Book Synopsis1 Peter is a significant letter, seen by many scholars to be an ecumenical bridge and anchor. It is first and foremost about the transformative joy of faith in Jesus Christ. This commentary offers a close reading of the text from beginning to end, drawing on a multiplicity of voices and engaging in a number of foundational themes for the Christian community according to the apostolic author: hope, holiness, suffering, joy, witness, hospitality, exile, resurrection, leadership. Tackling the themes raised by the epistle including slavery, exile and refugees, patriarchy, hierarchy, oppression, gender justice, and the risk of hospitality, the book engages with these topics not only through commentary, but also through short excursuses which draw the reader more deeply into some of the difficult questions. Designed as the official commentary resource for the Lambeth Conference in 2020, and structured around the themes of the conference, the book offers a unique range of perspectives on anTrade Review"As we focus on the theme ‘God’s Church for God’s World’ in Lambeth 2020 it is God’s Word that directs and informs the Church how to live in the World. Cambridge University Press The Last Twelve Verses of Mark 25 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 25

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA study of the authenticity and interpretation of the last twelve verses of St Mark's Gospel. These verses are omitted from at least one important manuscript tradition and queried in most modern translations (though not from the NEB). Professor Farmer traces the history of the text tradition for omission back to Egypt, and argues that one important factor contributing to their omission was the dangerous teaching they seemed to contain: they appear to encourage Christians to handle deadly snakes and drink poisons to prove their faith, a practice which has been revived today by some Christian sects who accept the scriptural authority of these verses. The teaching of these verses has, however, never become established in orthodox Christianity and indeed most Christians are unaware of their doctrinal significance. Professor Farmer reviews all the textual and patristic evidence and examines the most plausible solutions that have been canvassed. This is another substantial contribution to a Table of ContentsPreface; Abbreviations; Part I. The External Evidence: 1. The witness of Eusebis; 2. The witness of Jerome; 3. Book SynopsisA study of the communal worship and private prayers of the early Christian Church, in particular the intercessory prayer passages in Paul's seven epistles. Professor Wiles is concerned to discover what these prayers reveal about Paul's ministry and his apostolic strategy. Were his assurances that he was praying continually for his readers merely polite expressions? Were his requests for their prayers sincere and serious? How did this affect his relations with the churches and his influence on them? To answer these questions the book makes a thorough analysis of the prayer passages in the light of ancient epistolary and liturgical style. It places the passages within the structure of each letter, and relates them to the dynamic situation for which each was written.Table of ContentsPreface; Texts and abbreviations; 1. Introductory; 2. Cambridge University Press The Exorcism Stories in LukeActs A Sociostylistic Reading 129 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 129

Book SynopsisThis 2004 book in English integrates detailed literary criticism of the exorcism stories in Luke-Acts with wide-ranging comparative study of ancient sources on demonology, spirit affliction and exorcistic healing. Methods from systemic functional linguistics and critical theory are explained and then applied to each story. Careful focus is placed on each narrative's linguistic functions and also on relevant aspects of its literary co-text and the wider context of culture. Implications of the analysis for the new perspective on Luke-Acts, especially the implied author's relationship with Judaism, are explored in relation to the Lukan stories' original context of reception. Largely neglected interfaces between Luke's narrative representation of exorcism and emerging academic discourse about religious experience, shamanism, health care in antiquity, ritual performance and ancient Jewish systems of impurity are probed in ways that shed fresh light on this supremely alien part of the Lukan Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'Klutz displays an extensive in contextual issues relating to exorcism, magic and shamanism … As well as becoming a standard scholarly text on the analysis of biblical exorcism narratives, this book should become an important input to debate about Luke-Acts in general.' Peter Oakes, JSNT BooklistReview of the hardback: 'Recently I heard a student describing a Scripture course as reversing the domestication of Scripture that has for so long been our practice. Reading Klutz is a welcome step in the same direction.' Sean Kealy, Review of Biblical LiteratureReview of the hardback: 'Many scholars have attempted to make linguistic theory the basis for fruitful exegesis of important biblical texts but, often, the results have been rather thin. Not so with Todd Klutz. In a very disciplined and contextually aware study, he puts sociostylistics effectively to work, with results that move the Lukan exorcism narratives to a vital position for understanding both Lukan Christology and the setting and purpose of Luke-Acts. … As well as becoming a standard scholarly text on the analysis of biblical exorcism narratives, this book should become an important input to debate about Luke-Acts in general.' Journal for the Study of the New TestamentReview of the hardback: 'This monograph is highly recommended to those who are interested in the field of Sociostylistics, exorcistic healing in the New Testament and the narrative of Luke-Acts.' Book SynopsisThe present study focuses on the theology of the Book of Jeremiah. That theology revolves around themes familiar from Israel's covenantal faith, especially the sovereignty of YHWH expressed in judgment and promise. The outcome of this theological nexus of context, person, and tradition is a book that moves into the abyss and out of the abyss in unexpected ways. It does so, in part, by asserting that God continues to be generatively and disturbingly operative in the affairs of the world, up to and including our contemporary abysses (such as 9/11). The God attested in the Book of Jeremiah invites its readers into and through any and all such dislocations to new futures that combine divine agency and human inventiveness rooted in faithfulness.Trade Review'I know of no better introduction to the book of Jeremiah than this work of a master expositor. … Buy and read!' Trade Review"This unique study provides the first full-length study of the impact that Paul's quotations had upon his audience.... It is a fresh approach to the analysis of Paul's use of scripture.... This emphasis on authority and quotation then becomes a key ingredient in Stanley's examination of Paul's Scripture quotations.... His points provide a good critique of many studies on Paul's use of Scripture.... There are a number of strengths to Stanley's study. He has provided a much needed vantage point for looking at Paul's quotations of Scripture and emphasized the audience's reaction to Scripture quotations rather than the author's use. He has also focused attention on the diverse Scripture literacy of Paul's audience. These points deserve to be considered further in Paul's use of Scripture.... Arguing with Scripture does open up much room for understanding Paul's use of Scripture. His audience-centered approach will provide a fruitful starting point for many further investigations of Paul, his readers, and the role of Scripture." -RBL (Society of Biblical Literature), 1/05Review ~ International Review of Biblical Studies, vol 51,2004/05"In our opinion, Stanley's treatment of Paul's quotations is not penetrating either in content or rhetorical analysis. As a result he can present a view of Paul's quotation process that is at odds with the organic nature of revelation and the progressive movement of redemptive history. Perhaps others can find some usefulness in this work in spite of these flaws, but we have found little. Save your money and look up the quotations yourself. And if you want rhetorical insights, read Paul along with some classical rhetorical handbooks and Greco-Roman speeches. That would even help your preaching, but this book will not." - Scott F. Sanborn, Kerux: The Journal of Northwest Theological Seminary, September 2008 -- Scott F. Sanborn"Arguing with Scripture" is a theoretically sophisticated, methodologically innovative, exegetically sound, thorough and balanced study of how the Apostle Paul used scripture to argue with opponents and to persuade members of early Christian churches. By positing different hypothetical audiences for Paul's letters, at varying levels of familiarity with Jewish scripture, Stanley moves the debate about Paul's interpretive practices in new and more fruitful directions, away from concentrating exclusively on Paul's "intentions" and toward the variety of interpretations that are possible given a variety of possible kinds of audiences. Cognizant of the views of others and in dialogue with recent scholarship, Stanley judiciously demonstrates the remarkable freedom Paul used in quoting and interpreting scripture, but this study also shows just how persuasive--and sometimes unpersuasive--Paul's rhetoric may have been in the ancient church. Stanley's own arguments are persuasive indeed."--Dale B. Martin, Professor of Religious Studies, Yale University -- Dale B. Martin * Blurb from reviewer *"Christopher Stanley has provided an insightful analysis of Paul's enigmatic use of Scripture. Why did Paul seldom explicitly quote the Old Testament? Why did he use Scripture infrequently to support his deeper theological arguments? Stanley finds the answers to these and other questions in Paul's sensitivity to his rhetorical situations and the argumentation that he tailored for each. Stanley merges the study of Paul's use of Scripture and rhetorical analysis to create a helpful, custom-made tool for interpreting the Pauline Epistles."--Duane Watson, Professor of New Testament Studies, Malone College, Canton, Ohio -- Duane Watson * Blurb from reviewer *"While not everyone will agree with all of Chris Stanley's own arguments with Paul concerning his use and abuse of scriptural quotations, Arguing with Scripture represents a quantum leap forward in the study of this dimension of Paul's intertextuality. Stanley's highly productive combination of reader response and rhetorical criticism keeps the focus on a range of effects that Paul's strategic 'rhetoric of quotations' could have had on readers/auditors of varying competencies. While previous studies occasionally touch on these issues, Stanley foregrounds them and uses them to present many fresh insights. Indeed, he succeeds in problematizing no less than nine traditional scholarly assumptions about how Paul and his readers interacted with the biblical text! This is an important scholarly contribution that is clear, concise, and reader-friendly even to non-specialists. It deserves to be read by readers of all competencies.--Mark D. Given, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield Missouri -- Mark D. Given * Blurb from reviewer *"...Stanley's book is engaging and provocative. The questions that he raises are both poignant and important."- David Lincicum, June 2006/ Vol. 49 no.2 * Journal of Evangelical Theological Society *'[A] new methodological approach which promises to offer new insights into Paul's use of Scripture...This accesible study offers the reader a tremendous amount of insight into first century Christianity, pexposing some of the fallacies that are often assumed about Paul's audiences...This book is a fresh approach to Paul's use of Scriptures that has much to offer...and will certainly be of benefit whatever side of the Maximalist/Minimalist divide one resides.' Bryan D. Lee, Themelios, Vol 32, Issue 2, January 2006 * Themelios *Stanley’s method is enlightening and can be built upon for further insight into the Pauline use of scripture… [his] study gives the NT, and specifically Pauline community, much to consider. -- Aaron White, Pastoral Intern * Mosissimus Mose, A Blog by PhD Students at Trinity College, Bristol *

It illuminates the formative years of Christianity, in the social, religious and political situation of mid-first-century Palestine.Trade Review'This is a very exciting and suggestive book. Margaret Barker strips off the varnish applied to the portrait of Jesus Christ by generations of desk bound scholars. She reveals a fresh and startling Christ, but one who is entirely believable in the diversity of first century Judaism which she has so dramatically illuminated.' The Rt Revd and Rt Hon. Richard Chartres, Bishop of London 'This is a serious book and one that will provoke much debate and reflection.' The Bible Today 'The case is argued by massive (but readable) scholarship. But does it hold together? If Margaret Barker is correct, how come this book got into the same New Testament as the letters of Paul whom it so vehemently opposed? Read her case; it will stimulate your own thinking. And then make your own mind up.' Canon Michael Perry, Church Times 'Margaret Barker makes the Book of Revelation make sense. It no longer stands apart at the edge of the Christian Bible, but appears as a key New Testament text, showing us the world of images in which the early Christians thought their religion. Margaret Barker has written a compelling book. It reshapes our understanding of early Christianity, its literature and its liturgy.' Professor David Melling, Manchester Metropolitan University"This commentary-like series of essays on the book of Revelation offers a fresh and complete interpretation of what Barker considers one of the earliest [...] NT writings...Barker's book demonstrates that there can be no convincing account of early Christian history without a proper understanding of the book of Revelation. This is a thoroughly commended survey of recent studies of the most complex and controversial of the prophetic books of the Old Testament. It explains the problems and recounts and evaluates the proposed solutions to them. From a world where temple-symbolism, ritual-enforced holiness and grotesque visions provided an unfamiliar religious setting, Ezekiel emerges as a figure who upheld human responsibility and awareness of the fundamentally spiritual nature of hope. The commentary should do much to set Ezekiel as a worthy companion alongside the congenial figures of Isaiah and Jeremiah. --Ronald E. Clements, Emeritus Professor of Old Testament Studies, King's College, University of London"the commentary contains an extensive introduction that deals with issues of date, place, authorial unity/disunity, theological themes, allusions to earlier traditions, text and versions, place inb canon, and Ezekiel in later traditions" "The introduction is followed by a concise commentary" "Offers fresh insight into the book of Ezekiel. Joyce never merely repeats another scholar's opinion but always offers his own well-informed perspective. This book is a valuable additin to the literature devoted to the book of Ezekiel and it can be highly recommended" Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, Ex pository Times Vol.119 n.10 July 2008Paul Joyce's commentary on Ezekiel is warmly commended. It is unique in the way that it concentrates on Ezekiel's theology, thereby bringing his thought to life. -- Jacob Milgrom, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies University of California at BerkeleyIt is a rare commentator who combines judicious historical research with genuine literary sensitivity, and Paul Joyce has done just that in this fresh and deeply insightful theological interpretation of the book of Ezekiel. Rich in exegetical detail but never bogged down by it, Ezekiel: A Commentary gets to the heart of Ezekiel's message, never losing sight of the thorny and fundamental question for understanding the book, What is Ezekiel saying about God and God's relation to his people? How does this most difficult to understand prophet deal with the knotty questions of divine justice and power in the wake of the crisis of exile? Learned, informative and engagingly written, this commentary is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the prophet and his by turns perplexing, bizarre, unsettling and oddly comforting message for a time of national catastrophe. -- J. Cheryl Exum, Professor of Biblical Studies, University of Sheffield"In this relatively short commentary, Paul Joyce - noted Ezekiel scholar and chair of the Society of Biblical Literature's section on 'Theological Perspectives on the Book of Ezekiel" - has given readers an eminently readable, balanced, and useful study of what is arguably the Hebrew Bible's most disturbing and perplexing prophetic book... Joyce sets out to combine a number of techniques, such as close literary readings, sensitive theological analysis, and historical reconstruction, and he does so in a such a way as to provide both a solid base of information for the novice as well as some more rigorous commentary for advanced scholars; thus, the book will prove to be just as at home on the shelves of graduate students and clergy as it will be on the shelves of seminary professors and seasoned theologians." --Brian R. Doak, Harvard University, Hebrew Studies 50 (2009) -- Brian R. Doak, Harvard University'Joyce has produced a fine commentary that will prove to be an important contribution to Ezekiel scholarship.' Both New Testament scholars and ethicists will welcome this ground-breaking work. * John Barclay, Durham University, UK *There is much exegetical and moral wisdom in this lucidly written book, a wisdom which avoids simplifications and the peril of modernizing Paul. The Paul we encounter in this book is no eccentric, but a serious moral thinker of Early Christian wrestling with problems which are not out of date, but which recur again and again in this life. * Gerd Theissen, University of Heidelberg, Germany *David Horrell's nuanced study significantly advances the conversation about Pauline ethics...Horrell's reading of Paul offers a mediating voice that suggests a way beyond certain impasses in contemporary ethical debate...Anyone who reads Horrell's richly synthetic work, therefore, will be challenged to think more precisely about matters of central importance. * Richard B. Book SynopsisThis bible commentary traces the reception of Judges through the ages, not only by scholars and theologians, but also by preachers, teachers, politicians, poets, essayists and artists. A bible commentary focusing on The Book of Judges, best known for the tale of Samson and Delilah, but full of many other rich and colourful stories. Treats the text story by story, making it accessible to non-specialists, Considers the stories of women in Judges, including Deborah, Jael, who slew Sisera, and Jephthah's daughter, sacrificed by her father. Traces the reception of Judges through the ages, not only by scholars and theologians, but also by preachers, teachers, politicians, poets, essayists and artists. Illustrates how ideology and the social location of readers have shaped the way the book has been read. Discloses a long history of debate over the roles ofTrade Review“A sometimes sober, sometimes whimsical, sometimes disturbing, sometimes delightful, and always enlightening journey through the centuries alongside all manner of Bible readers... Gunn has attempted a large feat here – to provide readers with a meaningful survey of over 2,000 years' worth of reception of the book of Judges – and has succeeded admirably. Hopefully, other volumes in the Blackwell series will live up to Gunn's example. This is an engaging and enlightening commentary that deserves attention from anyone interested in the history of the interpretation, use, and influence of the book of Judges.” The Bible and Critical Theory "In this first volume of the new Blackwell Bible Commentaries series to treat a book from the Tanak, David M. Gunn has not only provided a useful tool for students of the book of Judges but also established a new standard for biblical commentaries in general." Review of Biblical Literature "If you want to know how learned rabbis and church fathers, Puritan divines and rationalist skeptics, musicians, painters and graphic artists, guardians of public morality and improvers of children’s souls all wrested religious and moral significance from an unruly Book of Judges, this is the book for you. David Gunn selectively assembles some twenty centuries of professional and popular interpreters of the Book of Judges and provides a running commentary on how, in various times and places, these readers found meaning and instruction from the Book of Judges, often treasuring the book and sometimes recoiling from what they found to be its alien ways. Writing with humor and verve, Gunn provides thematic continuity among interpreters separated by centuries and alludes to social and political issues that help explain shifting interpretations. Mostly, however, David Gunn allows his choir to sing and his artists to imagine. The voices and illustrations have sometimes been univocal—as in consistently holding up Delilah as femme fatale. Very often they have been troubled and dissonant, finding conflicting allegories and ambiguous moral instruction in hair, heroic militarism, rapacious slaughter, sex, foxes, and sacrifice. Gunn, or rather the readers he assembles, offer eye-opening testimony that the Bible-as-cultural-force has never been a single thing, but a malleable text which people have received quite variously, depending on the changing circumstances in which they lived and the social issues they sought to address." Burke O. Long, Bowdoin College "This is an exciting new commentary series, which presents a fresh and stimulating approach to understanding biblical interpretation. Leaving behind the verse by verse analysis typically found in commentaries, this series focuses instead on the broad spectrum of interpretations that have been applied to each story/textual unit by Jews and Christians throughout the ages. Gunn’s ground-breaking volume on Judges, the first in the series to treat an Old Testament book, is filled with many new insights and stimulating analyses. Gunn demonstrates very effectively that surveying the reception history of a particular passage focuses one’s attention on key issues in an intriguing and often provocative way. Numerous perspectives for understanding each narrative in Judges are compared in a lively manner that highlights the many subtle nuances implicit in the text. Gunn’s volume is thoroughly researched and exceptionally informative, and will provide a stellar model for subsequent volumes to emulate." Alan J. Hauser, Appalachian State University "Gunn has attempted a large feat here - to provide readers with a meaningful survey of over 2,000 years' worth of reception of the book of Judges - and has succeeded admirably...This is an engaging and enlightening commentary that deserves attention from anyone interested in the history of the interpretation, use, and influence of the book Judges."
