Springer Nature Switzerland AG Mix-Design and Application of Hydraulic Grouts
Book SynopsisThis book provides guidance for the rational design and application of hydraulic grouts, based on a series of specific data (type of masonry, voids' width, targeted strength and durability level, available materials, etc.). To this end, the basic characteristics of a grout, i.e. its injectability (penetrability, fluidity and stability), its strength and durability, are taken into account by means of rational models and quantified expressions of all grout-design parameters. Thus, a holistic, rational mix design methodology for optimization of grout composition is given, permitting the preliminary design of grouts, without having to resort to multiple tests in advance. Moreover, detailed practical guidelines for grouting application and quality control, based on real case studies, are also included. The book attempts to rationalize the entire procedure of this poly-parametric decision-making, keeping however in mind the need for practical engineering solutions.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Penetrability.- Fluidity,.- Stability.- Critical value Wnom.- Strength.- Durability.- Optimization of grout performances.- Practical guidelines for the execution of grouting.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Theory and Practice of CO2 Utilization in Steelmaking
Book SynopsisThis book analyzes the mechanism of the application of CO2 in steelmaking, by looking at the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reactions of CO2 with the elements present in molten steel. This book is the first academic monograph either at home or abroad on the application of CO2 in the steelmaking field. The thermodynamic conditions of the reactions of CO2 with silicon, manganese, phosphorus, chromium, nickel, vanadium, and other elements were calculated and analyzed using the FactSage thermodynamic software, and the selective oxidation law of the above multiple elements by CO2 was also analyzed. In terms of kinetics, the interfacial reaction mechanism of CO2 was analyzed via gas isotope exchange technology, and the O2 transfer process and transfer rate between the CO2, slag, and steel were studied. In terms of materials and energy balance, how to use the high-temperature characteristics of CO2 to control the temperature of the molten pool, improve the reaction conditions of molten iron, reduce the evaporation of molten iron, and reduce the amount of steelmaking dust were introduced. Based on the experimental data, theoretical models of unit operation for the application of CO2 in steelmaking were established, including decarburization, denitrification, dephosphorization, decarburization and chromium retention, vanadium extraction, and carbon preservation, and these theoretical models were applied to the steelmaking production process, which is an important step in going from theory to practice. The above research work has opened up a new solution for energy saving and liquid steel cleaning in the iron and steel production process and represents progress in steelmaking technology. This book is used as a reference book for managers, engineering and technical personnel, and related professional teachers and students of Iron & Steel enterprises, government departments, consulting services and evaluation agencies, colleges, and secondary professional schools.Table of ContentsPreface.- Introduction.- The thermodynamics of CO2 in the steelmaking process.- The kinetics of using CO2 in steelmaking.- Materials and heat balance of the CO2 used in steelmaking.- Basic Theory of CO2 use in Refining.- The Theory of Limestone Decomposing CO2 Steelmaking.- Decarburization and chromium (Cr) yield of a chromium-containing melt by CO2.- Application of CO2 injection in the steelmaking process.- References.

Oro Editions Manual of Biogenic House Sections
Book SynopsisRecognising that buildings are a major contributor to global warming and the critical role of embodied versus operational carbon, the book focuses on houses built from materials that either sequester carbon (plants), use materials with very low embodied carbon (earth and stone) or reuse substantial amounts of existing materials. Organised by those materials (wood, bamboo, straw, hemp, cork, earth, brick, stone and re-use), and incorporating life cycle diagrams demonstrating how the raw material is processed into building components, the book shows how the unique properties of each material can transform the ways architects conceive the sections of houses. The house was selected as the vehicle for these investigations due to its scale, its role as a site of architectural experimentation, and its ubiquity. Building on the techniques of the Manual of Section, the book is comprised of newly generated cross-sectional drawings of 55 recent, modestly sized houses from around the world, making legible the tectonics and materials used in their construction. Each house is also shown through exploded axonometric, construction photographs and colour photographs of the exterior and interior. Introductory essays set up the importance of embodied carbon, the role of vernacular plant-based construction and the problems of contemporary house construction. Drawing connections between the architecture of the house, environmental systems and material economies, the book seeks to change how we build now and for the future.Trade Review"Published by ORO Editions, the book allows architects to rethink architectural cross-sections while using the raw materials of cross-sections that represent the lifeblood of buildings in their design." - World Architecture Community

Reaktion Books Concrete and Culture: A Material History
Book SynopsisAlmost three tons of concrete are produced each year for every person on the planet; only water is consumed more per head of population. Now used almost universally in modern construction, concrete polarizes opinion: provoking intense loathing and fervent passion in others. Concrete and Culture breaks new ground by charting concrete's effects on culture since its reinvention in the modern period, examining the ways it has changed our understanding of nature, of time and of materiality. This book discusses architects' responses to and uses of concrete while also taking into account the role it has played in politics, literature, cinema and labour relations, as well as in present day arguments about sustainability.

Purdue University Press Practical Construction Accounting and Financial
Book SynopsisPractical Construction Accounting and Financial Management provides instructions, training, exercises, and examples of the fundamentals that successful construction contractors must master: the ability to capture, summarize, analyze, and forecast operation data to be better informed when making project and business decisions. Typically, a project manager is not involved with data entry but is a source of data collection. Often the project manager's lack of understanding of accounting systems creates a situation where the project manager's role in the data retrieval and entry is compromised. This compromise results in poor decisions being made by the project and company managers due to inaccurate and untimely data. This book provides current and future construction professionals with an awareness of fundamental accounting concepts and financial principles to successfully manage the finances of construction companies, including accurately pricing projects based on actual overhead and profit recovery needs, successfully controlling the cost to operate a construction company through the comparison between company budgets and actual financial statements, and proactively forecasting cash needs before falling into a potential cash trap that could force the company into bankruptcy.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Arbitration Awards
Book SynopsisDrawing on his long and practical experience [the author gives] guidance which only the foolhardy would reject without good reason for doing so. With this manual beside him, many an arbitrator will, I feel sure, sleep the sounder.' - The Rt Hon The Lord Bingham of Cornhill. The preparation of an arbitrator''s award requires a rigorous approach to the consideration of submissions and evidence, and to the decisions stemming from that consideration, and the arbitrator must be competent to draft a valid and enforceable award. These tasks can be complex for any arbitrator, particularly so for the less experienced. This book has been written to provide clear and practical guidance, whilst emphasising that there is no standard method of preparing or writing an award. It includes illustrations relating to a wide range of types of award. It will be of interest to all arbitrators and those involved in the process, whether they are concerned with commodities, Trade ReviewThis book is the product of decades of practice and experience and it draws on a deep study of the process of arbitration. Although it is written for the domestic market and for arbitrations governed by the Arbitration Act 1996, it is relevant to arbitrations that are not governed by the law of England and Wales and where a reasoned award is required. Ray Turner’s book is intended to be a manual or vade mecum and it succeeds impressively. There will be few arbitrators who would not profit by having it to hand.—International Construction Law Review 'Drawing on his long and practical experience [the author gives] guidance which only the foolhardy would reject without good reason for doing so. Since the last edition of this book in 2010, the legal landscape in which architecture is practised has changed significantly: the long-standing procurement model with an architect as contract administrator has been challenged by the growing popularity of design and build contracts, contract notices in place of certificates, and novation of architect's duties. The tenth edition features all the latest developments in the law which affect an architect''s work, as well as providing comprehensive coverage of relevant UK law topics. Key highlights of this edition include: an overview of the legal environment, including contract, tort, and land law; analysis of the statutory framework, including planning law, health and safety, construction legislation, and building regulations inTrade ReviewPraise for previous editions: 'Probably the most important legal book for architects.' - Architect's Journal 'A must for every practice.
