Christian Focus Publications Ltd 2 Corinthians: The Glories and Responsibilities
Book SynopsisThe second letter to the Corinthians is Paul's personal appeal to the church he founded in Corinth, a church influenced against Paul by false prophets. In describing the type of Church Leader that is pleasing to God, Paul reveals more about himself than in any other of his writings. It is as if we can see into his soul as he lovingly points out the faulty attitudes of the church at Corinth. In addition to guidance on leadership and on other subjects he also wrote about Christian giving. Paul was eager for the church to participate in the relief fund he was putting together for poor believers in Jerusalem. His rulings on these matters need to be applied to today's church. Geoffrey Grogan is also the author of Mark: Good News For Jerusalem in the Focus on the Bible commentary series.Trade Review"I compare this commentary to a ‘spotted dick' pudding: good and wholesome with some interesting spicy bits. It certainly provides food for thought (and action)." -- Olie Bullock, Nota Bene (UCCF Magazine)

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Lives Jesus Changed: Lessons about Life from
Book SynopsisIf you look at a family album we will begin to get an idea of the events, which have occurred in the life of that particular family. John's Gospel gives a snapshot of Jesus life and the lives he changed. John's gospel tells the story of Jesus the saviour of the world who came in flesh to forgive sins. Simon Vibert invites us to come and see the lives Jesus changed. But all these characters that we meet are not the one that the people had been waiting for. Jesus was that one but all these characters were "signposts" that pointed to Jesus so that might cause us to respond. Ideal for individuals or small group studies.Trade Review"John the evangelist was a consummate chronicler and Simon Vibert's book reflects his genius... Vibert shows us how the form is the vehicle that carries the story forward. In fact we feel close to these people and are drawn into their stories." -- Paul Wells (Emeritus Professor, Faculté Jean Calvin, France and Editor in Chief of Unio cum Christo)"Lives Jesus Changed reviews sixteen cases as they appear in John's Gospel, each short chapter commenting on one of them and ending with searching questions to the reader. This book is readable, analyses with simplicity each event of persons meeting the Lord Jesus. It's language is not technical. It attempts to lead the reader into something of a structured understanding of Scripture, with sparing cross-references." -- English Churchman

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Sure I Believe! - So What?

James is a practical book, too practical in dealing with our own shortcomings, errors and sins! And it is so direct that we cannot easily dismiss or escape from James' teaching. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Joel & Obadiah: A Mentor Commentary
Book SynopsisIn this book you discover the theme of Joel: The day of Yahweh. You will also discover more about who one to whom the day belongs to - Yahweh. The people were facing devastating calamity and Joel calls the society to repent in order that they might escape this judgment and once again enjoy mercy and favour of Yahweh. Obadiah also focuses on the dual aspects of the theme both that there is Judgement and that blessing.Mentor commentaries retain a high view of scripture whilst interacting with other research from differing theological viewpoints.Trade ReviewThis is a fine commentary, exhibiting careful and balanced Old Testament scholarship expressed in attractive, vigorous prose. I did not find a sentence that was not clear: Controversial issues affecting interpretation are well handled, for example the question as to whether the locusts in Joel 2 are literal or picture an invading army. The author argues well for an early date for Joel while recognising the complexity of the issue and presenting contrary viewpoints clearly and fairly. -- Dr. Geoffrey Grogan ( (1925-2011), Principal of Glasgow Bible College and well-respected author)... it is colourful, brief, thought-provoking, and useful as an overview, or as a companion to a study in greater depth. -- Jeremy Walker, The Banner of Truth

Peeters Publishers Johannine Perspectives on the Death of Jesus
Book SynopsisHow do the Gospel and Epistles of John depict the death of Jesus, and why do they do so in the way that they do ? The argument of this study is that there is a diversity of theological perspectives on Jesus' death in the Johannine Corpus and that at least some of that diversity can be elucidated with reference to the changing Sitze im Leben of the Johannine community. This book thus attempts to correlate Johannine theology with Johannine history, building on the earlier labors of Raymond E. Brown and J. Louis Martyn in particular. Part One assesses recent trends in Johannine scholarship and gives a fresh account of the history of Johannine Christianity and of its literary legacy. Part Two then investigates Jesus' death in the Gospel and Epistles of John, attempting to understand and to explain the diversity of Johannine theological perspectives with reference to historical developments and sociological realities. Focal point of discussion and analysis are Johannine passages which relate Jesus' death to the fulfillment of Scripture (e.g. John 12:37-39, 19:24, 36-37), to his departure or going away (e.g., 14:2-3), to his exaltation and glorification (e.g. 3:14, 8:28, 12:32-34; 13:31), and to the language of flesh, blood and water (John 6:51-56; 13:1-20; 19:34; I John I:7; 4:2; 5:6-8; 2 John 7).

Book SynopsisThe Historical Commentary on the Old Testament is an international series of commentaries which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. The commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called "Essentials and Perspectives" in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. Dr. Martin J. Mulder (1923-1994) was Professor of Semitic languages at the Free University Amsterdam (1970-1979) and Professor of Old Testament in Leyden University (1979-1989). He is the author of many studies on the text of the Old Testament and the history and religion of Ancient Israel. His very detailed commentary on 1 Kings 1-11 is the crown of his work.

Peeters Publishers The Unity of Luke - Acts
Book SynopsisThis volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various aspects of Lukan theology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology, the expansion of the Church in light of its Jewish origins, the genre of Luke-Acts, and the literary and stylistic means Luke used to make his work a unity. In total the volume includes some 40 papers, of which 24 are offered papers: L. Alexander, H. Baarlink, M. Bachmann, D. Bechard, T.L. Brodie, G.P. Carras, A. del Agua, C. Focant, G. Geiger, B.J. Koet, V. Koperski, D.P. Moessner, G. Oegema, J. Pichler, E. Plumacher, A. Puig i Tarrech, U. Schmid, B. Schwank, N. Taylor, P.J. Tomson, S. Van den Eynde, S. Walton, G. Wasserberg, F. Wilk. This collection is an invaluable contribution to current discussions in Lukan study and to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Luke's two volumes.

Peeters Publishers Isaiah II. Volume 2 / Isaiah 28-39
Book SynopsisThe Historical Commentary on the Old Testament is an international series of commentaries which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. As the term 'Old Testament' indicates, the commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The team of those who committed themselves to contribute comprises scholars from all over the world and from many different churches and denominations. The commentary is intended not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for ministers and other interested parties. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called 'Essentials and Perspectives' in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The primacy here is assigned to the final stage of the text. The summary should incite the user to consult the main body of the exegesis which is headed 'Scholary Expositon'. Here the approach is that of modern critical scholarship.

Peeters Publishers The Apocryphal Acts of Andrew
Book SynopsisThe Apocryphal Acts of Andrew' is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the Acts of Andrew, an early Christian kind of novel, which has only partially been preserved in Greek, Latin and Coptic. In addition to a thorough discussion of its date and place of origin, the collection of essays discusses many aspects of the Acts of Andrew, such as its interest in magic, martyrdom and the place of the devil, its preoccupation with scatology, and its interest in eroticism. It looks at its relationship with Poimandres, with the pagan novels and with other Christian writings, in particular the Acts of John and the Acts of Andrew and Mathias. Much attention is paid to spiritual climate of the Acts of Andrew and its connections with Platonism and gnosticism. Finally, it analyses the Armenian translation, which is shown to be an important witness to the original text.

Peeters Publishers Jeremiah in Prophetic Tradition: An Examination
Book SynopsisIn this study it is argued that the book of Jeremiah was influenced by the books of Amos and Hosea. All three books show a similar pattern of development. There is a correspondence between the reactions of those addressed and the prophetic message, which changes from the preaching of repentance to a message of irreversible judgment. Finally, these prophets testified that only God could bring about a new future. This study, which originally took the form of a dissertation, examines several topics common to Hosea, Amos and Jeremiah. Dr. Lalleman demonstrates important correspondences which point to a prophetic tradition received and developed by Jeremiah in his own way. The research concentrates on the themes of repentance and hope, covenant, and the role of the prophet in intercession, as well as his personal involvement in his message. The differences between these prophetic books, however, show that the individual characteristics of each prophet must not be neglected. The assumption of one monolithic Deuteronomistic redaction responsible for the editing of all the books is therefore unlikely. The prophets are best interpreted in their own historical contexts, although they are connected by a common spiritual heritage, a prophetic tradition.

Peeters Publishers The Sayings Gospel of Q in Greek and English with
Book SynopsisThe Sayings Gospel Q in Greek and English with Parallels from the Gospels of Mark and Thomas is the outcome of a generation's work by the International Q Project, in reconstructing the collection of sayings ascribed to Jesus (and some to John) that lies behind the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It thus makes available in a convenient form the most important source for reconstructing the message of Jesus' original Galilean followers, as they proclaimed anew after his death his message of God's reign. Q is, as a result, the most important single source for the study of the historical Jesus. It should be in the hands of every student of theology and of every layperson seriously interested in knowing more about Jesus. This small volume presents, on facing pages, the Greek and English reconstruction of the text of Q. It is in a simplified and more readable format than its original massive publication of 1990, The Critical Edition of Q: Synopsis including the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Mark and Thomas with English, German and French Translations of Q and Thomas, edited by James M. Robinson, Paul Hoffmann, and John S. Kloppenborg, Managing Editor Milton C. Moreland, at Peeters and Fortress Press.

Peeters Publishers The Language of Belonging: A Rhetorical Analysis
Book SynopsisBy employing a rigorous historio-rhetorical exegesis of each unit in chaps. 3-6 and 14, Birge explores how Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians, used the same kinship images and language in different pastoral situations to address the situation of disharmony and division among the Corinthians (1:10). She investigates the possible sources for Paul's 'ideas' about kinship images and language by examining likely influences on him from his social and historical matrix: Jewish literature and the practice of Hellenistic rhetoric. After concluding that Paul drew on these two cultural and religious resources to craft his argument for unity, she asserts that what was 'new' for him was finding the 'genetic material' of kinship 'in Christ' rather than in fidelity to God and the Torah. She also claims that what was new for Early Christianity was the notion that the state of being "in Christ" dissolved all boundaries of status and privilege that Greco-Roman society had established among people who were not 'kin'.

Peeters Publishers Rhetoric and Tradition: John Chrysostom on Noah
Book SynopsisIn addition to the classical literary corpus, Chrysostom, like many other educated Christians, relied upon the Scriptures as an equally important source. Focusing on the use which writers made of the Scriptures in order to convey their moral, social, and theological ideas, this study is unique in that it offers a detailed analysis of patristic rhetoric against the background of the scriptural corpus. A close examination of a wide range of Greek exegetical and homiletic writings, in particularly the newly-available edition of the Greek A"CatenaA", reveals that the Fathers wrote and preached in accordance with well-established literary conventions. Chrysostom, his Antiochene colleagues and his Alexandrian rivals approached the biblical text with a full appreciation of the methods formulated by their predecessors. The evidence of the exegetes' meticulous and calculated use of the biblical text contradicts the present scholarly tendency to describe the homiletic literary output as spontaneous and free-flowing. For the first time, Chrysostom is examined not in an isolated way, but in the wider context of Antiochene and Alexandrian exegesis, and their respective theological ideologies. When studying the wider aspects of the Fathers' methods of interpretation, it becomes clear that the study of ideas cannot be separated from the study of their modes of expression.

Peeters Publishers 1 Chronicles
Book SynopsisDuring the last few decades there has been a growing scholarly interest in the Book(s) of Chronicles, which resulted in a respectable number of commentaries in various languages. Yet, the book remains inviting for further study and research. The present commentary is a result of it. It attempts to understand the Book of Chronicles as an expression of the author's religious conviction and piety in the context of the late Persian period, which provided him with the reason and stimulans for writing this work as a religious appeal to his readers. His (assumed) intention is determinative of both the contents and the structure of the work, and in a number of cases contributes to a better understanding of smaller textual units. An extensive introduction deals among others with the writer's purpose and with some themes which occur throughout the book.

Peeters Publishers The Song of Songs : A Philological Analysis of
Book SynopsisSince time immemorial the Song of Songs (SofS) has been a source of amazement and inspiration. The countless translations and interpretations of this book differ strongly from each other. Does the Hebrew text indeed justify this? To answer this question, an unprejudiced philological analysis is necessary that keeps strictly to the text, which does justice to the context, and approaches the book intrinsically as rationally as possible. These methods followed by the author make clear that the SofS is a continuous story, which runs from SofS 1.2 to 8.14 with a cohesive structure, which is readily comprehensible and logical. That even applies to verses (e.g. 2.15; 6.12), which are seen by everyone as puzzling. Emendations are practically never necessary, eliminations not at all. The analysis makes plausible that SofS 1.2-8.4 is set in the harem of Solomon. The female protagonist, who has earlier lost her heart to a shepherd, is held their against her will and prepared physically and mentally for a meeting with Solomon by a personal attendant, who first appears in SofS 1.9; she does not succeed in winning her for Solomon. In the SofS a consistent use of language is employed, which means, for example, that the individual speakers are recognisable; this, together with the intrinsically cohesive structure of the work, is a strong argument for one author/editor. The use of veiled language for specific female or male parts of the body occurs more often than is recognised by others. The SofS is the story of the love, which unites two people. It is unique and faithful, and encompasses the whole of the person. Full justice is done to the related erotic-sexual aspect in a satisfying and harmonious manner.

Peeters Publishers Q: A Reconstruction and Commentary
Book SynopsisThe last fifty years have witnessed a remarkable renaissance in Q studies with scholars probing every aspect of the Q hypothesis from the existence and extent of Q to the reconstruction of the original text and the place of the document in the history of early Christianity. The time seems ripe for a major commentary on Q to consolidate and extend the discussion of this important document that Matthew and Luke incorporated into their gospels. A"Q: A Reconstruction and CommentaryA" contains an argued reconstruction of the original Greek text of Q and a commentary on the reconstructed text along with an introduction that explores all of the main questions that swirl around the Q hypothesis.

Peeters Publishers Nahum
Book SynopsisIn this commentary an attempt is made to prove that the book of Nahum was written in Jerusalem, ca. 660 BCE, by a talented, faithful royal scribe. He used the pseudonym Nahum as an indication of his purpose: to encourage the people of Judah groaning under the tyranny of the Assyrians. He took his inspiration from the earlier prophetics of Isaiah and from Psalms, which he probably regularly heard or sang in the temple. He also used his familiarity with the Assyrian literature, especialy with the texts of vassal treaties and royal annals, to express in fitting words the announcement of the downfall of the Assyrian empire symbolized by its capital Niniveh. After the fulfilment of this prediction in 612 BCE the book of Nahum must have become very popular, as it proved clear example of true prophecy. It had much influence upon Habakuk and exilic prophets like the Second Isaiah and Jeremiah, who interpreted its message in the new situation of the Babylonian opprression. Traces of this influence are also found in the literature of the community of Qumran and in the NT.

Peeters Publishers The Scriptures in the Gospels
Book SynopsisThis volume contains the papers from the 45th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense, held in Leuven in 1996. The book comprises 14 invited papers as well as 21 offered papers read at the meeting. The essays are all concerned with the use of Jewish scriptures in the gospels, focusing on the individual gospels, or on sources (e.g. Q) used by the evangelists. The essays also reflect the growing significance in literary studies of the notion of "intertextuality", emphasizing the idea that texts can only be understood in relation to a network, or matrix, of other texts. Most of the essays retain a historical-critical approach, focusing on the author of the NT texts concerned, though with full awareness of the insights to be gained from other approaches to the texts. Further, full cognizance is taken of the new light being shed on the NT gospels by the evidence emerging from the hitherto unpublished Qumran scrolls, with the newly available 4Q521 text being often discussed. The essays all show the very great importance of the Jewish scriptures, both in themselves and as interpreted by contemporary Jews, for interpreting the NT gospels and their traditions. This collection will be an invaluable resource for all those engaged in studying the gospels and their traditions, especially in seeking to locate those texts within their contexts in Second Temple Judaism.

Urim Publications Personal Midrash: Fresh Insights into the Torah
Book SynopsisA personal exploration of one Jew's journey to find meaning in the Torah, Personal Midrash is a unique collection of commentary and insights on the Torah. The search for meaning as religious and spiritual beings is anchored to a common written document: the Torah. But, if the Torah were inaccessible, or inscrutable, or beyond the grasp of the ordinary person, we would lose our way. This book is a personal journey through Torah by a curious Jew without rabbinic training. While a scholar may learn something new from this book, the hope is that any Jew may be inspired to likewise seek his or her own voice in interpreting Torah.Trade Review"A true modern midrash - not in the all-too-frequently misused sense of this term, but in a manner that genuinely recreates the intertextual and pious approach of the midrashim of yore." Benjamin D. Sommer, Professor, Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages, Jewish Theological Seminary"This book is instantly readable, teachable, and something every clergy and educator should have on hand." Rabbi Ari Averbach, Assistant Rabbi, Congregation Beth Shalom, Northbrook, Illinois"These pages open portals of thought for the reader which stimulate the imagination. Trusting in Shulman's treatment of Midrash to be respectful more so than fanciful, one can take a creative leap into the Torah's clandestine layers and journey along with him."
