2. Die Vielfalt der Alten Testamente. 3. Die Bedeutung jüdischer Bibelauslegung im Diskurs über die Schrift. 4. Das Problem der Anschlussfähigkeit von Exegese und Dogmatik. 5. Die Bedeutung der Fragstellung für Homiletik und Religionspädagogik.

Book SynopsisPatristic and rabbinic biblical interpretations are significant contributions to the identity construction of late antique Christian and Jewish groups. The contributions in this conference volume illuminate the reception of biblical texts, themes and figures in patristic and rabbinic writings from the 2nd to the 8th century. They reveal processes of mutual demarcation, which are sometimes extremely polemical, sometimes only implicit and indirectly accessible. The correct interpretation of Scripture is claimed for one's own "we", while at the same time distinguishing it from the "others". Nevertheless, similarities and mutual positive references are clearly recognizable. Especially the often so polemical Christian interpretation is from the beginning rooted in the Jewish tradition and based on it. But also the rabbinic interpretation shows traces of the controversy with Christianity.

Book SynopsisPhilo of Alexandria and Flavius Josephus are amongst the most influential ancient writers. In his long scholarly career, Per Bilde (1939–2014) published various essays, studies and articles examining early Judaism and the historical Jesus from the angle of the work of Philo and Josephus. Many of the articles contain in-depth treatment of primary sources, and thus are of great value for scholars to come. The studies in this volume have yet been compiled by Per Bilde himself. They are now edited posthumously with contributions from Steve Mason (Groningen) and Mogens Müller (Copenhagen) responding to Bilde's work.

  • Wrestling with Isaiah: The Exegetical Methodology

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Wrestling with Isaiah: The Exegetical Methodology

Book SynopsisCampegius Vitringa (16591722) of Franeker University was a biblical scholar of considerable influence for the first half of the 18th century. Similar to that of Calvin, his exegetical methodology attempts to walk a via media between the historicism of Grotius (1583-1645) and the Christocentrism of Cocceius (16031669). His magnum opus was a widely-acclaimed commentary on Isaiah (1720). Vitringa scholars have charted his influence along a historical-critical trajectory (including Schultens, Venema, Alberti, Manger, Delitzsch, and Gesenius) and along a Pietistic trajectory (including Franke, Lange, and Bengel, leading toward Lessing, Herder and German Idealism). The book includes the first biography in English and compares his hermeneneutical theoria with his praxis. It analyzes Vitringas exegetical presuppositions, his remarkably high view of the Bible, and his canones hermeneuticos (highly valued by J.J. Rambach [16931735]). It shows Vitringas contextual sensitivity at every level of exegesis, commitment to New Testament normativity in the reading of Isaiah (in which redemptive history is the ultimate hermeneutical horizon), nuanced views on the historical fulfillment of prophecy, and concern for pastoral application. A scholars scholar, widely admired for his mastery of the languages and his intense historical focus in exegesis, Vitringa was also appreciated for his orthodox views, warm-hearted piety, and love for the church.

    3 in stock

  • You Shall Not Kill: The Prohibition of Killing in

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG You Shall Not Kill: The Prohibition of Killing in

    5 in stock

Book Synopsis"You shall not kill" seems to be a self-evident norm, both in modernity and in antiquity. But what does this prohibition exactly mean? Does it only apply to humans or also to non-human beings? And what about indirect or unintentional killing? Is killing legitimate under certain circumstances? The prohibition of killing was most likely a prohibition of homicide, in its original context of the Decalogue (Exod 20:13 and Deut 5:17). However, as we all know, many other texts in the Bible refer to killing humans. Moreover, killing others in war or death penalty for capital crimes does not seem to be problematic in the biblical world. Sometimes God seems to be someone, for whom people should be killed for or who wants or orders others to be killed. In a few cases, it is God him/herself who appears as the one who kills. On the contrary other opinions like humans being created in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27; 9,6) making them "god like," which implicitly prohibits killing them, or the general prohibition of killing "You shall not kill" in the Decalogue, are articulated in the Bible. The central question of this volume is whether and how biblical and non-biblical killing prohibitions function as a norm in antiquity. The contributors stem from different research fields such as ancient law, Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, New Testament, ancient Judaism, ancient history, and the church fathers. The volume covers a time spanning from the Ancient Near East up to the Christian patristic era with a look forward to Martin Luther.

Book SynopsisThe volume aims to trace the origins of the discourse of hell in the Bible and in its literary environment, and in doing so to show the historical lines of tradition from antiquity to the present day. In doing so, he asks what ethical implications the talk of hell has and how it is compatible with God's universal will of salvation in the face of the power of evil: What is the connection between the threat of hell and man's readiness to repent? How can we speak of 'hell' in the context of the (apparent) tension between God's justice and mercy, between the election and rejection of creatures? What justification is there for the hope of a reconciliation of all creatures at the end of days? What eschatological expectations of a place of permanent distance from God require constructive theological criticism? And what resonance and relevance do notions of hell have in today's world and culture?

  • Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Der Epheserbrief

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe letter to the Ephesians differs from all other Pauline letters because of its special character. In his dense and balanced language he develops Pauline theology in a comprehensive way. The death of Paul was probably the trigger for the creation of this letter. His words sound like a legacy for the next generation. He has important things to say, especially for today: With his well-formed doctrine of the church, he provides essential impetus for ecumenical dialogue. But the letter also offers valuable information for the question of how Christian life can be shaped and how faith can be lived out in everyday life. One senses that the letter was written from a prayerful attitude. His words testify to spiritual depth. You can therefore give suggestions in a special way for practicing prayer today. The interpretation aims to open up the message of the letter to the Ephesians to as many readers as possible and to arouse interest in dealing more intensively with its statements.

Book SynopsisFor 30 years, JBTh has been addressing academic theology with highly interesting topics, but at the same time to theologians in parish offices and schools, to enable them to participate in the Biblical Theology research process. In the current situation of controversy, it seeks to contribute to dialogue and orientation - all in ecumenical dialogue. Volume 30 deals with the subject of compassion and pity. For compassion seems to be a basic Christian virtue. But it is under suspicion: is compassion really what the sufferer needs? Isn''t respect the appropriate thing? And if you look at the Christian justification: Is the appropriate relationship to the suffering Christ really compassionate suffering - and not an active following? In accordance with the concept of the yearbook, the anthology first traces the biblical foundations. Central texts that are treated are Gen 6.7, Ex 34.6, the Book of Jonah, the synoptic tradition and Rom 9-11. On the basis of rabbinic discussions and the question of giving alms in Islam, the other monotheistic religions are also included. Church-historical contributions from the areas of patristics and the concept of compassio are represented as well as current problem areas in dogmatic, ethical and practical-theological questions. With contributions by Ulrike Bechmann, Margit Eckholt, Reinhard Feldmeier, Irmtraud Fischer, Matthias Franz, Ottmar Fuchs, Hermann-Josef Große Kracht, Christoph Horn, Bernd Janowski, Rebekka A. Klein, Ulrich Köpf, Matthias Konradt, Hermannn Spieckermann, Günter Stemberger, Michael Theobald, Jan-Heiner Tück and Ulrich Volp.

Book SynopsisOne of the main impulses of the Reformation was the dispute over writing. The yearbook for biblical theology asks new questions from the different theological disciplines about the historical developments, the background and the topicality of the time. The volume brings together articles on basic hermeneutic problems and on canonization from exegesis, studies on the Jewish understanding of Scripture from Jewish studies, works on the status of Scripture in different constellations from church and theological history, studies on the canon question in todays ecumenical horizon from systematic theology, and finally practical-theological and perspectives on the meaning of Scripture in various fields of activity of the church. It thus offers an overall theological contribution to the 2017 Reformation commemoration.

It raises questions concerning the possibilities and limitations of translations in their respective (church) political contexts. It becomes clear that over the ages objectives such as adherence to the text and clarity for the reader have always been a challenge and must be reconsidered with every translation.
