Nova Science Publishers Inc Essential Oils: Historical Significance, Chemical
Book SynopsisThe use of essential oils by civilisations constitutes a common practice since antiquity. In earlier times, China, India and the Middle East used herbs and oils in cooking, cosmetics, medicine and in religious rituals. These substances come from a secondary metabolism of plants and are associated with several functions necessary for their survival, such as the defense against microorganisms, predators and attraction of pollinators. Essential oils are composed of a complex mixture of biologically active substances, lipophilic and volatile, and in most cases derivatives of terpene compounds and in a lower occurrence - phenylpropanoids. They have been long recognised for their medicinal uses: antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, insecticidal and their antioxidant properties. The increased interest in alternative natural substances is driving the research community to find new uses and applications of these substances. This book provides research on the historical significance, chemical composition and medicinal uses and benefits of essential oils. Some of the topics discussed include extraction methods of essential oils; an overview of the most relevant essential oil changes regarding plant phenology and plant development; the antibacterial properties of some essential oils; essential oils applications in agriculture; and the use of essential oils as additives in broiler diets.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Introduction to Multidisciplinary Science in an
Book SynopsisHigher science education is about preparing people to address the scientific and technological challenges of our times. The list of these challenges includes, but are not limited to, feeding the worlds growing population, improving the length and quality of lives on Earth, improving short- and long- distance communication and transportation, predicting of, adapting to, and mitigating of natural hazards, and exploring space to improve our lives on Earth and for the survival of our civilization. This book prepares students to understand and address these challenges because these challenges, even in most of their narrow focuses, transcend the current college curriculums or programs. The Earths climate change is an example of the narrow focus of the large topic of natural hazards. It spans almost all aspects of modern sciences, including biology, chemistry, and physics. Moreover, the span of these challenges may also be telling us that we have to rethink higher sciences education because the current splintering of science education into endless disciplines may not be the best or a unique way to prepare minds to address these challenges. We may be locking great young minds to a certain viewpoint forever, an unintended indoctrination. At least some universities and colleges must start moving away from the monolithic way of delivering higher science education or to create a multidisciplinary science as a separate program and hopefully unleash a new generation of super engineers and scientists who are speaking scientific language. Moreover, this approach may optimize the higher education time for some people.

Book SynopsisIn order to increase sustainability of chemical processes, a raw material change from conventional to renewable feedstocks is the key. This opens up numerous novel process concepts. A detailed conceptual design of all of these different pathways is expensive and time-consuming, since the mandatory simulations depend on pre-specified design decisions and commercial simulation software lack robustness. Hence, screening methodologies are required for an initial assessment of the processes. Existing screening methods are restricted to reaction or process design data known in literature, such that the integration of novel pathways requires simulation studies. This is impeded by limited data availability and the lack of profound property models.Process Network Flux Analysis is introduced as an optimization-based screening methodology to accelerate process development and improvement for existing and novel processes. The method systematically integrates reaction data with the select

Verlag G. Mainz Monoand Tetranuclear Complexes Featuring OSSO or
Book SynopsisWhereas tetradentate (OSSO)-type ligands mostly allow for the preparation of mononuclear transition metal complexes, lignads that feature two or more of the structurally related (ONNO)-type subunits may give access to multinuclear heterometallic complexes. +IV, +V and *VI stabilized by tetradentate (OSSO)-type ligands led to the development of a tris(ONNO)-type ligands revealed a new approach toward heterometallic 3d transition metal complexes that resolves the limitations of core/shell template directed synthesis and avoids metal cooperative effects resulting in magnetic interactions of the paramagnetic center and in enhanced catalytic activity in transformations of heterocumulenes with epoxides. This thesis further contributes to the field of mono- and tetranuclear metal complexes stabilized by (OSSO)- or tris(ONNO)-type ligands. Based on these ligands, the stractural, magnetic and electrochemical propeties of various complexes are reported.

Verlag G. Mainz Application of Manganese Pincer Complexes for
Book SynopsisOn the way towards sustainable and green chemistry, scientists found a key technology which allows chemical transformations to proceed with minimum waste generation and energy consumption. The key is transition metal catalysis which is also attractive from an economical point of view. At the end of 19th century, Alfred Werner defined basics of coordination chemistry which were significant for the development of transition metal catalysis. In the 1930s, the Oxo Process, in which olefins react with syngas to produce linear and branched aldehydes, was developed by Otto Roelen. The reaction is still widely used and allows to produce millions metric tons of oxo chemicals. A following milestone in transition metal catalysis occurred in the 1950s when the Wacker Process was developed. The reaction allows to oxidize olefins to aldehydes and ketones with the use of PdCl2 as catalyst. Many other reactions were developed involving transition metal catalysis, including important processes such

Verlag G. Mainz Ion Transport in HfO2
Book SynopsisIn this thesis the diffusion of anions and cations in HfO2 was investigated in detail. Furthermore, the conductivity of HfO2 was probed and approaches to interpret the results were presented. The diffusion of oxygen in dense ceramics of monoclinic HfO2 (m-HfO2) was studied by means of (18O/16O) isotope exchange annealing and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). All measured isotope profiles showed complicated behaviour in exhibiting two features: the first feature, closer to the surface, was attributed mainly to slow oxygen diffusion in an impurity silicate phase; the second feature, deeper in the sample, was attributed to oxygen diffusion in bulk m-HfO2. The activation enthalpy of oxygen tracer diffusion in bulk m-HfO2 was found to be ?HD* 0.5 eV. The diffusion of cations in m-HfO2 was studied with samples prepared by cooperation partners, utilising a low-temperature preparation method, atomic layer deposition, in order to produce non-equilibrium samples. These were then used i
