Book SynopsisA beacon of hope for women and men who fear that they will pass the abuse they have suffered on to their children, partners, or employees. Humane and compassionate but also clear and down to earth, this is a wonderful contribution to the literature on healing. --Lundy Bancroft, author of When Dad Hurts Mom and Why Does He Do That? In this remarkably powerful, wise, and compassionate book, Beverly Engel leads readers step by step through a program that will help survivors of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse in childhood to heal from their wounds so they don''t need to re-enact their abusive pasts. She offers expert advice and strategies to help parents and would-be parents avoid doing to their children what was done to them and helps both abusers and victims in emotionally and physically abusive relationships make vitally important changes in their relationships. --Susan Forward, Ph.D., author of Toxic Parents and Emotional Blackmail If you wereTrade ReviewAccording to Engel, "in the past twenty-five years studies on abuse and family assaults strongly suggest that abused children become abusers themselves," yet victims often don't receive any treatment until their repetition of the abuse is already underway. In this clear, empathetic self-help book, Engel aims to stop that cycle by teaching readers to remember the past truthfully, to identify and manage their emotions, and to recognize the characteristics of abusive relationships. An experienced psychotherapist and prolific author (The Emotionally Abused Woman; Loving Him without Losing You, etc.), Engel is also an abuse survivor herself. Her attitude towards her readers is gentle and understanding; she clearly knows firsthand how difficult victim and abuser patterns are to break. Readers are expected to perform a good deal of homework aiming at self-discovery: answering simple questions, writing down their memories, tracing family patterns, etc. Some may argue that Engel presents the most crucial advice--what to do if you've already become abusive--too late in volume, by which point an abuser may have dropped the book. But the middle chapters--on shame and its manifestations, on anger, sorrow and fear--are some of the best, especially when Engel delves into the effects of physical, sexual and emotional abuse on children. Though she deals thoroughly with the psychology of victims, Engel concentrates far more than in her earlier books on trying to reach violent and sexual offenders. Violation begets violation, she says. Parental attitudes and behavior, be they cruel, indifferent or supportive, are passed on to later generations. This book is an excellent choice for readers who come from an abusive past and are struggling to make a brighter future for themselves and their families. Book SynopsisThe public is right to be concerned about child protective services, shows Waldfogel, but many perceptions of the CPS system and the problems it is designed to alleviate are inaccurate. This book goes beyond the headlines, using historical, comparative, and specific case data to formulate a new approach to protecting children.Trade ReviewThrough a carefully balanced analysis, The Future of Child Protection advances the policy debate beyond the 'child abuse as a problem of poverty' and the 'criminalization of child abuse' perspectives in the current literature. Peter Dale looks in detail at the lessons to be learnt from people′s experiences of therapy... a relief to find such a comprehensive, well-researched book on the subject from a psychotherapeutic perspective.... Its wider relevance is that we (society, therapists and service-planners in particular) must learn from people who have been abused as children, so that appropriate and supportive services can be set up′ - Transformations, The PCSR Journal `Dale argues strongly that childhood abuse causes complex problems. He further argues that therapy can, on the whole, offer positive strategies for dealing with complex and often contradictory issues and themes arising from dealing with childhood abuse within a proffesional therapeutic arena. As such the voices of less mainstream commentators ( such as feminist work by, for example Sarah Armstrong ) are, by implication, marginalised within the book′ - Phychology of Women Section `The strength of this book lies in the voice which Dale gives his research subjects in Part 2 of the book and in the section on memory controversy. The reader learns a great deal from these respondents and Dale affords them respect in large measure, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions in the more contentious areas of debate′ - Counselling `It is indeed rare and refreshing to discover a book that is appealing to both mental health professionals and those they serve. Peter Dale provides a unique insight into a comprehensive yet not pedantic work that addresses the issue of abuse, its long term sequelae, treatment approaches and client concerns....It is impossible to extol the virtues of this work in a short review.... This is definitely a "must read volume"′ - Family Violence and Sexual Assault Bulletin `I believe this book - based on Peter Dale′s research into the experience of 53 clients - is of profound importance to practising counsellors, trainers and researchers....I recommend this carefully designed and executed piece of research to all BAC readers′ - Mary Berry, Senior Lecturer in Counselling, University of Manchester `This is a useful book that offer4s insights into outcomes for a sample of adults who sought help for the effects of their childhood abuse and the affect of the personal qualities and approaches of their therapists. Book SynopsisThis collection of essays addresses twentieth-century historical and contemporary issues regarding children who are considered to be at risk. The essays explore the language of risk as it is used by the courts, the schools, governmental agencies, and child advocates, those who discover risks and create correctives for children who both need protection and threaten to disturb the social order. The tasks require an exploration of differing, often contradictory, concepts of the child and society that are embedded in public policy debates. Deepening the complexity of the problems, institutions to which we look for solutions are too often faced with conflicts that arise when the needs of the child are at variance with the needs of the institutions themselves. These dilemmas are central to understanding our failure to achieve adequate public policy solutions for children at risk.

Book SynopsisThe sexual abuse of children is an area of increasing concern to social services agencies, lawmakers, and the general public. Recent reforms of the legislation in this area have been influenced by the emerging field of children’s rights. Terrence Sullivan takes a critical look at the reforms and raises provocative questions about who is empowered by developments and who is not.The Canadian constitution potentially offers an important vehicle in advancing individuals rights. Sullivan reviews the emergence of child abuse and child sexual abuse as a ‘new’ object of social inquiry and regulation within the context of childhood sexuality, which has historically been subject to extensive regulation in the hand of professionals. He explores the rise of child sexual vulnerability on the public agenda, and tracks the role and influence of specialized professional knowledge in stimulating and steering legislative reform.Sullivan concludes that court decision

Book SynopsisThe child protective system (CPS), shaped by federal law forty years ago and run on the state and county levels in the United States, offered in utopian fashion the hope of preventing all possible child abuse or neglect. In response, legislators enacted a spate of vague laws that poorly defined such categories as abuse and neglect, and granted the CPS sweeping powers to intrude into families, often on the basis of nothing more than anonymous complaints about standard childrearing practices. This arrangement, which followed from the questionable assertion of the existence of a crisis of child abuse and neglect, became the basis in theory for the universal monitoring of American families that has resulted in the sharp curtailing of parental rights and responsibilities. With overreaching by local and state governments into family affairs, the current CPS has not only damaged untold numbers of families but also undercut the legitimacy of parental authority through the continuous threat to Trade ReviewAlong with prefatory and two appended amicus curiae briefs, this volume consists of six articles originally presented at a conference co-sponsored by the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) and the Catholic Social Workers National Association, held at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., April 2012. Krason is a co-founder of SCSS. The papers offer a review of the Mondale Act and a critique of 40 years of American law and governmental response to child abuse and neglect, and then consider family and parental rights, police interference with family relations, Fourth Amendment litigation, the effects of family structure on child abuse, and child welfare policy and ethical dilemmas — all in light of Catholic social teaching. * Book News, Inc. *

Covering technologies used by children aged two through to adulthood, it offers parents and professionals clear, evidence-based information about online harms and their effects and what they can do to support their child should they see, hear or bear witness to these events online.Catherine Knibbs, specialist advisor in the field, explains the issues involved when using online platforms and devices in family, social and educational settings. Examined in as non-traumatising a way as possible, the book covers key topics including cyberbullying; cyberstalking; pornography; online grooming; sexting; live streaming; vigilantism; suicide and self-harm; trolling and e-harassment; bantz, doxing and social media hacking; dares, trends and life-threatening activities; information and misinformation; aTrade ReviewCatherine has been involved in the cyberpsychology field of work for over 25yrs and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the forefront of this area. Her work provides a fascinating and informative perspective and details the challenges that, not just professionals, but anyone can face when dealing with these issues. She is able to observe and analyse the relevant facts and explains the problems to the reader, so they can fully appreciate and understand this complex work. As an Online Safety Professional, I follow Catherine's work very closely, and utilise the cross overs from her work into my own work, which greatly assists in the online protection of minors in today's world. Andrew Briercliffe - "Online Safety Professional" - experience in Law Enforcement, Education and Social MediaCath is versed in critical thinking and presents a clear path to categorise information, misinformation and disinformation in a sector where health and well-being are jam-packed with non-specialists. The resulting outcome of bad advice is that the developing child’s body can be impacted by the skewed knowledge of online ‘gurus’ giving out guidance that may well cause developmental and psychological harm.Movement, diet and body-based issues are rife amongst our young, with snake oil salespeople offering quick fixes. However, these pseudo-experts lack of awareness of our children’s current technological landscape and our young people’s social-media anxieties means the advice provided is ill-advised and, at worst, devastating. Our future generations deserve better and with my work looking to create more play opportunities for children that rely on less technology and sustainable real-world strategies to help with physical, emotional and mental well-being. It is excellent to collaborate with adults such as Cath, who labour to help adults understand the role they can play in creating safer online spaces for our kids.- Darryl Edwards, Movement Coach, author of the best-selling books "Animal Moves" and "My First Animal Moves", and a thought leader in creativity and innovation in fitness and health. Darryl developed the Primal Play Method® to inspire young and old to make physical activity fun. He blogs at PrimalPlay.com.As someone who works on the frontlines with Catherine Knibbs on the war on young people, she has nailed the chaotic weight of things battling for kids' attention, likes, clicks, follows, and time - but mostly end up doing huge damage to them in the process. Smart phones, social media, many of the so-called 'influencers' and less ethical brands have figured out there is huge profit in young people's low self-esteem, diminished well-being and faith that 'they alone' can fix it - with the 'they' often being bad advice, dodgy diets, dangerous exercise plan or a dependency on the filter and selfie culture that robs so much time and gives so much self-loathing in return. For all the parents, teachers, young people or just people who care about the future of young people - Catherine Knibbs' book is an essential read - it decodes all the modern mysteries and fads of the online world but also gives much needed tools to both protect your children - and you - from the many hostile forces they now have to contend with. - Chloe Combi, Author, Speaker, Columnist, Futurist, Host of 'You Don't Know Me.'Table of ContentsIntroduction. 1 Psychological games. 2 Trends, challenges and hoaxes. 3 Information, misinformation and disinformation. 4 Cyberbullying. 5 Cyberstalking. 6 Bodies, health and wellbeing. 7 Self-harm. 8 Professionals who harm. Book SynopsisThis groundbreaking volume destroys the most damaging beliefs about fathers. Using the most recent research, this pioneering work exposes these baseless beliefs and the toll they take on children’s relationships with their fathers, parents’ relationship with one another, and the physical and mental health of fathers and mothers.Trade Review"This pioneering work fills an important gap: For a long time we have been waiting for guidance based on verified data in order to be able to deal with parental-child relationships objectively, especially in cases of family breakdown." Jose Torres, Professor at University of Malaga"This is an extraordinary compendium of key research gathered into one place. It will be a critical resource for a wide variety of readers from college students to graduate school students to clinicians, to those involved in the courts with families." Patricia Papernow, psychologist, author, teacher, consultant, Director of Institute for Stepfamily Education"Grounded in a wide range of research and draws implications that interest a general audience on current topics. The book’s material has direct implications for public policy regarding family law, divorce, and child custody. Nielsen frames these issues in a clever and catchy manner that make the book an ideal choice for academic courses, with appeal to a much wider general audience." Richard Warshak, clinical and research psychologist and author“Nielsen argues that fathers are just as competent, devoted, and central to kids’ well-being as mothers. The author, a psychology professor at Wake Forest University, takes aim at the conventional wisdom that considers mothers the mainstays of child rearing and relegates fathers to a supporting role as breadwinners and child care assistants who can be dispensed with after a divorce. On the contrary, she asserts that dads are essential, stating that kids raised with their father in the home are healthier and better adjusted, have higher graduation rates, and are less prone to delinquency, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, and anxiety. The author cites a wealth of sociological statistics and scientific studies but also probes the cultural conventions we apply to fatherhood, exploring everything from the caricature of uncommunicative, emotionally clueless husbands in pop-psychology tomes like Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus to the parade of incompetent, absentee, and deadbeat dads in movies. She writes in a lucid, down-to-earth style that’s free of academic cant and replete with tart wisdom. Dads and moms alike will find much to ponder here. A fresh, eye-opening re-examination of the father’s role in the family, full of stimulating contrarian insights.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Table of Contents1 Fathers in America: Why we believe what isn't true—and why it matters 2 American fathers and children 3 Fathers don't matter—and the earth is flat 4 Fathers as parenting partners: Slouches on couches and other nonsense 5 Divorced dads: Dad dumped mom and worse 6 Subverting the stereotypes and mashing the myths

Book SynopsisNarratives of Childhood Domestic Violence explores young womenâs accounts of transitions to young adulthood after domestic abuse in childhood, from a psychological perspective. The book centres a dialogue about epistemic justice and how experiences of violence that are marginal, marginalised, and less easily understood through dominant discourses, can be listened to and heard. Taking a critical feminist psychological approach, Frances examines gendered and socio-culturally located narrative practices, arguing that narratives about change and transition in young adulthood after childhood domestic violence both re-inscribe societal narratives that can be constraining, as well as present stories of resistance and hope. The book draws attention to the difficulties of being heard and understood when articulating an experience that sits in tension with normative expectations and trajectories for families and children growing up within them. It also examines how tensions in st

Creating Safer Organisations offers a firm, accessible and engagine platform on which further work can build."
