Book SynopsisModern-day markets do not arise spontaneously or evolve naturally. Rather they are crafted by individuals, firms, and most of all, by governments. Like statecraft, marketcraft represents a core function of government, and it requires considerable artistry to govern markets effectively. In Marketcraft, Steven K. Vogel builds his argument upon the recognition that all markets are crafted and then systematically explores the implications for analysis and policy. Vogel marshals a wide range of policy examples to support this concept, focusing in particular on the U.S. and Japan. He examines how the U.S., the freest market economy, is actually among the most heavily regulated advanced economies, while Japan''s effort to liberalize its economy in the 1990s counterintuitively expanded the government''s role in practice. In our era--and despite what anti-government ideologues contend--government officials, regardless of party affiliation, should be trained in marketcraft just as much as in statecraft.Trade ReviewThe book is a welcome addition to the literature arguing for a conceptual renovation of the analysis of market governance in two major ways: First and unlike other studies focusing on single countries (Eisner, 2014; Singer, 2015), Vogel develops a narrative based on two carefully selected case studies that allow him to demonstrate the validity of his argument more broadly. Second, he also provides concrete advice for scholars and policy makers on how to incorporate this perspective into their research and practice. * Jonathan Krautter, Contemporary Japan *In an age of market fundamentalism, Steven Vogel provides a timely and powerful reminder that real markets require rules - and 'free markets' require the most. Tired rhetoric about government vs. the market doesn't just make little sense; it makes for terrible policy." -Jacob S. Hacker, Director, Institution for Social and Policy Studies, Yale University, and co-author of American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America ProsperSteven Vogel's Marketcraft provides the language and the concepts we need to break out of the tiresome and unproductive debate over reliance on markets or government to manage the economy. He demonstrates definitively that states structure markets. He shows that our focus should be on how states do marketcraft and who benefits from particular policy choices." -Fred Block, Research Professor, University of California, Davis, and co-author of The Power of Market FundamentalismThis is a profound and important book. The wonders of efficiency that we call markets are not self-created but constructed, and they need governments to thrive. At a time when globalization and information technology create novel market platforms that carry new promises, new dangers, and new fears, Steve Vogel's thoughtful pro-market argument has never been more relevant." -Nicolas Véron, Senior Fellow at both Bruegel and the Peterson Institute for International EconomicsBuilding on decades of comparative research into advanced industrial societies, Vogel lays out in impressive detail the myriad ways in which governments, private sector institutions, social practices, and cultural norms construct and shape markets. It makes little sense to ask whether a market is free or regulated. The important questions are who governs a market, how, and for what ends." - Washington MonthlyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Chapter One: The Marketcraft Thesis Chapter Two: The Elements of Marketcraft Chapter Three: Marketcraft American Style: Why the World's "Freest" Market Economy is the Most Governed Chapter Four: Marketcraft Japanese Style:Why It Is So Hard to Craft a Liberal Market Economy Chapter Five: Marketcraft in Theory and Practice References

  • The Poverty Paradox Understanding Economic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe paradox of poverty amidst plenty has plagued the United States throughout the 21st century - why should the wealthiest country in the world also have the highest rates of poverty among the industrialized nations? Based on his decades-long research and scholarship, one of the nation''s leading authorities provides the answer. In The Poverty Paradox, Mark Robert Rank develops his unique perspective for understanding this puzzle. The approach is what he has defined over the years as structural vulnerability. Central to this new way of thinking is the distinction between those who lose out at the economic game versus why the game produces losers in the first place. Americans experiencing poverty tend to have certain characteristics placing them at a greater risk of impoverishment. Yet poverty results not from these factors, but rather from a lack of sufficient opportunities in society. In particular, the shortage of decent paying jobs and a strong safety net are paramount. Based upon this understanding, Rank goes on to detail a variety of strategies and programs to effectively alleviate poverty in the future. Implementing these policies has the added benefit of reinforcing several of the nation''s most important values and principles. The Poverty Paradox represents a game changing examination of poverty and inequality. It provides the essential blueprint for finally combatting this economic injustice in the years ahead.Trade ReviewMark Robert Rank's ambitious book, The Poverty Paradox, is said to be "a game changing examination of poverty and inequality. It provides the essential blueprint for finally combatting this economic injustice in the years ahead". * Craig R. Roach, New York Journal of Books *Mark Rank, one of America's great poverty scholars, has done it again. In crystal clear prose, The Poverty Paradox walks readers through what we know about poverty in the United States, forwards a framework to understand why it persists, and offers evidence-strategies for how we can confront it. It will offer fresh insights to new students, long-time experts, and policymakers alike. * H. Luke Shaefer, Hermann and Amalie Kohn Professor of Social Justice and Social Policy at the Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan *After reading Rank, Christians might decide that their vested interests should be in structures that alleviate wealth as much as those that alleviate poverty. * Adam Vander Tuig, The Christian Century *Recommended. Book SynopsisOur current legal system is to a great extent the product of an earlier period of social and economic transformation. From the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, as accountability for industrial-age harms became a pervasive source of conflict, the U.S. legal system underwent profound, tectonic shifts. Today, ownership of information-age resources and accountability for information-age harms have become pervasive sources of conflict, and different kinds of change are emerging. In Between Truth and Power, Julie E. Cohen explores the relationships between legal institutions and political and economic transformation. Systematically examining struggles over the conditions of information flow and the design of information architectures and business models, she argues that as law is enlisted to help produce the profound economic and sociotechnical shifts that have accompanied the emergence of the informational economy, it is too is transforming in fundamental ways. DraTrade ReviewJulie Cohen, a legal scholar, is the latest to undertake the challenge of charting that process for an information-driven culture. While her book follows on other ambitious, synthesizing work such as Shoshana Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism and Nicolas Suzor's Lawless, it uniquely offers a detailed look at how the rise of powerful information intermediaries operates within and with the active assistance of legal, regulatory and political systems. * International Journal of Communication *

  • Singapore

    Oxford University Press Inc Singapore

Book SynopsisWhen Lee Kuan Yew died recently, the world media turned its attention to the nation he led for decades: Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew''s revolutionary transformation of Singapore from a poor and corrupt colonial backwater into an economic powerhouse renowned for its wealth, order, and rectitude is one of the great--and most surprising--stories of modern era. In Singapore: Unlikely Power, John Perry provides an evenhanded and authoritative history of the island nation that ranges from its Malay origins to the present day. Blessed with a natural deepwater port that is shielded by mountain ranges from oceanic storms and which sits along one of the most strategic straits in the world, Singapore has served as a major shipping entrepot throughout modern history. The first great naval power to exploit the island''s strategic location was China, and during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries thousands of Chinese emigrated to Singapore. The most famous colonizer, though, was Britain, which ruled Singapore until the 1960s except for when the Japanese occupied it during World War Two. From the early nineteenth century onward, Singapore was a vital node in the global economy, which relied on oceanic shipping and the protection of the British Navy. Perry covers all of this before turning to the era of independence, which began in the 1960s. Plagued with the usual assortment of ills that former colonies in the tropics suffered from--corruption, inequality, lack of an educated population--Singapore improbably vaulted from essentially third-world status into a first world dynamo over the course of three decades. In the process, longtime leader Lee Kuan Yew did many things that other post-colonial leaders shunned. He embraced the colonial past, established close ties with its World War Two tormentor (Japan), and adopted a resolutely pragmatist approach to economic development rather than following any one fashionable ideological program. Today, it is one of the wealthiest and best educated countries in the world, and it is a model regime for states looking to develop rapidly but which are relatively unconcerned with freedom or democracy (although Singapore itself is a democracy). In sum, this is an accessible, comprehensive, and indeed colorful overview of a city-state that has perfected one of the most influential political-economic models in the world.Trade Review"John Perry, a maritime and diplomatic historian, provides a unique perspective on Singapore, a remarkable port city that, like Hong Kong and Bahrain, was a British colony and became the business, service, and intellectual headquarters for a region. He traces here how Singapore, a multi-racial, multi-cultural city, has developed unique social policies and officials who provide world-class leadership in the councils of the world." --Ezra Vogel, Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences, emeritus, Harvard University; author of Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China "The story of Singapore is the story of the 21st century: asymmetric and creative approaches to foreign policy that provide opportunity, stability, and multicultural engagement. There is so much to learn from the City of Lions, and John Curtis Perry is the perfect guide. This is a profoundly important book for anyone studying international relations." --Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret), NATO Supreme Allied Commander 2009-2013, and Dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University "For narrative, perfection of pace; for description, a lively eye; for scholarship, tenacity and depth; breadth for the delineation of context and comparisons; insight in character-depiction, and provocation in judgement: John Perry has the qualities to make enlightening work of his study of 'the Singapore grip': the city-state's stunning story of response to daunting challenges." --Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, William P. Reynolds Professor of History, University of Notre Dame "John Perry's brisk and engaging Singapore: Unlikely Power situates the Southeast Asian city-state in its historical context, and shows convincingly how over the course of two centuries visionary leaders have fused political will and geographic advantage to create a globalized economic powerhouse." --Lincoln Paine, author of The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World "Meticulously researched and holistic in approach, Perry's narrative seamlessly balances insights and perspectives on the past, present and future of the island and region. An ideal read for anyone who has wondered about the global forces that created the modern commercial city-state-and why it exists where it does." --Daniel Finamore, Russell W. Book SynopsisAn authoritative and practical guide to business ethics, written in an accessible question-and-answer formatIn today''s turbulent business climate, business ethics are more important than ever. Surveys of employees show that misconduct is on the rise. Cover stories reporting indictments, prosecutions, and penalties imposed for unethical business conduct appear almost daily. Legislatures pass requirements elevating the levels of punishment and their enforcement against corporations and individuals. Organizations face pressure to design and implement effective ethics and compliance programs. As a result, businesses and businesspeople are increasingly worried that their conduct might cross lines that put their wealth and reputations at risk. Business Ethics: What Everyone Needs to Know explains what those lines are, how not to cross them, and what to do when they are crossed. Written for both businesspeople facing real-life dilemmas and students studying ethical questions, this succinct Trade ReviewNelson and Stout have written a readable and eminently usable book that answers the questions that real business people—whether they are organizational leaders or middle managers or entry employees—wonder and even worry about. What's more, their answers are informed and supported by research but presented in a directly applicable manner. Most importantly, their responses are in themselves 'tools' and 'scripts' for those of us who want to behave in accordance with our best values. And the research presented here clarifies that this is most of us. * Mary C. Gentile, author of Giving Voice To Values: How To Speak Your Mind When You Know What's Right, and Creative Director of Giving Voice to Values *This is a well-written book for anyone interested in corporations and their conduct. It's an excellent resource for students and faculty. * Timothy Fort, Eveleigh Professor of Business Ethics, Kelley School of Business *When two prominent legal scholars put their personal stamp on the issue now galvanizing the planet, how ethics fits in with modern business, it is time to pay attention. * Thomas Donaldson, Mark O. Winkelman Professor, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania *What do we owe—if anything—to those we do business with? Business Ethics: What Everyone Needs to Know provides pragmatic answers to tough questions, drawing on legal requirements, professional standards, and classical philosophy. It should be your go-to-guide, especially in these rapidly changing and often competitive times. * Michael Wheeler, Emeritus Chaired Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School *This book by J. Nelson and L. Stout exhibits several virtues. First, it is accessible even to those not yet acquainted with the subject matter. It is disgraceful that intellectuals writing on business ethics tend to adopt a language that lay intelligent people cannot follow. Second, the book does not defend, in a aprioristic manner, one position over others. Rather, it clarifies pros and cons of the main theses on the subject in a balanced and fair way. Finally, this book comes out at a time characterized by the emergence of problems such as environmental degradation, pandemics, the explosion of income and wealth inequalities, problems that cannot be solved without the active intervention of businesses. Whence the great relevance of an ethical approach capable of directing their behaviour toward the common good. * Stefano Zamagni, Professor of Economics, University of Bologna and SAIS Europe of the Johns Hopkins University *This book contains extremely useful, science-based guidance as to how we can act more ethically and effectively influence others in our organizations to do the same. * Robert Prentice, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin *This comprehensive and accessible book, brings to the table everything one needs to know about business ethics. It addresses all the major questions and reviews in a highly clear way the relevant legal and management literatures. A fantastic achievement for Prof. J.S. Nelson and the late Prof. Lynn Stout. * Yuval Feldman, author of The Law of Good People, and Faculty of Law, Bar-Ilan University *This is a wonderful book that finally provides comprehensive guidance on how to understand and respond to business ethics challenges today. The current state of business ethics is placed firmly in historical context, and the writing is sharp and free of the jargon that dominates this field. * Alison Taylor, Executive Director, Ethical Systems, NYU Stern School of Business *An invaluable resource concerning business ethics. The chapters on compliance systems are particularly useful. * Gideon Mark, University of Maryland Smith School of Business *The book focusses on what are the most important concepts and tools for businesspeople and compliance professionals to comprehend well. It address what to do, how to do it and why to do it. It is an excellent book and important not only for businesspeople and students, but for Compliance Professionals: We see them all the time stuck in legal and paper-program issues. They more than all others should read it (and will love it). * Matthias Kleinhempel, Head of the Center for Governance & Transparency, IAE Business School *Business Ethics is a timely yet evergreen resource for students and business leaders. Nelson and Stout bring together decades of academic research and literature in this clear and practical guide on ethical behavior and dilemmas in modern business. * Elizabeth Pollman, Professor of Law and Co-Director of Institute for Law and Economics, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School *There is no doubt in my mind that this information will be useful to students and business people and that it is not discussed enough. * Art Hinshaw, Clinical Professor of Law, Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University *An outstanding introduction to business ethics, including individual ethical decision making, leading ethical organizations, and the related legal issues. Each chapter covers an essential topic in business ethics and is organized around the key questions for that topic. This user-friendly format is valuable for the first-time reader and for returning to the book for advice in the future. This introduction to business ethics should be of value to everyone from business students to corporate leaders. The reader will become fully informed on the key managerial and legal issues related to ethics, compliance, and corporate social responsibility. * David Hess, Professor of Busines Law and Business Ethics, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan *Table of ContentsChapter 1: An Overview of Business Ethics Chapter 2: The Benefts of Acting Ethically Chapter 3: Moral Philosophical Bases for Business Ethics Chapter 4: What Does Science Tell Us About Ethical Behavior? Book SynopsisThe relentless increase of inequality in twenty-first century America has confounded analysts from both ends of the political spectrum. While many can point to particular contributing causes, so far none of the policies that have been enacted-not just in the United States but in other advanced countries-have been able to lessen the wealth and income gaps between the top decile and the rest. Critics on the left are more forceful critics of rising inequality, and they tend to blame capitalism and the private sector. Predictably, they see solutions in government action. Many on the right worry about the issue, too, but they come from a position that is more sanguine about corporations and more suspicious of government. Book SynopsisAfter a period of tremendous upheaval, it is necessary for organizations to transform alongside their employees and welcome new ways of working. While it is impossible to predict which changes will be successful, it is crucial for leaders to now ask: what should work look like to achieve productive, healthy, and safe organizations? In Brave New Workplace, Julian Barling argues that we should focus on creating environments in which employees can flourish, rather than relying on the resiliency of workers to withstand difficult working conditions. Synthesizing centuries of research from scholars such as Abraham Maslow, Fred Herzberg, and Richard Hackman, among others, Barling identifies seven elements that are key to building an exceptional workplace: high quality leadership, autonomy, belonging, fairness, growth, meaning, and safety. Throughout the book, chapters touch on pressing issues affecting today''s organizations such as working through crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of gender differences on people''s experiences in the workplace. Book SynopsisA STIRRING EXAMINATION OF A LOOMING CRISIS Virtually everyone has taken antibiotics. They can be lifesavers -- or they can be useless. But what are they? How are they used? And what happens as the effectiveness of antibiotics begins to decline? Antibiotics: What Everyone Needs to Know examines the personal and societal implications of our planet''s most important -- and arguably most overused -- medications. In a question-and-answer format, it unpacks the most complicated aspects of this issue, including: How antibiotics are used (and overused) in humans, plants, and livestock The consequences to date, and the potential crisis ahead, as overuse of existing antibiotics breeds new resistance in bacteria How the globalized world enables antibiotic resistance more quickly Collateral damage, individually and societally, of antibiotic use The difficult decisions ahead related to medical care and the food systemGrounded in the latest scientific research and translated for general readers, AntTrade Review"Wilson's final two chapters are notable for suggesting methods to reduce the need for antibiotics and presenting newer approaches to diagnosing and treating bacterial infections." --Tony Miksanek, BooklistTable of ContentsACKNOWLEDGEMENTS PREFACE Why should you read this book? Book SynopsisWhether members of the family are headed to school or work, smartphones accompany family members throughout the day. The growing sophistication of mobile communication has unleashed a proliferation of apps, channels, and platforms that link parents to their children and the key institutions in their lives. While parents may feel empowered by their ability to provide their children assistance with a click on their smartphone, they may also feel pressured and overwhelmed by this need to always be on call for their children. This book focuses on the phenomenon of transcendent parenting, where parents actively use technology to go beyond traditional, physical practices of parenting. In drawing on the experiences of intensely digitally-connected families in Singapore to tell a global story, Sun Sun Lim argues how transcendent parenting can embody and convey, intentionally or not, the parenting priorities in these households. Book SynopsisThis book examines the electoral successes of anti-system forces in the rich democracies. It explains the rise of anti-system politicians and parties in terms of two separate but closely related developments: the rise of economic inequality and insecurity over the last four decades, and the failure of technocratic elites to address them.Trade ReviewJonathan Hopkin offers a well-researched book which identifies connections between the anti-system politics in the United States, Britain, Greece, Spain and Italy. He finds there is a clear divide in how Northern and Southern Europe express their forms of anti-system politics. • The Populist Temptation

Oxford University Press Inc The Populist Temptation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the last few years, populism -- of the right, left, and center varieties -- has spread like wildfire throughout the world. The impulse reached its apogee in the United States with the election of Trump, but it was a force in Europe ever since the Great Recession sent the European economy into a prolonged tailspin. In the simplest terms, populism is a political ideology that vilifies economic and political elites and instead lionizes ''the people.'' The people, populists of all stripes contend, need to retake power from the unaccountable elites who have left them powerless. And typically, populists'' distrust of elites shades into a catchall distrust of trained experts because of their perceived distance from and contempt for ''the people.'' Another signature element of populist movements is faith in a savior who can not only speak directly to the people, but also serve as a vessel for the plain people''s hopes and dreams. Going back to the 1890s, a series of such saviors have come and gone in the US alone, from William Jennings Bryan to Huey Long to -- finally -- Donald Trump. In The Populist Temptation, the eminent economic historian Barry Eichengreen focuses on the global resurgence of populism today and places it in a deep context. Alternating between the present and earlier populist waves from modern history, he argues that populists tend to thrive most in the wake of economic downturns, when it is easy to convince the masses of elite malfeasance. Yet while there is more than a grain of truth that bankers, financiers, and ''bought'' politicians are responsible for the mess, populists'' own solutions tend to be simplistic and economically counterproductive. Moreover, by arguing that the ordinary people are at the mercy of extra-national forces beyond their control -- international capital, immigrants, cosmopolitan globalists -- populists often degenerate into demagoguery and xenophobia. There is no one solution to addressing the concerns that populists raise, but Eichengreen argues that there is an obvious place to start: shoring up and improving the welfare state so that it is better able to act as a buffer for those who suffer most during economic slumps. For example, America''s patchwork welfare state was not well equipped to deal with the economic fallout that attended globalization and the decline of manufacturing in America, and that played no small part in Trump''s victory. Lucidly explaining both the appeals and dangers of populism across history, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand not just the populist phenomenon, but more generally the lasting political fallout that follows in the wake of major economic crises.Trade ReviewThe Populist Temptation is strongly recommended for scholars interested in the economic roots and consequences of right wing populism, and, more broadly, those utilizing historical comparative narratives. Furthermore, the effort of the author to refer to the impacts of populism in the EU makes it also valuable for scholars of European public policies or interested in the future of the EU. * Hugo Marcos-Marne, Democratization *Barry Eichengreen is the world leader in distilling the lessons of economic history for the policy makers of today. This important book is the best we yet have on populism and the antidotes it demands. * Lawrence H. Summers, President Emeritus and Charles W. Eliot University Professor, Harvard University *No one makes economic history relevant to today while doing justice to the past like Barry Eichengreen. The Populist Temptation is the best of American and European perspectives on the worst of current EU and US politics. Sobering and sensible, this is a necessary interpretative guide to our times. * Adam S. Posen, President, Peterson Institute for International Economics *Finally, a superb book that places populism in its proper historical context. And who better to write it than Barry Eichengreen, a master at shedding light on our contemporary economic problems from a historical perspective? Eichengreen brilliantly describes the backlash unleashed by economic difficulties and dislocation periodically throughout history, and the varying success of political regimes to rise to the challenge. Historical treatments with their focus on deeply rooted processes can be fatalistic. Eichengreen nicely sidesteps that trap, with a hopeful, constructive message pointing the way forward. * Dani Rodrik, Harvard University *In The Populist Temptation, Barry Eichengreen, amongst the foremost international economists today, explains why we are seeing an outburst of populist movements across the industrial world, and how they mirror similar movements from history. He argues that while the populists have genuine grievances, the solutions their leaders propose are unlikely to work. Eichengreen is skeptical that populists' concerns can be addressed easily. However, his insightful analysis is an essential starting point for anyone who wants to understand one of the most important developments of our times. * Raghuram G. Rajan, Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance, University of Chicago *Barry Eichengreen has written a characteristically lucid book on the contemporary threat of populism... * The Financial Times *The publication of these excellent books is therefore timely... Amid a surge in such publications on a changing world they stand out for their clarity of analysis and writing. * Paschal Donohoe, The Irish Times (referring to both The Populist Temptation and Ctrl Alt Delete, How Politics and the Media Crashed Our Democracy) *Barry Eichengreen is the world leader in distilling the lessons of economic history for the policy makers of today. Book SynopsisCountries in the Middle East have very different economies, even if they are often grouped together. In The Economics of the Middle East, James Rauch focuses on the drivers of their distinctiveness, including the effects of their natural endowments, geographic locations, and interactions with the global economy. This book evaluates the socioeconomic trajectories of three groups of Middle Eastern States: Sub-Saharan African, fuel-endowed, and Mediterranean. It compares these groups both to each other and to developing countries in other regions with similar characteristics. Rauch draws on basic approaches to economic development to enhance understanding of important issues, such how policies on gender, education, health, and the environment affect development. His comparative perspective sheds light on how and why the Arab countries, Iran, and Turkey have done better or worse than similar countries in other regions. His analysis throughout is supported by data that are well organized andTrade ReviewJames Rauch's The Economics of the Middle East examines important issues facing the region from the perspective of fundamental economic principles and, in doing so, fills an important gap in the literature. It provides scholars a clear, empirically rich discussion of international trade and industrialization, human development and inequalities, environmental challenges, and other critical issues facing the Arab world, Iran, and Turkey. * Ellen Lust, Professor of Political Science; Founder and Director, Program on Governance and Local Development, University of Gothenburg *The book provides students from economics, political science, and public policy with an accessible overview of economic theory, allowing them to better understand the subsequent chapters which explain why the Arab region lags behind other middle income countries in economic and human development. Book SynopsisInternational trade and trade policy have become increasingly important and complex in recent years. In this comprehensive introduction to the key aspects of international trade policy, noted authority Anne O. Krueger explains what has happened and why these issues are so difficult. With evidence-based analysis and an even-handed approach, International Trade: What Everyone Needs to Know lays the foundation to understand what trade does and does not do. Focusing on the importance of trade in both goods and services, Krueger explores the effects of various trade policies step-by-step and demonstrates why economists generally support free trade. Krueger considers the historical experience, highlighting how technological changes and reduction of trade barriers helped transform the world economy. Tariffs, antidumping and countervailing duties, government procurement policies, preferential trading arrangements, trade with developing countries and emerging markets, and the World Trade OrganiTrade ReviewSumming up, policymakers around the world would do well to have a copy of Anne Krueger's book and read it: a suggestion that also invites translation to other languages. This contribution is also a natural candidate for inclusion in reading lists of courses focusing on topics such as economic journalism, international trade, globalisation, Trump's policies, applied economic analysis, and international institutions. Most significantly, 'concerned citizens' around the world now have the unique opportunity of learning international trade and the high costs of trade protection from Professor Anne Krueger, one of the sharpest economic minds of our times. * Asian-Pacific Economic Literature *In International Trade: What Everyone Needs to Know, Anne Krueger of Stanford University, a distinguished international economist, explodes the myths of Mr. Trump's approach. No, one cannot reduce a country's overall trade deficit by attacking bilateral deficits. No, foreign exporters did not bear the cost of the tariffs Mr. Trump imposed. No, the US will not make the Chinese do what it wants by inflicting punishment unilaterally. No, liberal trade is not a plot against America. And no, protectionism was never going to bring back the vanished industrial jobs of the past. * Financial Times *It is hard to think of any significant aspect of trade policy that is not brilliantly covered in this eminently readable book. Professor Krueger here distills a lifetime of research and real-world experience into a fascinating guidebook covering what every concerned citizen should know about trade history and policy. * Arnold C. Harberger, Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Economics, University of Chicago *International trade and trade policies affect all consumers, producers and workers and even the fate of nations. Anne Krueger has written that rare gem: a concise, readily accessible volume on a vital topic that needs to be read by newcomers to the field and those needing a refresher course alike. * Michael J. Book SynopsisThis Handbook provides an authoritative in-depth understanding of China's progression and future global position from over sixty leading scholars on China, who explain the development of China's innovation capabilities, the causes and their views about the future direction. Xiaolan Fu, Jin Chen, and Bruce McKern bring together international scholars and experts to explain how China managed, in a very short period of time, to become the world's second-largest economyand a leader in many fields of innovation.Trade ReviewChina has gone from a relatively poor and isolated economy with a defective economic model to a powerhouse in a matter of four decades. This Handbook will help readers understand how that happened. In applying multiple lenses to understanding this complex journey, one learns about the role of the state and the private sectors, the key mindsets and policy frameworks, and China's experimental approach to finding pathways to progress in the absence of clear roadmaps. Readers will be left with little doubt that the China case is important, not only for its scale, but for real innovation in finding ways to accelerate innovation processes. As the world faces important challenges, in which accelerated innovation is a critical capability, the China experience covered in this volume holds important lessons for a wide range of developed and emerging economies. * Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate and William R. Berkley Professor in Economics and Business, New York University *At the core of the rise of China has been the formation of a strong national innovation system. In this handbook on innovation in China, sixty scholars from within and outside China analyze, how the system has been shaped by combining markets with planning, national priorities with openness and central decision-making with regional strategies. Contributions also capture important new developments in China's innovation system aiming at environmental sustainability and the promotion of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence. The handbook is a must-read for scholars, businessmen and policy makers who want to understand the history and future of China and its role in the world. * Bengt Åke Bertil Lundvall, Professor Emeritus, Department of Business and Management, Aalborg University *Table of ContentsIntroduction: China's Journey to Innovation Xiaolan Fu, Bruce McKern and Jin Chen PART I - The Development of Innovation in China: Theory, Policy and Practice 1.1. Book SynopsisMore people today get news via Facebook and Google than from any news organization in history, and smaller platforms like Twitter serve news to more users than all but the biggest media companies. In The Power of Platforms, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Sarah Anne Ganter draw on original interviews and other qualitative evidence to analyze the platform power that a few technology companies have come to exercise in public life, the reservations publishers have about platforms, as well as the reasons why publishers often embrace them nonetheless.Nielsen and Ganter trace how relations between publishers and platforms have evolved across the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They identify the new, distinct relational and generative forms of power that platforms exercise as people increasingly rely on them to find and access news. Most of the news content we rely on is still produced by journalists working for news organizations, but Nielsen and Ganter chronicle rapid changTrade ReviewThe book uncovers provides a needed starting point from which conditions of non-Western media environments can be investigated, compared, and evaluated. * B. G. Chang, CHOICE *Whatever your view of whether governments and societies should break up digital platforms, you'll agree that platform power is real. Nielsen and Ganter's book provides the most clear-sighted account yet of how platform power is reconfiguring news publishing. They offer a historically detailed, conceptually precise, and institutionally sensitive account of the deeply asymmetrical relations in which both platforms and publishers are today locked. Essential reading for those who still care about information's role in politics. * Nick Couldry, London School of Economics and Political Science *Even for those of us who study media and tech for a living, it's increasingly difficult to comprehend the last ten years of seismic disruption to the way the public discovers, consumes, and shares information. The Power of Platforms is an important book that brings welcome coherence and insight into the symbiotic and increasingly asymmetrical relationship between news publisher and platforms, how it has upended the media environment, and is transforming societies. * Vivian Schiller, The Aspen Institute *The power of corporate platforms on the distribution and consumption of news is unprecedented. Nielsen and Ganter's book is an exceptional, thought-provoking analysis of the intricate relationships between platform mechanisms and news publishing. This is truly a must-read for any student of media who wants to understand the controlling role of digital intermediaries. Book SynopsisA systematic treatment of dynamic decision making and performance measurementModern business environments are dynamic. Yet, the models used to make decisions and quantify success within them are stuck in the past. In a world where demands, resources, and technology are interconnected and evolving, measures of efficiency need to reflect that environment. In Dynamic Efficiency and Productivity Measurement, Elvira Silva, Spiro E. Stefanou, and Alfons Oude Lansink look at the business process from a dynamic perspective. Their systematic study covers dynamic production environments where current production decisions impact future production possibilities. By considering practical factors like adjustments over time, this book offers an important lens for contemporary microeconomic analysis. Book SynopsisA behind-the-scenes look at the struggles between visual journalists and officials over what the public sees--and therefore much of what the public knows--of the criminal justice system. In the contexts of crime, social justice, and the law, nothing in visual media is as it seems. In today''s mediated social world, visual communication has shifted to a democratic sphere that has significantly changed the way we understand and use images as evidence. In Seeing Justice, Mary Angela Bock examines the way criminal justice in the US is presented in visual media by focusing on the grounded practices of visual journalists in relationship with law enforcement. Drawing upon extended interviews, participant observation, contemporary court cases, and critical discourse analysis, Bock provides a detailed examination of the way digitization is altering the relationships between media, consumers, and the criminal justice system. From tabloid coverage of the last public hanging in the US to Karen-shaming videos, from mug shots to perp walks, she focuses on the practical struggles between journalists, police, and court officials to control the way images influence their resulting narratives. Revealing the way powerful interests shape what the public sees, Seeing Justice offers a model for understanding how images are used in news narrative.Trade ReviewImpressive in scope. Thoughtful in approach. Critical in significance. Bock gives us a treasure that expertly illuminates how visual media have historically been used to depict (in)justice and, importantly, provides a roadmap to guide their ethical use into the future. * T.J. Thomson, Queensland University of Technology and author of To See and Be Seen: The Environments, Interactions, and Identities Behind News Images *Through her insight and wisdom gathered through years of work as a professional and a scholar, Mary Angela Bock has produced a much needed book about the role of all stakeholders—'law enforcement, citizens, and journalists'—in shaping visual narratives about the criminal justice system and the people who are voluntarily or involuntarily part of it. This timely book covers a full range of issues, from 'embodied gatekeeping' through misrepresentation and re-contextualization in media. Far too often, the result of these imaging and viewing practices is seeing unjustly. * Julianne H. Newton, Professor of Visual Communication, University of Oregon *Bock provides a sophisticated account of how the press, the state, and its citizens use and produce visual narratives of justice. Moving between theory and practice with eloquence and ease, she makes a compelling case for why mediated citizenship depends on the recognition of visibility and voice. * Sandra Ristovska, University of Colorado Boulder and author of Seeing Human Rights: Video Activism as a Proxy Profession *A remarkable achievement! Informative, insightful and engaging. Seeing Justice is a compelling book that will engage and delight the reader. It exposes the way images about justice are created, contextualized and distributed, and how different social actors struggle for control of those processes. America''s economic inequality is shocking, poverty threatens to become a heritable condition, and our healthcare system is crumbling despite ever increasing costs. In this thought-provoking book, Edward D. Kleinbard demonstrates how the failure to acknowledge the force of brute luck in our material lives exacerbates these crises leading to warped policy choices that impede genuine equality of opportunity for many Americans. What''s Luck Got to Do with It? combines insights from economics, philosophy, and social psychology to argue for government''s proper role in addressing the inequity of brute luck. Kleinbard shows how well-designed public investment can blunt the worst effects of existential bad luck that private insurance cannot reach and mitigate inequality by sharing the costs across the entire risk pool, which is to say, all of us. The benefits, as Kleinbard shares in a wealth of data, are economic as well as social a more iTrade ReviewWhat's Luck Got to Do with It? intelligently and accessibly argues for the government's proper role in addressing the effects of brute luck as an obstacle to equality of opportunity. Combining insights from economics, philosophy, religion, and psychology, this book brilliantly creates a path to a fairer America. * Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation *Is what we earn the just desserts of hard work and deferred gratification? Or is it, in large part, the result of existential luck — where, when, and to whom we are born? In this insightful and carefully-crafted book, Kleinbard argues that existential luck is enormously important for explaining the inequities of our society as well as the ideal policy response to such inequities. Policymakers would be wise to heed Kleinbard's clarion call for greater public investments in health care, education, and child care, and to acknowledge the essential importance of insuring Americans against systemic misfortune. * Lily Batchelder, NYU School of Law, Former National Economic Council Deputy Director *With a relentless commitment to rigor and clarity, Edward Kleinbard has brought to light the unfairness of the U.S. economy and the unjustified risks that many Americans must bear. This provocative and entertaining book is a fresh look at how to complete America's social contract. Featuring Ed's legendary wit and ability to explain fiscal policy in plain English, this is a must read for anyone interested in greater economic justice. * Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, co-authors of The Triumph of Injustice *Edward Kleinbard brilliantly analyzes how luck, good and bad, affect our economic circumstances. He notes that society accepts growing inequality because we too often discount the role of good luck in a person's economic success. Book SynopsisThe Internet of Things (IoT) is the notion that nearly everything we use, from gym shorts to streetlights, will soon be connected to the Internet; the Internet of Everything (IoE) encompasses not just objects, but the social connections, data, and processes that the IoT makes possible. Industry and financial analysts have predicted that the number of Internet-enabled devices will increase from 11 billion to upwards of 75 billion by 2020. Regardless of the number, the end result looks to be a mind-boggling explosion in Internet connected stuff. Yet, there has been relatively little attention paid to how we should go about regulating smart devices, and still less about how cybersecurity should be enhanced. Similarly, now that everything from refrigerators to stock exchanges can be connected to a ubiquitous Internet, how can we better safeguard privacy across networks and borders? Will security scale along with this increasingly crowded field? Or, will a combination of perverse incentives, increasing complexity, and new problems derail progress and exacerbate cyber insecurity? For all the press that such questions have received, the Internet of Everything remains a topic little understood or appreciated by the public. This volume demystifies our increasingly smart world, and unpacks many of the outstanding security, privacy, ethical, and policy challenges and opportunities represented by the IoE. Scott J. Shackelford provides real-world examples and straightforward discussion about how the IoE is impacting our lives, companies, and nations, and explain how it is increasingly shaping the international community in the twenty-first century. Are there any downsides of your phone being able to unlock your front door, start your car, and control your thermostat? Is your smart speaker always listening? How are other countries dealing with these issues? This book answers these questions, and more, along with offering practical guidance for how you can join the effort to help build an Internet of Everything that is as secure, private, efficient, and fun as possible.Trade ReviewThe Internet of Things will be a driving economic, political, and cultural, force throughout this century. Shackelford does an excellent job of introducing readers to the many facets and implications of this technology, from how they communicate to how they challenge the global digital ecosystem. Essential reading for anyone who needs to understand our hyperconnected future. * Bruce Schneier, Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and author of Click Here to Kill Everybody *Scott Shackelford's latest book provides an essential contribution to the vital discussion about the impact of technology on society. With reader-friendly prose, he carefully walks readers through the many cybersecurity and privacy issues that arise as we become more dependent on the Internet of Things. Rather than merely outlining the problems that we face, Shackelford presents pragmatic and well-reasoned legal and policy solutions. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe World Trade Organization (WTO) is scarcely ten years old, but even in these early years of its existence it has generated debate, controversy and even outrage. Rulings on beef hormones and tuna-dolphin cases provide graphic examples of how the organization regulates and intrudes into areas of individual consumer choice, ethical preferences, and cultural habits. This deep and far-ranging impact of the WTO on peoples'' everyday lives means that it is not just an institution of interest to economists, but to everyone, a fact that was perhaps most graphically illustrated in the popular demonstrations at the 1999 Seattle Ministerial. Such protests have become a regular feature associated with most high-level meetings of the WTO. This VSI will provide a timely and carefully considered explanation of what the WTO is, what it does, and how it goes about executing its tasks. A clear understanding of the mandate, structure and functioning of the WTO is essential to appreciate the controversyTrade Review'Narlikar's engagement with public debates is exemplary - a task too rarely attempted by critical scholars in this area. This book is a timely rejoinder to the fledgling study of global governance. An exceptional introduction to the WTO, it also succeeds in doing much more than is says on the tin.' * Craig Berry, Political Studies Review *'The author obviously knows her subject...she succeeds well in giving an account of the organization that is both accessible and engaging... Most of today''s young voters, however, will be alive. In this, perhaps the most important document of the decade on the future of the world, the urgency of changing certain policy decisions, some of which threaten the very survival of the human race, is made abundantly clear. The World Commission on Environment and Development, headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, Prime Minister of Norway, was set up as an independent body in 1983 by the United Nations. Its brief was to re-examine the critical environment, to develop proposals to solve them, and to ensure that human progress will be sustained through development without bankrupting the resources of future generations. In Our Common Future, the Commission serves notice that the time has come for a marriage of economy and ecology, so that governments and theirTrade Review`a remarkably comprehensive guide to environmental concerns around the world. Book SynopsisBefore the discovery of insulin, a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes was a death sentence. One hundred years after a milestone medical discovery, ''Insulin - The Crooked Timber'' tells the story of how insulin was transformed from what one clinician called ''thick brown muck'' into the very first drug to be produced using genetic engineering, one which would earn the founders of the US biotech company Genentech a small fortune.Yet when Canadian doctor Frederick Banting was told in 1923 that he had won the Nobel Prize for this life-saving discovery, he was furious. For the prize had not been awarded to him alone - but jointly with a man whom he felt had no right to this honour. The human story behind this discovery is one of ongoing political and scientific controversy.Taking the reader on a fascinating journey, starting with the discovery of insulin in the 1920s through to the present day, ''Insulin - The Crooked Timber'' reveals a story of monstrous egos, toxic career rivalries, and a few Trade Review[uses] a blend of profound research, lively writing and personal knowledge of diabetes * Andrew Robinson, Nature *The lengthy bibliography and endnotes are a testament to the extensive research that has been carried out to produce this fascinating account. * Arpan K. Book SynopsisThe Foundations of Complex Evolving Economies seeks to offer an integrated analysis of the anatomy and physiology of the capitalist engine of generation and exploitation of technological organizational and institutional innovations - from the drivers of knowledge accumulation, to the modes in which such knowledge is incorporated into business firms, all the way to the processes of innovation-driven Schumpeterian competition and macroeconomic growth. In that, it advances the interpretation of such patterns, in terms of economies seen as complex evolving systems. The basic objects of analysis are the history of the emergence and development of modern capitalist economies and their current functionings. Book SynopsisImmiserizing Growth Fails the Poor refers to situations where economic growth does not lead to poverty reduction. How should this phenomenon be conceptualized? How often, when, and where does it occur? Why does it occur? Shaffer addresses these three sets of questions drawing on a wide range of theoretical perspectives and empirical approaches. This volume presents a conceptualization of immiserizing growth which combines the notions of failed and malevolent inclusion, being bypassed, and ''avoidably'' harmed by growth, respectively. It develops this concept of malevolent inclusion drawing on a debate in philosophy about ''doing and allowing harm''. The analysis proceeds to examine the characteristics and causes of immiserizing growth on the basis of comparable household survey data from the 1990s using multiple poverty lines and time periods, and different measures of growth and poverty. The book also explores theories, processes, and mechanisms of immiserizing growth found in a wide va

Book SynopsisThe notion that every person living amidst the relative affluence of the rich world has a right to a minimum income enabling social participation, be it frugally and soberly, holds as a fundamental matter of social justice to most people. But how can we make sure that every person has a decent minimum income allowing for a life with dignity in societies rich enough to afford such a right? How can we ensure that minimum income support is cost-effective and compatible with other goals such as promoting work effort, self-reliance, and upward mobility? How can political support for such schemes be fostered and made robust?Zero Poverty Society assesses the current state of minimum income protection in the rich world, building on original empirical analysis. It also engages with debates on topics as diverse as optimal targeting and means-testing, administrative complexity, non-take-up, behavioural economics, the political economy of minimum income protection, and basic income. • Oxford University Press Austerity from the Left Social Democratic Parties

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores how austerity came to be the predominant fiscal policy response to the Great Recession in Europe, even for centre-left governments. It examines the political consequences of this response, combining qualitative and quantitative methods and drawing on a wide range of empirical evidence.Trade ReviewBremer has written a profoundly important book on European economic policymaking. Combining deep case based research with analysis of media coverage and original survey data, he explains why mainstream political parties converged in supporting austerity policies during the 2010s. In a rich and deeply insightful book, he carefully connects the left's limited demand side policies to its earlier attempts to employ new supply side policies, and in so doing offers a novel theorization of the way ideas and electoral incentives come together to shape partisan economic policies. * Jane Gingrich, Professor of Social Policy, University of Oxford *Why do social democrats embrace austerity policies, especially in moments when the conditions are ripe for their rejection? Bjorn Bremer answers this question by reference to a double dilemma that confounds social democrats. To win elections they must attract voters for whom pro-spending policies ring deficit alarm bells. But to do so they must embrace ideas and policies that undermine their ability to provide any alternatives to deficit reduction. Coping with his dilemma leads to a constant search for 'credibility' by the left that alienates their core constituencies and invites internal strife. Social Democrats constantly seek 'credibility' on the economy. That is, to reassure the more affluent votes that they need to win elections that they will not pump up the debt and the deficit. * Mark Blyth, The William R. Rhodes '57 Professor of International Economics, Brown University *Table of Contents1: Introduction 2: Theoretical Framework 3: The Programmatic Response 4: Attitudes towards Austerity 5: Public Opinion Regarding Fiscal Consolidation in the Face of Trade-Offs 6: The Fiscal Policies of the British Labour Party in Times of Crisis 7: The Fiscal Policies of the German SPD in Times of Crisis 8: The Electoral Effects of Social Democratic Austerity Conclusion Appendices Bibliography

Book SynopsisThis book explores seven developing countries' use of technology to begin reforming the economy and government. Foregrounding the voices of policymakers and participants, it documents and critically assesses government efforts to kick-start digital transformation, and offers an exposition of the process of policymaking in the 2020s.Trade ReviewA great read for any political leader or bureaucrat looking to transform their government's digital economy. It is useful to understand what it really takes to support emerging countries who want to establish a digital public infrastructure. * Nandan Nilekani, Chairman and Co-Founder, Infosys and Founding Chairman, UIDAI *Benno saw the huge potential of the digital economy for Africa and devoted the last years of his life tirelessly working to get countries to adopt it. Many countries have begun taking up the technology but fail to adopt a whole of systems approach. Benno would I think have wanted fellow policy makers to learn from the lessons of some of the earlier adopters and what they got right - and wrong. * Vera Songwe, Senior Non-Resident Fellow, Brookings Institution and former Executive Secretary UN Economic Commission for Africa *An absolute gem for policymakers who want to turn their digital transformation aspirations into reality. The writing is refreshingly clear and devoid of jargon, making it a breeze to follow. The authors offer invaluable practical insights based on the experiences of a group of countries that have successfully navigated this complex journey. And what's more, this book doesn't shy away from the pitfalls and challenges you may encounter along the way. It's an honest, straight-talking guide that will leave you feeling inspired and confident to take action. * Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Chair, Global Digital Inclusion Partnership and Chief Digital Advisor, Centres for Disease Control Africa *This book is timely as it deals with such an important topic for my country and for many others in sub Saharan Africa and beyond. The book shows that the continent has an opportunity to fully benefit from greater digital transformation reforms, further than payment systems. Throughout, the book pays particular attention to context and respecting inclusion of multi-stakeholders in the process. Driving Digital Transformation tells us how to do this, not through giving instructions, but instead by sharing the lessons learned from other policymakers. * Blandina Kilama, Economic advisor to President Suluhu, Republic of Tanzania *Where clear measures of digital success and failure are sometimes lacking, the authors offer a full treatment of diagnosing and evaluating digital readiness. The rigorous focus on the nuances of implementation, especially in the book's Digital Economy Kit and strategy primer, make this critical reading for both scholars and practitioners! * Aaron Maniam, Deputy Secretary (Industry & International), Ministry of Communications and Information, Singapore *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface: Remembering Benno Ndulu Abbreviations and acronyms 1: Introduction to the Digital Economy Kit 2: Seizing opportunity for digital reform 3: Objectives: What is the Digital Economy Kit trying to do? 4: Assessment: Data and diagnostics 5: Multi-stakeholder dialogue 6: Strategy primer 7: A critical view on implementation 8: Conclusion References Index

It explains how change happens and why leaders so often fail.Trade ReviewThe book is a rich treasury of research and insight... It offers plenty of important lessons for leaders in any knowledge business. * Andrew Hill, Financial Times *This is a landmark study of the issues around leading professionals. The lessons are crucial to leaders of any organization that depends on highly talented, highly motivated, highly demanding individuals. They hold as true in the worlds of media and culture as they do in the traditional professions. * Lord Hall, Director General of the BBC *Empson's eloquent and superbly researched book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the challenges of organizing knowledge work and of leading knowledge workers through influence and inspiration rather than authority. * Professor Paul Adler, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California *The higher reaches of the knowledge industry are difficult places to work. And if working in these organizations is tough, leading them is even tougher. How do you lead, cajole, and win the respect of these highly motivated, skittish, and suspicious people? Laura Empson has spent years pondering these questions and Leading Professionals is the highly revealing and accomplished result. * Michael Skapinker, Contributing Editor and Columnist, Financial Times *Laura Empson has written a deeply engaging and enlightening book about the critical leadership challenges facing professional service firms. Based on extensive research and experience, this book is required reading for anyone who aspires to lead these increasingly large and diverse organizationsand for everyone who understands the central role that professionals occupy in the global economy. * Professor David Wilkins, Harvard Law School *Laura Empson tackles a hugely complex phenomenon: the nature of leadership in professional service firms, where no one wants to be a follower and leaders only survive through the consent of their colleagues. She has created a truly fascinating portrait of what it means to be a leader in such settings. The book is full of rich insights engagingly told, and often revealed in the words of the professional leaders themselves. This portrait will resonate strongly with practising and aspiring professional leaders who will find much to learn from the stories she tells and the insights she develops. Scholars of management will appreciate her work, not only for its significant contribution to academic knowledge, but also because it speaks to us directlywe are, after all, professionals and struggle with similar issues of leadership in our own working lives. * Professor Ann Langley, HEC Montréal *A richly detailed analysis of the complexities of modern professional organizations. The observations, based on more than twenty years of research, show a deep understanding of the tensions inherent in all successful firms. For those of us who lead or aspire to lead such firms, the lessons and conclusions are telling and valuable. * Philip Davidson, Managing Partner, KPMG UK *Professor Empson has made a major contribution to the literature on how professional services firms work and how they are best led. This is very well-researched and insightful analysis, based on a wealth of interviews, and written in a very readable style. All in all, a must on the reading list. * Edward Braham, Global Senior Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer *This is an exciting and challenging book. It manoeuvres extremely well between what we know, academically, about professional leadership, and the concerns of thinking practitioners. The central ideas of plural leadership, leadership constellations, and ambiguity challenge all of us to re-evaluate our notions of leading professionals. Professor Empson has made an important contribution. * Professor C. R. (Bob) Hinings, University of Alberta *Partnerships play a vital role in the modern economy. The spirit of partnership is a mystery to those who have not experienced it directly and also sometimes to partners themselves. This book is a highly readable explanation of what makes professional firms work and, importantly, how they are successfully led. * Sir Gerry Grimstone, Chairman of Standard Chartered, Deputy Chairman of Barclays *This is a must-read for anyone wondering why it is so challenging to lead in professional environments and how to do it more effectively. Empson masterfully brings together findings from research with the lived experiences of those she has studied to provide in-depth and detailed analysis of what it takes to survive and thrive in these politicized, but highly rewarding, work environments. * Professor Mary Uhl-Bien, Neeley School of Business, TCU *It's accepted wisdom that leading a professional services firm is different from other leadership roles, but very few have been able to explain why and in what ways. Laura Empson unravels this mystery, shining light deep into the underlying challenges leaders face and explaining ways to navigate them. An important book in a neglected and misunderstood area. * Hugh Verrier, Chairman, White & Case *Professor Empson has done an exceptional job making theory understandable and relevant to those actually involved in leading professional organizations whilst helping those more interested in the theory better understand how the real world works. Leading a professional organization can be lonely and Lauras research insights will help those grappling with the challenges of leadership to realize that they are not alone. * Jeremy Newman, Former Global CEO, BDO *Empsons latest book lifts the lid on the idiosyncrasies, paradoxes, and tensions of leadership in professional services firms. Featuring insights drawn from hundreds of interviews, Leading Professionals offers invaluable guidance to current / future leaders and management professionals alike. * Wim Dejonghe, Global Senior Partner, Allen & Overy *A modern global management consultancy practice contains a complex mix of people from differing backgrounds with different cultures and aspirations. Leading them is a daunting task but a task which is helped significantly by the insights within the book.
