Book SynopsisGoverning boards play a crucial role in ensuring that public and non-profit organizations are publicly accountable and perform well. Until now, there have been relatively few detailed empirical studies of what boards do in practice, but this book fills that gap by bringing together analyses based upon some of the best recent empirical studies.Using a new theoretical framework that highlights the paradoxical nature of governance, the book throws light on the questions at the heart of recent debates about non-profit boards: are boards publicly accountable or is there a democratic deficit? are boards able to exercise real power, or does management run the show? are boards effective stewards of an organization''s resources? what effects are regulatory and other changes designed to improve board effectiveness having? Taylor & Francis Strategy Execution

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisStrategy execution is one of the most important and exciting topics in management. Implementing strategy in today's complex organizations is an enormous challenge but one that all leaders must tackle. This lively book is an essential guide to strategy execution for practicing managers and those in advanced management education. It combines the rigour of advanced research with the accessibility of practical experience and application to lead readers through the subject.Drawing together existing knowledge and reporting findings from his own research, Andrew MacLennan brings this often neglected topic sharply into focus. After introducing and defining strategy execution, the book presents a series of systematic frameworks to help managers and leaders: identify common strategy execution barriers and diagnose performance problems in particular situations translate conceptual strategies into concrete activities align emergent activities and projects wiTrade Review'This is a masterful book about an important subject. Strategy execution is the missing link, without which even the best of plans is rendered impotent. Yet it is so often inadequately addressed or overlooked completely. This is why Dr MacLennan’s book is so welcome. It is both eminently practical and intellectually rigorous, with a wealth of sensible and rational advice, and extremely useable models. It will hold the attention of anyone who is interested in how strategy can really be made to work in practice.' Nigel Slack, Professor of Operations Management & Strategy, University of Warwick, UK 'This is an excellent book highlighting the common disconnect between what organisations think they should do and what they are actually doing. All too often, organisations find making the right things happens very difficult. This book explains why this is and what you can do to change it - it is relevant for all companies trying to make change happen.' Neil Roden, Group Director, Human Resources, The Royal Bank of Scotland plc 'Andrew MacLennan manages to blend his extensive experience and deep knowledge of underlying theory into a marvellously readable, accessible and practical manual on strategy execution that that belongs within easy reach of every strategist – whether manager or student, practicing or aspiring.' 1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade and capital are important in the Asia region. Trade in the APEC region has been increasing, but the large rise in Chinaâs exports has also been disturbing as it exhibits export substitution. The first two papers conclude that every economy has gained in trade, though some are more successful than others. And that rise in export has a lot to do with a rise in foreign direct investments. Macroeconomic stability is the pre-condition to growth. Empirical studies show that the lack of stability has encouraged capital to flee an economy. Similarly, a market-oriented, price-driven and matured financial market provides an alternative source of funding. The lesson in economic development is that success in economic growth requires both an externally friendly market environment as well as consistent and favourable internal policies.Table of ContentsINTRO - Changing Patterns of Trade, Capital and Management across Asian Economies Chris Rowley1. Book SynopsisFor decades, neighbourhoods been pivotal sites of social, economic and political exclusion processes, and civil society initiatives, attempting bottom-up strategies of re-development and regeneration. In many cases these efforts resulted in the creation of socially innovative organizations, seeking to satisfy the basic human needs of deprived population groups, to increase their political capabilities and to improve social interaction both internally and between the local communities, the wider urban society and political world. SINGOCOM - Social INnovation GOvernance and COMmunity building is the acronym of the EU-funded project on which this book is based. Sixteen case studies of socially-innovative initiatives at the neighbourhood level were carried out in nine European cities, of which ten are analysed in depth and presented here. The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organiziTrade Review"A common criticism of edited volumes is that they can sometimes be little more than a loosely connected series of chapters. However, Can Neighbourhoods Save the City does not fall into this trap. Not only are the empirical chapters, which form the body of the book, connected through a commonly considered analytical framework, but a solid narrative draws the reader through from conception to conclusion. Ultimately, it is clear that sub-city initiatives provide hugely generative sites of social cohesion that co-exist alongside official state-driven forms of city governance. Many of these initiatives are not new, although the invocation of innovation and enterprise within their analysis may not have been so emphasised in previous eras."–Professor Anna Davies, Trinity College DublinTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe healthcare environment is in flux. On the one hand, doctors are being driven into ever larger group practices by increasing regulatory and administrative burdens and the need for greater negotiating power. At the same time, growing infrastructure costs and the threat of payment reform is pushing them into closer alignment with hospital systems. This rapidly changing environment requires a more sophisticated set of leadership skills. This book introduces a unique and practical coaching style as a way of interacting with colleagues, managing direct-reports, helping others solve problems, responding to change, making effective choices and developing professionally. It draws from four evidence-based models for interacting with others and facilitating change - solution-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and transactional analysis â and reframes them so that they are congruent with managerial and leadership terminology and provide a practicTrade Review"After several years as an executive coach specializing in working with healthcare providers, especially physicians in leadership roles, Dr. Hicks has developed a practical and meaningful approach to teaching these leaders how to have effective helping conversations with subordinates and co-workers. Like many professionals, physicians don’t go to school and are not trained for the leadership roles they may suddenly find themselves in. They are taught to quickly diagnose problems and give direct answers and advice. As leaders, they must learn and demonstrate a very different set of skills, including listening, questioning, guiding, and helping others learn to solve their own problems. The "Four Square Coaching Model" developed by Dr. Hicks is a proven method for learning those skills. I highly recommend this book for any healthcare professional who wants to hone their ability to lead and develop others."- William M. Book SynopsisHow the media are organised and funded is central to understanding their role in society. Critical Political Economy of the Media provides a clear, comprehensive and insightful introduction to the political economic analysis of contemporary media. Jonathan Hardy undertakes a critical survey of political economy scholarship encompassing worldwide literature, issues and debates, and relationships with other academic approaches. He assesses different ways of making sense of media convergence and digitalisation, media power and influence, and transformations across communication markets. Many of the problems of the media that prompted critical political economy research remain salient, he argues, but the approach must continue to adapt to new conditions and challenges. Hardy advances the case for a revitalised critical media studies for the 21st century. Topics covered include: media ownership and financing news and entertainment Trade Review"Jonathan Hardy’s book deals in a highly astute manner with the question: How are the media shaped by and shaping capitalism and power structures? It is an excellent resource for scholars, students, activists and citizens who are interested in the critique of the political economy of the media and who want to understand what informational capitalism is doing to us and how we can politically resist it." Christian Fuchs, Professor of Social Media, University of Westminster "Questions about the arrogance of media owners, the pervasiveness of advertising and public relations, the failure of regulation, and the pressures on public cultural institutions, are once again rising to the top of the agenda for debate. Jonathan Hardy’s timely intervention provides an admirably clear and accessible introduction to a tradition of inquiry, critical political economy, that has always placed these issues centre-stage. Anyone seriously interested in unpicking the ways media are shaped by the shifting play of power between corporations, governments and civil society will find this book an indispensable guide." Graham Murdock, Professor of Culture and Economy, Loughborough University "The critical study of the political economy of the media has never been more important. Jonathan Hardy provides an excellent overview of this vital perspective in a book that should become a key text in media and communication studies." • The Corporate Criminal

Taylor & Francis The Corporate Criminal

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDrawing upon a wide range of sources of empirical evidence, historical analysis and theoretical argument, this book shows beyond any doubt that the private, profit-making, corporation is a habitual and routine offender. The book dissects the myth that the corporation can be a rational, responsible, ''citizen''. It shows how in its present form, the corporation is permitted, licensed and encouraged to systematically kill, maim and steal for profit. Corporations are constructed through law and politics in ways that impel them to cause harm to people and the environment. In other words, criminality is part of the DNA of the modern corporation. Therefore, the authors argue, the corporation cannot be easily reformed. The only feasible solution to this ''crime'' problem is to abolish the legal and political privileges that enable the corporation to act with impunity. Trade ReviewFew academic books demand the kind of critical attention that The Corporate Criminal demands. This is surely the most powerful and compelling critique of the corporation ever written. Tombs and Whyte pull no punches in this arrestingly accessible but scholarly book. Their argument is simple – its legal and historical construction is such that the resulting corporation is endemically criminogenic and thus beyond reform. Their conclusion is utterly persuasive, ‘the goal of corporate opposition must be the abolition of the corporation’ - Penny Green is Professor of Law and Globalisation and Director of the International State Crime Initiative at Queen Mary University of London, UKTombs and Whyte provide a brilliant, unflinching and original account of corporate power in neoliberal capitalism. Their careful analysis – rich in both empirical and theoretical insights - convincingly reveals that corporations cannot balance economic progress with social welfare, but also that the only effective corrective is to disassemble the corporate form. This superb book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand how and why corporations have come to define and destroy our daily lives, and what do about it. – Susanne Soederberg, Queen’s University, Canada It is clear that today, everyone is aware of the devastating effects of corporate capitalism on the environment, global inequality, and various other aspects of our societies and daily lives. What is utterly refreshing about Tombs and Whyte’s book, is the realisation that none of these effects can be mitigated by legal reform or neoliberal regimes such as ‘corporate social responsibility’. What is needed is a revolution in our thinking about, and action towards, corporate capitalism, and Tombs and Whyte’s call to ‘bring down the corporation’ deserves to be carried far and wide. - Grietje Baars, The City Law School, City University London. This book offers readers a provocative brief for the case that corporations are in fact not a sustainable enterprise, and that their inherently criminal and criminogenic nature must be fully recognized.— David O. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe literature of marketplace behaviour, long dominated by economic and psychological discourse, has matured in the last decade to reveal the vast expanse of consumption activity not adequately addressed â in either theoretical or empirical perspective - by the discipline's favoured approaches. The lived experience of consumption in cultural and historical context, rendered in a fashion that is both intellectually insightful and authentically evocative, and that recognizes the dynamics of accommodation and resistance that characterize the individual's relationship with the market, is the central interpretive thrust of an emerging interdisciplinary field inquiry broadly labelled consumer culture theory. In this volume, some of the leading scholars of this field explore in great empirical detail and theoretical depth the relationships that the consumer has developed both with goods and services and with the stakeholders that animate markets. Beginning with an examination of the Trade ReviewThe role of culture in consumption has been long acknowledged, but related research has been fragmented and under-appreciated. This volume, with its impressive line-up of topics and authors, will play a vital role in the development of Consumer Culture Theory as the well-spring from which new and deep understandings of the consumer world are emerging. David Glen Mick, McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia (Former Editor JCR, Past President, ACR)Consumer Culture Theory is not a theory. It is much more. It is the future of research about consumers, markets, and business. The settings for the research and reflections presented here are fascinating in and of themselves: DNA testing, home away from home, Wal Mart, Christmas trees, personal trainers, gambling casinos, advertising, dolls, and poetry. But even more stimulating are insights into basic human issues addressed in these chapters. They include: Who am I? Where do I come from? What can I become? What is home? What is family? What is ritual in contemporary consumer society? How does gambling emancipate us from the market? What is Consumer Culture Theory? And how has advertising shaped culture and brought order to the world? This is a book that will fascinate, stimulate, and provoke new ways of seeing the world of the consumer. It is about a very vibrant and fresh perspective on consumption that has emerged in the past three decades and clearly has come of age. Russell Belk Kraft Foods Canada Chair in Marketing, Schulich School of Business, York University (Past President & Fellow, ACR)CCT is AOK. This book brings together some of the most effervescent thinking in Consumer Culture Theory. It is the Sprite of scholarship - refreshing, invigorating and deliciously subversive. Exploring Consumer Culture Theory is intoxicatingly imaginative. Enjoy. Stephen Brown, Prof of Marketing, Ulster University This book is an exploration of new ideas, new topics, new ways of thinking and writing. It will bring bright light and some heat to the debate. Exploring Consumer Culture Theory is an important step forward. Grant McCracken (Industry consultant, author, leading consumer behavior theorist, and anthropologist)This second installment (of what one hopes will be many) of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) conference papers delivers on CCT's promise of pluralism – in directions, inclusions, articulations, applications, theoretics and poetics. It is a must-read for marketers or social scientists with an eye on consumption. This volume invites and incites. Rita Denny, Founding Partner, Practica Group, LLC Eileen Fischer and John Sherry have put together a fine collection of writings from talented contributors whose insights and deft analyses demonstrate, in a variety of ways, how consumption informs and is informed by meaning-making practice. The critical school of social thought at its best, debunking but constructive, and full of imagination. Last not least, the book is well-written and neatly structured, a superb primer of environmental citizenship." Professor Wolfgang Sachs, editor of The Development Dictionary, Wuppertal Institut, Germany."An impressive set of contributors take us on a critical tour through the vast territory of environmental politics. Visiting along the way numerous essential ideas, thinkers, issues, and cases, this collection firmly and thoroughly establishes the proper place of critique in all its varieties at the heart of environmental affairs." 1 in stock

Book SynopsisEffective leadership and management in health and social care are built on good practice, strong relationships and a critical understanding of the wider context in which care takes place. Leading, Managing, Caring illustrates how leadership and management work in everyday settings, providing invaluable support to those practising or studying in the area. The book introduces the four core building blocks of the caring manager or leader: personal awareness, team awareness, goal awareness and contextual awareness. Together these form a firm foundation for understanding and practice. Drawing on up-to-date case studies, the authors explore how critical theoretical understanding can support practical attempts to work through complex situations with a diverse range of people. Also included is a toolkit containing carefully selected and practical tools for leading and managing change. This comprehensive textbook is suitable for existing and aspiring managers and leaders in a range of health and social care professions, or anyone interested in understanding more about the complex landscape in which care services are managed and delivered in the UK.Trade Review'This book is quite ground-breaking in management literature, particularly as it is applied in management of care. It brings many values and approaches from a wide range of professional fields, but keeps a perspective on the responsibilities of a manager to their employers as well as to service users. It has a fresh and confident voice that will be very encouraging and inspiring for new and experienced managers. • Economic Methodology And Freedom To Choose

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1987, Professor O'Sullivan's work provides an in depth philosophical examination of the foundations of method in Economics and other human sciences. The argument is unabashedly dialectical in the great Socratic-Platonic tradition, and the reissue will be very welcome to all students of methodology, in particular those students of economic methodology seeking a refreshing alternative to yet more mathematical game playing. In an age dominated and perhaps to an extent perplexed by an ultimately non-committal postmodernism the book provides a root and branch critique of the epistemological relativism which must lie at the root of the whole post-modernist approach; and in reasserting the fundamental importance not only for the methods of science but also for European civilisation of the pursuit of truth it takes a stance which is very much against the tide of the times. A heterodox perspective is also provided and defended in detail regarding the real nature of economic methodology whereby it is shown that Economics epitomises a teleological mode of explanation which is significantly different from the efficient causal modes of explanation of the natural sciences. In fact Economics is the ultimate subjectivist/interpretative discipline in the methodological sense of Max Weber and Alfred Schutz, a fact which has only been recognised (and welcomed) in the Austrian school of Economics.Trade Review'O'Sullivan's thought-provoking work is a significant addition to the rapidly expanding literature on economic methodology.'- R.S. Book SynopsisFirst published in 1985, Thomas Sowellâs book is a crisp, lucid and commonsensical introduction to Marxâs own writings and to Marxist theory. It combines readability with intellectual rigour and distils more than a quarter of a century of Thomas Sowellâs research and thought on the philosophical and economic doctrines of Karl Marx. Its central theme is that Marxian philosophy must be understood before Marxian economics can be defined. The book discusses Marxâs ideas, including his philosophy of history, concept of capitalist exploitation, morality and business cycle theory. The authorâs treatment is balanced, though often critical and displays a mastery of Marxâs own writings which are liberally extracted throughout the text. Trade Review‘Among the best short accounts of Marxism ever, whatever the reader’s own politics are. I found it a real pleasure to read, clear and tight, full of both common sense and intellectual rigour.’ – Bernard Crick‘Very readable … The non-Marxist Mr Sowell is distinctly successful in opening up the scope and brilliance of Marx’s very interesting mind.’ – Brigitte Berger, New York Times Book ReviewTable of Contents1.
