Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG IAEA Atlas of Cardiac PET/CT: A Case-Study

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book presents a wide portfolio of examples of positron emission tomography coupled with computer tomography (PET/CT) studies in various cardiac conditions in order to provide a rationale for the implementation of this technology in an array of clinical conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are a major contributor to premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are particularly affected by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with more than 75% of all CVDs deaths occurring in these countries. For this reason, target 3.4 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda aims at a 30% reduction in premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which include CVDs, by 2030. Among CVDs, ischemic heart disease (IHD) plays an important role and, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), it was responsible for 15.96% of global deaths in 2017. Between 2000 and 2017, the number of IHD deaths worldwide increased by 0.26% per year. Several imaging tools help to non-invasively diagnose, stratify risk and guide management in cardiac disease. They include nuclear cardiology techniques, using either SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) or PET/CT. While myocardial imaging with SPECT has been fully embraced by the cardiology community and is widely available worldwide, PET/CT introduction has been slower, due not only to its higher costs, but also to the limited availability of PET/VCT scanners, mostly utilized for oncological applications. This book is an invaluable tool for nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists and radiologists.Table of ContentsPreface1. TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR CARDIAC PET/CT2. Book SynopsisNuclear cardiology is one of the most widely used non-invasive techniques for the assessment of coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular conditions. It has proved to be a cost effective tool for the evaluation and management of cardiac patients and usually has a decisive role for diagnosis, prognosis and risk stratification. In particular, radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is used extensively worldwide for the evaluation of known or suspected coronary artery disease, with an estimated 15–20 million procedures performed annually. This publication provides a detailed analysis of all the steps involved in the delivery of nuclear cardiology services, from referrals to reporting, and is intended to serve as guidance for the implementation, homogenization and enhancement of MPI practice in those Member States where the technique is under development.

Book SynopsisThis publication examines the special characteristics of the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its clinical presentation in women, which differ from those of men. While coronary obstruction and multi-vessel disease are more common in men, non-ischemic heart disease (IHD) best encompasses the spectrum of the disease in women. The publication provides a critical review of the existing literature, covering some general aspects of the disease as well as how to make a diagnosis/prognosis of IHD, both clinical and by means of cardiac imaging. The specific situation of cardiac imaging in the management of IHD in low- or middle- income countries is surveyed. In addition, reference is made to cardiotoxicity and radiotherapy-induced disease in breast cancer.

Book SynopsisHuman beings are getting fatter and sicker. As we question what we eat and why we eat it, this book argues that living well involves consuming a raw vegan diet. Exploring the scientific and philosophical aspects of raw veganism, this novel book is essential reading for all interested in promoting ethical, healthful, and sustainable diets.Trade Review'Carlo Alvaro’s thought-provoking book argues for veganism that centres on other animals. Focusing on the human diet as a form of raw veganism, Alvaro reflects on ethical motivations for veganism and offers thoughts on what remains to be done as we consider our relationships with other animals and the environment. It is important reading for us all. The book will enrich debates about how ethical veganism, rather than its more commodified form, contributes to ways in which we can live well while not oppressing other animals and the environment.' — Kay Peggs, Kingston University, UK'Alvaro challenges many human diets, including mine: stop cooking! The principal reason is evolutionary: we are adapted to thrive on raw vegan diets. His thesis, which supports a qualified ban on the consumption of animal products, merits serious consideration from those interested in human nutrition, ecological sustainability, and moral philosophy.' — Jan Deckers, Newcastle University, UK'In Raw Veganism, moral philosopher Carlo Alvaro introduces readers to what he calls "the human diet", practiced in the context of a virtuous life that embraces moderation and eschews violence. By countering many of the philosophical arguments traditionally made to support a vegetarian or vegan existence, critiquing the creation of synthetic meats, and considering the limitations of traditional veganism, Alvaro makes a solid case for the ethical and health supportive practice of raw veganism as the most sustainable counter to contemporary health and environmental challenges.' — Laura Wright, Western Carolina University, USA'I support raw veganism and will look to increase my intake of raw foods because of this book. This is a worthwhile read because raw veganism is an undertheorized component to veganism and the literature on veganism.' — Nathan Poirier, Journal For Human-Animal Studies, Vol. 6'Carlo Alvaro’s Raw Veganism is a righteous call for people to move away from environmentally degrading and animal cruel meat eating to a vegan or “human” diet of fruits, greens, nuts, and seeds. No doubt this book will raise eyebrows, annoy some people, and perhaps even anger a few. The book is easy to read and should be accessible to a wide audience, from academics, medical practitioners, nutritionists, policy makers, parents, and those curious about veganism in general and raw veganism specifically…. certainly this is a timely and very important book in a perilous era of climate change and zoonotic diseases.' — Gregory F. Tague, Environmental Philosophy, Vol. 17 (2020)'Carlo Alvaro’s thought-provoking book argues for veganism that centres on other animals.
