Portrait of A A Milne

A. A. Milne remains one of Britain's most cherished storytellers, celebrated for creating the timeless world of Winnie‑the‑Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. Drawing on warmth, wit and gentle observation, Milne's writing captures the innocence of childhood while offering a quietly humorous reflection on friendship and imagination that continues to enchant readers of every generation.

Beyond his beloved children's tales, Milne was a prolific playwright, poet and essayist whose crisp prose and light touch defined an era of early twentieth‑century literary charm. His works invite readers to rediscover the simple delights of everyday life, making them enduring favourites in homes and bookshops across the UK.

Book SynopsisOnce on a Time (1917) is a fairy tale by A.A. Milne. Known more for his series of Winnie-the-Pooh stories and poems for children, Milne also wrote novels, fairy tales, and plays, including this entirely original work of fiction inspired by the author’s experience in the Great War. Addressing themes of power, conflict, and moral ambiguity, Once on a Time updates the classic fairy tale format for the twentieth century, and remains a wonderful work of fiction for children and adults alike. >While testing out a pair of magical boots, King Merriwig of Euralia, a jolly and decent ruler, accidentally instigates war with a neighboring kingdom. While he is off fighting with the cruel and egotistical King of Barodia, Merriwig’s daughter, Princess Hyacinth, is left in charge of Euralia. Despite her youth, she possesses both wisdom and a desire to do right by her people. But the Countess Belvane, the king’s mistress, has desires of her own. Jealous of Hyacinth, she hatches a plan to take control of the kingdom, causing mischief for the Princess at every turn. With the help of Prince Udo of Araby—who suffers from a strange enchantment—and his companion Coronel, Princess Hyacinth does her best to take care of Euralia until her father is able to return. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of A.A. Milne’s Once on a Time is a classic work of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book SynopsisA.A. Milne, best known as the author of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories, was a successful writer long before his children’s stories launched him to overnight success. Milne himself disliked being relegated as a children’s author. At the age of twenty-three, he was appointed the Assistant Editor of Punch. He claimed ‘I know no work manual or mental to equal the appalling heart-breaking anguish of fetching an idea from nowhere.’ Milne had a talent for regularly turning out a thousand whimsical words on lost hats and umbrellas, tennis, dogs, faulty geysers, dotty maids, women loading film in a camera, the English obsession with rank and titles, cheap cigars, and any amount of life’s other little difficulties. He was praised for being able to produce ‘with apparently effortless ease and the utmost gaiety’ articles notable for their ‘enchanting ingenuity’. But there was another, more serious side to Milne. After serving in World War 1, where he survived the Somme, Milne was invalided home with trench fever in 1916. His experiences made him a committed and vocal pacifist. War was nothing but ‘mental and moral degradation’. His fiercely argued pacifism was ahead of his time, and forms some of his most powerful work.;This selection of Milne’s articles, spanning over four decades of his life from 1910 to 1952, are collected for the first time in this volume, including his passionately argued writings on pacifism. The writings demonstrate his trademark wit, varied genius, little-known political views, and nostalgia for a lost era.
