  • An Illustrated Brief History of Chinese

Shanghai Press An Illustrated Brief History of Chinese

Book SynopsisThis book provides a condensed, comprehensible, but complete overview of the history of Chinese porcelain.By studying the most notable characteristics of porcelain in different periods throughout history, it explores the evolution of the great kilns, and describes the influence of factors such as social and economic development, political change, and foreign cultures. Each one of these affected porcelain's shapes, uses, colors, styles, patterns, and other features in unique ways. An Illustrated Brief History of Chinese Porcelain explains the cultural implications and the aesthetic and philosophical concepts which underlie the porcelain we know today. The origins of Chinese porcelain lie as far back as the Shang (1600–1050BCE) and Zhou (1046–256BCE) dynasties. One of the treasures of Chinese civilization, porcelain was first fashioned in the five great kiln-sites at the beginning of the second millennium, then evolved to form the splendid blue-and-white of the Yuan, before reaching its apogee in the Ming (1368–1644AD) and Qing (1644–1912AD) dynasties. An Illustrated Brief History of Chinese Porcelain makes extensive use of archeological material from excavations at historic kilns and grave sites undertaken since 1949, as well as the results of new research. It presents readers with images of outstanding examples of different types of porcelain—including celadon, blanc de Chine, famille rose, and blue-and-white ware.

  • Getty Trust Publications The Ancestors of Christ Windows at Canterbury

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an illuminating look at some of the oldest stained glass - and most famous medieval paintings - in all of England. Eighty-six near life-size figures of the male ancestors of Christ once looked down on the choir and eastern extension of the medieval cathedral and priory church of Canterbury. Made of stained glass, the ancestors of Christ windows illuminated liturgical areas all year round. Dating from the 12th-century, the surviving windows from the series are among the oldest panels of stained glass in England, and are significant examples of what was at the time a relatively new art - monumental stained glass. This luminously illustrated book discusses the original context, iconographic program, and stylistic development of the windows, as well as exploring how the windows were perceived.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisCeramic petrography, the microscopic examination of the mineral content and structure within ceramic thin sections, reveals the origin and movement of pottery and sheds light on the technology of the artifact. Although used by archaeologists since the 1930s, ceramic petrography has been uncommon until recently. Integrative Approaches in Ceramic Petrography highlights new results from this field and incorporates it prominently within current archaeological work.Thirteen papers cover a broad spectrum of regional and temporal contexts. Case studies provide practicalexamples by combining petrography with scientific, ethnographic, and experimental methods. The varied usesof ceramic petrography and the insights it has generated illustrate the significance of this method for understandingpast societies. The volume’s conclusion provides an astute overview of the field.Trade Review“Advances the field by providing an anthology of different methodologies and different geographical areas.” —Leslie G. Cecil, associate professor of Anthropology, Stephen F. Austin State University “This groundbreaking volume with 15 contributions by 28 authors demonstrates the resurgence of ceramic petrographic analysis. Diverse essays geographically span the American Southwest to northern China, and 5,000 BCE-19th century CE. The introduction and final chapter summarize the status of current research. Essential, authoritative and compelling, this anthology emphasizes methodologies and new investigations elucidating broader anthropological questions.” —Charles C. Out of stock

Book SynopsisNorth Carolina's eighteenth and nineteenth-century Moravian potters were remarkable artisans whose products included coarse earthenware, slip-trailed decorated ware, Leeds-type fine pottery, press-molded stove tiles, figural bottles, toys, and salt-glazed stoneware. Silesian-born and German-trained potter Gottfried Aust was the first to arrive in Bethabara in 1755. After that, numerous apprentices of his carried on the trade in the state and beyond. Some apprentices rose to the rank of master potter. Aust's most successful protégé, Rudolph Christ, excelled in the creation of Queensware, faience, and tortoiseshell-glazed pottery. Swiss-born Heinrich Schaffner, one of several more Moravian master potters, is famously known for his "Salem smoking pipes." Today, museums and private collectors vigorously compete for scarce examples of North Carolina-made Moravian pottery. Every piece found and preserved is like a new paragraph added to the story of the art and mystery of pottery-making in one of the South's earliest settlements.

Chipstone Foundation Ceramics in America 2023

Book SynopsisThe 2023 volume ofCeramics in Americais filled with content of interest to students of American ceramics history. The articles cover a wide range of topics and regions, including ceramics made in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Virginia. Of particular importance is the analysis of a small porcelain snuff box from the so-called A-marked group of porcelains made in London ca. 1745 from china clay obtained in America's Cherokee Territory. A featured essay on the remarkable ceramics of John Wesley Carpenter offers for the first time an in-depth look at this nineteenth-century potter, who worked in the back country of North Carolina and Virginia. Several articles present thematic discussions about historic ceramics made and used to promote the abolition of slavery in both America and England. The use of ceramics to effect social change continues to this day, as is illustrated in the words and works of ceramic artist David Mack of Baltimore, Maryland.

Countryside Books The Boxford Mosaic: A Unique Survivor from the

Book SynopsisThe Boxford Mosaic has been described as the most spectacular and innovative Roman mosaic ever found in Britain. Yet it lay hidden beneath a Berkshire field for some 1,600 years until it was fully uncovered in the Summer of 2019. Dating from around 350 AD and set amid the ruins of a villa, the mosaic depicts tales of famous heroes from Greek mythology. Hercules slays the half-man, half-horse Centaur. Pelops wins the hand of a king's daughter by sabotaging the wheel linchpin of his racing chariot. And the handsome Bellerophon kills the fire-breathing Chimaera monster with the help of his flying horse Pegasus - a legend that became our very own St George and the Dragon. The full description of this artistic masterpiece and its excavation, by local enthusiasts working under professional supervision, is told here by the three who played key roles in the operation. JOY APPLETON is Chairwoman of the Boxford History Project. MATT NICHOL is a leading archaeologist with Cotswold Archaeology. ANTHONY BEESON is one of the UK's leading authorities on mosaics and Roman and Greek architecture. He is also the archivist of the Association for Roman Archaeology.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisJohn Ward (b.1938) has a longstanding reputation as one of Britain's foremost potters, and yet very little has been written about his manifold achievements. Authoritative and enlightening, this will be the first account of Ward’s life and work, tracing the evolution of his ideas and his practice as a potter and placing them critically within the history of British Studio Pottery. The qualities of Ward’s best pots are hard to define. As the late Emmanuel Cooper noted as long ago as 1996: “...the apparently contrasting qualities of drama and quiet reflection, is one of the most engaging aspects of his work. This sense of balance, of the tension between pushing and pulling, light and shade, movement and rest, makes Ward’s work distinctive, distinguished and intriguing.” Setting out to explore and define those distinctions - expressing what makes Ward’s pots compelling and historically significant - the potter's important artistic contribution will finally be expressed. Trade Review'John Ward is a unique figure in the history of studio ceramics. This is the long awaited, insightful and beautiful monograph that illuminates the range and depth of his art. It will bring an even greater audience to appreciate his remarkable subtlety and strength.' – Edmund de Waal'Carefully and thoughtfully produced, this insightful monograph is a must-have for admirers of Ward’s work but a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in contemporary studio ceramics.' – Helen Ritchie, Decorative Arts Society

British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara Canhasan Sites 2: Canhasan 1: The Pottery

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe excavations at Canhasan Höyök I in the Konya plain of central Turkey revealed a series of settlements running through the Chalcolithic period (c.5500-3000 BC). The pottery from the site, much of it of types previously unknown or not found elsewhere in stratified contexts, is of fundamental importance for an understanding of this period in Anatolia. In this volume, Dr French, the excavator of Canhasan and for many years director of the British Institute at Ankara, carefully and concisely presents both the plain and decorated wares, with detailed descriptions of their characteristic fabrics, shapes and decoration. There is a full catalogue of the best-preserved and most important pieces (which were registered finds), but a major feature of the volume are the drawings of over 2500 less well-preserved pieces, which illustrate all the characteristic shapes and types of decoration. A special feature of the study is a careful grading of the material in terms of chronological reliability. The author privileges the whole, or nearly whole, pots found on floors in each layer, as the only types which were certainly made at the time. Related pottery may be accepted as contemporary, but with less certainty, while unrelated wares must be treated with circumspection, for they may be either recycled from an earlier layer or intrusive from a later one. This rigorous methodology means that the Chalcolithic pottery provides a completely reliable relative chronology through the Chalcolithic period, and the volume will remain a basic reference for Near Eastern archaeology.Trade Reviewwe are fortunate to have Frenchs analysis of the pottery for this important site.' -- Bryn Mawr Classical Review Bryn Mawr Classical Review a daring and useful approach to assessing ceramics from archaeological sites,' -- Bibliotheca Orientalis Bibliotheca Orientalis

  • Manolo Valdés – in Glass

Anomie Publishing Manolo Valdés – in Glass

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor over half a century, Valencia-born, New York-based Manolo Valdés has been a prominent international figure in the arena of contemporary art, known for his work in the mediums of sculpture, painting, drawing and collage. In this striking and imposing publication, designed in close dialogue with the artist by Peter B. Willberg and produced in Italy, Valdés presents a body of thirty-five sculptures created in 2020 and 2021. Along with wood, alabaster, aluminium, steel and resin, the primary medium employed in this body of work is glass, following a significant and intense period of research and experimentation. The resulting works are engaging contemporary portrait busts that make reference to the history of modernist painting and sculpture, taking inspiration from imagery and objects by twentieth-century masters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Constantin Brancusi. Developing his ‘recipes’ for their fabrication – materials, processes, conditions and timings – with both care and flair, Valdés has created sculptural glass busts in a range of amber oranges, ruby reds, emerald greens, sapphire blues, and onyx blacks, all of which almost seem to glow with what Dr Kosme de Barañano, the book’s author, describes as ‘an inner light’.Barañano’s comprehensive and illuminating essay not only investigates aspects of the history of glass making and its use as a material by artists past and present, but also traces the evolution of the language and forms of Valdés’s glass and mixed-media works across a number of key exhibitions and bodies of work over the course of the past two decades. These include his monumental sculptures at the New York Botanical Garden in 2012 and his dramatic solo presentation in the Place Vendôme in Paris in 2016, both of which offered opportunities to see the artist’s large-scale sculptural works in outdoor settings. Discussing the significance of 'Cabezas' (heads) in his oeuvre, Barañano asserts: ‘These glass "Cabezas" are tremendously sombre and simple works from which emanates a profound silence.’This large-format publication, which is illustrated by specially commissioned photography by Tom Powel, documents many of the sculptures from different angles and by means of details, revealing not only the subtleties and qualities of the surfaces of the abstracted, humanlike glass heads, but also the curious and eclectic appendages that regularly appear to burst forth from them like unorthodox fascinators or eccentric jewellery, from nails and steel rods to glass or metal butterflies and wooden geometric forms. With a timelessness that speaks of civilisations long gone and a modernity that simultaneously seems to look to the future, Valdés has created a body of sculpture in glass that transcends time, touching on the metaphysical nature of the human mind and its outward manifestation in the physical world.Manolo Valdés (b.1942, Valencia) is one of the most significant post-war Spanish artists. A key member of the Equipo Crónica until 1981, in 1989 he moved to New York. Major solo exhibitions include the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Reina Sofía, Madrid, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Château Royale de Chambord, France.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisMalcolm D. Gutter has been forming his porcelain collection over several decades with a focus on early Meissen, particularly the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden. In addition to the porcelain works produced at Meissen, Augustus II avidly collected those imported from China and Japan. A Princely Pursuit reproduces many documented pieces from this royal collection, including both Meissen and Asian works. The Gutter promised gift exemplifies a significant range of early Meissen wares, including many examples of early red stoneware (Böttgersteinzeung) as well as numerous pieces created under Johann Höroldt’s (1696–1775) direction. A Princely Pursuit will serve as an important contribution to the field of porcelain studies, especially in its significance to San Francisco. Gutter’s entire collection of Meissen and related Asian porcelains has been promised to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the city he calls home and where he began collecting more than forty years ago. Through the Malcolm D. Gutter collection, the Legion of Honor will become a destination for the study of early Meissen porcelain, and the publication of this catalogue exemplifies this ongoing scholarship. A Princely Pursuit presents more than one hundred significant pieces from the collection of Malcolm D. Gutter, an avid collector of Meissen works of art. His collection represents exemplary works from the German manufactory, including especially the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a catalogue of church, chapel and monastery mosaic pavements discovered within the borders of Israel and the Palestinian Territories (Roman Palestine). Chronologically, it spans the early 4th to 8th centuries, the latter period seemingly designating the cessation of mosaic manufacture in early Christian edifices in Palestine based on current archaeological findings. Sites are arranged alphabetically and according to the four Roman provinces that encompassed the region, and to which it is believed each originally belonged. The primary name chosen for each site (in most cases) correlates with the site name used in the indispensable gazetteer Tabula Imperii Romani Iudaea Palaestina (1994), allowing for relatively simple site identification and cross-referencing. In order to simplify the mosaic design descriptions, the catalogue utilises a system of geometric pattern coding. For each site, a map reference is given for the Israel Grid, followed by a brief outline of its excavation or survey, a thorough description of the pavements including the coding system, inscriptions (if present), a commentary including proposed dates (if given) and bibliography. The indexes include a concise list of occurrences for each pattern code, figural designs and iconoclastic damage; for inscriptions, ecclesiastical titles, named mosaicists and cited provincial dating eras.
