Book SynopsisFollowing the success of Seaforth's Ship Craft series, this new strand of Flight Craft titles are sure to appeal to a broad demographic of model makers. With profiles of the various craft accompanied by a descriptive narrative history of the various types, this volume combines practical information with reflective historical analysis, making for a visually rich volume sure to appeal to both sides of the market. This volume deals primarily with the three principal attack helicopter types of the present-day Russian Army. The Mil MI-24 'Hind' - otherwise known as 'the Flying Crocodile' - has been produced in large numbers with many versions and variants developed. It has been supplied to a host of countries and seen considerable combat action in conflicts both in the Soviet Union and abroad. It still forms the backbone of army aviation in Russia. At the forefront of national exposure, this is a particularly pertinent inclusion in a volume such as this. The Mil-28 is a more contemporary type and is broadly the equivalent of the McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache. Again, this is a popular type and fans of the craft will find much of interest here, whether they are curious to expand their historical knowledge or eager for design details in a model-making context. Finally, the Kamov Ka-52 'Alligator' - NATO name 'Hokum-B' - is in service with the Army and entering service also with the Russian Navy. Another exciting craft, its inclusion in this volume and the spotlight afforded it by Gordon are both well deserved. Well-illustrated histories and structural analyses are supplemented with detailed descriptions of the various plastic scale model kits which have been released, along with commentary concerning their accuracy and available modifications and decals. This level of detail and insight is sure to prove invaluable to a wide community of model-makers, both at home and overseas.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAimed at both the beginner and more experienced modeller, this is a guide to the design, planning and creation of realistic models in 1:285 and 1:32 scales. Covering British, French and German trenches of the Western Front, this book includes the different construction, materials and repair methods used during the conflict. Each chapter includes the historical background, together with step-by-step instructions. With over 300 photographs, this book includes: why trenches were a necessity to save lives and how they adapted through the war; how to build models of British 'ideal' and typical trenches, a wet soil trench, improved shell hole, front line dugout, tunnels and mines, and a hospital tent. Construction advice is given for typical French and German trenches, together with a reversed German trench (modelled under British control) and a German concrete bunker. The creation of artillery models, realistic groundwork and plants is covered along with perfecting fine details such as tools, clothes, mess tins, shaving equipment, cigarette packets and letters from home. Finally, there is a guide to visiting the trenches today, a trench glossary and useful measurements at 1:32 scale.Trade ReviewThe skill and detail in Andy's models is an absolute delight, and he shares his skills in a host of well explained hints and tips of how to build your own WW1 trench models, adding the lovely WW1 Tommy's War figures, plus doing some straightforward conversions with them as well. You will also gain a greater understanding of the way the famous trench systems of the Western Front were constructed by the 3 main nations involved, Britain, France and Germany. Definitely one I'd recommend. -- Robin Buckland * Military Model Scene *Wonderfully presented, great pictures, background information and tips. My congratulations to Andy Belsey, I say you've created a gem. * Tommy's War Modellers Group *A very good book for anyone interested in this conflict. The construction of every type of work on the Western Front is presented in great detail. This then gives instruction on how to achieve the same result. The illustrations are superb and th whole book is well worth a place on the shelf. Brilliant publication. -- Anthony Kirkham * Customer Review *Excellent title, packed with information & good-quality photographs, & laid out in an easy to read format. Step-by-step descriptions of all the vignettes included, & tools, techniques & colour guides. Highly recommended! " -- Chris Oldfield * Customer Review *This fascinating book has a somewhat misleading title that doesn't do it full justice. While the ostensible subject is modelling this is, in fact, a deeply researched and highly informative study of trenches and field fortifications on the Western Front during World War 1 more generally. The author is, he tells us, 'a modelmaker who enjoys history' and his skill both as a modelmaker and as a historian is evident throughout....One of the best modelling books I have read this year and the historical research that underpins it really makes it a book that deserves to be on the shelf of everyone with an interest in World War I. Highly recommended. -- David Grummitt, reviewer Military Modelcraft International * Military Modelcraft International *I have had the great good fortune of working with archaeologists excavating British and German trenches on the Western Front in both France and Belgium. This led to the opportunity to work with film directors such as Sam Mendes and Stephen Speilberg to build trench locations for films such as '1917' and 'War horse. Andrew Belsey's book 'Modelling World War 1 Trench Warfare' came as a revelation. Drawing on unimaginable skill in creating miniatures and backed by in-depth research his book is a 'must have' volume for modellers, but will be a useful guide for armchair historians of the period and battlefield tourists. It should be on your book shelf or better still in your car as you tour the battlefield where, very largely, the trenches are now the 'battlefield beneath our feet'. -- Andy Robertshaw, Battlefield Partnerships * Battlefield Partnerships Ltd *

V & A Publishing Grinling Gibbons and the Art of Carving

Book Synopsis'David Esterly's handsome book on Gibbons has been republished by the V&A with sumptuous pictures' Laura Freeman, The Times, 14th August 2021 Reissued to mark 300 years since the death of Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721), this study views the work of the greatest of decorative woodcarvers from the perspective of a fellow carver, the late David Esterly. Grinling Gibbons is famous for giving wood "the loose and airy lightness of flowers." His flamboyant cascades of lifelike blossoms, fruits, foliage, birds and fish dominate English interiors of the late seventeenth century. They are among the glories of Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, and St. Paul's Cathedral, as well as Badminton, Burghley, Petworth, and other great country houses. A contemporary of Christopher Wren and of the diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, Gibbons was part of the colourful world of Restoration England. His discovery by Evelyn in a tumble-down cottage near the River Thames was followed by a presentation to King Charles II, who rejected his early sculptural work. Gibbons responded by inventing his spectacular style of decorative carving. He was then rediscovered, reintroduced to the king, and launched into a triumphant career. After setting Gibbons in historical context, David Esterly's ground-breaking approach allows us to understand the process by which these exuberant carvings were created and how their forms reflect the organization of Gibbon's workshop. Esterly, a professional woodcarver who restored some of Gibbons' most important carvings, shares his unique knowledge of the layering process by which Gibbons built up such masterpieces as the Cosimo panel or the elaborate overmantels at Hampton Court Palace. Specially commissioned photographs show these carvings in a disassembled state, revealing the secrets of their construction. Esterly also discusses Gibbons' formidable carving techniques, and his tools, workshop practice, materials, and finishing are described in detail. This generously illustrated volume will have a special appeal for carvers as well as for those interested in seventeenth-century interiors and the decorative arts.Trade Review'David Esterly's handsome book on Gibbons has been republished by the V&A with sumptuous pictures' Laura Freeman, The Times, 14th August 2021Table of ContentsPreface -- Foreword -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Part I Origins -- 1. • Rigging Period Ships Models: A Step-by-step Guide

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Rigging Period Ships Models: A Step-by-step Guide

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe rigging of period ship models is the most complex task which any modeller has to take on, for an eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile on mile of rigging, more than 1,000 blocks, and acres of canvas. To reduce this in scale, and yet retain an accurate representation, is an awesome undertaking. This now classic work untangles the complex web, and, using some 400 drawings, the author shows clearly how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards and sails. Each drawing deals with only one particular item so that it can be seen clearly in isolation. The lead of a particular halliard, the arrangement of a bracing line, these and every other detail is depicted with startling clarity. Based on the author's research of numerous eighteenth-century models, each one with its contemporary rigging still extant, the information is both meticulous and accurate. The remarkable visual immediacy and clarity of this work makes it truly unique and no modeller of period ships can afford to be without it at his side. In addition, the book is a 'must-have' practical reference work for all those involved in the rigging and repair of historic ships.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisEverything the ship modeller needs to know about building a famous warship Numerous detailed plans and colour illustrations Focuses on very popular modelling subjects which are represented by a wide selection of kits The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, using scale plans to highlight differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers, then moves to an extensive photographic survey of either a high-quality model or a surviving example of the ship. Hints on building the model, and on modifying and improving the basic kit, are followed by a section on paint schemes and camouflage, featuring numerous colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings. The strengths and weaknesses of available kits of the ships are reviewed, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. For the first volume in this series, the author has chosen the German 'pocket battleships' of WW2, the best-known of which was the Graf Spee of Battle of the River Plate fame. This innovative and infamous class of surface raiders has long been a popular subject for ship modellers, many manufacturers producing kits of the Graf Spee and the rather different Admiral Scheer and Lutzow. This book will show ship modellers how to turn their kits into something really special, but its unparalleled level of visual information will also appeal to the more general warship enthusiast. Roger Chesneau is a lifelong ship modeller and author of numerous naval books, including Ship Models in Plastic.

  • Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone & Granite

ACC Art Books Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone & Granite

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSurprisingly, this is the first book to be devoted to British Ironstone China and the related stone china and granite ceramic bodies. Yet they are as important in their way as the well-known, highly respected and well documented English creamwares or indeed bone china itself. Initially, the ironstone-type bodies were introduced - like most European ceramics, to emulate, rival and undersell the vast and popular importation of Oriental porcelains. Not only did the ironstone manufacturers succeed in this ideal but they progressed to take over the trade, develop new markets and supply the world with inexpensive but durable tableware. In the middle and latter half of the nineteenth century the British potters won markets undreamed of by the pioneers in the trade. The major manufacturers such as Mason and Spode produced superbly potted, richly decorated, ironstone or stone china table services and ornamental goods. Yet perhaps more importantly the smaller firms concentrated on less expensive utilitarian objects that were shipped to all parts of the world for everyday use. A large part of the world, therefore, would have eaten off or drunk from British ironstone type wares at this time.

ACC Art Books English Dry-bodied Stoneware: Wedgwood &

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEnglish dry-bodied stoneware was the ultimate ceramic expression of the neoclassical wave which erupted in England and on the Continent in the mid-eighteenth century. Initially basalt commanded the scene, with its imposing black stoneware forms imitating Greek vases. However, it was Wedgwood's invention of the jasper body which was to be the tour de force associated with his name. Wedgwood's jasper vases, purchased by gentry and nobility alike, were soon imitated by a myriad of potters. This book is the first to explore the vast subject of English dry-bodied stoneware with discussions on the antecedents of the eighteenth century neoclassical wares, the red stonewares of the seventeenth century, as well as the other bodies produced by Wedgwood and his contemporaries: caneware, white felspathic stoneware and, of course, the flagship of the Wedgwood name, jasper. The authors have, for the first time, utilised Wedgwood's surviving sales records from 1774-1794 and these have made it possible to allow for more specific dating of body types and forms as they correspond to the Wedgwood Shapes Books. Three hundred and fifty black and white illustrations with seventy-five colour plates, many shown here for the first time, provide an invaluable guide to the identification of these wares. Detailed research into the more than sixty other potteries concerned with the production of these handsome, ornamental and useful stonewares, makes this the most comprehensive reference book ever produced on the subject.

Book SynopsisFrom the 16th century until well into the 18th century, the commedia dell'arte, a popular Italian type of improvised comic theatricals, cast its spell on a large and diverse audience. Here an exuberant joy of living was reflected in a portrayal of all aspects of life exaggerated with pomposity and humour. No medium was better suited than precious porcelain to immortalise the vivacious performance of the comedians on the stage, let alone surpass their exaltation: No other subject produced a similar symbiotic relationship between the downright expressionist sculptures executed by the porcelain modellers and their heightening with brilliant colours by the porcelain painters in their astounding depiction of the costumes. Still today, these luxurious creatures enthral the observer with the splendour of the Baroque, with that particular joie de vivre of a grand poque. Delighted, we enter a bygone world where to enjoy life was the highest good. This publication is the first comprehensive survey of the commedia dellarte as a subject of the ceramic arts. Almost 400 objects from more than 45 European manufactories cover the period from the 18th to the 20th century.

Arnoldsche Goldscheider: History of the Company and Works

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGoldscheider, a Viennese factory (est 1885), soon sped to the top of European ceramics makers. Figures and vessels of faience and terracotta as well as bronze and alabaster, all of top quality in respect of form and workmanship, were created in the Historicist, Jugendstil and Art Deco period styles. A crucial factor was collaboration with distinguished sculptors and ceramicists of the day - including Demetre Chiparus, Walter Bosse and Josef Lorenzl - who were responsible for a great many of the Goldscheider designs. This success story was quashed by National Socialist aryanisation in 1938: the Goldscheider family was forced to emigrate, the firm was sold and the new proprietor was unable to sustain the high aesthetic quality standard. The Goldscheider brothers did manage to open new ceramics businesses while in exile in the US and England and Walter Goldscheider even returned to Vienna after the Second World War to resume his post as managing director of his old firm; however, in the 1950s the great ceramics tradition of this venerable Viennese business ended when it was sold to the German Carstens company.

Book SynopsisThe Hinder/Reimers Collection - which has been owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1993 - is one of the most important collections of modern ceramics in Germany. It was built up from the early 1950s through the combined efforts of Jakob Wilhelm Hinder (1901-1976) and Lotte Reimers (* 1932). The focus of this large collection is on West German ceramics from the 1950s to about 1990. Since the mid-1970s it has been enlarged by Lotte Reimers to include outstanding works from outside Germany. These 1,587 objects provide insights into the crucial trends and stylistic movements in art ceramics after the Second World War as represented by the most distinguished ceramicists of the day. Featuring explanatory texts and colour illustrations, the present publication presents the entire collection and, therefore, goes beyond the scope of Ceramics in Germany 1955-1990. The Hinder/Reimers Collection, published in 1997, which dealt with only a selection of works from the collection. The new publication, on the other hand, draws on the Hinder/Reimers Collection to survey the broad field of developments in studio ceramics in the latter half of the 20th century in western Germany while looking well beyond the borders of Germany. Text in English and German.
