Book SynopsisThere is a widespread and growing acceptance in legal services organisations worldwide that dealing with stress and burnout is not just the responsibility of the individual lawyer. • The Globalization of Foreign Investment in Africa: The Role of Europe, China, and India

Emerald Publishing Limited The Globalization of Foreign Investment in Africa: The Role of Europe, China, and India

    1 in stock

The 21st century era of globalization has opened up many investment alternatives for Africa. There is now a rush by governments and private companies to expand in the rapidly growing region, to the extent that we can begin to talk of a process of world-wide investment. Both traditionally powerful economies in the West and emerging powers such as China and India have contributed to a vast proliferation of investment, raising questions of what intense competition will mean for Africa’s economic development. The Globalization of Foreign Investment in Africa: The Role of Europe, China, and India compares the differing approaches between Asian and European players in Africa, with a particular focus on the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the socio-economic, socio-political, and socio-cultural development of the region. First documenting the historical context of Western dominance from European colonial powers, the book follows the paradigm shift that occurred with China’s 21st century foray into Africa in search of oil and other raw materials to fuel its own rapidly rising economy. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author proposes that Africa will only get maximum benefits from high-level investment activities if it succeeds in evolving an Africa-driven foreign investment policy. This strategy presents the best scenario for an African economic renaissance in the 21st century. An important contribution to research on contemporary Afro-Asian dynamics, this book will be of interest to students and academics of African Studies, Asian Studies, globalization, and economics, as well as potential investors and investing agencies.

  • Realignment, Region, and Race: Presidential

Emerald Publishing Limited Realignment, Region, and Race: Presidential

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Trump presidency may well be the first phase of a new American political alignment deeply rooted in identity politics. Now more than ever, it seems especially important to understand how leaders compete to engage different human motivations—how presidents, presidential candidates, and other political leaders appeal to potential followers’ needs for economic well-being, safety, self-esteem, and a sense of significance. It is time to come to terms with the roles of race and region in US political history. In Realignment, Region, and Race, George R. Goethals addresses this challenge head-on, exploring the place of racial dynamics in American politics from Abraham Lincoln to Donald Trump. He integrates psychology and historical understandings of presidential leadership and politics to explain the way the politics of racial justice and needs for positive social identity have led to different regions in the United States changing party affiliation. He describes the realignment by region of the two major political parties in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans, between the Civil War and the present day, and he considers how for over a century and a half the two parties have offered different social identities, often related to race, that appeal to powerful motives for self-esteem and significance. Goethals’s findings uncover deep contexts for understanding how current political leaders engage experiences and attitudes towards African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans in order to tell particular stories about American and regional identities. Realignment, Region, and Race is essential reading for students of politics, history, and psychology, and it is of keen interest to anyone concerned with the power that identity politics has taken on in recent American elections.Trade ReviewGoethals argues that racial dynamics is responsible for how and why the North and South switched political parties between Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 and George W. Bush's in 2000. Furthermore, these racial dynamics are perpetuated largely by social identity concerns, he says, that is, by people's need to have their political leaders validate them and the groups by which they define themselves. He discusses the realignment of American politics; leadership, motivation, and social identity; the American Revolution to the Mexican War; Republicans for racial justice: Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant; the Republican retreat from founding principles 1877-1920; migration and realignment: African-Americans move north, the GOP moves south; and popular vote tectonics: Republican dominion gives way to Democrats. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsChapter 1. • Mastering Brexits Through The Ages:

Emerald Publishing Limited Mastering Brexits Through The Ages:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBrexit is arguably the most significant UK foreign and economic policy event since at least 1945. Opinion is bitterly divided between whether to leave, when to leave, how to leave and even on what Brexit is. Mastering Brexits Through the Ages: Entrepreneurial Innovators and Small Firms - The Catalysts for Success explores these dynamics through the lens of three previous 'Brexits' – the end of Roman Britain, the Henrician Reformation, and the Elizabethan age. Using multiple historical epithets, it illuminates insights into innovation needs, smaller firm growth, previous step change events and related economic understanding. This book paints a broad picture of possible UK post-Brexit landscapes. Echoing an earlier European Treaty (Versailles, 1919), fourteen action points that can contribute to mitigating downside risks and making post Brexit UK a leading force in the Global Economy are identified. At all times, dynamic entrepreneurs and small companies are at the centre of the narrative. This book is both a key contribution to understanding implementation risks and to identifying what a 'winning' post-Brexit UK economy should look like. Drawing on extensive research, the book identifies the strategic framework and associated practical measures needed to realise a positive outcome. It concurrently analyses Brexit mythology through carefully unpicking and demystifying complexities, anticipated Brexit risks, impacts, implications and unknowns. A book for academics, policy makers, advisers and interested bystanders alike.Trade ReviewThe authors use previous historical events to understand future challenges in the UK after Brexit, by examining three previous "Brexits" as moments of change: the end of Roman Britain, the Henrician Reformation, and the Elizabethan Settlement. They identify 14 propositions to change frameworks to drive success and make the UK the number one innovative economy globally in a Brexit context, derived from past experience and Brexits and combined with today's landscape. They discuss the current landscape of the UK; critical factors key to the success or failure of the domestic economy based on analysis of the outcomes and consequences of the three previous Brexits; the role of smaller firms in innovation and success; the impact of Brexits on various industries, and its risks; various perspectives on Brexit; and actions for coping with Brexit shocks. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsPreface Chapter 1. • Performance-Based Strategy: Tools and Techniques

Emerald Publishing Limited Performance-Based Strategy: Tools and Techniques

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisExecutives in today's business environment have never been busier. Time constraints are ever present. Resources are strained. Strategic planning constantly competes with the tactical demands of running an organization. To make matters worse, most organizational leaders, when confronted with the need for strategic planning, have no idea about how to go about it. They have plenty of knowledge and information about the organization and their situation, but no effective tools to analyze their thoughts, to make decisions that will lead to effective strategies, and most importantly, to create a plan of action. In Performance Based Strategy, Steve Fairbanks and Aaron Buchko offer a practical set of simple, productive tools that will enable leaders to develop effective strategies. The book offers tools that have been tested in small, medium, and Fortune 100 companies, with for profit and not-for-profit organizations, and across a breadth of industries, such as manufacturing, health care, banking, distribution, transportation, government, and charities, among others. The authors have used these tools as insiders to turn around companies, and as outsiders in advisory and board roles. When properly applied, the strategies offered here enable leaders to see their situations and organizations in new ways. Managers will be able to present information in a way that everyone in the organization will understand. Executives can provide a sense of direction that will provide a framework for decision making that will give guidance to people. Above all, applying these tools will enable managers to improve their firm's performance.Trade ReviewFairbanks and Buchko offer advice to business managers who are charged with improving company results quickly and effectively. The bases for many of the tools they describe are not necessarily new, they say, but they put them into a framework for organizations that are constrained in both time and resources. Among their topics are the bottom-up market sizing tool, the strategic market portfolio matrix tool, the poor man's quality function deployment tool, the critical to customer mindset tool: where we are causing you pain, and the 90-day bucket tool. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsForeword Introduction 1. Emerald Publishing Limited The Inclusive Management Strategy: Engineering

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEvery person has the potential to contribute to an organization as long as they have access to the right opportunities and connections, yet it sometimes is all too obvious that the stigma associated with a person’s disability can have a negative impact on their ability to develop healthy work relationships with peers and supervisors. This situation can only be remedied through effective change management, a systematic approach to designing, implementing, and measuring progress on unique culture-change goals. Here Camelia Fawzy and Brenda Shore draw upon more than 40 years of research and practical business experience to support leaders and managers’ efforts in transforming organizations and providing inclusive work opportunities for people with disAbilities (PwDs). What Fawzy and Shore offer is The Inclusive Management™ Strategy (IMS), an innovative approach to evaluating culture-change needs and to designing and implementing change solutions that address unique needs in order to create authentically inclusive social work-environments for PwDs. They address stigmatized differences associated with disabilities that lead to reducing fear, resentment, and anxiety in the organizational climate, ultimately arguing that culture change can only be achieved when most of our employees are engaged in a mind-change process, a conscious effort to change stigmatizing views associated with differences that need to be accommodated. For the practical, implementable plans of action it offers, The Inclusive Management Strategy is a must-read for managers and supervisors involved with policy, decision-making, strategy, and daily accommodations for PwDs.Trade ReviewThis book describes solutions to support employee engagement with colleagues with disabilities through a management strategy that focuses on the development of healthy relationships that lead to creating more inclusive work environments. It addresses the process of changing stereotypical biases through different stages of hiring and employment of people with disabilities, from application for a position, through the interview process, accepting a job, and the early stages of employment. It discusses the definition of disabilities, the concepts of inclusion and respect, culture change through changing perceptions, dealing with perceptions of fairness and threat, using transformational learning, and implementing learning structures for culture change, including informal forums for joint exploration, teams with shared accountability, networks for mutual learning, and feedback-reflection solutions. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe deterioration of employment conditions for an increasing number of employees in late capitalism has prompted researchers to find ways to conceptualise, as well as measure, these observed new tendencies. This book examines precarious employment in Europe through the economic crisis, drawing on two main sources: theories of how the financial and debt crisis coupled with labour market reforms to exacerbate precarity in the workforce; and data from the European Labour Force Survey from 2005-12, capturing various aspects of precarious employment. It also includes a detailed discussion of policy developments in a series of EU countries, with the aim of demonstrating how precarity has been directly linked with certain labour market reforms implemented both before and after the crisis. The authors conclude that the crisis and the labour market reforms represent significant pillars of the strategy used by states and employers to respond to the crisis, as well as promote their competitiveness agenda. The reduction of labour costs and the promotion of higher flexibility are the ultimate goals of that strategy, but the side-effects include an inability to provide high quality jobs to a growing number of people, especially young people. The authors also capture the extent of precarious employment, providing comparable evidence across EU countries.Table of ContentsForewordIntroduction Chapter One: Theory, Concepts and EU Context Chapter Two: Definitions, Measurements and EU Empirical Analysis Discussion

Book SynopsisAdvances in Mergers and Acquisitions stands out from the competition due to its focus on three key characteristics: studies from scholars in different countries, with different research questions, relying on different theoretical perspectives. Such a broad and inclusive approach to mergers and acquisitions is not easily replicated in academic journals, with much narrower mandates and metrics. The chapters published in this volume provide cutting edge ideas by leading scholars, and help to inform mergers and acquisitions research around the world.Trade ReviewThis volume contains eight essays by business and economics scholars from Europe, Asia, and the US, who consider aspects of mergers and acquisitions: ethnographic methods for studying them; whether company performance improves after a merger or acquisition; the role of Japanese firms' announcement of mergers and acquisitions budgets; cross-border mergers and acquisitions in related and technology-intensive industries; the impact of business news reports on acquirer short-term performance; acquisitions as a form of corporate entrepreneurship; the influences of social media on human resources in mergers and acquisitions; and retention strategies in mergers and acquisitions processes. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsIntroduction; Cary L Cooper and Sydney Finkelstein Chapter 1. Book SynopsisThe ebook edition of this title is Open Access, thanks to Knowledge Unlatched funding, and freely available to read online. Corporate executives immersed in the turbulent markets of today face a world not of clear cut moral dilemmas such as right or wrong, or good or evil, but instead must confront large corporate grey areas of lesser good, lesser evil, less true, less unfair, and less unjust. Often these choices become almost indistinguishable.; Corporate Ethics for Turbulent Markets: Executive Response to Market Challenges sets out a universal moral foundation of corporate executive ethics. Its chapters attempt to extend the discussion on human dignity to its practical applications, map out strategic approaches for responding to current turbulent markets, and drill moral skills for taming and tapping current turbulent markets. The book features modern techniques of critical thinking, moral reasoning, moral judgment, and moral justification, and charts how to uphold stakeholder rights and duties and understand corporate moral responsibilities. Written as a guide for corporate executives who strive daily not only to be legal in all they decide, choose and do, but to also be ethical, moral, and even spiritual, the book provides skills and insights that are urgently needed to fathom and capitalize upon in the turbulent markets of today.Trade ReviewMascarenhas (business ethics, Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur) proposes strategies for corporate ethics in terms of moral agencies as processes of corporate deliberations, moral reasoning, moral judgment calls and their justifications, moral choices, decisions and implementation, and moral consequences as outputs. Book SynopsisBehavioral strategy has evolved as a field the last decades both intellectually and institutionally. This volume brings together scholars from several generations that have led and defined the behavioral approaches in strategy to reflect on the past, present, and future of behavioral strategy. Thus, rather than seeking empirical contributions that would fill in research gaps and expand research in specific domains, we endeavored to: a) represent the diversity of perspectives that inform behavioral research in strategic management; b) open up a space for reflection and provocation by scholars who are widely recognized as thought leaders both in their respective strands of behavioral strategy research, and in the field as a whole; and c) offer a set of perspectives and directions for the field of behavioral strategy at a pivotal moment in its evolution.Trade ReviewThis book consists of 18 essays by business and other researchers from the US, Asia, and Europe, who examine behavioral approaches to strategic management research. They address the emergence and evolution of the field of behavioral strategy, including alternative conceptions of behavioral strategy, decoupling and intergroup dynamics in behavioral strategy, and the evolution of implicit and explicit behavioral ideas in the field of strategic management; perspectives on behavioral strategizing, focusing on search and sensing, as well as behavioral rationality, agency, and a communitarian view of the firm; and implications for research, normative recommendations, the study of firm performance, and teaching strategies. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Behavioral Strategy: A Quick Account; Mie Augier, Christina Fang and Violina RindovaI. • Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence:

Emerald Publishing Limited Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLeadership is a slippery concept. Researchers disagree on its essence, describing it variously as behaviours, character traits or styles. Effective leaders understand that we make meaning of our experiences by creating stories we believe to be true, but which are largely based on fragmentary evidence filtered through our biases, beliefs and dispositions. Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence draws on a range of disciplines and scholarly traditions to build a compelling case for a new perspective on leadership, seeing it as a deeply embodied, intuitive skill of curating shared narratives, in influence relationships. Defining narrative intelligence as 'our ability to evaluate the efficacy of the stories we create to serve our needs, our capacity to rewrite them, and the practical skill to take effective action', this book methodically outlines how leaders cultivate their own narrative intelligence to: Become the person they seek to be by aligning narratives and core values with actions Navigate through the challenging leadership space of populism and the erosion of traditional values Ethically curate the narrative others hold of them Strengthen self-efficacy, take more effective actions, and avoid stories which inadvertently undermine goals Communicate with trust and influence Build energy and alignment within teams by generating shared narratives Cultivate a culture of narrative intelligence This book will prepare leaders to reshape their own and others' stories to be more aligned with achieving goals and wellbeing. It will prove a useful resource to undergraduates and post-graduates in courses on leadership and management, as well as organizational development consultants and senior executives.Trade Review‘Many people live in a fixed narrative. Few people see themselves as the creators of their own culture. Leaders are rare people who learn to create genuine, shared narratives. In such networks people flourish and expectations are exceeded. This is a landmark book that explains how to do what many people cannot imagine doing.’ -- Professor Robert E. Quinn, Center for Positive Organizations, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan; Author of The Economics of Higher Purpose‘This is a book of sweeping scope. Morgan artfully synthesizes research and practice with a blend of compelling examples and stories. These provide the depth and breadth to provoke leadership self-reflection. For anyone interested in fresh approaches to leadership, this is a powerful resource.' -- Dr John Edwards, Researcher and Co-author of Schools That Deliver; International Co-ordinator: schools-that-deliver.com‘Comprehensive, insightful and thought-provoking; Rewriting Leadership with Narrative Intelligence offers both leaders and leadership scholars a truly innovative way of approaching the work of leadership. Enhanced by apt reflective prompts as well as activities to try, this book provides a welcome antidote to tired recipes for leadership which ignore its co-created, contextually sensitive nature.’ -- Professor Donna Ladkin, Graduate School of Leadership and Change, Antioch University; Author of Mastering the Ethical Dimension of Organizations: A Self-Reflective Guide to Developing Ethical Astuteness, and Rethinking Leadership: A New Look at Old Leadership Questions'Dr Morgan’s book is a ray of bright hope that opens the window on the mindset of leaders and the power of narratives to shape leadership, and in turn to shape followership. This book is a must-read for all involved in the study and practice of leadership.’ -- Rob Elkington, PhD, Adjunct Professor, University of Ontario Institute of Technology; Co-Author of Visionary Leadership in a Turbulent World: Thriving in the New VUCA Context and Exceptional Leadership by Design: How Design in Great Organizations Produces Great Leadership'Dr Greg Morgan has written at once a scholarly, practical and profound exploration of the stories we tell ourselves, how they impact us and how we can best manage and leverage them to be more effective leaders in this complex work world which we now live. I recommend it highly.’ -- John Campbell, Founding Director, Growth Coaching International, Sydney, Australia; Bend, Oregon, USA‘Greg Morgan’s new book is a challenge on many levels to the “data orthodoxy” of contemporary leadership practice. The senses of narrative and their appropriateness to leadership are cogently and compellingly laid out and supported. It is an explanation of how meaningful data amidst the richness of narrative can illuminate and lead us onto deeper learning and greater, real effectiveness in leadership. This very readable book has an important place today and for the future.’ -- Malcolm Elliott, President, Australian Primary Principals Association'A lot of books on leadership focus on the organizational “what” and “how” of leadership. Morgan takes a different, and important, stance in highlighting the “who” of leadership. By developing their narrative intelligence, leaders find practical wisdom from which they can co-create a reality of sustainability, well-being and success in their organization. It is a groundbreaking book.’ -- Professor Reinhard Stelter, University of Copenhagen; Author of The Art of Dialogue in Coaching: Towards Transformative Exchange and A Guide to Third Generation Coaching‘Greg Morgan's beautifully written manuscript embodies a resonating personal and collective truth that guides us down a deep and interconnected journey to illuminate the bonds between narrative intelligence, leadership influence and the execution of leadership intentions. • The Battle To Do Good: Inside McDonald’s

Emerald Publishing Limited The Battle To Do Good: Inside McDonald’s

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn The Battle to Do Good, former McDonald's executive Bob Langert takes readers on a behind-the-scenes eye witness account of the mega brand's battle to address numerous societal hot-button issues, such as packaging, waste, recycling, obesity, deforestation, and animal welfare. From the late 80s, McDonald's landed smack in the middle of one contentious issue after another, often locking horns with powerful NGOs such as Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Corporate Accountability. This sudden shift from being the beloved Golden Arches since opening its doors in 1955, to the demon of many societal ills, caught McDonald's off guard. Langert chronicles the highs and lows that McDonald's experienced in turbulent times and how its sustainability journey evolved from playing defense to strategically solving issues with unlikely partners, including a whirling dervish, autistic animal scientist, and avid environmentalists from the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International. Packed with first-hand anecdotes, interviews with key McDonald's executives and NGO leaders, and scores of lessons learned, The Battle to Do Good is a sustainability page turner that provides unique insights and guidance on how to successfully navigate and manage today's societal issues to make the business stronger, more relevant, and more profitable.Trade Review"The Battle to Do Good: Inside McDonald’s Sustainability Journey is a must-read even for those who are cynical about the business of corporate social responsibility." -- The Economist"If you're interested in the changing consumer marketplace and how societal demands will directly impact how you run cattle at home on the ranch, this book is definitely a page turner worth reading. It's insightful, honest and really gives a glimpse at the changing dynamics of retailers, supplier and consumer relationships." -- BEEF Magazine"Bob is a terrific storyteller - and man, does he have stories: battling with Greenpeace and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; collaborating with Environmental Defense Fund and World Wildlife Fund; engaging Dr. Temple Grandin, the animal welfare guru; enlisting big suppliers like Smithfield and Cargill; convening the beef industry to define sustainable beef; and getting buy-in from an ever-changing cast of McDonald's executives... His remarkable story is not just a great read about an enviable career, but a hero's journey through the history of sustainable business and what it takes to be a leader, sometimes against the greatest of odds." -- Joel Makower"A 'sustainability page-turner' is not a description one often finds associated with books in the usually heavy-going world of corporate responsibility. In the case of The Battle to do Good: inside McDonald's sustainability journey, just published in hardback by Emerald Publishing, the marketing claim rings true." -- Corporate CitizenshipLangert, who led McDonald's corporate social responsibility and sustainability efforts for 25 years, describes the company's experiences with sustainability issues and various battles with activists related to these issues, including climate change, animal rights, obesity, sourcing practices, deforestation, waste, a sustainable supply chain, values, Happy Meal toys, pesticides, the Amazon rainforest, sustainable beef, and making a difference, to provide insight into what to do and not to do in times of crisis and when dealing with activists and advocates. -- Annotation ©2019 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsIntroduction. Out of stock

Book SynopsisCombatting financial stability risks is a highly challenging task which can by no means be concentrated into a ‘one-size fits all’ approach. It is important to select the appropriate tools and techniques in order to monitor, analyse, and maintain financial stability through proactive policy measures. Tools and Techniques for Financial Stability Analysis explores all key aspects of analytical tools and challenges for sound financial stability assessments. Comprehensive coverage is given to value at risk, stress testing, graphical tools for financial stability, the financial system stress index, as well as ratios and metrics of financial stability assessment. Finally, a concluding chapter is devoted to understand the key challenges involved in maintaining financial stability. This book will prove valuable to central bankers, economists, and policy-makers who are involved in the field of financial stability, as well as researchers studying the field.Trade Review‘Indranarain Ramlall's proposal is a great attempt at giving a comprehensive view of financial stability from a theoretical, practical and policy perspective. It aims at providing future students with the tools to understand the framework in which financial stability is assessed and understood today by international organisations and central banks across the world. To my knowledge, this is the only book that covers such a wide range of topics related to financial stability. It, therefore, has the potential to become a good reference book on the topic. I believe that Indranarain Ramlall has made a great proposal to provide a “big picture view” on financial stability. I look forward to reading the textbook!’ -- Celine Tcheng, Central Bank of France‘Financial stability has become a major concern for central banks, after the 2008 global financial crisis. More and more research is tackling topics regarding the role of the financial system in macroeconomic models and the implementation of macroprudential policy. Therefore, a comprehensive overlook of financial stability issues, such as the one offered by The Theory and Practice of Financial Stability can prove particularly useful for experts working in the financial system, central bankers included. The textbook covers a diverse set of topics from policy matters to risk assessment analysis.’ -- Elena Banu, Central Bank of Romania‘This book is a comprehensive work on one of the most actual topics in the aftermath of the Great Recession. It covers a wide range of topics on financial stability complementing theoretical frameworks with practical examples. Starting with a conceptual description on financial stability, the book overviews a history of the major financial crises and Basel regulation rules. Particularly useful is an inquiry of the financial stability perspectives across different asset classes and economy sectors. Another beneficial feature of this book is a complete oversight of stress testing methodologies. The book is a thorough compilation of topics on financial stability and definitely deserves a place on the bookshelves of central bankers, government and private institutions’ officials.’ -- Vaidotas Sumskis, Bank of Lithuania‘Dr Indranarain's book is an actual textbook for interpreting interrelations between all aspects and sectors of the international economy and will surely be a highly useful tool for credit institutions, investors, practitioners as well as academics. From a Central Bank's point of view this book provides an integrated approach to macroeconomic environment and the interactions between the various factors and an actual tool for assessing and measuring leading circumstances and indicators that affect financial stability and may cause vulnerabilities.’ -- Vasiliki Vlachostergiou, Central Bank of Greece‘This is a monumental work! I didn't find anything missing. I think it will be useful for students, economic and finance professionals and policymakers.’ -- Christophe Andre, OECD‘Financial stability was always a priority for financial sector regulators and it has surpassed other objectives since the global financial crisis. Given various complexities associated with the financial stability and rapid developments over time, existing literature tends to deal with specific aspects of financial stability. It is very difficult to get a comprehensive book dealing with the wide range of concepts, different segments of financial sector, ever increasing variety of financial instruments and regulations associated with financial stability. The current book is a very good attempt to fill this gap through its comprehensive coverage of almost the entire gamut of financial stability related topics. This book should be useful for financial sector regulators, related ministries in the governments, researchers, multilateral institutions, other financial sector stakeholders and general public who are interested to know the complexities of the financial sector and financial stability.’ -- Ajay Prakash-an, Financial Stability ExpertTable of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisDifference in the levels of progress between developed and developing countries poses significant challenges for firms from the developing world to operate successfully in markets in the developed world. However, as globalization deepens, firms in the developing world, like their counterparts in the developed world, are forced to look for markets outside of their domestic environment. Increasingly, firms in developing countries will have no choice but to look for markets in large and wealthy developed countries in addition to other similar developing countries. International Business Blunders will provide direct evidence from CEOs and international business managers within firms that have moved from their domestic market in the developing world to do business in the developed world. The insights from these cases will serve as invaluable lessons for other firms that are seeking to enter these physically and psychically distant markets. By highlighting the blunders that are made by firms that have braved entering markets in developed countries, this book will provide pedagogical examples of how to minimize the blunders that future managers might make. The book will serve as a valuable tool for international business managers, students in MBA programmes, and also scholars who are researching and writing in the area of business and management.Trade ReviewThis book describes mistakes made in international business, focusing on firms that are considered Third World Multinationals, those in resource-poor locations, with limited financial capital and technological capabilities. It concentrates on those in developing states of the Caribbean that have decided to do business in markets in developed countries in North America, Western Europe, and developed Asia. It describes blunders in marketing, finance, human resources, supply chain and production, and business-to-government relationships, along with lessons learned. Chapters discuss the literature on mistakes made by firms in the area of focus, specific blunders as reported by firms, and blunders made by other firms in the wider international business arena, ending with a chapter on lessons that can be learned by future managers who are aspiring to expand their business to markets in large developed countries. -- Annotation ©2019 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisCreativity is the development and use of imagination to solve current challenges or create innovative ideas for the future. The complexity and challenges of the contemporary world arguably require increasing levels of creativity and innovation to manage the disruptive forces at work and build a prosperous and sustainable global society. Public relations is often seen as the discipline that amplifies creative ideas developed by other sectors, but this is changing. With the blurring of lines among creative industries, organisations are increasingly turning to PR to generate the ‘big ideas’ at the heart of effective communication. This volume gathers 12 outstanding contributions from scholars based in Germany, Finland, Austria, Romania, the UK, Spain, France, Norway, Turkey and the USA. Taken together, the chapters demonstrate a range of possibilities for creative thinking about public relations management and collaboration in different settings and with different purposes. The chapters hint at opportunities, point towards innovation, and challenge our thinking about the power of creativity.Trade ReviewThis volume contains 12 chapters drawn from a EUPRERA (European Public Relations Education and Research Association) conference held in London in 2017, on the topic of creative thinking in public relations management. Scholars from Europe and the US address aspects related to leadership, ethics, and creativity, including the corporate value of listening, ethical leadership and interpersonal communication competence, and leadership communication; knowledge and collaboration for fostering creativity, including the role of trust and intrinsic motivation in enhancing participation and creativity in crowdsourcing communities, the influence of knowledge transfer on the development of creativity in education for public relations, the co-creation of knowledge for innovation and public relations in multi-stakeholder projects, and collaborative creativity in public relations; and new creative approaches to public relations, with discussion of culture and public relations, a design-thinking approach to visual communication, examples of award-winning campaigns illustrating creativity in public relations, a co-creative model for communication and dissemination, and visual methods for strategic internal communication management. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsPART I: LEADERSHIP, ETHICS AND CREATIVITYThe Power of Listening in Corporate Communications. Book SynopsisA humorous and honest account of an ex-pat reporter’s life in the south west of France. Packed with amusing anecdotes and true stories about the characters and places of the region. A must for anybody even thinking about crossing the Channel for the good life in rural France! Every summer thousands of Brits and other Europeans head to the south west of France for bliss, beauty and freedom. It’s great for a holiday - but what’s it like to actually live and work there? That is what reporter Chris Bockman decided to find out when he set up a Press Agency in Toulouse. His project was doomed (apparently) - he was constantly told by industry sages that nothing goes on there out of season. But he soon discovered that the strange characters, ambitious local politicians, vain sportsmen and yes, badly-behaving foreigners provided more than enough material to keep newsrooms happy. There are the politicians preaching the benefits of Brexit while living a grand life in France. There is also one village in the Pyrenees where many flock believing when the inevitable end of the world comes, it will be the sole place that will survive. More stories include treasure-seekers convinced of a Catholic Church cover-up, the downright dishonest practices in the truffle markets and other inhabitants of the region who have included ex-terrorists and murderers on the run. This is an inside look at the peculiarities of human nature and life on the other side of the Channel, with characters and places you’ll love, Are You the Foie Gras Correspondent? is a book for anybody thinking to pull up stakes and moving to where life is “slower-paced” or has a fascination with the true life in France’s southern provincial cities and countryside.

Profile Books Ltd The Wisdom of Finance: How the Humanities Can

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisLonglisted for the FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award 2017 Finance is shrouded in mystery for outsiders, while many insiders are uneasy with the disrepute of their profession. How can finance become more accessible and also recover its nobility? Harvard Business School professor Mihir Desai takes up the cause of restoring humanity to finance. With deft wit, he draws upon a rich knowledge of literature, film, history, and philosophy to explain finance's inner workings. Through this creative approach, he shows that outsiders can easily access the underlying ideas and insiders can reacquaint themselves with the core values of their profession. This combination of finance and the humanities creates unusual and illuminating pairings: Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope are guides to risk management; Jeff Koons becomes an advocate of leverage; and Mel Brooks' The Producers teaches us about fiduciary responsibility. In Desai's vision, the principles of finance also provide answers to critical questions in our lives: bankruptcy teaches us how to react to failure, the lessons of mergers apply to marriages, and the Capital Asset Pricing Model demonstrates the true value of relationships. The Wisdom of Finance is a wholly unique book, offering an enlivening new perspective on one of the world's most complex and misunderstood professions.Trade ReviewA charming, provocative and readable book. * Financial Times *Those familiar with the world of finance will have their perspective shifted, and for the rest of us, Desai provides a welcome entry. * The Boston Globe *A fascinating new perspective on modern finance -- Oliver Hart, 2016 Nobel Laureate in EconomicsLucid, witty and delightfully erudite...From the French revolution to film noir, from the history of probability to Jane Austen and The Simpsons, this is an astonishing intellectual feast. -- Sebastian Mallaby, author of The Man Who Knew: The Life and Times of Alan GreenspanThis book is startling, a stunning, erudite, fascinating look at the world as we think we know it, but it's a world where all roads lead to finance, and in particular, insurance. Highly recommended. -- Seth Godin, author of Purple CowA fascinating romp through history and Desai is to be commended for finding fresh examples away from the obvious reference points ... highly original. * Money Week *Desai skilfully makes his subject accessible without dumbing it down. * Director magazine *Desai's approach will broaden and enrich any perspective. * Publishers Weekly *For those of us who have long believed that the field of finance was more than a way to make a good living, Mihir Desai has written a liberating book. He shows us how an understanding of the humanities can increase our effectiveness as financial practitioners and add a dimension of joy to process. -- Byron R. Wien, Vice Chairman, Multi-Asset Investments, Blackstone GroupThe Wisdom of Finance offers a thoughtful explanation of how money works that recognises how perverted the industry can be, but which also argues that "there is great value - and there are great values - in finance" ... This is a charming, provocative and readable book. For non-financiers, it can be a great teaching tool; for financiers, it is a badly needed rap on the knuckles, and perhaps an inspiration. * Financial Times *Mihir Desai is a fortunate person: he is an expert economist who is also well-read. In this book he uses his skills to provide a fascinating new perspective on modern finance, showing how the main concepts have parallels in literature and the arts. Students of finance will learn literature, students of literature will learn finance, and everybody will learn something. -- Oliver Hart, 2016 Nobel Laureate in EconomicsThe Wisdom of Finance is fascinating and delightful throughout. Desai explains the world of economics to those who love literature and the world of literature to those who are passionate about economics. And if you enjoy both - well, then you are in for an extra-special treat. I kept shouting aloud: "I get it, I finally get it!" Here is a book that will make you richer in spirit - and maybe in money, too. -- Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club and Books for LivingThe Wisdom of Finance is required reading for anyone interested in finance or in pursuing a career in the industry. Mihir eloquently traces the products, practices, and services of our modern financial system to their roots while providing literary context and illustration. It's a refreshing approach to what can be a turgid topic, and it can provide practitioners with a new appreciation (and understanding) of their role in their companies, the industry, and in the broader economy. -- Vikram Pandit, Chairman and CEO of The Orogen Group and former CEO of Citigroup. In The Wisdom of Finance, Mihir Desai masterfully achieves two goals - bringing great clarity to how finance works and why it is important, and shining a bright light on how the humanities helps us to better understand our lives and world. -- Clayton Rose, president of Bowdoin CollegeMihir Desai brilliantly applies original lessons drawn from the world of finance to enable all of us to lead more secure, fulfilling and happier lives. Using myriad examples from historical sources and current experiences, Desai takes essential financial theories and translates them into easily understood ways to enrich and improve our lives. -- Bill George, former chairman and CEO of Medtronic and author of Discover Your True NorthThe Wisdom of Finance does for the global economy what Alain de Botton's How Proust Can Change Your Life did for French literature: it expands our idea of an obscure topic and illuminates its centrality to your everyday. This is a work of true philosophy and passion, incorporating thinkers and artists from E. O. Wilson to Jeff Koons elegantly into our understanding of how we make choices. In a chaotic world, everyone should read Mihir Desai's extraordinary debut. -- Lea Carpenter, author of Eleven DaysThe Wisdom of Finance is that rare book that manages to be both illuminating and truly fun to read. It puts in deeply human terms ideas that have so often become caricatured and one-dimensional. You will be glad you spent time with Mihir Desai, and you will think of several people to whom you will send this book once you've finished. -- Gayle Lemmon, author of Ashley’s WarMihir Desai has written a thoughtful and remarkable book. It takes us not only on a functional journey about the role of finance in society, but also an ethical and social one. -- Rakesh Khurana, dean of Harvard CollegeA scholar who is equally at home with art, literature, contemporary culture and financial theory, Mihir Desai improbably brings these worlds together in an absorbing, personal narrative that has much to teach us about how they are deeply connected. -- Will Goetzmann, author of Money Changes Everything; Edwin J. Beinecke Professor of Finance and Management Studies; Director, International Center for Finance, Yale School of ManagementThis slender but erudite treatise...does valuable work toward demystifying finance for laypeople and deepening the art for practitioners. Desai's approach will broaden and enrich any perspective. * Publishers Weekly *Mihir has written a remarkable book - he uses the humanities to demystify and humanize finance. It is a remarkable intellectual accomplishment that those within finance - and those curious about it - will enjoy deeply. -- Deepak S Parekh, Chairman, HDFC LtdDesai takes a real step towards creating a dialogue of disciplines ... if only more people - whether financiers or academics - could combine with such finesse economic knowledge and an appreciation of the human condition. * Times Higher Education Supplement *A beautiful book for everyone. -- Sarah Kauss * Drapers *By linking to literature, history and philosophy, [Desai] tries to build deeper resonance. It is a daring, intriguing work, offbeat and fascinating, something both practitioners of finance and the general public can learn from. * The Globe and Mail *Fascinating ... From accepting multi-million pound tips from Russian oligarchs, to the offshore tax havens, meet Butler Britain... In his Sunday Times-bestselling expose, Oliver Bullough reveals how the UK took up its position at the elbow of the worst people on Earth: the oligarchs, kleptocrats and gangsters. Though the UK prides itself on values of fair play and the rule of law, few countries do more to frustrate global anti-corruption efforts. From the murky origins of tax havens and gambling centres in the British Virgin Islands and Gibraltar to the influence of oligarchs in the British establishment, Butler to the World is the story of how we became a nation of Jeeveses - and how it doesn't have to be this way.Trade ReviewBUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022 * The Times *Brilliant -- Marina Hyde * Guardian *A really engrossing and enraging read -- Ian RankinBullough's angry, fascinating study of corruption and power in modern-day geopolitics has the pace of an airport thriller and the righteous zeal of a prosecuting barrister * Observer *A very, very good book -- Ian HislopTerrific ... pulled by a current of Tory indolence, Britain flounders in a sea of dirty money -- Nick Cohen * Observer *Razor-sharp * FT *Could a book ever be more timely? ... Book SynopsisIn nearly every realm of daily life there is an invisible velvet rope that divides how we live. On one side, appointments are secured, queues are skipped and doors are opened. On the other, people fight for an empty seat on the plane, a place in line at a theme park or even a medical exam. Schwartz shows how business innovators have stepped in to exploit the gap between the rich and everyone else, shifting services away from the masses and finding new ways to profit by serving the privileged. The frictionless world of VIP experiences seems like good business, but as this model expands, the costs are mounting. Schwartz's gripping account takes us on a glittering, behind-the-scenes tour of this new reality - and shows the toll the velvet rope divide is taking on society.Trade ReviewIf you've wondered how today's rich live ... you need to read The Velvet Rope Economy. You'll never look at boarding a plane-or privilege and polarization-the same way. -- Charles Duhigg, bestselling author * The Power of Habit *Nelson Schwartz's book uses vivid and detailed reporting to advance an important, novel, and ultimately scary argument about the ways that inequality is changing our economy. Anyone interested in the topic of inequality should read this book. -- Jason Furman, former Chairman of the White House Council of Economic AdvisersTimely and essential . . . Through careful reporting and entertaining storytelling, Schwartz unpacks the degree to which wealth insulates the privileged, as well as the dangers of our free-falling transformation into a caste-based society. * Esquire *Sharp and illuminating, [...] entertaining and infuriating, this carefully balanced inquiry strikes the right chord. * Publishers Weekly *A masterpiece of beautifully written, carefully reported social commentary. Schwartz is able to take everyday things we already know-like the fact that the rich get to live a life entirely distinct from the rest of us-and shows, through colorful tales and great storytelling, that this is no curiosity. It is an indictment, a warning, a prediction, and a nuanced vision of our society. This book will become essential reading to understand this moment. But don't let the grandness of his work scare you: it's a fun, surprising read filled with unexpected peeks into the perquisites of superwealth. -- Adam Davidson, co-founder of Planet Money and author of The Passion EconomyThrough vivid illustrations and systematic analysis, this brilliantly argued book demonstrates the corrosive impact of growing inequality on society....A must read. -- Emmanuel Saez, Professor of Economics, University of California, BerkeleyAn intriguing examination of income inequality * Kirkus Reviews *Schwartz decided not just to document all the ways our business culture has learned to cater to the rich at the expense of the rest of us, but to explain why it matters. It's an eye-opening exploration of a trend with many consequences, none of them good. -- Joe Nocera, author of A Piece of the Action: How the Middle Class Joined the Money ClassSchwartz vividly portrays the way inequality plays out in the thick of daily life. The visceral divides between us are brilliantly - and painfully - brought to life. -- Richard V. Reeves, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution and author * Dream Hoarders *Explains how everything Americans purchase - travel, leisure, education, and health care - suddenly got really good for the wealthy and a lot worse for the rest of us ... Book SynopsisChange is a powerful force, but one that must be directed if it is to have a positive and calculated outcome. It can be shaped according to the needs of an organisation to grow or contract, respond to competition or threat, or simply to keep pace with the world around it. It is widely understood by leaders and managers that only effective project management has the potential to deliver the transformation they seek. However, many projects have failed to deliver the outcomes that their sponsors anticipated. Too many have produced apps, buildings, processes, products and services that remain on the shelf, unadopted, and a costly reminder that projects are vehicles that can just as easily deliver failure as success. The revised and expanded third edition of this much-admired guide explains the principles and techniques of change and project management. With its clear, structured approach it is an invaluable handbook for helping leaders and managers to be sufficiently informed, equipped and confident to use projects to deliver change, and to realise its benefits.Trade ReviewAn invaluable source of information and clear thinking for students and seasoned professionals alike * Manager Magazine *Very easy to use ... its major strength is its clear and structured approach * Project Magazine *
