  • Navy Board Ship Models

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Navy Board Ship Models

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom about the middle of the seventeenth century the Navy's administrators began to commission models of their ships that were accurately detailed and, for the first time, systematically to scale. These developed a recognised style, which included features like the unplanked lower hull with a simplified pattern of framing that emphasised the shape of the underwater body. Exquisitely crafted, these were always rare and highly prized objects-indeed, Samuel Pepys expressed a profound desire to own one-and today they are widely regarded as the acme of the ship modeller's art. Today examples form the highlights of collections across the world, valued both as art objects and as potential historical evidence on matters of ship design. However, it was only recently that researchers began to investigate the circumstances of their construction, their function, and the identities of those who made them. This book, by two curators who have worked on the world's largest collection of these models at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, summarises the current state of knowledge, outlines important discoveries, and applies this new-found understanding to many of the finest models in the collection. As befits its subject, _Navy Board Ship Models_ is visually striking, with numerous colour photographs that make it as attractive as it is informative to anyone with an interest in modelmaking or historic ships.

  • De Havilland Comet: The World's First Commercial

Pen & Sword Books Ltd De Havilland Comet: The World's First Commercial

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe world got a little smaller in July 1949 when the first jet-powered airliner took to the skies barely four years after the end of the Second World War. Not only was the de Havilland Comet 1 was a lot faster than previous airliners, it could fly higher and further. It was packed with new technology but, perhaps most importantly for those early passengers, it was a quiet, luxurious and even pleasant experience, something that could never be said for the noisy piston-engine aircraft that came before. The Comet s leadership in jet travel for the future was assured until aircraft began crashing. The first ones were put down to pilot error but two disastrous events in 1954 grounded the fleet and Britain s advantage over the rest of the world was lost. Boeing caught up with its ubiquitous 707 and the Comet was destined to become but a memory. However, rising from the ashes came a new Comet one that was bigger and more powerful than before and designed for completely different roles. Where the first Comets had provided an expensive and plush way to travel for the rich few, the new Comet 4s carried more passengers to a multitude of destinations inevitably becoming key carriers for the early package holidaymakers. At the same time they became vital strategic transports for the RAF as the British Empire receded. This book tells the full story of the world s first jet-powered airliner, from its remarkable beginnings, through its early flight trials programme to its entry into service. The type s military career is also covered, as is its construction; also included in this volume are details of the numerous variants produced and those still surviving as exhibits today. There are also twenty-four superb artworks by world-renowned aviation illustrator Juanita Franzi.

  • HMS Gannet: Ship and Model

Pen & Sword Books Ltd HMS Gannet: Ship and Model

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHMS Gannet, beautifully restored today at Chatham Historic Dockyard, is a fine example of the small 'colonial schooners' that were built and deployed in the second half of the nineteenth century to police Britain's great empire and enforce the peace of Pax Britannica. Launched at Sheerness in 1878 with her white Mediterranean livery and elegant clipper bow, she was the epitome of the colonial gunboat. In this new book by the well-known ship modeller Will Mowll, the design and history of _Gannet_ is outlined before the author takes the reader on a detailed photographic step-by-step exposition of the building of his 1/48 scale model of the ship. A particular feature of the model is the inclusion of the 2-cylinger compound steam engine with its three cylindrical boilers. Exquisitely detailed, with even the bunkered coal beautifully modelled, all the machinery is made visible by means of the removable deck. The author has therefore reconstructed a major feature of the ship which is no longer extant on the prototype at Chatham. All the information that a ship modeller might need is included here-hull construction and the coppering of the ship's bottom, the making of the ship's steam propulsion systems, the decks and decking, armament, steering gear, mast and yards and rigging, and even the furniture in the wardroom. No part of the ship is left hidden. Inspiring with the sheer quality of his workmanship, the author has brought beautifully to life another of Britain's great museum ships.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Large Scale Warship Models: From Kits to Scratch

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe majority of warship modellers work in smaller scales, most often based on plastic or resin kits. Many of these harbour ambitions to tackle something larger and more demanding, but are daunted by the challenge. The aim of this book is to persuade them that it not as difficult as it may seem, that they already possess the basic skills required, and that they can acquire any necessary new knowledge as they proceed. The discussion focuses on the journey from conventional plastic kits to questions of deciding on a subject; choosing a kit, semi-kit or build from scratch; what conventional kit building skills transfer - and how these conventional skills such as painting techniques and an eye for detail can be brought to large scale model building so that scale fidelity is not sacrificed but enhanced. Novel requirements like research, obtaining plans and sourcing material or fittings are all covered. The second part describes building methods, including the latest techniques like casting fittings in resin, and applies to both static and radio-controlled working models. All the colour photos were taken specifically to illustrate the points made in each chapter, so the book demonstrates as well as describes. It concludes with a gallery of superb models intended to inspire the would-be large scale warship modeller to take the plunge.

Book SynopsisLike a good general, a good wargamer should have an eye for the ground. Just as the nature of the battlefield plays a central role in real warfare, so miniature wargames are greatly enhanced by realistic terrain. Besides, when you've spent hundreds of hours collecting and painting your miniature armies, they surely deserve ground worth fighting for. Master terrain modeller Paul Davies takes the reader through the process of creating a visually appealing yet practical terrain system. First the techniques of making the basic landscape are explained, then a series of projects show how this can be adapted to suit different periods or geographic locations (eg European farmland or Sudanese desert). There are then detailed chapters on adding vegetation, buildings, roadways, trench systems etc. The clear, step-by-step instructions are clearly illustrated by numerous specially-taken photographs of the work in progress and Paul's inspirational finished pieces.Trade Review"In this 287-page hardback book, wargames terrain modeler Paul Davies, author of numerous magazine articles on the subject, takes the reader through the process of creating a visually appealing yet practical terrain over which miniature battles may be fought. The techniques involved in the making of a basic landscape are explained, such as terrain cloths and tiles, custom or sculpted terrain, and this is followed by a series of projects showing how this can be adapted to suit different periods and/or geographic locations. There are then numerous sections on adding rivers and ponds, islands cliffs and hills, trees, walls, fences and screens, hedges, gates, cultivated fields, roads, bridges, defenses and buildings. All these projects have step-by-step instructions and are illustrated with over 400 specially taken color photos, taking the reader through the various stages of construction to the finished model. There is no doubt that this is a practical and useful guide, both to the specific items which are featured, but also in general construction terms. The book should be well received by wargamers and diorama builders alike. Recommended."--Military Modelling

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Tiger I: German Army Heavy Tank: Eastern Front,

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Tiger I tank, probably the most famous German armoured vehicle of the Second World War, might have been a war-winning, break-through weapon if it had been produced in sufficient numbers and if it had been introduced earlier on the Eastern Front, before the balance of strength had tipped towards the Soviet Union. At the Battle of Kursk there were not enough Tigers to make a decisive difference and thereafter the Tiger was forced to play a mainly defensive role as the Wehrmacht struggled to withstand the advances of the Red Army. And it is this period in the Tiger tank's short history that Dennis Oliver concentrates on in this, his third book on the Tiger in the TankCraft series. He uses archive photos and extensively researched colour illustrations to examine the tanks and units of the German army's heavy panzer battalions. A large part of the book showcases available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of the Tigers of 1943.

The Celts of Gaul and Northern Italy, who sacked Rome itself, the British who repulsed Julius Caesar and resisted later occupation, the Germanic tribes along the Rhine and the fearsome falx-wielding Dacians on the Danube, all proved worthy foes of the legions. If you are raising your own army to defy the might of Rome, Andy Singleton will help you get them ready for battle with ease. The emphasis is on achievable results and practical advice to get your army painted and ready for gaming in a reasonable time frame, and achieve a fine collection that will look great on the shelf or table. The trusted contributors include Roger Schroeder, Lora Irish and Jack Kochan. Compiled from the best tips and tricks from the pages of "Woodcarving Illustrated", this guidebook provides woodworkers with all they need to know to create a safe and organised workshop and prepare and employ various tools. Essays and instruction from such trusted contributors as Roger Schroeder, Lora Irish and Jack Kochan share everything about mallets, v-tools and getting the maximum life out of carving tools. Also included are step-by-step instructions explaining the principles of sanding, finishing, gluing, clamping, and much more. The woodcarver's budget is also addressed, in such chapters as 'Poor Man's Dust Collector'.Trade ReviewNone of liS in the woodworking centre would claim to be carvers and my own experience is limited to two and a half rocking horscs mainly made llsing an arobtec and powcr file. The half represents a half finished project which must be completed for Christmas. However, as we stock a range of carving tools and timbers we are frequently asked, especially by beginners what tools they should buy and how to sharpen them. With this in mind I have been searching for some time for a book =~that covers this and I believe that this recent addition to GMC's library meets this criteria. The book is an American publication but that represents no problem as tools and techniques are common both sides of the pone!. However, the same cannot be said for machining publications! This book addresses what every woodcarver needs, sharp tools, be it European-style carving knives or carving tools, organising your carving area and other equipment necessary to practice this hobby. It is 110t intended to be a proper manual, although it does cover the manufacture of many simple holding devices, but is a very Illuch 'how 10 keep tools razor sharp etc' publication. Other items covered are glues, clamps finishing of projects, workshop organization and much more. Colour photographs are excellent and now having read the book I certainly am bener informed on tools, equipment required and how to use them. I know from personal experience how mallY Woodturners become disillusioned because no one has taught them how to sharpen tools correctly ancl I suspect the same can be said of woodcarvers. A book I would recommend to anyone setting out all this fascinating hobby and at this time of the year a great Christmas present. Mike SandellsA WOODCARVER'S GUIDE TO SHARPENING TOOLS AND SETTING UP SHOP, from the editors of Woodcarving Illustrated magazine, is a collection of articles to help woodcarvers set up their workshop, keep their tools sharp and organized, and make efficient use of their space. It offers tips and techniques from carvers Roger Schroeder, Lora Irish, Jack Kochan and others. There's a projects section for making a tool holder, dust collectors, and carving benches and stands. For beginners, there's a chapter setting up a workshop on a budget. Carving tools, from knifes to mallets, and finishing techniques are also covered.Usually when the editors of a highly respected magazine get together to publish a full book on a subject you can be sure that every detail will be covered. This certainly holds true in this book from Woodcarving Illustrated. Nothing has been left out. The authors even cover painting and what types to use and when your carving project is complete there is a section on how to photograph it. Carving with dull tools can be both dangerous and tedious. Correct methods of sharpening those odd-shaped carving tools are covered at length. The book also covers dust management, tool selection, carving jigs and a myriad of other carving related topics that will prove to be an asset to all carvers. Keep this one close to your carving bench it is the perfect carver's reference book. This fantastic book covers useful techniques on setting up a workshop with the woodcarver in mind, focusing on essentials such as safety, making your own worKbench and vices, dust extraction, using adhesives, and the low-down on abrasives. From here we move on to a comprehensive guide on the tools every carver needs from gouges, knives, files, drawknives and mallets. Plus there is a useful section on making depth guides for relief carving, and even how carving tools. And to round things off nicely, we are treated to sharpening and finishing methods, plus a basic look at how best to photograph your work. This is a great book to introduce the beginner to everything they need to know about carving. This is a fantastic look at setting up a workshop with the woodcarver in mind.

Book SynopsisThis title captures the spirit of this beloved story with his folk art inspired characters. Noah may not have had detailed plans when he set out to build the Ark, but readers will learn how to carve a beautiful 19 piece Noah's Ark set with well-known carver Shawn Cipa. At the heart of the book are projects beginning with detailed plans for building the Ark. Step-by-step carving and painting instructions are included for Noah and the lion. Detailed patterns followed by photographs and carving tips are included for Noah's wife and 15 types of animals. Many animals featured in the book are presented in two positions (to create the pairs of animals aboard the Ark).Trade ReviewThe song, "If I were a carpenter", keeps running through my head, except with a little editing of the words ."If I were a woodcarver" - oh what a great book to have!! Not only does the book provide detailed instructions (including wonderful photos) to carve 14 different "two by twos" animals, Noah, and "Mrs. Noah", but it also includes patterns for the ark, which doesn't rely on carving for its creation. What I really love about this book is that it can be used not only for the ark project but for farm animals or animals in general. I also see a possibility for creating "rough cut" figures as well as ones with details such as manes or eyes. What child (or adult, really) wouldn't love any of these options?! My Ratings of The Book Layout and Appearance: Beautiful photos nicely laid out with the instructions. Thumbs Up! Instructions: Very clear how-to instructions, projects. (Ex. the lion has 56 photos for the carving process and 16 photos of the finishing process. Thumbs Up! Projects Selection: One project that can be adapted for many purposes. Great. Inspiration: Once you have the hang of carving animals and people - the sky is the limit! Thumbs Up! Overall: Thumbs Up!What a delightful book! This book by Shawn Cipa contains full carving and finishing instructions for Noah, the ark itself and 14 pairs of animals from the simple house cats, doves, to owls sheep, toucans and elephants and more. Cipa covers all the details like in which direction the wood grain should be. He shows you in detail how to build the famous ark. Select the paint and color types and how to apply them. The animals (in pairs) are described in great detail. This is the perfect book to use to start a perfect Christmas gift for those young ones on your list.Incorporating carving patterns and tips as well as the Biblical story of the epic Flood, and its many interpretations around the world, Woodcarving Noah's Ark by Shawn Cipa is aimed at woodcarvers of beginning skill level and up who want to create a Noah's Ark set in a folk art style.
