Portrait of A A Milne

A. A. Milne remains one of Britain's most cherished storytellers, celebrated for creating the timeless world of Winnie‑the‑Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. Drawing on warmth, wit and gentle observation, Milne's writing captures the innocence of childhood while offering a quietly humorous reflection on friendship and imagination that continues to enchant readers of every generation.

Beyond his beloved children's tales, Milne was a prolific playwright, poet and essayist whose crisp prose and light touch defined an era of early twentieth‑century literary charm. His works invite readers to rediscover the simple delights of everyday life, making them enduring favourites in homes and bookshops across the UK.

Book SynopsisAlan Alexander Milne was born in Hampstead in 1882 and attended an independent school run by his father before studying mathematics at Cambridge. After university he worked as an Assistant Editor at the magazine Punch and established himself as a successful author of both plays and novels, including The Red House Mystery until, with the publication of When We Were Very Young in 1924 and Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926 his career took a very different turn. Milne continued to produce works for adults but occasionally resented the success of his children's stories, which overshadowed much of his other work. In 1952 A. A. Milne suffered a stroke after brain surgery and retired to his country home in Sussex as an invalid. He died there four years later.

Book SynopsisOnce on a Time (1917) is a fairy tale by A.A. Milne. Known more for his series of Winnie-the-Pooh stories and poems for children, Milne also wrote novels, fairy tales, and plays, including this entirely original work of fiction inspired by the author’s experience in the Great War. Addressing themes of power, conflict, and moral ambiguity, Once on a Time updates the classic fairy tale format for the twentieth century, and remains a wonderful work of fiction for children and adults alike. >While testing out a pair of magical boots, King Merriwig of Euralia, a jolly and decent ruler, accidentally instigates war with a neighboring kingdom. While he is off fighting with the cruel and egotistical King of Barodia, Merriwig’s daughter, Princess Hyacinth, is left in charge of Euralia. Despite her youth, she possesses both wisdom and a desire to do right by her people. But the Countess Belvane, the king’s mistress, has desires of her own. Jealous of Hyacinth, she hatches a plan to take control of the kingdom, causing mischief for the Princess at every turn. With the help of Prince Udo of Araby—who suffers from a strange enchantment—and his companion Coronel, Princess Hyacinth does her best to take care of Euralia until her father is able to return. Book SynopsisThe Red House Mystery (1922) is a detective novel by A.A. Milne. Known more for his series of Winnie-the-Pooh stories and poems for children, Milne also wrote novels and plays for adults, including this successful whodunnit. The Red House Mystery, Milne’s only detective novel, was highly successful upon publication and is noted for its use of an amateur sleuth as well as its intricate, puzzle-like plot. Despite earning the ire of Raymond Chandler, Milne’s novel was reprinted in the U.S. and in Britain numerous times. At his house in the English countryside, Mark Ablett hosts a small party of diverse guests including a widow and her young daughter, a retired military officer, an actress, and a young socialite named Bill Beverley. During this party, Mark’s brother Robert unexpectedly returns home from Australia, where he has been for some time. Shortly after this long-awaited homecoming, Robert is found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, and, amidst the chaos, Mark suddenly disappears. Having arrived late to the party, Tony Gillingham, with the help of his friend Bill Beverley, endeavors to investigate the mysterious events of the evening. Aided, or at least tolerated, by an uninterested police force, Gillingham does his best as an amateur detective to gather evidence leading not only to the identity of Robert’s murderer, but to the discovery of Mark’s whereabouts. The Red House Mystery is an innovative whodunnit filled with humorous quips, twists and turns, and a puzzle with which even the most seasoned reader of mysteries will struggle. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of A.A. Milne’s The Red House Mystery is a classic of British detective fiction reimagined for modern readers.
