Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Change Laboratory for Teacher Training in Entrepreneurship Education: A New Skills Agenda for Europe
Book SynopsisThis open access book illustrates a new type of formative intervention for in-service teacher training in entrepreneurship education. The book describes a Change Laboratory and shows how teachers and workshop assistants develop the idea of a multidisciplinary project entailing the design of a self-service and parking lot in a dismissed area close to the city centre. The multidisciplinary project is taken as example of how an idea is debated and turned into collective action and change, the very essence of initiative and entrepreneurship. The Change Laboratory thus increases the participation of students, teachers and stakeholders in the school towards a new curriculum through the implementation of a multidisciplinary project connecting school with the world outside and working life. The book features a foreword by Luke Pittaway, USASBE Entrepreneurship Educator of 2018. The manuscript discusses key concepts of Cultural Historical Activity Theory’s Change Laboratory as a formative intervention in a coherent and accessible manner. Beyond that it carefully illustrates how the Change Laboratory and its principles of double stimulation and ascending from the abstract to the concrete can be used as a theory of change to address one of the difficult and new demands of the European Union’s New Skills Agenda. The author takes the reader through the expansive learning journey and uses strong evidence to show how a new object can be developed, and how associated tensions and contradictions can be surfaced and tackled by actors with a partially shared object, and how a new concept can be formed and enriched through implementation and reflection in a manner that generates collective transformative agency. (Reviewer)This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 654101.Table of ContentsChapter 1. The research hypothesis.- Chapter 2. The assessment of entrepreneurial education.- Chapter 3. The Change Laboratory in theory.- Chapter 4. The Change Laboratory in practice.- Chapter 5. Participants’ view on the multidisciplinary project.- Chapter 6. Reflecting on the expansive learning process.- Chapter 7. Conclusions. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Employment for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome
Book SynopsisMost people with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (NLD) or Asperger Syndrome (AS) are underemployed. This book sets out to change this. With practical and technical advice on everything from job hunting to interview techniques, from 'fitting in' in the workplace to whether or not to disclose a diagnosis, this book guides people with NLD or AS successfully through the employment mine field. There is also information for employers, agencies and careers counsellors on AS and NLD as 'invisible' disabilities, including an analysis of the typical strengths of somebody with NLD or AS, and how to use these positively in the workplace. Practical information and lists of career resources are supported by numerous case studies to inspire and advise. An essential resource for people with NLD or AS seeking or in employment and their existing or potential employers.Trade ReviewThis book is very suitable for people with Asperger syndrome who are conducting their job search independently or semi-independently, and who are interested in finding a career, not just a job. The author herself has a Non-Verbal Learning disorder and a large part of the book is devoted to contributions from other people with Non-Verbal learning disorder of Asperger syndrome, describing their experiences of employment. The later chapters look in depth at the issues, and provide lots of information and advice on the application procedure and dealing with your employers. Interestingly, the author recommends non-disclosure to employers, and instead suggests being honest about yourself and how you are without giving people labels. This is definitely a book for people who want to be taken seriously. -- Asperger Information.netEmployment for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome or Non-Verbal Learning Disability is the best book I have read on AS/NLD and career issues. I also highly recommend it for the parents and other family members of people with AS/NLD, educators, vocational rehabilitation personnel, mental health professionals, employers, and even the general public. It is essential that more people learn about AS and NLD, and on how both disorders affect employment. Hopefully in the future, the prognosis for those with Asperger's Syndrome and Nonverbal Learning Disorder in the workplace will be more positive. This book is the first step on that journey. -- Asperger's Association of New England NewsletterTable of ContentsIntroduction. NLD and AS: Descriptions, Differences and Similarities. Part I. It doesn''t tell you to sell yourself, get out there, impress with power dressing or to have an elevator speech. Getting noticed doesn''t have to mean over-selling. Over the course of this book, you will discover exciting research, positive psychology and advice from a range of experts that will help you make an authentic impact. By stepping just to the edge of your comfort zone, you will learn to project yourself onto the world of work. From personal influencing skills to presentations, this book decodes sTrade ReviewJohn Lees has re-written the rules on everything you thought you knew about successful self-projection, networking and effective communication. -- From the Foreword by Sarah Willingham of BBC’s Dragons’ DenThe Success Code is a pragmatic and insightful guide to building reputation and impact that anyone can learn from - even those not in the least bit inclined to self-promote. From communication tips to networking advice, the exercises are sufficiently stretching so there is no hiding behind what 'feels natural'. Written in a manner that helps the reader challenge and reframe some of their anxieties or prejudices about how they approach building their personal brand, the book builds confidence as well as skills. -- Penny de Valk, Managing Director, Penna Talent PracticeThis book is packed with helpful facts, insightful quotes and practical tips. The real appeal for me is the refreshing honesty with which John approaches a topic that many struggle with. He explains that "self projection" is an important and often misunderstood concept, and we can all improve if we properly plan, prepare and practice. I have never met a successful person who has not benefitted from making helpful contacts and yet, from my experience, most people do not understand how to go about forging strong relationships with the right people. Rightly, in my opinion, the book stresses the pitfalls for anyone focused upon self promotion and, instead, demonstrates that those who show genuine interest in others will ultimately be the people that we wish to approach and keep in touch with. -- Ian Nicholas, Chief HR Officer, REED Specialist Recruitment LtdDo you want to succeed in your career but cringe at the thought of networking, self-promotion and elevator pitches? This book is for you. The good news is, most influence doesn't come from elevator pitches; it's not about conveying information. Influence comes from building relationships. John Lees reminds us that the impression we make matters, and suggests small positive changes that will help other people remember the best of who we are. -- Jonathan Winter, Founder of The Career Innovation Company and author of The Conversation GapThe Success Code is the book for people who want to promote themselves but are aghast at the idea of coming across like an over-confident salesman in a shiny suit. It's a career dilemma that affects us all: we know we need to put ourselves forward at work, but many of us find the idea of being pushy and networking mortifying. John Lees offers a workable, practical solution. It's self-promotion without the self-regard. John Lees is one of my favourite interviewees. He is an inexhaustible well of pithy, practical and sometimes surprising careers advice. -- Rhymer Rigby, freelance journalist and author. His work appears regularly in The Financial Times and The TelegraphIf you believe digital media is for show offs, not people like you. If you know you should network but don't. If you are told you need to have a personal brand but find the idea distasteful. If you would rather climb the stairs than get in the lift to do an elevator pitch, then buy this book. John Lees is not exhorting you to be different from who you are, he is alongside you encouraging you to succeed by being the best authentic version of you. It's a refreshingly different message. -- Dr Carole Pemberton, Coaching to Solutions, Executive coach and authorThis book identifies a key issue at work today. Relationships and interpersonal skills are critical to success but not everyone naturally feels comfortable with how they are 'supposed' to behave. John's book helps you deal with this in a really simple, practical and genuine way. Lots of useful insights and tips. A great resource in aiding your development or someone in your team who is struggling to fill their potential. -- Gordon McFarland - HR Director - Global Professional ServicesSuccinct, well structured, and very much of the real world, The Success Code is founded on good research yet is eminently accessible. This book is for those people who want to progress but don't want to sacrifice their sense of self, who want to amplify who they really are rather than pretending to be something they're not. This isn't a book that berates you and badgers you, it's a book that takes you by the hand and guides you to understanding, and then via understanding, into action. -- Kathleen Smith, Business Services Director, the Serocor GroupIf you dread the thought of 'networking' or 'selling yourself' but want to progress in your existing job and/or future career then this is the book for you. It is full of practical advice and tips and will help you find your voice and achieve success in an authentic way. -- Zoe Shackle, HR Director AMC Networks International

Nova Science Publishers Inc Science Organizations and Careers: Essential
Book SynopsisWhat can one life teach about the unfolding of opportunities into developing careers? From a 20th century social scientist at the forefront of science education and science policy who transitioned between positions in universities, federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations, we learn 21st century lessons. Daryl Chubin speaks to students, educators, and program directors about demographic changes, forms of scholarship, the functions of community, and marginality as an analytical perspective on the contexts of careers. As physicist-historian Thomas Kuhn asserted in his 1977 book, The Essential Tension, a prerequisite for making progress in science is the need to preserve an essential tension between tradition and innovation. Similarly, one beholds "essential tensions" when looking in on organizations, policies, and careers. As a white man studying the underrepresentation of women and persons of color in science and engineering, Chubin by definition was on the outside, different from his subjects while straddling a range of professional roles. He asks: What are the advantages and disadvantages of an outsider perspective? How should advocacy emerge from analysis? How do organizations capitalize on "difference"? If diversity, equity, and inclusion are valued, how does this change the way staff views its work, workforce, and place in the national culture? Science Organizations and Careers illustrates that social science differs from natural science and engineering. Each has its methods, norms, and heroes, but social science looks in and is parasitic on scientists and engineers-administrators in research institutions, scholars, elected officials, and educators at all levels of sophistication. These have been Chubin's subjects, colleagues, and conundrums. They have shaped him, bent him toward their view, educated, alienated, and applauded him. Readers, too, will have their own characters, organizations, and ambivalence with which to cope in the contradictions of their careers. This book helps to make sense of it all.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments; Prologue; In Sequence; In Context ; On Difference ; The NSF I Knew; Public Policy and the Evaluation of Talent; Three for the Show; What Is Scholarship?; Contradictions of a Career; On Talking with Strangers; Epilogue; Index.
