: I did not want it to end. More, please?” — Linda Sue Park, Newbery medalist

The second children’s book from the wonderful illustrator John Broadley, working with Booker-shortlisted novelist Mick Jackson, following their glorious debut picture book While You’re Sleeping. Mick Jackson’s poetic prose and John Broadley’s detailed and unique illustrations make this a special book to read again and again, and treasure for years to come. Beautifully illustrated in a limited colour palette, the winding, lyrical text follows a child’s growth through travel – from crawling to walking, skating to biking and then on to trains, boats and planes. It also looks at the 'journey of life', how children grow and develop, how they choose their own routes through life, and make lasting memories as they go. Starting with the first time a baby comes home with its parents and ending with a grandparent reflecting on their life, it's a beautiful evocation of the journeys we all take through our lives.Trade Review'This is a beautiful picture book - in the style of richly patterned woodcuts - about the journeys of a lifetime' -- The Sunday Times'Highly unusual and engrossing ... There’s such wealth of pattern, texture and stories aplenty at each page turn, this is a book to return to over and over with new understanding and perhaps different questions emerging from each read' -- Books for Keeps'Captivating and mesmeric… this book challenges children to think about what they want to do with their lives, and dream about what they want to achieve ... highly recommended for KS1 and lower KS2' -- School Reading List'Cleverly intertwined, the lyrical text takes readers on a journey of discovery ... The detailed and unique illustrations offer readers new viewpoints and perspectives, causing memories to re-focus or history to come to life. Having read both books by this incredible duo, I have no doubt there will be more to come. These books are sure to be enjoyed by all ages and will be treasured parts of my own collection for years to come. Beautiful and thought provoking' -- My Shelves are Ful'After their terrific debut ... author Mick Jackson and illustrator John Broadley pair up again and the result is another exciting, engrossing book ... Assuredly this is a book to return to over and over with the likelihood of new questions and fresh understanding emerging on each reading' -- Red Reading Hub'Cleverly intertwined, the lyrical text takes readers on a journey of discovery ... Beautiful and thought provoking' -- My Shelves are Full'I love the illustrations, they each seem to be made up of unique patterns, and I love the colour pallet. This is a real ‘stand out’ book, and one which is as equally special to look at as it is to read' -- Rosie's Library'Mick writes this sweeping, expansive idea of journeys in beautiful lyrical text which flows effortlessly, weaving together all these different journeys to show how they fit into the journey of life. Illustrating this huge breadth of ideas perfectly is @john.broadley.77 who's instantly recognisable style is bold, dazzling and unique' -- Teeny Readers'Captivating and mesmeric' -- School Reading List'It has unique and intricate illustrations, almost retro in appearance, full of lines, dot and dashes in a beautifully muted colour palette ... It’s no wonder the first book was shortlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize 2021' -- Raising Bookworms'The beautiful, lyrical text from Mick Jackson is brought to life through the stunning illustrations of John Broadley. The limited colour palette of greens and pinks and the intricate details in the images make it one to pore over and for me provided a wonderful juxtaposition - evoking a timeless sense of the past whilst also feeling fresh and new ... This would make such a gorgeous gift for a new baby as they begin their journey through life. It would equally be a fantastic book to launch a Ks1 topic around Journeys' -- Mrs Brown's Book Box'Lyrical text takes us on a journey of life' -- Armadillo magazine'Stylishly illustrated ...
